Development Squad – Update Two Is Live

Continuing our programme of fixes and additions, the imaginatively named “update two” is now live with the latest array of changes.

This reflects Mat’s (aka “matzi11a’s”) work over the last couple of weeks and is mainly focused on our immediate goal to build the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS) into our tables for the coming season.

Here’s a summary of what’s included in this latest bout of changes:

Sky Sports Bonus Stats revisited
While we introduced the Sky Sports tiered bonus points in Update One, some users raised the request of seeing how these points were distributed over the two tiers.

We’ve now tweaked the display of these stats in the Sky Sports tables to show just that. You can see exactly how many bonus points each player earned in both the tiers for Saves, Tackles, Passes and Shots.

Fantasy Assists Statistic
When the Fantasy Premier League went to Opta to request a new, broader, classification for an assist – to include fouled players at free-kicks and penalties and rebounds – we stuck by the classic Opta definition in our tables.

However, with the FPL “Fantasy Assist” still used in the game and differing quite markedly from the traditional Opta stat, we’ve decided to build a query to include this statistic.

Across our tables, you will now see Fantasy Assists appear alongside the regular Assist stat with a new Total Assist calculation stat combining the two.

Big Chances Modification
It came to our attention that Opta now classify a new type of event as a Big Chance or “gilt-edged opportunity”. This is an event which does not result in a shot by a player but perhaps a complete miss or an “air shot”. Nonetheless, the opportunity is still deemed a Big Chance and therefore needs to be in our data.

This led us to create a series of new data to cover missed chances with and without a shot on goal. However, you will see new statistics – Total Big Chances, Big Chances Scored and Big Chances Missed in our tables. These are new additions to the Goal Threat tables for players.

Big Chances Created Added
With the change to Big Chances, we had to reflect this in our Big Chances Created statistic. Once revised, we also added this new stat to our Distribution tables for players as a new metric.

Recoveries Fixed and Added for Goalkeepers
Examination of our Recoveries data revealed some inconsistencies and errors and, in addition, we had not recorded Recoveries for goalkeepers – a key stat in the FPL BPS.

We’ve now fixed our Recoveries statistic and added it to the Goalkeepers’ goalkeeping table.

Caught Offside Statistic
This statistic was never surfaced on any table and, although available in the custom table listing, was returning incorrect data.

We’ve now fixed this stat and continue to make it available for custom table makers.

This data, like many others built for this update, will be included in our BPS tables to come.

Take Ons Statistic
Previously we’ve only surfaced statistics for Dribbles – when a player attempts to travel in possession with the ball.

However, the Dribbles stat is not used when calculating the BPS. Instead, FPL use the Opta “Take Ons” statistic – when a player dribbles and attempts to beat an opponent.

We also learned that Opta had a new “Overrun” event which measured a failed dribble – when a player simply overruns the ball to lose possession rather than be tackled by an opponent. We’ve now built a query and surfaced this stat behind the scenes.

In a nutshell, we’ve now added Take Ons as a subset of Dribbles and have replaced Dribbles with Take Ons in the player Involvement tables. However, both Dribbles and Take Ons are available in the Player Comparisons and, of course, when building Custom tables.

Tackled Statistic
The BPS penalises a player a single point each time they are “tackled” in a match. However, this is not, as you might expect, based on tackles lost. Instead, it’s a combination of the failed Take Ons and the Opta Dispossessed statistic.

A vital metric in the BPS table, we’ve already surfaced this in our player Involvement tables. We’ve also added a new “Retention” section to the player comparison tool and displayed both the Tackled and Dispossessed statistics.

Player Comparison Tool names filter
For several seasons the drop-down list of player names when using the Comparison Tool has shown multiple names for some players.

We’ve now addressed this to remove duplicates and also introduced the ability for us to swap in a “known name” or a more familiar name for a player – this enables us to make players like Sanchez and Firmino easier to find. You’ll see us tidy this up over the next few days now that Opta have released a first squad list for 2017/18.

What’s Next?

We continue on our quest to create tables presenting the data for the Bonus Points System – involving both positive and negative factors. We are now just a few statistics short of being able to build the tables.

Mat will work on creating Net Tackles and the Winning Goal data next.

The latter is an interesting one and may lead us to begin work on a mid-term task – to store team results in order to begin work on a proposed new tool. Hopefully, we can bring you more on that in the next update.

We remain completely open to the work we’re carrying out and the tasks to come. You can follow our progress as we add and move tasks via our roadmap here.

We also continue to welcome any comments and requests. Once the BPS tables work is complete, we will have a full appraisal of the next set of tasks and goals.

Mark, if you're still here, can we get the number of stats in the tables increased to more than 10? It seems a bit limiting most of the times.

  3. Pep's rotation redux

This is a follow-up to Kuntheman's excellent hot topic on Pep's rotation policy, which showed there were several safe starters in the first ten gameweeks of Bayern's 15/16 season, suggesting that Pep's rotating won't prevent us finding strong FPL prospects at City. However, I'm still afraid a rotation headache is on the cards for fantasy managers next season.

The problem with looking at those ten opening gameweeks is that key players Ribery (10 games out) and Robben (6 games out) were injured.

Bayern under Pep in 15/16 essentially had 10 players competing for 6 positions in midfield and attack - Alonso, Vidal, Thiago, Gotze, Ribery, Robben, Costa, Coman, Muller and Lewandowski.

City under Pep in 16/17 also look like they're aiming to have 10 players competing for those 6 positions - Fernandinho, Yaya, Gundogan, D. Silva, De Bruyne, B. Silva, Sterling, Sane, Jesus and Aguero.

Here's the overall percentage of starts which those Bayern players made in the league in 15/16, of the games where they were in the matchday squad:

    Robben - 93% (14 starts)
    Lewandowski - 88% (29 starts)
    Alonso - 79% (23 starts)
    Costa - 77% (23 starts)
    Muller - 76% (26 starts)
    Coman - 74% (20 starts)
    Vidal - 73% (24 starts)
    Thiago - 52% (16 starts)
    Gotze - 55% (11 starts)
    Ribery - 43% (6 starts)

Those numbers suggest only two solid fantasy assets over the course of a season - Robben (who was mostly injured), and Lewandowski, whose 88% start rate is equivalent to being benched 4 or 5 times in 38 games.

Here are the same figures for those City players in 16/17:

    Fernandinho - 97% (31 starts)
    Gundogan - 90% (9 starts)
    D. Silva - 89% (31 starts)
    De Bruyne - 89% (33 starts)
    B. Silva - 89% (33 starts - for Monaco)
    Yaya - 85% (22 starts)
    Sterling - 83% (29 starts)
    Aguero - 81% (25 starts)
    Jesus - 80% (8 starts)
    Sane - 65% (20 starts)

Given that Sane's percentage of starts jumped up to 94% in the last 17 games of the season, Gundogan will be returning from injury, and Yaya and Jesus will be in the squad from the start, as will Bernardo Silva, you can expect those numbers to take a serious hit next season.

If Fernandinho continues to play some games at right back, and enough City players are injured at once, great FPL options will emerge. There may well be one or two players who, like Robben and Lewandowski, will almost always start when available. However, until we start to see Pep's new hierarchy emerge over pre-season and the opening gameweeks, I think it's very difficult to describe any City attacker as being nailed on.

Useful, cheers. Certainly makes sense to wait and see, but I'd imagine most will be "gambling" on one or two of them. I think Jesus was only not a starter when in the squad due to injury return/new signing.

I'd expect this to be the highest percentage:

      Gundagon
      Jesus KDB Silva Sane
      Aguero

Guadiola liked the 4-1-4-1 last season.

Gundogan never played the holding role in the 4-1-4-1 last season, he was always further forward, with Fernandinho or Yaya deepest.

De Bruyne was actually benched in the GW10 game where Gundogan exploded with 2 goals and an assist, alongside Silva in the 4-1-4-1.

Just imagine what City will do to smaller teams at home. 75% possession and about 25 shots. The problem is minutes. I'd imagine plenty of rotation and players getting subbed early if they're winning comfortably. That's what I do in Fifa.

Great analysis Ludo. City have got to be a bit concern for FPL managers, despite the great prospects for points output. It's especially annoying as they have a cracking run of fixtures (as it stands) from 21st Dec through to Feb:
      BOU / new / cpl / WAT / liv / NEW / WAT / bur / LEI (i.e. GW17-25)
But at the moment it's tricky to see who we will want, or who we can trust to be starting, the majority of those: it might come down to injuries.

Relatedly: I've just finished looking at Bernardo Silva, who won the Twitter poll earlier for who to look at, in case you guys want some further context around the new man and a view on how he might impact us as FPL managers: http://whogottheassist.com/posts/522

(btw, will do either Dwight Gayle, Chris Lowe or Pascal Gross next - will post 2m about this)

By December injuries may be taking a toll and we may have a clearer idea of Pep's plans. But, yes, if everyone's fit it might be a rotation nightmare at that time.

I could't log into your website to leave a comment for some reason but if you want to compare Salah's numbers to a contemporary then surely Lamela is the one to compare him to since he is a very similar type player and came from the exact same club to a similar level club in the PL?

Roma 33 league games 15 goals and 5 assists

Following year at spurs 9 league games 17 games 1 goal 4 assists.

No point comparing him to Sanchez who was a superstar before he came to the PL and had done it in two major leagues. Salah will struggle to get into the Liverpool first team imo and I think he will be priced closer to 8m than the 9.5m or so you seem to suggest.

I think another important element here is that people might have overreacted to Pep's rotation a bit -- if you were comparing 2016-17 City to the other heavily firing attacks from the same year like Chelsea and Liverpool, they didn't have CL competition to worry about, and when Spurs became rampant I think they were already out of the CL as well.

Since Leicester were not a deep squad they wouldn't be a decent comparable either -- I think comparing City to recent PL teams still alive in the three major competitions in the second half of the season might be the most relevant.

Discounting Mourinho's United treble at my peril, I know...

They're all frauds. The whole lot of em. Lock em all up. Look at Iceland. They sent their bankers to prison and now they're growing into a footballing powerhouse. So if England want to win the World Cup, they need to lock up all their footballers, accountants and bankers. Bob's you're uncle

Expect the number of accusations to rise. A buddy of mine in Spain was telling me they're going after people like footballers in a big way. Seems like a few of the tax loopholes that many accounting firms have been claiming would classify as avoidance methods are being viewed by Spanish authorities as evasion methods. Seeing as most big earners in Spain have probably explored some of these methods I think we'll see plenty more facing investigation.

Sadly, this is what having no concept of money does for you.

If they only earned £80k a year, instead of a week, they'd pay their taxes without question.

Yep. Plus if on £80k a year you're more likely to do all your tax work yourself instead of hiring teams of accountants to do them. Obviously that doesn't absolve the accused of being involved, it just adds many more people to the equation which of course adds to potential difficulties and dodgy doings.

Big chances created is a great addition. A 5 yard layoff for a long shot goes down as a chance created so it will be very useful to differentiate between that and an actual big chance created when looking at assist potential.

To the Liverpool fans here, would you be happy if we only signed Salah, VVD and an 'average' left back like Robertson this window?

Nope. CB is a big issue but I could understand putting it off for a season to fix other areas and because of a lack of quality on the market (if that was the clubs plan before being approached about VVD), I think our main problem is actually the full backs, while Milner performed admirably his performances stagnated a bit as the season wore on, he was reliable defensively (bar a few performances) but offensively he didn't offer enough, never tried to beat a man and whip it in on his left and would slow things down far too much when he'd cut in on his right, Clyne is just a bad player. I think with the system Klopp wants to play and our real struggle against teams that would sit deep and stack the box we need width, and we need full backs that will both be safe defensively and will offer something going forward. Bringing in Salah is a good start but it doesn't make us better as a team to the same degree as adding quality at the full back positions would, or as you've said CB. That's just my opinion though. Naby Keita would have been cool but that isn't likely at all.

Agree with your point about the fullbacks. Milner started ok for me, but tailed off badly as the season went on. An overlapping fullback would be pretty important

Mind CB is still a position of need for us, but I could see sense if one wasn't signed for reasons.

First off, that's not an "only" situation. Both Salah and VVD would require that you break your transfer record, and the 3 transfers combined would probably take your summer spending to over £100m, which isn't to be sniffed at. Secondly, Robertson is a very good left back, an established international who is a cut above "average" IMO, you could do a lot worse than him.
I'd suggest that you need a "proper" striker too, to be honest. Sturridge is made of crackers and you can't rely on Firmino and Origi when you're both in the champions league and need to be gunning for the title.

I'm not a Liverpool fan though, so would YOU be happy?

I think Salah for anything less than £40mil is a pretty good deal given the spending of say Everton on the likes of Bolasie, Pickford etc. The fee isn't that big a deal in today's market though.
I called Robertson average but put the word average in commas as it's subject to opinion. Just my assumption that he would be deemed average by a fair few Liverpool fans.

I'm happy if Klopp gets who he wants to improve the side. I'm not really one for saying I'm happy/unhappy or name targets. Fans job is to support the manager and the players we have ... anything else is unhelpful and puts pressure on the club. Leave that to opposing fans.

It's a great start and in all honestly, we should be happy with that.
Realistically though, we need a better LB than Robertson who can come straight in and impact games, that being said, Clyne could be better.
We need a better holding MF, keita was banded about a bit.
Salah would be great for us, him and Mané could be extremely threatening and a joy for coutinho and Lallana to assist. I'd still like to see an out and out world class CF though, aubermayang sounds good to me.
At this rate we also can't rule out Ox being signed and/or playing 343

Managers can't afford good midfielders with kun and kane front . unless they leave defence weak by 4.5 options which is unlikely with defence love increasing

What do people think about Kun and Jesus. Will Pep play both or rotate them? I'm avoiding both as I don't know if either will be nailed on sufficiently. At least with Kane he has no competition.

I don't know about 4-3-3 at all, to be honest. Last season I generally found a 4th mid served me a lot better than a 3rd forward, in fact I was at 3-5-2 for the better part of my season. Unless some good low price options emerge I'm going to steer clear of a 3rd forward. You can afford good mids, a good forward line, and a good defence in a 4-4-2 I've found, looking at some price templates.

Salah has been fantastic last two seasons numbers don't lie but Italy and England are like chalk and cheese i remember seeing a genuine world class talent in Shevchenko struggle in the PL after tearing Serie A a new one for years... There are trust issues there and it's blatantly obvious Martial doesn't work hard enough for Mourinho's liking.. Jose admitted himself in a recent interview with Rio that his weakness is not being able to understand those players that don't share his mentality and that creates problems from time to time.. problems he asks his coaching staff to help him a lot with.. he was full of praise for Rashford who he says he can push and push and ask anything of and he gives him just what he wants.. rightly or wrongly he expects that from everybody.. it's evident the Martial's Smalling's Jones's etc don't give him that

Grujic starting for U21 game today. Did you see him the other day. Pretty good in the highlights. Also looked an absolute giant in that game

Good to see these changes. One request I have for next year's Members Section:

Can sortable player prices be included in the Individual Player Stats? RMT updates by price on a weekly basis, so I would assume that could be done for the Individual section as well.

Would be massively helpful to be able to sort by price instead of picking through the whole list to try to cross reference with FPL pricing.

That's something I've put on my personal wishlist too - would allow you to build 'Budget Midfielder' tables, etc. which I think would be great. No idea if it might happen though!

Agreed, the tables would be really helpful, since like in Explosion Imminent you could set parameters for players to automatically be dropped once they reach a certain price threshold.

It's obviously doable it's just I've tried to avoid building features around scraped data. I'll look at how we can build this in - task added in trello.

RB Leipzig wont be allowed to compete in the Champions league. That might improve Liverpools chances of signing Keita

Lagging Comments Section . When will it be improved? I think its been neglected a little here even though it is arguably one of the best thing of this site. So little improvement in comments section wont do any harm ( especially for Mobile users)

United is solid. It's less about football, more about the Munich Air Disaster and it's effect. Definitely worth a watch. BBC film I think

Would it possible to add a drop down box to the Rate My Team tool so that it spits out projected points for the Sky game (or others) rather than FPL?

I know that their maybe little demand for it on here however I'm assuming the data is there anyway (projected goals, assists etc.) just needs applying to a different points matrix? Defensive midfielders are more valuable in the Sky Game for example.

Here's a thing. Those very important "Recoveries" for goalkeepers?

Mignolet has the most. Now check his position on BPS in the transfers table ...

Great spot Doosra - that data on live is incorrect - Gomes has the correct top figure on our test server with over 300.

I'll report the bug to Mat and get that fixed.
