Great Expectations – Sadio Mane

After finding the net 11 times in each of his two seasons at Southampton, Sadio Mane was finally acquired by long-term suitor Jurgen Klopp last summer.

Snapped up by the Liverpool manager for around £36m, the Senegal international was quick to make an impact across the Fantasy games, netting in the season opener at Arsenal as the battle for our attentions in the Reds’ midfield intensified.

Limited to just 27 appearances due to Africa Cup of Nations duties and a season-ending knee injury, Mane only claimed thirteenth spot among FPL midfielders on 156 points, yet still finished as his side’s joint-top scorer along with Philippe Coutinho on 13 goals.

Expected to be fit for the start of the upcoming campaign, the former Saints’ cutting edge may well give him the advantage over his midfield team-mates as the Merseysiders’ likeliest source of attacking returns in 2017/18 – even in the light of the impending arrival of Mohamed Salah.

Key Factors

  • Unleashed from the right of Klopp’s three-man frontline, Mane flourished as a Fantasy option in a midfield that offered strong competition from the likes of Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. His average of 5.8 points per match was more than any team-mate and placed fifth among regular FPL midfielders. Bearing in mind that he served up 4.3 ppm and 4.6 ppm over his two years at St Mary’s, it’s clear that the move to Merseyside has benefitted Mane’s FPL appeal.
  • The Opta numbers also highlight Mane’s upturn at Anfield. An average of 172.3 minutes per goal was fifth quickest among FPL midfielders in the top-flight last term and bettered his tallies of 194.1 and 236.7 in those two seasons with the Saints. A goal conversion rate of 22.8% – second only to Bournemouth’s Josh King (23.9%) in midfield – is far superior to Coutinho (12.3%) and Firmino (11%) and indicates that, should the trio be similarly priced, a fit-again Mane has the platform outperform his team-mates. No Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2018 also helps.
  • A reliable option for our five-man midfields, Mane never went more than two league matches without finding the net in 2016/17. Compare that with Coutinho and Firmino, whose most barren streaks were seven and six matches respectively, and it’s fair to say that, among Klopp’s main attackers, the Senegal international is far less likely to test the patience of Fantasy managers.
  • Mane was particularly prolific in front of his own supporters. Despite missing five of Liverpool’s 19 Anfield fixtures, his total of nine home goals was bettered only by Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (12) among FPL midfielders. Five of Mane’s seven double-digit hauls arrived at Anfield, highlighting his armband appeal as an explosive option among Klopp’s main men.
  • Klopp’s tactical tinkering could also influence our thinking. After a goalless draw against Southampton in Gameweek 36, the German rolled out a midfield diamond behind a front two, with Coutinho pulling the strings from deep. Although Liverpool are expected to mainly continue with a 4-3-3 next time out, Mane’s speed and goal-getting ability could persuade his manager to hand him a central role up top should be switch formations in order to break down obstinate opponents.
  • The opening schedule looks encouraging for those keen to invest in the Merseysiders. Klopp’s men travel to Watford for the season opener and then face three home matches – against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Burnley – in the subsequent four Gameweeks. He scored in both appearances against the Gunners’ last term, serving up 13 points in a 3-1 win at Anfield in Gameweek 27.

To United fans, if you only signed Dier and kept De Gea, would you be happy with this transfer window?

      Nah.

I'll say it quietly, I thought Dier had a very good season at CDM for Spurs the season before last, thought it was a bit rough he got the boot for Wanyama. With that said, the English premium considered as well, can't say I'd be thrilled at the money spent on him.

Way I see it, my key areas are a new CB, a CDM/3rd CM for the middle 3 and a striker. If instead we went with Martial as a striker (which he really is) then a new LW is needed.

Since we have a CB and if we got Dier I'd be relatively okay with him as CDM (again, wouldn't be pleased about price but at least I already know he can play CDM in the PL and do a good job). So I couldn't say I was furious. But really, what I want is for United to shed a number of players and bring in a few more, the squad in general is a bit shapeless with players from the Fergie era, Moyes' time and LVG's time as well as Mou. I'd like if we could get shape on it so it aligns to what Mourinho wants.

If Dier isn't good enough to play CDM for Spurs, he certainly shouldn't be good enough to play there for Man United. (Sorry Spurs fans)

But that's kind of my point, I thought replacing him was really harsh after the season he had. I understood, Wanyama was going cheap enough but I definitely felt it was a bit rough on him. Not saying he's a world beater by any means, but I really had thought he was on to develop further at Spurs as their CDM.

Just for the sake of comparison

          https://goo.gl/qUByfk

What I will say, though, is for me Herrera can be that CDM and United could go after a different CM, but that isn't going to happen.

I like Dier nothing flashy about him no step overs or beating men but what he does bring that is very important is positional discipline.. he sits and protects and while he wouldn't have the passing range of say Carrick he is a lot more mobile and loves a tackle..What everyone else fails to mention is he is just 23 years old.. basically we need more options and less game time for Fellaini lol.. i can definitely see why Mourinho would be interested in Dier i'll trust his judgement and see what happens.. Matuidi would be my first pick though seeing as Fabinho looks unlikely

I agree. He isn't my first choice either and I'd never pretend otherwise but give me Herrera - Dier - Pogba over Fellaini - Herrera - Pogba any day. Plus as you say, he's young, which is why I was surprised Spurs bought Wanyama to replace him. I thought they were shaping him into their future CDM, it definitely stood to me as a bit of a slap in his face.

I'd very much so have liked someone like Matuidi. Fabinho has had a similar kind of trajectory in his career as Dier, started out as a right back I think and has really made it as a CDM instead. But I agree that looks unlikely, which is our loss but I wouldn't necessarily like to see Monaco absolutely gutted of all their players either. Though, Monaco did sign Meite a few days ago, a DM from the Belgian leagues.

Much improved and more consistency from both would be my guess.. But for the woodwork and some piss poor finishing from others last year Pogba would have been in double figures for goals and assists and if given that little bit more freedom he's more than capable of returning those kind of numbers imo.. Mkhi looks as things stand to be the first choice on the right side of the attack and like Pogba would expect improvement.. 11 goals in all competitions was a very decent return given he was frozen out of the side for the first few months and was in and out when he got a run at times.. both players are absolutely quality

I'm in a draft league and looking to get 3 of the following 5....
                    Morata(?), Valencia, Bailly, Pogba, Mkhi.
Probably that is the order of importance too?

If they don't, which is a massive if, then yeah always worth monitoring. But I'd be very surprised if they didn't go for one. They really only have Martial and Rashford available as strikers, if they want to be performing in the league and all the cups as well as Europe they'll need someone else.

I guess my real question should have been, is it worth monitoring him regardless of signings. Even with 3, martial seems better than Rashford but msybe not actually 2nd choice.
Mourinho completely forgotten he's a striker?

Personally I rate Martial quite highly, so I would always be monitoring him. He played striker in a few games toward the end of the season and did well enough. The issue is José has problems with him and how he plays. We saw this with a few other players and you can definitely work your way back into Jose's plans, but that really is going to come down to Martial's determination.

Defenders: Valencia, Bailly and I would wager Lindelof all nailed.
Mids + Forwards: Pogba and Herrera. I'd be expecting Pogba to have a bit more luck with his returns this season, created a lot of chances. Especially if a 3rd mid comes in who will let him wander a bit more. Mkhitaryan is still a maybe for me, Mou has been very happy to drop him. Whoever they sign in attack, be it a winger or a striker, for example Morata, will be a player Mourinho has specifically targeted so I would think will be fairly secure.

I think I need both valencia and alder(except rose get extended injury and pick davies) for next season. But it seems two premium defenders priced at 6 is too much.

If we assume FPL react to the "wingback > all other defenders" issue by pricing them 0.5m to 1m more, then an under the radar pick might be Glen Johnson.

    http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=32697

Plenty of ifs and buts regarding his fitness, but he shouldn't be more than 4.5m, and Hughes trialled the wingback system at the end of last season. Both Johnson and Pieters on the other flank are on the wrong side of 30 so I'm not confident on how often Hughes opts for 3/5 at the back. Worth keeping an eye on though with Butland back between the sticks.

So Welbeck would be the only striker left? Also doesn't make sense for any good player playing in a good team already to join, if Sanchez is leaving and there aren't three other improvements coming to make up for that.

FB rotation would be a major issue for FPL teams, what's more interesting is a fan is content with his club just signing FB's. He must be confident that the rest of the existing City squad are up to the task of landing the PL, which should be good for FPL players given that Pep's squad wasn't rotated regularly last season.

Agreed. he is buying the title and i think he must win CL with that squad as well. Especially if he gets Aubamayang too.

One massive thing in all this Pep rotation thing is it's not just about players sitting on the bench a couple of times a season. A lot of Pep's rotation is a change of system to account for injuries, fitness and opposition and in that change of system a players role will change. That's the killer blow as minutes playing in a different and less effective role are not the same value as natural role minutes.

Jesus as an out-and-out striker = FFS wankfest
Jesus out wide or 'off' Aguero = FFS firesale
de Bruyne alongside Silva in midfield = FFS lol what a waste of money-fest
de Bruyne as a #10 in behind a striker = Bemba Da OMGfest.

Players that play many different roles are immune to such 'rotation' but their versatility takes a hit when moving positions, like Jesus above, KdB playing as a #8, Sané playing on both sides.

What i'm saying is it's great to won these 'rotation-free' players but it's equally not great at the same time. Be cautious and avoid City players unless you're happy with the odd disappointment.

There are sure to be players worth breaking your template for, and the MITN to do it as i'm not convinced there will be a 13m player in the game next season. Kane's the most likely, I can't see Kun being that high after under preforming by his standard last season.

Plenty of third forwards with decent fixtures to start with:

Benteke, Gabbiadini, Rondon, Promoted striker, Llorente, Deeney, King/Defoe/Wilson, West Ham striker

What price would FPL Towers have to value Kane at for him to no longer be essential to you?

Or more pertinently, how much cheaper do Alli and Eriksen need to be to ignore Kane altogether?

For me, if I can get Alli or Eriksen for 4m less than than Kane, then I'd *consider* going without.

(Assume double up isn't an option.)

Anything above 13m and I am going without him otherwise he is probably a shoo-in atm . I know 13m is not that low too but he has been Aguero-esque now so wont mind paying him that much for him. Captain and all that.

I think Alli and Eriksen wont be 4m less than him . Double up sounds too much money I know but I Think it wont be that bad of a idea really.

Now just for them to start learn how to play at wembley only thing I am.worried about.

He's definitely at the Aguero level in terms of FPL output so I can't see anything less than 13m. We'll have to see how much that compromises the rest of the squad!

But that's just it. There's a tipping point where teams without Kane will do better because of compromises elsewhere.

Although Kane × 2 wont be far behind though and if he scores a hatty like he loves to do those captain points will just crush the non-owners imo. He is too good not to own imo. Main thing is you can rely on him as your captain

I think an important question to ask regarding Kane(13m) is will you captain him in the opening fixtures - Newcastle (A) & Chelsea(H).

Other teams have more attractive looking opening fixtures on paper to me like Chelsea(Lukaku?) at home to Burnley , Utd(Morata) home to West ham, Sanchez at home to Leicester, Mane/Coutinho away at Watford and Aguero/Jesus away at Brighton.

Also would you captain him against Chelsea in GW2?

If your not going to captain him in first few fixtures I don't think he is worth 13m.

Perhaps getting Kane in with your early wildcard (GW4/5) is a better strategy?

    3. Stats Don\'t Lie

If kane is above 13m or alli/eriksen are below 10 I will consider going without. However I may settle for son as my spurs mid if he is 8.0/8.5m

Above 13m is a no no. Even at 13m, depending on other factors he's not a complete shoo-in.

I can't see alli/eriksen being 4m less. I can see Kane being 13m and alli being 10 and maybe eriksen 9.5 if we're lucky.

      1. Twisted Saltergater

Yep, I think you've nailed the prices there. Kane at 13m and Eriksen at 9.5m would tip me towards having Eriksen only.
