The Numbers Game – Burnley

Our series of pre-season team analysis articles continues with a look at Burnley.

First off, we check out the Clarets’ team numbers before casting on eye over their main goal threats and sources of creativity.

We’ll then take a closer look at the contrast between their home and away performances, bearing in mind that Burnley mustered just a single win and seven points on their travels in over 2016/17.

Relegated from the top-flight in 2014/15 after finishing second-bottom with 28 goals and 33 points, the Clarets bounced back at the first time of asking.

Returning as winners of the Championship, Sean Dyche’s side went on to secure their survival thanks mainly to a series of strong home performances – 33 of the Clarets’ 40 points and 26 of their 39 goals arrived at Turf Moor.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Found This From Roberto Firmino's Wikipedia

Born in Maceió , Alagoas , Firmino joined Figueirense 's youth setup in 2008, aged 17, after starting out at CRB . "He was discovered by a dentist, Marcellus Portella. "

And we were wondering how his teeths were that white.

Heaton, Keane, Mee, Barnes, Vokes, Gray are all good shouts to have from gw1. I'm going for Heaton at 5.0 and a 4.5 keeper myself. If Heaton is 5.5 then I will opt for Keane

Awful away record last season and absolutely dreadful away fixtures to start this season. A 4.5 rotation defender could work but other than that I wouldn't touch them.

Not much redeeming from the Clarets. Obviously Heaton will get a look but I don't see much else...possible Keane (5.0?) at home or Mee (4.5?) as a budget buy.

Salah is exactly what Liverpool needed, i mean, when you don't have a single good centre back and you can't sign any it's just better to play with two defenders and eight advanced midfielders.

If he was the only signing, you could definitely say that. But it's June 21st, of course a defender will sign.

And Salah is a pretty much needed signing. We only have 1 winger. But aye, CB is priority. Just a bit of patience and the big man's deal should be resurrected.

  8. Is a third striker worth it?

Is investing in the third striker berth wise?

Lord forgive me, for I have sinned in creating this monster. For those of you who can't be asked, there is a TL;DR at the bottom. 🙂
For this little piece I will be analysing budget and mid-range attackers separately, comparing them with budget defenders/mids and mid-range defenders/mids, to see whether a 3rd attacker is better to invest in than a 5th mid or 4th def. The prices are not their original pricing which they started off with but the pricing which they finished the season on, which may see us miss out on options that exploded out of their price range, but I believe this is more fair as it cuts out any anomalies each group might have had.

    Subjective price range:

    Budget Defender: 4.9 - 3.8
    Budget Midfielder: 6.2 - 4.1
    Budget Forward: 6.7 - 4.3

    I’ll start with Budget players.
In terms of average points taken from the top ten scoring players in each price section (as seen below, rounded to 1 sig. fig.), we quickly see that forwards were emphatically not the way to go last term, with the worst points per million and the highest cost to buy out of the three options. Midfielders have the best ppm and raked in the most overall points, but cost only marginally less than the third forward option. Thus, they seem to me to be the best option for those who have some cash to splash on their 5th mid position, but for those with money in mind, a 4th budget defender is by far the best route to go as for 0.8 mil less you can avail yourself of a 22 ppm player (2 less than the highest, 24 for mids). Overall, the choice last season appeared to be spend more for a 5th budget mid and their points surplus (compared to the other two), or go all out budget and opt for a cheap 4th defender to free up other funds. Going with a cheap 3rd forward was not the most efficient route.

    Budget Defender average points: 106
    Budget Midfielder average points: 132
    Budget Forward average points: 110

    Budget Defender average ppm: 22
    Budget Midfielder average ppm: 24
    Budget Forward average ppm: 19

Budget Defender average price (top ten scoring players): 4.8
Budget Midfielder average price (top ten scoring players): 5.6
Budget Forward average price (top ten scoring players): 5.7

    Subjective price range:

    Mid range Defender: 5.4 – 5.0
    Mid range Midfielder: 8.2 - 6.3
    Mid range Forward: 8.7 - 6.8

Let’s move on to the mid range.
*Before we begin, there were not enough Mid-range forwards to actually get ten of them which had scored more than a handful, so I opted for five instead, even though this makes the average less accurate.
Looking at the stats below, it is clear that mids are the options to look for in the mid-range. Whilst defenders have the same ppm as mids, they trail by over 40 points, and embarrassingly for the mid-range attacking options, they are 30+ behind mids as well.
There are multiple reasons for this, I believe, but perhaps the most pertinent one is simply the one I previously disclaimed; there were too few forward options in this bracket for it to truly be viable for continual usage last term. The forwards I had to use for the average were Defoe, Benteke, Giroud, Slimani, and Rooney, of all people. This must showcase the dire state of the mid-range attacker; for me to include someone who played more than 80 minutes of gametime all of 12 times all season as the fifth highest scorer of this group is pretty bad.
It also meant that filling the third striker berth with a mid range striker was a hazard when one player stopped performing, a la Defoe in the final third – who could people use to replace him as a viable option? Only a much more expensive option like Lukaku or Costa who was more reliable, or a cheap budget option; both of which would have required a re-structure of the team and several precious transfers.
Even though there was a small sample size to choose an average from (or perhaps because of), there is no excuse for forwards costing 7.9 on average getting a mere 7 points more than a mighty 5.2 defender; much better that this money were invested elsewhere in the team.

Mid range Defender average points: 108
Mid range Midfielder average points: 149
*Mid range Forward average points: 115

Mid range Defender average ppm: 21
Mid range Midfielder average ppm: 21
*Mid range Forward average ppm: 15

Mid range Defender average price (top ten scoring players): 5.2
Mid range Midfielder average price (top ten scoring players): 7.0
Mid range Forward average price (top five scoring players): 7.9

Of course, this isn’t to say that a third striker is simply not an option. Even if investing money in a mid-range defender is seemingly a better idea than signing a mid-range striker (there are myriad other factors to consider, not just these most basic ones), many of us put the position to great use last season, and sometimes it was a great source of points – for example Benteke’s haul during his DGW – but to be honest, wasn’t that very third striker berth the one which was the source of the most consternation on the site? Think Gabbiadini, Negredo, Rondon, Origi, think Rashford and Wilson and Austin. I’m quite happy that for the large part I avoided most of those problems with a general 3-5-2 for most of the time.
Whether we can extrapolate this into next season or not, I can’t say yet for sure. I imagine that FPL could do something to fix up the mid-range striker problem, or that we’ll get lucky with any transfers that occur during the summer transfer window and find the spot teeming with options and no longer stagnant, but I find most likely that we’ll find ourselves in a similar situation next year. I, for one, will be spending my third striker money on my midfield and defence again, barring a significant change to the status quo.

    TL;DR
I'm going to invest in my midfield and defence before I touch my third striker slot. You can do what you want 😛

I did this with my WC early on last season (Kun/Ibra in 442) and it didn't work out, should have gone for 352 with Pool mids in hindsight. Despite that experience I also agree and will be getting 2 big strikers from the start and playing either 352 or 442 depending how attacking wing backs are classified and priced.

I'm currently researching into the importance of "big-hitters" and the optimal spread of value and funds across a team for an epic article.

The problem with giving exact figures like this is that every season is vastly different. We may have a storming 5.0m striker one season and a terrific 7-8m the next with no good budget options.

But if you decide who you expect to be good value next season (member's area is great at assisting this), you can then determine a more optimal spread and help you decide how many of the "poor-value, but high-scoring" 11.0m+ players are worth it.

Bookmarked this for article referencing 😉

Agree about the exact figures. A post like this is going to be of limited help next season due to its constrained nature; it's only 100% accurate so far as last season is concerned. Still, I feel like it does raise the importance of looking into 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 as more viable options - last season the only way I would have gone 3 at the front for an extended period of time was if my TV would have permitted a frontline of 3 Heavy Hitters, and I think a lot of people just stuck with the 3rd striker out of habit, which annoyed me I guess.
Look forward to your article, sounds very interesting 🙂

Not too great lol, first season and I only started looking into how to play properly roughly two thirds through. Until then was pretty much a dead team, let my mates decide my transfers. When I mention what I did "last season", the last bit is the part I really referred to. I climbed 1 mil OR in the last 8 weeks to 600K, so not exactly a good finish at all, but I felt I did alright considered the circumstances

Here's the budget options by year, I looked up the goals but the prices were all speculatively between the 7m & 5m mark.

      11-12: Yakubu(17), Ba(16), Holt(14), P.Cissé(13)

      12-13: Benteke(19), Lukaku(17), Berbatov(15), Lambert(15)

      13-14: Bony(17), Rodriguez(15)

      14-15: Kane(21), Austin(18), Berahino(14), Pellé(12)

      15-16: Vardy(24), Defoe(15), Ighalo(15), Deeney(13)

      16-17: Llorente(15).

I'm sat here in just my sweat drenched boxers screaming recency bias at my computer screen because I'm so angry at this post. We had one year without an elite cheap option and 3-5-2 is the best thing since hardcore stuff on the web. FFS FFS.

The heat is getting to you 😀

But nah seriously a really good point - a lot depends on getting on top of that 3rd striker early. Personally, I've had very little "luck" with 3rd strikers as I say below. Did Rondon for WBA's strong run of fixtures midseason and got more than 5 blanks from him... got Llorente in and he got injured before HT, which is colouring my opinion in terms of pushing me toward 3-5-2.

Any tips for the 3rd striker this year then, Parm? 😀

If Pellegrino goes there, he's an advocate of 4-2-3-1 it seems judging by Alaves' team set ups last year on WhoScored.

Might be him v. Gabbi for that spot if he imports that tactic.

Well that could make sense, Roma apparently approached Stoke about Shaqiri to replace Salah:
                    http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/transfer-gossip-roma-approach-stoke-with-xherdan-shaqiri-inquiry/story-30402009-detail/story.html

Could set off a real chain of transfers - JRod was decent before injury curtailed his potential, 15 goals and 3 assists in a 152 point haul in 2013/14. One to watch, especially if he goes to "support striker" and is oop

Been waiting for him to be a regular ever since that season. Potentially huge value to be had!

But taking gambles on injury-prone players before they're fully recovered and have a string of games under their belt is a disaster waiting to happen. Been there too many times 😀

What a post, I'm in full agreement. Had an awful season with cheap strikers last year (last one to score for me was Gray in GAMEWEEK TWO!) so I'm going full 3-5-2. Liking this skeleton at the moment:

      4.5, 4.0
      6.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
      12.0, 11.5, 7.5, 6.0, 4.5
      13.0, 7.5, 4.5

Lots of variables though around what I end up with come GW1. The big worry will be chickening out and getting influenced by the majority of 3-4-3 teams there will undoubtedly be... hopefully we've seen people thinking more about 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2, so it might be the case that midfield assumes prominence next year. But the moment it looks like another formation is in the ascendancy we have to be ruthless and switch it up, as the meta changes year on year.

I copied and pasted the wrong one lol

          I meant
          4.5, 4.0
          6.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
          12.0, 11.0, 7.5, 6.0, 5.0
          13.0, 7.5, 4.5

The 7.5 is a Defoe character.

All conjecture til we see the prices though 😀

And also a lot depends on the 5.0 mid; the 12.0, 11.0 and 5.0 could be in whatever configuration too 😀

Very true. I was thinking if I went 4-4-2 something like

              4.5 4.5
              6.0 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0
              10.0 9.5 8.0 5.5 4.5
              13.0 11.0 4.5

Only problem is there seem to be less cs at the start of the season, so 3-5-2 might be my way anyway

      Great analysis.

I spent last season either failing to find value in the third forward or having a top heavy forward line which affected the reminder of my team.

It was hard abandoning the third striker for me as well.
I think what really drove me to doing it was my gormless mini league rivals who had front lines of the likes of (I kid you not, at one point this was in my friend's team) Origi, Gray, Llorente. I looked at that and thought that surely I could do better 😀

With only a sample size of 5 matches last season, 4-4-2 was still more successful than 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, while being more prevalent. Not sure that means much, but with player prices at a premium, I might be inclined to start with 4 at the back. Not sure I want to struggle to find that third budget striker, week in, week out. Not to say we haven't see some value in years past, but based on data last year, a player like Llorente doesn't excite me in the #3 spot.

That was part of the reason why I moved to 3-5-2 as well. There wasn't anyone that really stood out like they deserved that slot and my precious budget

There's a considerably smaller pool of forwards than midfielders and defenders, which will skew the statistics depending on the season.

      - Bench fodder like Diomande, Anichebe, Crouch, Barnes and Afobe were nailed on for periods of the season because of injuries. A 5.0 option or less might not emerge this season.

      - Liverpool, Arsenal, Bournemouth and West Ham played without a forward for large parts of the season due to tactical decisions or injuries.

      - Austin and Gabbiadini were injured for large parts of the season. Llorente was rotated with Baston for the beginning of the season. Gray had his unnecessary suspension.

I don't expect all of these things to suddenly get fixed. But what if Firmino and King end up listed as forwards next year. Lukaku end up at the same team as Costa. Jesus and Agüero are fit at the same time and forces rotations. Man Utd might not sign a clear starter like Ibra. Kane could end up being the only premium striker without the threat of rotations.

Good read! I'll definitely try with 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 formation at some point of the season, maybe even right from the start. The thing is that some 3rd strikers were brilliant (Llorente, Benteke, Origi) and some were awful (Gabbiadini, Negredo, Wilson, Deeney, Austin). So basically 5 out of 8 failed, turned out to be picks for my team and short term punts served me much better. Never owned 4.5 striker, not even for a day. Can't wait till FPL opens and the real planning begins 😀

I like the idea of starting with a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 but Benteke as 3rd striker looks too good to me for the first few weeks. Two plum home fixtures against Huddersfield and Swansea, and a trip to Anfield. He always scores against Liverpool.

This has been an interesting discussion. I'm undecided, but I'm veering this way:

Against 2 big-hitters and a cheapie. Why? Unless you're lucky, the cheapie won't play, or the rare times he comes off the bench and scores, you've left him on your bench. At the same time, the 2 big-hitters, being from the Big 5 will be subject to rotation around Champ League weeks.

Thus, I'm leaning towards one big-hitter (Kane, probably) and 2 mid-pricers who will start regularly - Llorente, Benteke, whoever's nailed on at West Ham, Everton, Bournemouth, Southampton etc (will need to observe pre-season and 1st 2-3 gameweeks to see who's established).

3-4-3 has been the best formation most seasons, but 3-5-2 sometimes beats it.

Last season the best formation was either 3-5-2 with a very cheap 3rd forward or 3-4-3 with three premium forwards chosen from Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Ibrahimovic, Costa, Aguero and Defoe (but Defoe was useless after GW24, and Jesus was only fit for GW23-24 and GW35-38).

It helps to keep an open mind - every season is different, and perhaps 2017/18 might be the first time that 4-4-2 comes out on top! 😉

Ownership needs to be considered though. 5th mid ownership is very watered down and missing a haul is less of an impact than missing a haul from a decent 3rd striker - Having Kane & Ibra but not having Costa/Lukaku etc can kill you.

The Spanish government are really clamping down on tax avoidance in football!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40360090 Di Maria is the latest now!

We can either do the same and raise millions for the NHS, or don't and attract all the top talent to the UK, escaping from Spain.

But if every country were as ruthless, there would be no where for the rich to hide. We can dream...

Sounds like a nightmare to me.

So you are proposing a increase in the higher rate of tax from the productive people in society to pay for inefficient government run services.

I can tell you one thing it is not just football talent that will pack their bags and up sticks.

      1. Piggs Boson

The rate of tax is already 50% for the rich. It's high enough imo. I mean clamping down on avoiding tax through loop holes and schemes.

Believe me I'm all for lower cooperation tax etc to create jobs. And as you say clamping down on avoidance can result in many important companies/people leaving the UK, but if EVERY country insisted they pay their fair share, they wouldn't leave. Pure fantasy of course, sadly.

I am sure the vast majority of people that enter these schemes that were set up by a said government do so in good faith and with no criminal intent.

What irks me about this kinda of thing is a government moving the goal posts in a money grabbing exercise.
It is not just fabulously wealthy footballers that enter in to tax loopholes/incentives lots of people have tied up their hard earned savings and pensions in such vehicles.

But there are hard working care workers struggling to make ends meet because of such loopholes though, and many other low-wage hard work professions.

Oribe Peralta would be a shrewd signing for a mid-table/relegation PL team. Clinical.

I reay like how J.Damm is playing. Always beats his man on the right and crosses beautifully just before it looks like the ball go out.

On the other side Aquino has reay owned the NZ left flank

Damm looks good, decision making needs to improve. Blinding speed.

Great player to watch. Remember i thought it was a bit strange he didn't end up in Europe after London olympics.

I know prices arent out yet but who is your go to Liverpool Midfielder? Just read the recent article and it seems Mane is the go to player but when Coutinho is on it, hes explosive!

Probably going to go without one to start and see who emerges as the best option.

      Depends on prices and signings.

Countinho is so inconsistent and tends to favour the speculative long shot, which I'm not keen on.

Mane is the selfish one that loves to get in the pen area with great positioned shots. He is for sure my fav when fit, with the highest ppg. But avoiding the injury prone is something I'm trying to do, so there's some risk v reward to consider here.

Firmino may be the safe vanilla option due to a combination of gametime and where he plays on the pitch.

Salah will be interesting, but Mane is winning it for me if all are equally priced.

Mané for me I really like Roberto Firmino, but FPL wise he always seems to let me down.

That was embarrassing. I think about 5 players should've stayed on the pitch after this brawl. Punches were being thrown and in the end he only pulled out 3 yellows. I thought the video refs would've singled out every player to get sent off.

How accurate do you think my prices predictions are?

    De Gea 5.5m
    Bench Fodder 4m

    Kolasinac 6m
    Cedric 5m
    Dawson 5m
    A Smith 4.5m
    Ben Mee 4m

    Ozil 9m
    Pedro 8m
    Zaha 6.5m
    Ritchie 6m
    Redmond 6m

    Aguero 12m
    Morata/Lacazette 10.5m
    Benteke 7.5m

100m in Total by my price predictions

Sounds about right. Kun, Mee and Smith might be a bit more.

Correct for the most part. I'd say Mee will be 4.5, Kun will be 12.5 and Smith could be 5.0. Kolasinac might sneak in at 5.5, though I wouldn't exactly rule out 6.0.

      Very good imo.

Similar sort of structure I have pencilled too (who can blame us for doing this 😀 )

      4.5 - 4.0..................................8.5
      6.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0.........24
      9.5 - 9.0 - 7.5 - 6.0 - 4.5.........36.5
      13.0 - 10.5 - 7.5......................31

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

Was toying with this myself, if i do end up going 4-4-2

        4.5 4.5 = 9.0
        5.5 5.5 5.5 4.5 4.0 = 25.0
        10.0 9.5 8.0 5.5 4.5 = 37.5
        13.0 11.0 4.5 = 28.5

Although more likely is something like

        4.5 4.5 = 9.0
        5.5 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 = 24.5
        10.0 8.0 7.5 5.5 4.5 = 35.5
        13.0 10.0 8.0 = 31.0

        4.5 4.0 = 8.5
        5.5 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 = 24.5
        10.0 9.0 8.0 7.0 5.5 = 39.5
        13.0 10.0 4.5 = 27.5

Thinking I'll go for something like this:

      4.5 - 4.0
      5.5 - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.0
      10.5 - 8.0 - 8.0 - 5.5 - 4.5
      13.0 - 10.5 - 7.5

United, Soton, Dawson at the back, KDB as the premium mid, Benteke 3rd striker.

Monaco doing some great business in this transfer window. Tielemans, Meite, Gaspar, Benaglio and lastly today Mboula from Barcelona for 30 mil altogether.
