Scout Report – Mathew Ryan

Newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion completed their third summer signing last week with the purchase of Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan for a club-record transfer fee.

The 25-year-old joins from Spanish club Valencia and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Seagulls.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Chris Hughton revealed his joy at being able to attract the experienced Ryan to the club:

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to attract Mathew to the club, and he will certainly be an excellent addition to the squad in time for our first season in the Premier League. For somebody of Mathew’s age, he has very good experience, having played in the top divisions in Australia, Belgium and Spain. He has also competed in European competition and made a number of appearances at international level.”

The History

In 2009, at the age of 17, Ryan linked up with Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners, initially playing with the youth team before making his senior debut in August 2010.

He kept a record 12 clean sheets in 27 league appearances in the 2010/11 campaign and remained a regular starter until moving to Belgian side Club Brugge in May 2013.

Ryan made his league debut in a 2-0 win over RSC Charleroi and finished the 2013/14 campaign with 11 shut-outs from 30 matches.

He enjoyed another strong season in 2014/15, keeping nine clean sheets from 27 appearances, and also started all 14 UEFA Europa League matches as the Belgian side progressed to the quarter-final stage.

His impressive performances had attracted interest from clubs such as Liverpool, but it was Valencia who secured his services in July 2015, handing the Australian a six-year contract.

Ryan made his La Liga bow in a goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano in August 2015, but an injury saw him lose his place in the side, limiting the Australian to just eight league appearances.

Injuries again halted Ryan’s progress at the start of last season, which led to the goalkeeper being sent out on loan to Belgian outfit Racing Genk for the second half of the campaign.

He made 24 appearances in all competitions, including six matches in the Europa League, keeping 11 clean sheets.

Ryan made 10 appearances for Australia U20s and U23s before making his senior debut against North Korea in December 2012.

He has clocked up 31 appearances for the national team, playing in both the 2014 World Cup and the successful AFC Asian Cup campaign the following year.

The Prospects

After David Stockdale, who started 45 of Brighton’s 46 league matches last season, turned down a new contract offer and signed for Birmingham City, the Seagulls have moved quickly to bring in a replacement.

Ryan arrives at the Amex Stadium with plenty of experience in Europe and on the international stage, with his style of play looking well-suited to that of the south coast club.

Speaking in 2015, Ryan, who was twice named Belgian Pro League Goalkeeper of the Year while at Club Brugge, revealed how he liked to model his game on Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer:

“We are a similar style, we’re comfortable with the ball at our feet. We play a high sweeping role there at the back to help out the defence.”

Indeed, it’s a point Ryan made when signing for the Championship runners-up, while also stressing the need for any top goalkeeper to be a strong shot-stopper:

“I like to think that’s one of my strengths; I’m pretty comfortable with the ball at my feet and can hopefully use that aspect of my game to help the team. Hopefully, we can play some good football from the back and play through the lines. Aside from that, as a goalkeeper, it’s important to be a good shot-stopper as well.”

Comparing Ryan and Stockdale from last season, the Australian averaged a save every 25.7 minutes across six matches for Genk in the Europa League, significantly better than the Englishmen (36.2).

The Belgian side were the underdogs in many of those matches – a position Brighton are likely to find themselves in for many of their fixtures in the Premier League.

Burnley’s Tom Heaton has been the major success story among goalkeepers coming up from the Championship in recent years, but Ryan may not boast as much save point potential as the England international. Heaton averaged a save every 22.3 minutes during their promotion campaign, and 22.1 last term.

What is encouraging regarding Ryan’s clean sheet prospects is the fact that Brighton boasted the best home defensive record in 2016/17, conceding just 14 goals in 23 matches and keeping 12 clean sheets.

The Seagulls begin the campaign with a daunting home encounter against Manchester City, but with West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United and Stoke City among those visiting the Amex before Gameweek 12, Ryan looks set to be a viable option for our Gameweek 1 squads.

Expected to be the starter in goal for Hughton’s side, Ryan is likely to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With many Fantasy managers tending to prefer going with two starting 4.5-priced options at the start of the season, Ryan looks a strong candidate for a rotation pairing.

With that in mind, he will alternate perfectly home and away with the eventual first choice option – whoever that may be – at Huddersfield Town. He is also a very effective rotation partner for Southampton’s Frazer Forster who is set to be a popular early target given the Saints’ hugely favourable early schedule.

Both Heaton and Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic provided excellent value for FPL bosses last season. Ryan could be poised to follow suit, particularly if Brighton show signs that they, like Heaton and Turf Moor, can turn the Amex Stadium into a fortress.

Fantasy Footbal Scout daily hot topic

What are your top cheap defensive/goalkeeper pairings for the first few games of the season.

As the article says Ryan rotates well with Southampton's Frazer Forster - who also enjoys favourable early fixtures. Brighton and Huddersfield also rotate well.

Anyone keen on a SOU/BTN or BTN/HUDD double up?

If not what are your preferred match ups?

SWA/WBA is the big one is it not? Southampton and Huddersfield have good prospects individually, but not keen on the double ups

Foster / Forster + 4.0. No need for a rotation option with their fixtures

Forster's first 13 fixtures are so strong that I might just pair him up with the most likely 4.0 GK to get game time. 8 home games in 13 games. Only Man Utd, Liverpool and Everton from the top teams. Coincidentally Heaton has a turn of fixtures at GW12, when Forster plays Liverpool, Everton and City in a row. At that point Heaton will be done with the away games to Everton, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and City. GW12 is also right after an international break. Potential part of a WC?

A point to bear in mind is that Saints have good attacking defenders. Maybe Forster isn't the best route, even if you're doubling up

Considering a Southampton or a WBA double up, both have superb fixtures to start. Not really considering any of the promoted sides in defense other than a potential 4.0 bench fodder player. Went for a maverick start to last season and it didn't really pay off, trying to play it a bit safer this season!

I'm not sure on WBA. Awful end of season form, albeit they were on the beach from about February, ageing squad, and I don't see them having great success in the market between now and August. Also, they were hardly reliable for CS last year. I'm planning to avoid.

Agreed. I'll probably get Dawson for his goal threat and the hope of the occasional CS but I don't see too many for them even with the favourable run of fixtures.

They were awful at the end of the season, but Pulis sides always are once 40 points has been reached. The start of the next season is always a different story! They weren't reliable for clean sheets, but their set piece threat is always high and that brings the like of Brunt, Evans, McAuley and Dawson into play, as you want defenders who offer multiple ways to score points. McAuley will be priced higher, so I'm looking at Dawson and Brunt (if classed as df).

Have to wait for the player prices, but Forster and a cheapie look decent at the moment. How will the new Southampton manager affect their defensive stats though? I'll need to take that in to consideration.
I think I'll avoid Foster this season and go with a WBA defender instead.

Thinking about going 3x West Brom (2 GK, 1 DF), 2x Southampton (2 DF) and 2x Swansea (2 DF).

But this will likely go out of the window the week before the game kicks off.

I think it's all to do with saving cost at that level.

I ideally like to have 4.5/4.0 for my keeper set up to have the £££ invested further up the pitch. This means the 4.0 has to be the backup of the 4.5 so I'm always covered; with Ryan it'll depend if he's 5.0 or 4.5. If 4.5 (which is hopefully what he'll get) he's definitely a good option. Such a low point ceiling for keepers that I always advocate a fire and forget strategy and hope you get the Heatonesque / Butlandesque gem at 4.5 from the outset.

Defence wise, I'm happier with the rotations of the more established EPL teams: Burnley/WBA has really caught my eye with BOU WBA STO CPL/bha WHU as the potential rotation there.

All in all, big caveat is I'm only planning for the first 5/6 fixtures as the early WC often gets wielded between GW3-5.
Plus any pretence at rotation tends to go out of the window after GW2/3 anyway as other options push for our attention!

Has anyone really looked in to his stats when playing the full 90 mins? Of course it's easy to score when City are 4-0 up against Watford and he comes on at minute 77.

has anything happened with Michael Keane recently? Hoping he moves after pricing has happened then we can have him as a £5.0 option wherever he ends up, and Tarkowski for £4.0 at Burnley

Would people prefer several mid-range midfielders, or one/two expensive and then a few cheapies? For example:

    Pogba Ozil Siggy Pedro
    vs
    Sanchez Hazard Ritchie Phillips

Tough question. I'd be more comfortable having the former, but the latter would give you better captaincy options.

Number of captaincy option is important

If I have 3 forwards who are good enough for captaincy, then I'll go for mid-price quality midfield

Fixtures would play a part. But if couple of solid captaincy options are available in forwards, the mid - range one looks good

Similar reply to Holmes ... would prefer more Capt options so two big hitters from mids/strikers prefered.

If Arsenal sell Sanchez and Giroud and they sign the players I think will want to sign for them, then i think Arsenal will line up like this:

    -----------------------Cech----------------------
    ---------Mustafi---Koscielny---Monreal---

    --Bellerin-----Ramsey--Xhaka------Kolasinac-

    ---------------Ozil----------Iwobi-----

Who have been the best and worse bandwagons based on preseason friendlies? Obviously Boselli is the most legendary but there must be plenty of others and some successes too. I fell for the Routledge and Redmond combo trap last year although Redmond started well.

Oh yes, I ummed and ahhed for most of preseason then finally went for Graham and Kacanliklic instead of Petric and Michu.

Michu and Petric both scored twice, Graham and Kacanliklic points dodged spectacularly. Didn't buy Michu until January.

I think Capoue may go down at the greatest FFS bandwagon of them all - the only downside was that too many of us who had him in GWK 1 benched him early on. We should have had more faith in that bandwagon.

Few apart from us lot spotted that he was getting more forward in friendlies.

Not sure what happened there, I knew how he was looking but didn't get him. I bought him gw2 then promptly missed all his hauls on my bench. Sold him again gw8 after he dried up, never to return. Never got a point from him 😀

Jonty I remember you (quite rightly, let me stress!) on the scoutcast pointing out his stats were unsustainable which definitely deterred me lol - as is always the way, I did eventually fold and get him in on my WC in GW6 when he stopped scoring. Boo.

However, having him as my 4th (rather than 5th) mid meant I could afford Kaku Costa Kane as my front 3, so swings and roundabouts. He was then replaced by Allen to do the same thing.

Hardly a bandwagon but oddly, as he's one of the best picks in the game, Aguero a couple of years ago when he just couldn't hit a barn door for weeks on end...and then got five in one match.

Everybody had him set for a big season so we all had him and we all captained him for far too long. The (c) part is what sets him apart as the worst bandwagon pick ever imo...

Plenty of FPL players never fully recovered from that for the rest of the season.

    What the hell???/

"China's Under-20s team could play in the German fourth division next season.

Only 19 teams have qualified for the regional southwest league, with the German FA (DFB) inviting China to enter a team and create an even fixture list.

League executive Felix Wiedmann told German paper Bild "all 19 clubs" were in favour, adding: "I therefore believe the project is on a good path."

Small clarification: the results of the games against the Chinese team would not count towards the league table. They would basically form two in-season friendlies that each team had during the year. And both matches would be hosted by the German team, obviously, to ease logistics.

Should it go ahead, count me as totally in favour of this idea.

Central to any sensible plan unless another mid or striker emerges that actually finds the back of the net regularly on that team.

Must be development, some sort of clause to say he has to play in a certain amount of games. As you say, a bit of a funny move that one.

It is what he has been needing. Attitude needs honing. Tbf, Reading was an horrendous experience.

Missed some in the German section, including Denis Zakaria to Borussia-Park for 10m...

Köhn & Cuisance also missing. Only minor signings but they've included other youth signings like Hadžić, Emghames & Baller.

£25m-£35m is what I can see him going for, but I'd probably give £18-20m max.

IMO we don't need more players who flit in and out of games and who seemingly don't play up / lead on the pitch if things aren't going our way. We have too many "fair weather" players already; he wouldn't be an apt replacement for Sanchez, for example, despite being clearly very skillful.

Last season he also seemed to struggle with the extra attention teams paid him. That might also be a worry if he was to step up to a top 5 team.

I know who he is and where he was but how does he make Benteke a better prospect? Tekkers surely more suited to Allardyce's style of play than Cruyff's.

It looks like Januzaj is off to Real Sociedad on a permanent deal. Not sure if he was overhyped or that he just lacks the right mentality..

Becomes a world class prospect very easily in FIFA 15. Not physically strong enough for PL imo.

Overhyped, bit of a negative attitude on him and isn't a winger which I solely blame on Manchester United.

Always had a wee modicum of sympathy for Adnan. He was a CAM in the youth ranks and a very good one at that. Played winger only on the exceptionally rare occasion. Heads to the senior side and is flat out converted to winger despite having very few attributes for one. Typical United story, have players who are capable in a position, the likes of Mata, Kagawa, even Januzaj (I can't really say how he'd have done as a CAM in the PL given he never got his shot) and jam them on the wing. Probably one of the most bizarre habits United have formed over recent years.
