The Numbers Game – Burnley

Our series of pre-season team analysis articles continues with a look at Burnley.

First off, we check out the Clarets’ team numbers before casting on eye over their main goal threats and sources of creativity.

We’ll then take a closer look at the contrast between their home and away performances, bearing in mind that Burnley mustered just a single win and seven points on their travels in over 2016/17.

Relegated from the top-flight in 2014/15 after finishing second-bottom with 28 goals and 33 points, the Clarets bounced back at the first time of asking.

Returning as winners of the Championship, Sean Dyche’s side went on to secure their survival thanks mainly to a series of strong home performances – 33 of the Clarets’ 40 points and 26 of their 39 goals arrived at Turf Moor.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just a feeling but I think FPL will under value Coutinho (~9m) without taking into account how well he does/could still potentially do when playing deeper.

If Coutinho is 9 or under he is definitely one to get for me...

    Price predictions for Gabbriadini ?

I'm going to keep a close eye on him during preseason for any sign of a return to his preinjury form, he could be golden given Saints early fixtures.

Too much possible rotation up front for Saints for me.
      Austin/Long/Gabbi.I'll skip.
      Prob get Redmond instead.

Agreed on the rotation upfront. Only way I'll get Gabbiadini or Austin is if the other one is injured. Redmond is a risk too. Hopefully we get a good idea of who looks likely to start during pre-season but the new manager might like Boufal.

Ward-Prowse could be one to consider. Will be cheaper than the rest, sharing the set pieces, and if I remember correctly he's taken a penalty before.

Nacho to Leicester would be very interesting.
    Him and Vardy up front.

If that happens my 2nd and 3rd forward slot worries are over.

With great mid-priced options like Defoe, Benteke & Llorente, Nacho's arrival could signal a 13.0 - 7.5 - 7.5 ish front line, leaving a healthy pile of funds for the midfield 🙂

        4.5 - 4.0..................................8.5
        6.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0.........24
        10.5 - 9.5 - 8.0 - 7.0 - 4.5.......39.5
        13.0 - 7.5 - 7.5........................28

But of course, it depends on...

            Are they nailed?

I would like Aguero, but debating if having both Kane and Kun is the most cost effective use of funds. I'll hopefully be writing an article on big hitters soon. Waiting for prices first of course.

I think they should be.They played together towards the end of last season effectively with Aguero in the middle of the front 3 and Jesus on RW.

I'm personally going with Kane and Jesus and I would say a lot of managers will join me.

Oh and I look forward to that article mate.

Where does Bernardo fit in? And Sterling? And Sane? It's scary the depth they have.

Would really like a nailed City striker, so any sign one is and I'm in. But while there is doubt I question whether Jesus is worth around 4.0m more than a Defoe at Bournemouth, for example. Some tricky decisions to make, need more info from pre-season and pressers 🙂

If he gets picked to start he will be a great option. He was 6.0 this season which would be massive, if he can nail down a starting berth. But as b&w85 pointed out, the foxes have bough players for similar funds and they've not been starters. He's a wait and see for me.

🙂 they are a tough team to like. I just wanted us to get one result from our group. Thought the top goal scorer in all English leagues last season, as Captain of his country, in a major tournament (for us) would do better with the chances he was given. Not likely to grab a result now with Portugal next ...

Yes a few meters is significant. If you have 100 meter length pitch, just a couple extra meters in width adds 200 meters in area. That's a noticeable increase in amount of ground a team has to cover

              Several reasons.

              a. I have never used one before so don't know what it entails whereas I have used the system we use for the running of FIFFSA, the Chili Bowl and team UAE in the Cricket World cup
              b. Facebook is blocked at my work which would hinder me a lot and make it pretty much impossible tbh
              c. I quite like having gravs and usernames. It provides continuity between sites so you know who people are when you start having their real names it disassociates people

Unpleasant not being able to sleep when you need too. I find the switch from dayshift to night shift sometimes has this effect and with a baby in the house I am pretty much exhausted all of the time too

I kind of have a system now so after 4 years of it (scarily) I am pretty used to it. If you don't do it right it is easy to end up exhausted or unable to sleep though

Pulis seems to fancy Rondon for his aerial prowess (attacking and defence). He is ideal for WBs counter attack setup as a target man, for that reason I just dont see Jrod starting over Rondon. He might be used as a wide attacker and compete with Chadli or Phillips

Walker and Mcauley were the darlings in the beginning for most of the top 10 managers along with Luke Shaw and Valencia. Azpilicueta was also there in some of the teams.

Cahill's ownership started increasing at a high rate from gw 10. By that time, the ship had sailed some distance.
It kept on increasing from then and he was owned by 680k people by gw 38.

Had Alonso, McAuley and Coleman for a lot of their most prolific runs, they really were fantastic. I dont think they will be as prolific this season when output vs price is factored in so wont be in my gw1 team.

Only Valencia is penciled in atm.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Yeh, the cheaper ones who had a great season will get price hikes and lose value. Only the premier ones will retain value. I've pencilled in Valencia and Azpi along with a mid-priced Saint for early season fixtures, and maybe a couple of 4.5 starters from Brighton and Huddersfield.

        1. Ghost Gooner
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

Chelsea defenders might be Alonso 7, Cahill/Azpi 6.5, Luiz/Moses 6. Those prices would scare me from the lot.

I hope Tommy Smith is 4.5 to take a punt on a newly promoted team player otherwise I'll pass and go Olsson/Dawson/Mee rather

But look at the top scorers for Value (season). Investing 6m in a Chelsea defender will bring better returns than a 6m 4th-choice midfielder. At least, the Chelsea defender is a solid option; you'd have to be very lucky (like a 2015 Mahrez) to get equal value from the midfielder.

            Azpilicueta CHE £6.4 26.6
            Cahill CHE £6.7 26.6
            McAuley WBA £5.0 26.2
            Daniels BOU £5.2 25.8
            Alonso CHE £6.9 25.7
            Gibson MID £4.9 24.7

The most underrated defender among the above lot Charlie Daniels started off at the same price as that of Fpl rising star John Stones.
His performances were very inconsistent and his points spread throughout the season.
He would have been a good fire and forget option for people looking at two 5m defenders rather than a 5.5 and 4.5.

      1. Andy_Social

Agreed, but he'll get a price-hike. If Begovic comes in as a 4.5 keeper, I'm bagging him.

I expect Daniels and Smith to both be 5.0, making Begovic the cheaper option. Boruc got loads of save points; Beggers will be as busy but is a better keeper. I suspect opposing managers will be wiser to the abilities of Daniels and Smith this season.

Also interesting - more so in my opinion, is the Value (season) table. For goalkeepers and defenders there are loads of premium-priced players, suggesting investing a bit more (5.5 + 4.0 keeper, 2 premium defenders) can be a wise investment.

Going 3-5-2/4-4-2 is my plan this season. I just dont see any potential big scorers in the 3rd striker spots.

      Heaton 5/Foster 4.5 = 9.5

      Kompany 6 Valencia 6 Cedric 5
      (H)T Smith 4.5 (B)Rosenior 4 = 25.5

      Alexis 12 Sigurdsson 7.5 King 7
      Tadic 6.5 (N)Ritchie 5.5 = 38.5

      Kane 12 Jesus 10 (H)Quaner 4.5 = 26.5

      0 ITB

(Benteke/Firmino to replace Jesus if he is rotated or not as involved in goals as I would like and upgrade a mid)

That's pretty good. You only have one A-list midfielder though. I'd be concerned about gametime for City's bloated attacking squad, so I'm going for the cheaper Sane rather than Jesus. My draft midfield currently includes Pedro, Sane and Mane. Alongside Kane I'll have 2 b-list nailed-on strikers, maybe Llorente and Benteke.

Afobe late season scoring run, Wilson being healthy at the beginning of the season plus if Dafoe signs might be enough to keep him a mid hopefully.

Like Andy_Social says I might go for Stanislas or even Fraser for those pen assists alone

      I think I disagree.

On the first page of that tab there were:
      11 Keepers
      7 Defenders
      12 Midfielders

      .
      Of the 11 keepers:
      4.0m = 2
      4.5m = 3
      5.0m = 2
      5.5m = 4

      Top 3: 4.5m, 5.0m, 4.5m

Keepers are generally the best value players in the game. There were a lot of them here of all valuations. This tells me to go as cheap as possible. All you need is to find a decent 4.5m and you're set! with a great value player in the 1 active slot.

      .
      Of the 7 defenders:
      4.5 = 1
      5.0 = 2
      5.5 = 1
      6.0 = 3

      Top 3: 6.0m, 6.0m, 4.5m

No prizes for guessing who the three 6.0m defenders were. But you're right, there was only one 4.5m here, which does suggest go larger. But there were 5 midfielders all more expensive than the 3 Chelsea defenders in the top 30, (8.5, 7.5, 8.5). So taking too much from the attacking areas for the defence can hurt overall.

Also there is hidden value in rotation. You can rotate defenders and simulate higher value players across the 3 active slots. This is why I personally prefer to go cheaper there. You can't really rotate mids in the same way as attacking returns are harder to predict.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years

The returns of those 3 Chelsea defenders though... incredibly rare to see that. They all hit over 170pts - even the legendary Baines has only done that twice, and never over 177pts.

If it wasn't a fluke, and they survive huge rises, they may be worth considering again. I'll probably have 1 premium defender personally.

I think the Chelsea defences output was a result of circumstances (no CL and injuries). The additional games will pose a problem fatigue wise (forcing rotation) whilst exposing them to more chances of getting injured.

For that reason and their early fixtures I will monitor till the 1st international break (gw3)

Pretty much agreeing with you guys, particularly re rotation of Champs League qualifiers (of which there are 5 this season, leaving only Arsenal with a lighter fixture-load. Yeah, Arsenal ...)

The one point I'd like to contest is with Giggs Boson re keepers. My point is, the highest value ones were Heaton, Forster and Boruc, with Grant not far behind (and he came onboard later in the season). My point is, who honestly predicted they'd have glorious seasons before the season began? You have to be pretty damn lucky to choose the right 4.5 punt from the off, whereas for an extra 0.5 you get security (in terms of a 5.5+4.0 rather than a pair of 4.5s).

My main concern is that the 5 CL qualifiers (esp Liverpool who start early) will need to rotate their squads massively, especially wingbacks, midfielders and strikers, leaving it quite the lottery choosing premier players who will get sufficient PL gametime.

The best value midfielder was Capoue. It is to my eternal frustration that I actually had him from GW1, and for all but one scoring game he was sat on my bench as he kept on hitting the onion bag early doors! You might want to call that bad management, but it also indicates that it is almost impossible to anticipate the cheapies that become world-beaters. I think this time last season more people were excited about Palace's Bakery Sako than Capoue.

I'll be bulking out my squad with tried 'n' tested sorts with cheap punts on the periphery (i.e. the 4th/5th defenders and 5th midfielder whose failures won't hurt me (unless they keep scoring on the bench like Capoue!)

I see just about everyone is starting with Kane. The last couple of years he's started slowly so wouldn't it be better to start with Alli/Eriksen & pass on him. The money saved could be used elsewhere in m/f or def.

I'm mindful of that, although IIRC that was caused by injury and post-Europe fatigue. This season he starts fresh. Having said that, the Wembley factor worries me. For me a deciding factor is fear of not having him when everyone else does and ending up with too much ground to make up.

Yeah, that's my feeling. I'd like to hang onto my WC for as long as possible although I've never made it past GW5. This year will be different!

Having said that, whilst I expect Everton to have a fine season, I'm avoiding them for now due to those opening fixtures. They might come into their own while the Big 5 rotate for Europe.

I usually keep mine for the nov international break as there is more data available by then and the need to take out South American players as they are almost always rested upon their return.

The Everton defence is also on my watchlist (Baines might be 0.3 cheaper by then). Davies and Klassen will be ones to watch in mid

What you say is correct. But is it worth the risk??? 50% ownership, easiest of fixtures, highly captained. Anywhere close to a haul would mean a disastrous start for non owners. Besides,it is easier to sell him than buy him.

Aguero was 13.0 beginning of last season, so Kane'll be the same.

Team balance could be most intriguing this season. I'm expecting us to be able to afford only 3 A-list premium Strikers/Midfielders whilst keeping a balance. If inflexible sorts insist on 4, they could be fatally weakened overall. I also think prices at the top end will even out, with the likes of Hazard, Sanchez and Alli priced the same, meaning a lot more variety and less template teams, which can only be good.

We had a lot of variety last season with certain MID's priced 10+ and you could make a great team if you ignored Aguero. It's going to be harder this season.

I started with Kane instead of Ibra last season and regretted it. Not sure what I'll do this season but the Wembley factor does put me off a little - reasonably well documented that teams' home form suffers the season they move grounds. I don't usually pay the slightest attention to ownership either which probably makes me more likely than most to see this as a realistic option.

I'm worried about City. Pep's got a lot of players to fit in - B. Silva, D. Silva, KdB, Sane, Sterling, Jesus, Kun going forward and he'll also need some sort of defensive counterbalance like Gundog/Fernandinho involved. Can see something like a 2-6-2 being implemented with 2 false centre backs... Pep meta team

Kane I think needs to go in. Sanchez too. Not too sure on Eriksen if I have Kane as well, and we need to look at Chelsea's opening fixtures, so it might be the case that Willian or Pedro sneaks in (Haz out) as a 3rd mid and I get Mane/Coutinho instead as the other premium.

Also looking at going 13.0 / 7.5 (Tekkers probs) / 4.5 up top to help facilitate a killer midfield.

      1. FC Lackless [BALEGIUM]
        • 7 Years

Interesting ..I'd not really considered one premium striker but as you say you then get a killer midfield. Jesus is in because I think he's great value for money ... slight concern over his injury though. I'm still looking at 352 but as I think the midfield picks in the 6-8m region are fairly evenly matched I can still fit in Kane, Jesus and a decent midfield.

Yeah 6-8m will have a lot of options I think. JRod (if he goes to WBA) might be one to watch as an OOP prospect, especially as he could be being signed to replace Berahino. 15 goals in 13/14! Similarly, Chadli at WBA could be another to watch out for... 11 g 6a for Spurs in 14/15! With their fixtures one of them could be gold.

I'm hugely likely to put Antonio in, though. I just love the guy.

Always starts slow, plus a bit of a risk at Wembley.

Will have to see what the other options are. To some extent, going against having Kane - whom surely the maj will buy - in your team could be regarded as overthinking, though I'd be interested in the balance of "non-Kane" sides (assuming he is 13.0m)

Tbh I'll be experimenting in the first couple of weeks and playing quite puntily, then pull early WC as soon as it's clear what's working and what isn't, so I could well find myself Kane-less til I do that. Worry is he scores in GW1 and you end up paying 13.1... 13.2...

Aguero also has a lot better shooting stats over the last few games. Will depend on price. City just appears a minefield currently. De Bruyne is the only tempting option for me.

For strikers I'm currently looking at Kane Lukaku then one of Defoe (if moved to Bournemouth) and Llorente (if still main Swansea striker). If Morata joins then I would be tempted. All speculation at the moment though.

Llorente also dependant on what happens with Siggy

Yeah Siggy is the unknown there - Everton have signed Klaassen now so maybe it won't be where he goes. Apart from that, tough to see where he could go.

Defoe or Tekkers for me in the cheap striker bracket - I'm going 3-5-2 with Kane + Defoe/Tekkers + 4.5. Tekkers has the edge due to HUD in GW1 then away at 'Pool (got me a brace last season in DGW) in GW2. But a fair bit depends on the identity of the new manager.

Don't know who my top two strikers will be. One will probably be jesus, and the other may be kane. The third will be a cheapy -- don't kn ow who

If you didn't go with Kane early, and he's likely to have a 50% ownership, does that mean we're more likely to benefit from a drop in price (from that high base), when looking at early WCs, as people would have to completely re-design their team to transfer him in if needed, but would easily sell if another striker started quickly?

I'll monitor the prices but it's an easy downgrade if someone else emerges. He will probably get 25+ goals this season aswell so with patience you will probably gain that lost cash and more anyway. I've been to knee jerky previous seasons so I'm sticking to the proven players this year.

Could go either way, couldn't it?

Could drop in points if he has his customary slow start... but what if he smashes it early on?

As you say, it's easier to trade down and redistribute than desperately scrabble for funds if he scores in GW1 and suddenly there's a bandwagon for the most expensive player (probs) in the game.

      All conjecture atm of course!

It's a gamble but you could pick up Kane for 0.1-0.4 below his starting price if he does indeed start the season slowly and has that high an ownership level.

Any casual players starting with him will quickly switch to someone else straight away rather than holding.

If he starts with a high ownership in GW1, which is likely, it will take a lot for meaningful price drops unless they change the price drop formula.

I've never quite understood the price drop criteria, noticed Ibra didn't go down last year during his suspension, even though everyone was selling him in droves

The best guess on the price drop formula is that it's based on a percentage of the players ownership selling, but red and yellow flags can slow and sometimes even halt price drops.

Also, whisper it quietly, but I'm legitimately considering Pogba in my first draft (assuming he's had a deserved price slash from last year). Am I mad?

Not bad but we gotta see who they buy and how Moanie sets up the team. If Pogba has to play deep it's not good; if he's released to roam and get forward, he'll be value.

Nope. I'm considering Mkhitaryan for the same reasons. Since they finished 6th and were just stodgy all round last year, so we could see a ~0.5 trim in some of their assets' value I reckon, using what happened to 'Pool/Chelsea after 15/16 as an outline (Cout 8.0 / DC 9.5)

Mkhi started at 9.5 but ended 8.7. Price of 9.0 possible, 8.5 would be really generous (but unlikely)
Pog at 8.5 and ended 8.2. Could an 8.0 be on the cards? I think he'll be 8.5

Either way, getting some United in your team to begin with looks like a must - so either of those could fill a gap.
Unknown is Morata: if he signs, we suddenly will have a strong captain choice for GW1 (ditto if Kaku returns to Chelsea) and we might end up going for him over the other two.

Don't have any stats to hand but I seem to remember people posting on twitter figures regarding the number of chances created by Pogba but missed by Ibra et all.

If Man Utd do sign someone DM based to free him up then he could be a good shout as I see him less likely to be rotated than the other Man Utd options.

I think I want him aswell should United sign another DM. Might even be on penalties?

Is there a good site where they track preseason games and report on them as the summer goes on?

We will track all the pre-season matches - reporting on key events and have a pre-season guide which tracks results, scorers and form players.
