Great Expectations – Paul Pogba

Returning to Manchester United from Juventus for a world record transfer fee last summer, it’s fair to say that Paul Pogba failed to live up to the considerable hype.

The Frenchman signed off from Serie A duties by delivering eight goals and 12 assists in 35 league outings in 2015/16 but struggled to replicate that output under Jose Mourinho.

A total of five goals and four assists across 30 league outings earned a total of just 115 points in 2015/16 – placing him as lowly as thirty-third among Fantasy Premier League midfielders.

Meanwhile, an average of 3.8 points per match (ppm) in FPL was some way behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 5.8 ppm as the Red Devils struggled for a cutting edge in Mourinho’s first season at the helm.

But heading into their second season, there is building anticipation of bigger things to come from both Mourinho and his record signing.

  • Having started last season priced at 8.5 in FPL, Pogba’s tally of 115 points – placing him behind Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend and on a par with West Bromwich Albion’s Matt Phillips – certainly suggests that the Frenchman will avoid a price hike. With the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and the main midfielders from both Spurs and Liverpool all destined to rise in light of their 2016/17 endeavours, Pogba could emerge as an unlikely value option.
  • Pogba’s end-of-season output may well hint at what’s to come next time around. A goal and assist against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 38 – equaling his campaign-high haul in a 44-minute first-half cameo – was then followed by the opener in United’s Europa League final win over Ajax. That was the first time in 2016/17 that he’d scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions and strengthens the theory that he could become a more pivotal figure with Ibrahimovic out of the picture.
  • Handed his debut in Gameweek 2, Pogba was one of the few assured starters under Mourinho last season, finishing every league match from that point onwards until he was ruled out of the Gameweek 29 encounter against Middlesbrough with a hamstring problem. Although his minutes were managed towards the end of the campaign due to the club’s Europa League run, Pogba started more league matches (29) than any United outfield player in 2016/17.
  • In the final third, Pogba claimed first place for touches (860) and successful passes (477) for United and was second only to Ibrahimovic for passes received (566 to 569). With ball-playing centre-half Viktor Lindelof now on board, there’s a feeling that Pogba will not be required to drop deep to orchestrate attacks and instead edge further forward as Mourinho makes his customary second-season charge for the title. This could be particularly pertinent, given that only 37 of Pogba’s 92 efforts last term arrived from inside the opposition’s penalty area.
  • Ranked top for key passes (57) for Mourinho’s side, Pogba was second only to Ibrahimovic (115) for total attempts and placed seventh among FPL midfielders. While a dire 5.4% conversion rate sums up his disappointing campaign, his average of 28.3 minutes per shot – bettered only by four regular midfielders – illustrates his propensity to look for goal.
  • The opening schedule also strengthens United’s bid to get off to a flier. Bearing in mind that they play only one of last season’s top six (WHM, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot, CPL, liv, hud) in the first nine Gameweeks, investment in Mourinho’s regulars looks set to be a popular strategy. With uncertainty still hanging over their first-choice striker for the campaign ahead, Pogba has the chance to play his way into our initial squad planning.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

This Grenfell cladding thing is unbelievable. People blaming the Government and Councils, but what about the private companies that are doing the work? So many cowboys who can't even read or write properly - why you need to check things yourselves and most of them just want to keep costs down, cut corners and pull a fast one.

Building regs and planning are supposed to stop any chance of that happening...so of course the councils and govt are responsible.

If you think that, you have no idea how government and public sector tendering and procurement works. The government is to blame, as is the company who did it.

These things usually go out to tender and as before were it use to be 80% quality and 20% cost it has now gone full circle and most tenders are now 80% cost and 20% quality and government departments are responsible for changing these tenders. So basically the cheapest price gets the job and this means people cutting corners and putting in inferior goods and materials.

I have seen it with my own eyes when somebody refuses to accept the cheapest tender because they know the company carrying out the work were cowboys and disqualified them it ended up in a court case and the cowboys won. The government needs to put quality before cost again

Government and Councils build sh!tholes like this and retrofitting such property's stinks that it was not done right in the first place so they should tare buildings like this down instead of papering over the cracks.

Speaking from experience any building company has to comply with the building regulations by law and are liable if it is not up to scratch.

Any work done for the likes of the UK government is thoroughly inspected and the tender process is designed to get the best deal for the tax payer as well as been in compliance with the reg.

You are jumping to conclusions about the workmanship of the guys that fitted that cladding instead of laying blame on the bad engineering and shoddy reg where the real problem is.

He had the same problem as Clyne early on last season for Liverpool.

Clyne created loads of chances for Liverpool but their strikers turned to kak every time he put the ball in. Ibra was the same with Pogba...

Yep and this should change when we get a better striker to put his chances away. It's fine margins like these that if were different, would mean we'd have a different perception of Pogba FPL-wise. Another of these was him hitting the post many times. Another fine margin that could have changed a whole lot. Really have high expectations for him this season,

I guess the main issue there for me is that if a player is going to cost that much, he should be able to affect games to greater degree through his own will and talent and not rely on others to make him look like a standout. He never seemed able to do that to me, and I'm not sure it's really ever going to be like that with him. I don't want to judge him on his price alone, of course, but it has to come into play when weighing it all out, and generally speaking, he was pretty disappointing on the whole. Or way too often.

I do agree. Price shouldn't be a major issue when evaluating a player at all, but he does need to impact the games more than he did. Having said that, he did better than people make out on here. It's also a common theory on here that a new DM signing (hopefully Fabinho) will give Pogba more license to roam and so impact games more. I really do believe this to be true myself, as attacking players can lose effectiveness when they're restricted by a manager as defensive as Mou. Look at Mkhi for example. Salah could be another one too He didn't really get a great shot under Mou and Mou's defensive style is one reason for his failure in the PL the last time.

Well said. I do think he would shine more with an increased level of attacking. He needs to be in and around the box more often with that frame and such. A good DM signing should really allow for this. And I'm sure he was feeling a lot of pressure last season, which I could see diminishing with the kinds of transfer fee rumors floating around right now.

He is with his finishing but my point is that every Liverpool striker was wasteful with the chances he made for them as well. Bizarre really.Given how far forward he played at times, especially early on, I'd have expected at least a reasonable number of assists...Just never happened though.

Hope FPL put the foot down and place LFC players in the correct positions. Don't want another season where their starting XI is a GK and 10 midfielders.

Not saying this because of 'midfield minefield' but because it limits options in other positions. Sometimes you want to replace a DEF/FWD and LFC have nice fixtures but you can't get any of their players because all of them are classified as midfielders.

In my view, Klopp likes Bobby cos he keeps harrying and moving defenders out of position so the likes of Coutinho and Mane can get involved. He did get 11g 11a, but to accommodate Salah too and give Liverpool that option I just reckon he might be the man charged with making space for the wingers. A deep lying forward (s) in FM terms.

Next year we'll say "member when Bobby was a midfielder"?

I just think if I want a Liverpool mid it will be Coutinho or Mane. Having Firmino as a forward gives me the option of picking him without using up another midfield slot which could go to one of the many strong midfield picks (Sanchez, Hazard, KDB, Eriksen, Alli, Ozil, Sane, Pedro, Sigurdsson, etc.). Basically I think there's plenty midfield options without Firmino in there whereas the forward department is a bit lacking.

Think that's valid, especially around 8.5-9.0 for forwards.

Much will depend on Klopp's tactics around using Salah in that side. If Bobby is indeed more deep lying or focused on running the defence then we might see his points hauls eaten into by Salah a bit.

Definitely depends on the available options once the prices are out.

I felt like that was basically Firmino's role last season anyway and he still did well.

Yep definitely true, will have to see when Salah comes in.

Biggest casualty could be Lallana. But all conjecture. Salah to be benched now he's been hyped

Looking at some of the more recent Serie A transfers to the EPL, they haven't been all that successful early on. Salah might be a bit different since he was already strangled by Chelsea in his first stint, maybe Jose is to blame for the lack of output, who's to say?

Coutinho trasnfers from Inter Milan during the 2012/13 season featured in just 10 games and scored 3 goals. In fact wasn't impressive at all over the course of parts of 3 seasons. His first full year at Liverpool, 33 games, 5 goals.

Mario Ballotelli, 2009/10 in 26 games, 9 goals. Upon his move to City 2010/11 in 17 games, 6 goals. The following season 13 goals in 23 games.

Juan Cuadrado, played very well in Serie A for Fiorentina and Juve, but couldn't fit in at Chelsea. Erik Lamela, 15 goals in 33 games for Roma 2012/2013, moving to Spurs, no goals in 9 games in 2013/14 and just 2 goals the following year.

Not very good transition record for players posting promising number in Serie A moving to the EPL. I feel Salah will struggle a second time. In fact I don't think he even starts, fielded as a #4 or #5 midfielder. The site 4-4-2 had a good article on why Serie A players flop - https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/why-do-so-many-big-serie-signings-flop-premier-league

Interesting video on playing time according to age https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJRD536o_BY

Playing time tends to increase with age. I immediately though of Jesus, and how out of all the attacking talent at City, his age may hinder his gametime over the whole season. Yes, Pep does seem to like him, but he also has more options this season, and Jesus did have a few injury problems. Just something to muddy the waters 🙂

I think we see just as many imports being instant successes and then completely disappearing like Cisse, Sakho, Ba and Ighalo.

Most of it comes down to role. Hazard, Mata, Silva, Sanchez, Ozil, Payet and Aguero got the role they needed to succeed relatively early. If Salah is a starter as a winger then he should be a good FPL pick from the beginning. If he ends up in purgetory like Mkhi then I'd avoid.

Liverpool has the right playstyle to make Salah work, and they seriously needed another winger last year.

God knows but 30 million back then was a massive fee that turned out to be a bargain after 12 years service 6 League titles CL title and god knows what else on top..

Rumours are Chelsea are now in the running for Big Virg and Roman will pull whatever Liverpool offer out of his back pocket

If VVD goes to Chelsea after the game launches, he's FPL gold. 5.5 for a Chelsea defender with huge goal threat. Dream scenario that.

If Lukaku can score 25 goals with Barkley and Mirallas setting him up, I wonder how many he'd score at United or Chelsea with Pogba or Hazard...

That man was born for the Premier League.

I feel like he could be to Costa what Sheva and Torres were to Drogba. Playstyles matter a lot, and Lukaku will never be a workhorse. I don't see him being a complete flop like the others, but I could see Conte putting him on the bench a fair bit.

Not convinced he'd score more than Costa personally. Chelsea could suffer from the lack of all round play that Costa brings when compared to Lukaku

I like Llorente of those, assuming Siggy stays. Depends on price though, obvs.

Why are you committing to 3 playing forwards? Surely the question is who scores more points out of 3rd strikers and remaining midfielder and defender slots...

Ill take a fourth defender over that third forward. Unless of course there is more consistency found up top. Llorente isn't the answer.

Which tactics do you prefer for selecting GK?

    A. choose an expensive GK and leaving a cheap 4.0m back-up on the bench.

    B. go for a pair of similarly priced goalkeepers and swap them in and out according to the difficulty or home away

For A I might go for De Gea, Ederson or Heaton and cheap 4.0 and B for Fraser Foster and Begovic.

    Thx you

Not keen on any of the cheap rotation options this time around... will probably do Foster + 4.0... WBA have great fixies early on, and I'll likely WC before long.

    2. Deulofail

Neither. The 2 cheapest playing keepers. Which is sometimes B, but could just mean playing one most of the time of he's better than the other

Cheap as I can get. But I prefer two playing keepers

Pricing and fixtures matter a lot to me.

Are there any potential 4.0s available?

Are the biggest premium gks (De Gea, Lloris, Courtois) considerably cheaper and more nailed than their defenders?

Are any gks from the stable bottom teams (Fabianski, Heaton, Foster, Butland, Valdes, Schmeichel) priced at 4.5?

Is the backup gk for mid tier teams with strong fixtures (Forster) priced at 4.0?

Usually I'll get two cheap gks from the likes of Swansea, Stoke and WBA. Those teams tend to get a few CS every year. I'll also consider the gks that did well the previous season without scoring big, like Schmeichel two years ago.

Last year i deviated and started with De gea and Heaton, which was too expensive. This year I'm thinking Forster with 4.0 backup and then switch to Heaton in GW12.

You lucked out with Heaton. Otherwise that would have been an embarrassing decision (like the decision I took to participate in FPL)

I'm going Heaton & Foster but when prices come out it'll probably be too expensive.

So what your saying is you're decision is going to be based on prices and you haven't made a decision on who you will go with? Unprecedented!

I won't have him GW1 but I don't get all the hate. He never settled in England while at Chelsea and never really got a chance on the pitch, he's improved and now has a point to prove.

Very fast player. Should act as a good replacement for Mane if the last season's system is followed. If Coutinho plays deeper, then him and Mane should form a good partnership with Mane.
Have to see how he does in England.
      8.5 imo.
