Great Expectations – Paul Pogba

Returning to Manchester United from Juventus for a world record transfer fee last summer, it’s fair to say that Paul Pogba failed to live up to the considerable hype.

The Frenchman signed off from Serie A duties by delivering eight goals and 12 assists in 35 league outings in 2015/16 but struggled to replicate that output under Jose Mourinho.

A total of five goals and four assists across 30 league outings earned a total of just 115 points in 2015/16 – placing him as lowly as thirty-third among Fantasy Premier League midfielders.

Meanwhile, an average of 3.8 points per match (ppm) in FPL was some way behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 5.8 ppm as the Red Devils struggled for a cutting edge in Mourinho’s first season at the helm.

But heading into their second season, there is building anticipation of bigger things to come from both Mourinho and his record signing.

  • Having started last season priced at 8.5 in FPL, Pogba’s tally of 115 points – placing him behind Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend and on a par with West Bromwich Albion’s Matt Phillips – certainly suggests that the Frenchman will avoid a price hike. With the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and the main midfielders from both Spurs and Liverpool all destined to rise in light of their 2016/17 endeavours, Pogba could emerge as an unlikely value option.
  • Pogba’s end-of-season output may well hint at what’s to come next time around. A goal and assist against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 38 – equaling his campaign-high haul in a 44-minute first-half cameo – was then followed by the opener in United’s Europa League final win over Ajax. That was the first time in 2016/17 that he’d scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions and strengthens the theory that he could become a more pivotal figure with Ibrahimovic out of the picture.
  • Handed his debut in Gameweek 2, Pogba was one of the few assured starters under Mourinho last season, finishing every league match from that point onwards until he was ruled out of the Gameweek 29 encounter against Middlesbrough with a hamstring problem. Although his minutes were managed towards the end of the campaign due to the club’s Europa League run, Pogba started more league matches (29) than any United outfield player in 2016/17.
  • In the final third, Pogba claimed first place for touches (860) and successful passes (477) for United and was second only to Ibrahimovic for passes received (566 to 569). With ball-playing centre-half Viktor Lindelof now on board, there’s a feeling that Pogba will not be required to drop deep to orchestrate attacks and instead edge further forward as Mourinho makes his customary second-season charge for the title. This could be particularly pertinent, given that only 37 of Pogba’s 92 efforts last term arrived from inside the opposition’s penalty area.
  • Ranked top for key passes (57) for Mourinho’s side, Pogba was second only to Ibrahimovic (115) for total attempts and placed seventh among FPL midfielders. While a dire 5.4% conversion rate sums up his disappointing campaign, his average of 28.3 minutes per shot – bettered only by four regular midfielders – illustrates his propensity to look for goal.
  • The opening schedule also strengthens United’s bid to get off to a flier. Bearing in mind that they play only one of last season’s top six (WHM, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot, CPL, liv, hud) in the first nine Gameweeks, investment in Mourinho’s regulars looks set to be a popular strategy. With uncertainty still hanging over their first-choice striker for the campaign ahead, Pogba has the chance to play his way into our initial squad planning.

Quite a few getting stick for tinkering with teams before prices come out. Personally I think it's a useful exercise to work through ideas/formations etc and anyway it's good fun. To be honest I find when it all kicks off and especially match days all a bit stressful which is a sad state of affairs really.

Open question but would like a TM response if possible ! Team building the temptation is to have a 4m fifth defender to release funds elsewhere but if one plans to be active in the transfer market/bandwagons etc, does it make more sense to have 4.5m fifth defender to lessen the chance of taking a hit to bring a player in ?

If you're going to be chopping and changing your cheap defenders, I guess so.

You could always change a 5th defender with money in the bank.

In practice, you will probably never get round to changing these cheap enablers until you Wildcard (look at Amat last season) and so it is really important to choose well going into GW 1

Will tell you based on my experience.
Last season I started off like this:
          Heaton Foster
Friend Stones Evans Shaw D.Love. 3m itb.
By gw 4, I wildcarded and got Kingsley instead of love which was a bad choice too. Since the wild card was over, I was stuck with him for a long time. The next time I wildcarded, in gw 21 a cheap good option called Yoshida had emerged. What I learned was that having a cheap option is not worth it if you have injury prone players like Evans and Friend.
Another lesson was to monitor a championship player properly before bringing him in.

Same every year. 4 low price players. 1 keeper 2 defenders 1 mid. ideal 13 out of 15 in your squad playing regularly to start.

Food for thought; I have considered both 4th and 5th mids as playing 4.5's. More flexibility, rotation opportunities and back-up if injuries. If only we could nail a 4m def before the season starts ...sure that's what people will be looking out for in pre-season.

Thought of this myself but there is a 2 point expectation for a 4.5 mid and it generally works out that 5.5 or 6 mil mid comes up trumps. You will almost be forcing yourself into a 4 3 3 formation from the start.

to some extent it will depend on your formation, if you're going 3 at the back i don't think a fifth defender is worth it, may as well have a 4.0 that you can leave to rot on the bench for the entire season, however with much talk of wingbacks and value to be found in defence (what with expected price increases of the usual suspects in midfield and up front) and potential for oop wingbacks, there is even an argument to play 4 or even 5 at the back, in which case a good 4.5m 5th def would be a must imo, have to see prices/options come 10th July

I plan on two premium defenders and a rotation of three budget defenders, each at 4.5. Will cost me 25m, which is a bit more than I know many managers are will to pay for their backline but I am taking a different strategy this year. I plan on rotating with either BOU/SWA/WAT ot BUR/STO/WBA. Really dependent on that budget defender at 4.5 or even at 4.0.

Clubs seem to be going crazy for Mbappe. Does anyone know much about him? Would it be like a young Messi or Ronaldo joining the premier league? Or is he more likely to flop and be a colossal waste of money like Pogba? (Mourinho is still a genius, by the way. £150m - £200m spent to finish lower in the league than Van Gaal. Why can't Arsenal fans show their manager some Blind love like that?)

Paris St-Germain have offered Monaco a world record £119m for 18-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe. (Mirror)

But Arsenal are preparing a new bid with Arsenal Wenger confident of a deal for the in-demand forward. (Metro)

And the highly-rated 18-year-old is open to the idea of moving to Arsenal. (Telegraph)

Liverpool's 100m euros (£87.89m) bid for the Monaco forward has been rejected. (Marca)

He is said to have had a conversation with Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane. (L'Equipe - in French)

Really don't know much about him except the CL games and a few Ligue 1 games. He's good if the matches are to be trusted upon.
150m is ridiculous money. Spending that money on the youth academies can produce an English Mbappe.

I don't think he's a fpl game changer. I think it's more of a flashy show off signing for the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal like Odegaard.
And as far as Liverpool are concerned, I think the news is horseshite.

They say he's like a young Thierry Henry but who knows? They both played for Monaco, both broke Monaco's record for youngest ever player to make an appearance and both had good striking records.

The only difference is that Mbappe's 100m+ evaluation has bene plucked out of thin air and the hype is ridiculous because this is all after just one convincing season. To spend all that money and rely so much on a player who has a 0.5 goal per game ratio in such a poor league and only ever did it once is not a great idea IMO. The price being quoted should be the price that clubs have to pay after someone else took a gamble and he did the business for a couple more seasons.

His basic skills are so good that risk of him flopping is as low as it gets, thats why so many clubs are prepared to pay that kind of money for him, even "normal" spending clubs like arsenal and liverpool.
Because most probably he is worth the money businesswise and sportingwise

I've watched him regularly in the French league and he is a gem. He's beyond Henry. Now, he's surely not worth 100M and is nowhere near being a prized FPL asset. He still has a lot to prove cuz even in this season's French league, he didn't clinch a starting berth til well into the second half of the season. He's burgeoning and needs some time to blossom and that's why his entourage is poised enough to advise him to stay one more year at Monaco. He will likely take heed of their advice because he himself is extremely poised as well (for a teenager).

Real will likely buy him and loan him back to Monaco for this crucial pre-world cup season; which leads me to the bottom-line that I surely don't see him in the EPL for this upcoming season.

Darn it cuz by that logic, it means I wrote this paragraph for friggin nothing lol.

Reports from france says he did better in the Champions league than the domestic league, and that´s largely to do with his playing style. He needs room to explore and to use his strengths and is somewhat limited when space is shutted when opponents parrking the bus as they normally did in domestic games, so thrived in CHL because Monacos opponents let them have spaces to run into. He got enormous pace and his ability on the ball is quite good. For a 18 year old he is quite physical too. Clinical in front of goal. I´m not a fan really, i think he is hyped quite a bit, but i do see that he has potential, though. A lot of potential.

i've got the horrible feeling of deja vu, that we'll hope as usual that we'll make the 2 or 3 key signings we need to compete, and come august we'll only have Kolasinac and a couple of youth/reserve team players to show for our transfer attempts, not to mention who we might lose - just can't see us getting Mbappe, i'd settle for Lacazette and keeping Sanchez, but still feel we need more than that, we've been crying out for a top top striker for years

The Wenger way makes it difficult to use a target man. You need a man of steel in front of the back 4/3 if not 2. I rate Giroud personally. Look at his mins per goal.

I think Giroud is pretty good value for the club, always scores a reasonable amount of goals when given playing time, he's just not at that elite level where he'll scare the opposition and rip them apart ala Henry/Wright/Anelka/RVP - playing Giroud with Sanchez coming in from wider positions works for me, but would still love someone with a little more pace and guile up front

Not really. The key will be Ross moving on. Siggy will be 40 mil and Ross a similar price. The irony is Spurs by buying Ross will determine ex Spurs Siggy's fate.

At first £40m looked ridiculous, but you may be right in today's market (unless he asked to leave). At the moment a £20m purchase is bench fodder for most Premier League teams.

Maybe up to 8.0 which would make him just a bit too much for me sadly.

It didn't work well when he moved to Tottenham 5 years ago - he never nailed down a place so was a complete non-option in FPL. If he nailed a place at Everton then it would be interesting - might get a few more attacking returns simply by being in a better side but probably wouldn't hog the bonus so much and would have a fight on his hands for penalties. I prefer him at Swansea personally.

Yeah I do like the idea. I do also like looking at rotations but there's obviously the caveat that rotation goes out of the window pretty soon after GW1 (at least for me!). One I found on the day I liked was CPL/BUR/WHU actually, first 10:
      HUD
      WBA
      SWA
      HUD
      SOT
      HUD
      SWA
      WHU
      BHA
      NEW

Not bad until your first WC.

I'm thinking for 4.5 from those, or even PvA once FdB is appointed if I can spare the cash from upfield, plus Dawson from WBA for their opening fixtures (5.0 I reckon), and then a premium defender (dk who yet).

Yup, since we haven't seen any prices, just speculation from the brain trust, I am planning on rotation three defenders in the 4.5 price range. The combinations will be either BOU/SWA/WAT or BUR/STO/WBA. Much of this strategy will be dependent on the price of the budget defender, but feel rather confident I can find a 4.5 from each team.

Who else has penciled in Trippier in for next season.

What price do we think he is going to be? £5m tops

Very interested, 4 assists in 4 games I think it was end of last season. If he dodges the 5.5 and Walker is sold on he's surely in the majority of teams.

Surely he won't be 5.5. He didn't play nowhere near enough games to warrant that price.

No way will he be 5.0. Prices are based on potential as well as points. 5.5 minimum.

what evidence do you have that prices are based on potential?

5.5m if Walker gone. Can't see how they can do it for 5m if he's likely to play regularly.

If both are still at the club when the site is updated, then Walker will be 6 and Tripps 5.

Gotta see how Spurs play on a bigger pitch that what White Hart Lane had. Trippier could be a gem but if the pitch will cause tactic issues for Spurs I might consider passing on their defenders
