The Numbers Game – Chelsea

Our series of pre-season team analysis articles now turns to focus on champions Chelsea.

To open, we compare the Blues’ displays against 2015/16 before assessing their main goal threat and creators over their triumphant campaign. We’ll also take a closer look at their performances in the 3-4-3 formation deployed from Gameweek 7 by head coach Antonio Conte, and offer a view on the prospects of key assets for the new season.

After ending their defence of the title with a disastrous tenth place finish in 2015/16, there was considerable room for improvement under the new management regime.

Handed the reins last summer, Conte benefitted from the Blues’ lack of European duties by returning them to the summit at the first attempt, with a tactical switch to a 3-4-3 fundamental to many Fantasy managers’ plans.

The Stamford Bridge outfit found the net on 85 occasions – second only to Spurs’ 86 and up markedly from 59 in the previous campaign.

Sanchez to City rumours are strong enough we need to think about them.

Where do you think he'd line up? Who would he harm as an FPL prospect and who would he help? Would it make him a better or worse option?

If Sanchez arrives, I think Aguero leaves - it may even be a straight swap plus money if Aguero fancies it.

Sané, Sanchez, Jesus spearheading the Citeh attack, all capable of playing wide or through the middle.

do you think where he is come early july will affect sanchez classification?

i don't think it's likely, but if Aguero moved to Arsenal, he would be nailed for every game, no Pep rotation there, would be a must have fpl asset

Left forward I imagine, but Pep likes them to interchange which will suit Sanchez perfect. I think he will be amazing at City and he's pretty much always the first name on my FPL teamsheet.

LF, although I don't think Aguero will leave. Maybe Arsenal are waiting to make a big signing before they let the Sanchez transfer go through....

if anything i think sanchez would be a worse prospect at city, rotation risk, so may other attacking options, and at Arsenal he gets to largely be the kingpin, Pep wouldn't allow that at City

I just saw this, so if you're still here...I much prefer your suggestion. It's actually Messi's head, photoshopped onto a cartoon of Ozymandias, which has been my grav since I wrote a blog about the Barcelona empire supposedly falling about five years ago. If this happens, which i think would be a ridiculous thing. City will be some outfit if they sorted their def out.

      Sane Sanchez Jesus
      KDB Silva
      Gundogan
      XXX XXX XXX Dani Alves
      Ederson

Feel sorry for arsenal fans, clubs moving backwards...

Morning scouts, hope your all having a good summer break!

Does anyone know when the £12.50 membership offer ends? Just waiting for payday next week 🙂

Also, let's talk Mohamed Salah... I think he could be a fantastic FPL asset under Klopp next season, what do you guys think?

I think Liverpool signing Salah is hilarious. I was worried before the transfer window started that Klopp would buy good players and they'd be in with a shout for the title. Thank goodness they've got Salah and aren't making a move for Van Dijk.

Show me a recent player from Serie A that has thrived in their first year in the EPL? Yes, Salah wasn't impressive at Chelsea in his first go around, but I still feel he doesn't perform as well as he did for the 2 seasons at Roma.

We might get Ederson at 5m given Citeh's defensive record last year. If so, play him ever week and get a 4m Bench fodder gk.

Was speaking to someone to a Dutch colleague and mentioned it, and he said a lot Dutch people felt FdB's version of Ajax's 4-3-3 was a very boring team; slow build up of the LvG kind. But we can't know, Parish said he didn't want someone who was using the club as a stepping stone so he could have to build on his philosophy at Palace, especially with quick players like Andros and Zaha at his disposal

That said, I might well end up with Tekkers in my GW1 team. It's basically him or Defoe (likely deal to Bournemouth permitting ofc)

Over the last week our hosts have been doing extensive updates to their service so we have had downtime and laggy periods but that should be over.

I'm obviously accessing the site on speedy networks and on quite powerful kit so it's difficult for me to see any issues so any feedback or details your or others can send will be very useful.

Yes, that's correct. It's based on fixture difficulty regardless of Home and Away.

Expand to 8 GWs and then click Southampton and Sort By Rotation, and I get Everton as their top-ranked pairing, which, looking at the breakdown of the fixtures, looks spot on.

Arsenal are ranked fifth for suitability with Southampton over 8 GW's.

You can create a custom home/away filter. Then when you sort by rotation it have the effect you want.

Custom filters are awesome. Can be very powerful.

i can see Manu being very strong this year, strong squad, more settled under Maureen towards end of season, and may actually do better without everything going through Ibra, definitely interested in defensive assets if funds allow

there's that, and i think without a single point of attack they'll be able to have a slightly more open style of attack, might give the likes of Pogba and Miki more involvement in goals/assists

I'd be gutted to lose Matic, hugely underrated, wins everything in the air, covers ground well and has a great left peg.

On a fantasy point of view, it would confirm Pogba in my team though

What are our price predictions for Salah? What price would make him a strong candidate for your GWK 1 team?

I am not considering him to start the season, regardless of price. There have been a few big name Serie A players who just haven't cut it making the transition to the EPL. I know this is his second go around with a new club/manager but the play styles are quite different within these two leagues. Look at Lamela and how he excelled in his last year at Roma. What he do the following year for Spurs? No goals in 9 games during the 2013/14 season and just 2 in 33 games the following year.

I strongly believe the Ox is going, if not to Liverpool, then elsewhere. Best season he has had for an age, if not ever so now is the time to get the big money move. Also think Giroud should move on, but only if Arsenal sign Lacazette/Mbappe.

At least the ones lacking the speed, acceleration and overall agility to keep up with the attacking and defending phases of the game if his team was to use a style that uses a counter attacking or otherwise quick style of play. Unfortunately I can't come up with an exampe right now.

I lost interest in Fantasy last season after about 2 weeks as I didn't get a lot of points. Is it worth renewing my FFS and Fantasy Football Fix memberships and getting into Fantasy again as I will have about 1 hour per day (a couple hours on weekends) to use for analyzing, building my team and reading articles. How many hours a day (or week) do the most successful players use to restructure their teams?

I don't think it's worth investing money in anything that you would possibly give up in two weeks, that being said if you're taking it seriously this year, an FFS membership goes a long way.

City and Chelsea have good squad depth. Liverpool and Spurs have good starting elevens. They should manage, and priorities will eventually turn to the PL as per the usual.

I'd actually be looking at arsenal as the most settled, with Chelsea initially one of Willian or Pedro I reckon will be a good pick with no Hazard.

United Liverpool City I'd be worried about for rotation in that order. Pep has too many options now!

The D is the biggest concern in my option, they got lucky with there starting back 5 staying fit last season, Zouma and Ake (who Conte only paid once in the PL) are their only cover options for next season as things stand. 3 more defensive minded signing required to cope with the increased fixture load IMO, Alex Sandro would be great start.

Which media outlets do you tend to trust / distrust for transfer news? We all know the tabloids are infamous for inventing rumours, but are any of the broadsheets / TV / local media any better?

I think The Telegraph, The Guardian and MEN are decent. I used to trust BBC and SkySports, but not anymore. The Sun is still the worst, by far.

The BBC tend to only really jump on once a deal's done - Which makes them more trustworthy but less useful

Daily Mail is worse than the Sun. Telegraph and Guardian team predictions are pants

Any news link you post here except the BBC or local foreign paper gets shot down.

Finding direct quotations are usually the best, Twitter is good for that. They are indisputable.
