The Numbers Game – Chelsea

Our series of pre-season team analysis articles now turns to focus on champions Chelsea.

To open, we compare the Blues’ displays against 2015/16 before assessing their main goal threat and creators over their triumphant campaign. We’ll also take a closer look at their performances in the 3-4-3 formation deployed from Gameweek 7 by head coach Antonio Conte, and offer a view on the prospects of key assets for the new season.

After ending their defence of the title with a disastrous tenth place finish in 2015/16, there was considerable room for improvement under the new management regime.

Handed the reins last summer, Conte benefitted from the Blues’ lack of European duties by returning them to the summit at the first attempt, with a tactical switch to a 3-4-3 fundamental to many Fantasy managers’ plans.

The Stamford Bridge outfit found the net on 85 occasions – second only to Spurs’ 86 and up markedly from 59 in the previous campaign.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Bayern have turned their attentions to Carrasco, leaving Man City as the only team in the race for Sanchez.

Amazing news as a City fan but completely kills the idea of Sane being nailed on in Fantasy

City have about 14 attacking players already, and all they do is buy more. It's a joke. Their defence is hot garbage.

Azpi in Luiz's spot. He's too good there to move him, and Moses gives more going forward than Azpi would. Luiz, VVD and Cahill competing for 2 slots makes more sense to me

        1. KingNidge
          • 8 Years

Agree that Azpi has been a revelation at CB and would be very unlikely that is changed... Luiz has also been outstanding and would be as nailed on as anyone in that side.. Cahill very much the weak link there imo

I think they'll happily rotate Luiz and Cahill out, both have been playing with niggles for a while, especially Luiz, so rotation would be no bad thing

On average, I agree. But Cahill taking the armband is also relevant, and he has some world class performances here and there. If it wasn't for him the FA Cup loss would have been a Germany-Brazil scoreline.

Although none of these are regarded as 'marquee' signings, these three players could really catapult Spurs to the title!

Chicarito (to help Kane out up top)
Alfie Mawson (to slot into a back three alongside Jan & Toby)
Demarai Gray (to provide speed in the attacking third)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (so to speak).

    Thoughts?

He came on as a sub right at the end of the game and didn't touch the ball once - the average position is plotted based on player activity so he doesn't register. Guess it defaults to 0,0 on the grid in those circumstances.

No. Less points. I only really play against myself (to better last seasons score) and two or three others in my family mini league...and that's about as serious as I get.

I find the one transfer a week lark too slow for my liking so I decided to embark on this way of playing. Suits me fine.

Here was my analysis on all the excessive hits I took this year, when you mentioned you took one every weekend. Interesting as it was considerably less points. http://the6thfloor.com/2017/05/21/premier-league-excessive-hits/

Mixture of 5 (City DGW. Hits to get players in, and hits to get them out again. 5 hits in 2 GWs), and 1 and 4 in conjunction with 3 with only 1FT. Hope that helps!

I just go for a hit as and when - the main reason shifted, but it tended to be a combination of 2 & 3 and me having exact cash to jump on the bandwagon giving me the extra push to take the plunge with the hit.

DK if hits should necessarily be avoided as a default, they've helped many a side change their fortunes. Guess it's when to hit which is the "skill" of it to some extent... which I didn't do too well on this season 🙁

Can team structure help to alieviate the need for hits ... the way funds are spread through the team or is it just luck how that pans out; saving transfers is the obvious solution but what else could one do?

      5. I don't take many hits but when I do it's usually to get a player (or players) that I see as essential either long term or for the upcoming period. Generally quality players rather than bandwagons (which I generally avoid).

for fun and restructuring team mainly, followed by price/bandwagon chasing - took lots of hits, terrible first half season, worst ever, but in last 10 gameweeks took between 1 and 2 hits per week, and still climbed from 1.8M OR to under 200k OR, just by making the CORRECT hits, and better captain choices

Think you get a fantasy assist for winning a direct free kick from which a goal is scored ?

I believe Assists are determined by the OPTA definition which is basically the 'classic' assist of who played the final pass to the player that scores.

Fantasy Assists include extra things like being fouled for a converted penalty/free kick, having a shot saved/hit the woodwork that gets followed up, etc.

Someone might be able to give a comprehensive explanation but that's the gist.

Fantasy assists are when people get really pissy because they don't own a player and decide to throw a temper tantrum on here because their rivals got points . Logic , reason and common sense go out the window as posters won't accept the decision fpl/opta made and advocate absurd rule changes which ultimately go nowhere .

Bit dated but Opta definitions are here...

      http://optasports.com/news-area/blog-optas-event-definitions.aspx

      Here's Opta's explanation...

From Summer 2013, Opta have started to collect a range of other assists used by fantasy football, but also available to clients to determine their own definition should they wish

      Heavily deflected pass
Shot on target saved, rebound scored
      Shot blocked rebound scored
      Shot hit woodwork rebound scored
      Penalty won
      Free kick won by foul
Free kick instigated by forced handball
      Instigating own goal through shot/pass

Swansea bid for Moreno. Id love it if he signed for another prem team. Would trump PVA as a fpl pick

He'd be attractive in an Alonso position in a 343 ... as we know a liability at fullback.
