Scout Report – Laurent Depoitre

Newly promoted Huddersfield Town completed their first summer signing with the addition of Porto striker Laurent Depoitre for an undisclosed club-record transfer fee, reportedly worth £3.5 million.

The 28-year-old Belgian international has signed a two-year deal with the Terriers, with the option of a further year’s extension.

Speaking to the club’s official website, head coach David Wagner revealed his delight at being able to add a player of Depoitre’s quality and experience to his squad:

“He is a proper striker; one who has played for a very good Belgium side, featured in elite European competition and who has won domestic titles. It is great news that we have had the opportunity to sign a player of his quality and now we will focus on getting him back to the top form he showed only a season ago. He scores goals and is a real worker too, so he will fit the ‘Terriers’ Identity’ very well.”

The History

Depoitre began his footballing journey in the Belgian lower leagues, initially linking up with RFC Tournai, scoring 12 goals in 31 appearances before signing for RRC Péruwelz in 2009.

He produced 16 goals in 43 outings over the next two seasons, leading to a move to Eendracht Aalst.

His progression continued in Aalst, netting 25 times in 69 matches. That prompted a transfer to top tier side KV Oostende in 2012 where he managed 19 goals and 10 assists in 62 league appearances over the next two seasons.

Depoitre was then bought by KAA Gent ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and it was there where his career really moved up a level.

He totalled 27 goals and 14 assists in 70 league outings, while he also made seven starts in the UEFA Champions League, scoring once, before joining Portuguese giants Porto in August 2016 for €6 million.

But Depoitre struggled to establish himself in the first-team in Portugal and only made seven league appearances, yielding just one goal.

He didn’t represent Belgian at youth level, but scored in his one and only appearance for the national team in a 4-1 victory over Andorra in October 2015.

The Prospects

Given Huddersfield managed to score just 56 goals in their 46 league matches last season – with 13 other sides in the Championship managing more, it was clear that Wagner needed to bolster his attacking options.

Elias Kachunga, who was played predominantly on the right flank, ended the campaign as the Terriers’ top scorer with 12 goals, with Nakhi Wells managing just 10 from 46 appearances.

Both Kachunga and Wells offer a threat primarily due to their pace, so the addition of physical target man Depoitre adds a new dimension to the Huddersfield attack.

Standing at 6ft 3 in tall, Depoitre has in the past been likened to compatriot Christian Benteke, while in terms of playing style, his signing mirrors the additions made by Swansea City and Middlesbrough with Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Negredo respectively ahead of last season.

Depoitre’s career is yet to hit the heights of those names, with his narrative so far comparable to that of Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, having progressed through the lower leagues before establishing himself as a striker at the top level.

Like Benteke and Llorente in particular, Depoitre’s major strength is his aerial ability, while he is an imposing and commanding target man, allowing him to hold off defenders and bring team-mates into play.

Depoitre appears to be an old-fashioned style English centre-forward in that respect, something the Belgian has himself alluded to:

“(The Head Coach) explained to me his way of playing and the mentality he wants. I think I can be useful to his way of playing. I’m a target man, a hard worker, I can keep the ball and I’m strong in the air. I fit the profile of English football… I fight for every ball; I don’t like to lose it, and if I do, I always fight to get it back.”

Wagner is a Jurgen Klopp disciple – although he prefers to describe his own sides high-pressing style as the “Terriers’ Identity” – so it will be interesting to see whether Depoitre has the stamina to seek out and win possession high up the pitch.

He will have to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, and that, along with his lack of goalscoring pedigree in a top European League, are two of the main questions he will need to address.

First-choice forwards from newly promoted sides usually find themselves priced between 5.5 and 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but Depoitre’s moderate goalscoring record perhaps means he should set us back no more than 6.0.

Looking at the Terriers’ opening schedule, there’s every chance that Fantasy managers could consider Huddersfield attacking assets as budget options when formulating Gameweek 1 squads.

Wagner’s men avoid all of last season’s top seven over the opening six Gameweeks (cpl, NEW, SOT, whu, LEI, bur), and look to have the ideal platform to get early points on the board. But with Wagner expected to add other new faces over the coming weeks, we will likely need to reserve judgement until the pre-season programme is underway.

Huddersfield are expected to sign Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy on a permanent basis after the Australian flourished on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium last season, and he, along with Kachunga, may provide a stronger option than Depoitre.

The burly Belgian should certainly have the physical attributes to make an impression in the Premier League, but it’s likely he will rely heavily on good service from the wide areas to produce points.

But having been tracked by Tottenham Hotspur and several other Premier League clubs in the past, it’s clear Depoitre has something about him. His addition looks to be a solid piece of business by the Terriers as they seek to address an alarming lack of firepower.

70m for Sandro.I dont understand this.Chelsea dont even need another left back. They already have the FPL legend that is Alonso. What will happen to Alonso if they sign Sandro?

I personally wouldn't spend that on a fullback but he's arguably the best left back in Europe. Alonso is a better FPL prospect than he is a defender. Sandro is in a different league to any full back in the PL.

Good example of a great FPL asset but not a great player. Had alot of freedom in that position but ultimately, a decent attacking minded FB who can actually defend, will always be better, come the big games. Sandro is perfect. I think Azpi could be great on the RWB? But that being said, he was great the back! Do you think Luiz is first to be dropped if/when conte signs a high profile CB? (Given Cahill is the captain)

No moses to drop out..Azpi to go RWB. Cahill - Luiz - New CB(VVD) as the three CB's.

Yeah Conte will have a lot more options defensively next season which is not good for FPL managers.Im expecting lots of rotation. We were lucky last season with chelsea not being in Europe.

                      Well I'm worried about this...
Considering ignoring Chelsea defence and taking an Ars, (probably Kola) Spurs, (Trippier if nailed, if not vertonghen if cheaper than Toby)
Cedric, Dawson and Valencia or Bailly if I somehow have the funds.
                      What you think?

Conte basically calls the left winger and right winger as 2 number 10s instead. Also, he wants the full backs to have great work rate and have an attacking mind.

Thing with Azpi playing RWB is, he is a brilliant defender, but not a brilliant attacker. A lot of times, he sits too deep on the RWB position and not where Conte wants him to be.

That's why we had been playing Moses there all season.

There are talks of Conte going with a 4-2-4 next season, and judging by Chelsea's stance in the market, it could be possible.

Bakayoko has been playing in a 4-2-4 all season at Monaco and the reason we might not be going for a RWB is, Azpi at RB is one of the best around and you won't be able to upgrade him easily.

Really interesting. I genuinely haven't heard about this 424.
How would they line up? (If you wouldn't mind giving me a hypothetical line up for next season?)
2 strikers? Or a 10 behind the striker? Or neither? Haha

It's all just speculation right now, but if we were to go with a 4-2-4, I'd expect something like this.

                        Courtois
                        Azpi - Luiz - Cahill/New CB - Sandro
                        Kante - Bakayoko
                        Pedro - Lukaku - Hazard/Batshuayi - Hazard/Willlian

Not sure about the attack cause we aren't linked with anyone atm apart from Lukaku and the fact that Costa will be leaving.

I still think we will start with 3-4-3, but 4-2-4 is still a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised to see him try it at least next season.

It looks a very strong team! Bakayoko and kante together is exciting.
Atm though, I'm only seriously looking at Pedro.
Maybe Lukaku if he moves though...he would kill it playing in that team surely?
                        What about fabregas then?

Lukaku should keep his scoring boots on. The guy is all about goals and play him in any team, he'll get you goals. FPL Gold that guy.

Fabregas is a tricky one. He seemed to have one a place in the team in the second half of the season in home games. Started 6 out of last 6 Home games in the league.

It's really hard to judge right now, there are a lot of rumours about players and until we actually sign the players, can't say much. Conte is known to find tailor-made fits for whatever squad he has at his disposal. Difficult to predict this genius.

Ok seasoned FPL pro's - your expertise please...

So, early doors, does the £83.0m template squad option with 2x £4.0m and 2x £4.5m bench fodder actually work, or does it leave you with too little backup?

    Experiences please.

Last season I started with the following in reserve : £5.0m GK, 2x £4.5m DEF, £5.0m MID - that £2.0m sure would have come in handy boosting the initial XI. I had 4 autosubs in first 10 GWs totalling 7pts so not like they provided great cover anyway(!)...

      • 7 Years

I'm certainly not a seasoned pro [in fpl at least] but I see my squad in terms of rotating options so autosub points aren't necessarily relevant.

      1. Legomane
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, it's fair point. My observation from my own was that while I rotated slightly with my 4.5 defenders, it was just as likely a strategy to backfire. By far the most significant 'rotation' was via the transfer market!

Yes I've considered that aspect...how will carefully devised rotation plans withstand the bandwagons ?! Ideally you would plan for some rotation cover to help prevent unnecessary hits though.

    2. Yellin' in my Ear

I certainly wouldn't want a £5m bench goalkeeper, if say ideally spend no more than £9m on the two keepers. £4.5m defenders I'd say are worth it over the £4m who is unlikely to play. Midfield, your choice, depends how well they're split between the two prices at the start, for example last season there were decent enough options at both, just need to find someone who plays evey week, doesn't need to perform like Capoue did at the start (albeit that helps even if, like me, you benched him for every goal)

      1. Legomane
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Yup, I started last year rotating Forster and Adrian before switching to Cech and Heaton (gw4) then finally seeing the light and running with Heaton Pickford (gw14) to the end. Plan to fast forward that move this year!

    3. AK ⭐

You need a squad of all 15 starters in GW1, because whatever team you end up picking up in GW1, you'd be feeling weird at the end of the season when you look back at your team that you created at the start.

There might be some wrong calls regarding a player's starting prospects or a team that you heavily backed looking at fixtures but didn't get a good start.

Also, the prices of the players are very volatile at the start. So if you pick a 4.0 defender or a keeper that many own, but he fails to start a game, his price is gonna fall and you might have to find 0.6 to get a starter in for your 3.9 defender now.

My personaly strategy is, I go for 2 keepers with max 9.5 invested in them, preferably I'll go for 9.0, but if there's a better combo out there that I think deseres an extra 0.5 outlay, I'll go for it.

With defenders, I usually don't start with a 4.0 defender in my squad at all, unless I am fairly certain that he will start.

Basically, you need to have each of your 15 players starting GW1, else you might be looking at an early WC.

Fantasy assists includes penalties and free kicks etc that OPTA(assists) don't.

Yes. They are IN ADDITION to Opta's designated assists. So OPTA award Eriksen 15, but he has 20 in FPL. OK?

Yeah it would however he would prob be priced at 5.0m and BOU concede goals for fun home and away.So unless I see some improvement in BOU def I wont be touching any BOU def assets.

Well at least Ake would become a viable player to have now unlike if he stayed at Chelsea.

5.0 after a handful of games would be cruel from FPL towers but very possible.

BOU wont keep cleanies too often but rb adam smith potential for attacking pts at 4.5

If he is 4.5m I would hop on him right away but doubt he will.
If Ake joins A.Smith becomes a rotation risk based on when Ake was playing with Bou last season.

Smith was either dropped or played in midfield to allow Ake a spot in the team.

Matic is a brilliant player but the rumoured fee's are the same for Fabinho who is 5 years younger.. can see why Jose would go there potentially though knowing Matic very well and with him being instrumental in his last title winning side.. dunno who or what to believe these days

One word - terrible. Last season in the one I'm in there were 5 occasions of 1st and 2nd GW scores facing each other. I can give you many other facts like this but i think it sums it up.

I swear that ninety-something percent of the time that a player is getting bigged-up pre-season as a potential bargain (Cedric @ 5.0, etc), they end up priced higher. FPL towers are surely lurking and keeping their beady eyes peeled for just this sort of thing when setting their prices. We're our own worst enemies at times, I swear 😀

Not sure. But my prediction is generally that if a lot of people are saying someone might be great value or "straight in my team" at 8.5 (or whatever) then he'll be slightly higher

9.0 would be my guess, but it depends on the pricing of Coutinho and Mané. That would be the same price as Mané last year. Salah is probably rated a bit higher individually than Mané last year, but doesn't come in as a clear first choice.

10 Mané, 9.5 Coutinho. A bit lower price for Coutinho because of injury history and potentially a deeper position than last year.

        9.0 Mané Coutinho

I struggle to see what Cedric has done in the past that warrants a 5.5 price tag. Cedric is interesting because we know that he should play every single game, whereas Stephens and Yoshida might have some newfound competition in the centre. He's also a very good player, but not a BPS magnet or an assist machine.

      1. Bojan Horsemack
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Haven't looked at his stats so might be a bad example. And I'm not usually keen on DEFs from clubs with managerial / defensive upheaval. But first choice attacking FB from a team with a good(+) defensive record over the last few seasons seems a bit cheap.

Salah might've been a better example. Or the DEF with the best potential at season's promoted clubs.

      2. Tommytour

I thought the same and wondered why everyone was touting him, but looked at his stats and he has 11 bonus points and same PPM as Stephens and Yoshida basically which was surprising.

Forster is the one not doing it for me with only 4 bonus last year and that came from a penalty save. The fixtures look so good however I want to double up.

A double or even triple up for Southampton for me, such good fixtures you'd imagine you could get good value and price rises.
Cedric will be 5, not really set things alight recently but plenty of potential.
Forster was woeful last season - I'd argue outside of Bravo he was the most underperforming keepers, but at least he is nailed.

FPL shot themsrlves in the foot last season with the likes of Mkhi - hopefully they will learn otherwise it's going to be slim pickings with half the starting front 6 in each top 6 team valued at 10m +

      1. Bojan Horsemack
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Hope you're right. But with the obvious goal threat the likes of Liverpool and Man C carry, I can't see them giving us many easy pickings.

A few relative bargains might come from Arsenal perhaps, if their line-up's vaguely consistent. Son will be an interesting one price-wise at Spurs... in and out of the team too much to be premium, but starting to get some consistency towards the end of the season. Wouldn't like to guess how much he'll be. United pricing will be interesting too.

Yes, it's the one thing I really don't like about FPL... sometimes they price a player much too high and then he's dead to the game. Sturridge last season, for example.

If we sign another CB, I'd think Cahill's place would be a little unsettled in the team, he won't be an automatic starter. On the left hand side of the trio of center backs, he is the weakest link. Need a left footed LCB to really get the most out of that position.

Terry was captain for first 6 games under Conte when we palyed 4 at the back. He got injured in the Swansea game, Cahill was the vice captain and got the armband when Terry wasn't available to be selected.

Let's just give Chelsea the premier league trophy now ...

Brazilian Alex Sandro, 26, has agreed to join Chelsea, with the Premier League champions closing in on a £61m deal with Juventus for the defender. (Corriere della Sera via Metro)

Sandro could be joined at Stamford Bridge by Southampton centre-half Virgil Van Dijk, 25, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, 24, and Monaco defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, 22, with Chelsea prepared to spend £240m this summer. (Daily Express)

Those 2 guys, plus Lukaku or keep Costa, plus VVD or Bonucci....incredible. Especially as I think Batshuayi could come good this season, he finished looking very promising. He might get more game time in the league this season ?

Italian Media is all over Sandro to Chelsea. Some guy named Agresti who works closely with Juventus also thinks he'll leave.

Bakayoko should be a done deal too, yes.

United spent record amounts in transfers and went backwards in the league compared to Van Gaal, a manager everyone hated.

Backwards in the league is fair comment and i did use the term below par to sum it up but at the end of the day as soon as that EL was won none of that mattered anymore.. CL objective was achieved one way or the other and a second trophy was in the bag.. We'll throw another couple of hundred million at it and go again.. no one in their right mind would deny we have to improve considerably but we will.. Guardiola spent more and won jack shit btw..

Why did everyone dislike Van Gaal? Low scoring games at home. Too many draws.

Did any of that improve last season... despite spending £150m plus? And yet there isn't even a murmur of discontent at Mourinho.

I think a lot of it has to do with how he manipulates the press and feeds them slightly outrageous lines that gets them to write about something else.

The dislike for LVG only started to circulate about half way through his second season and i personally was right behind him up until it became obvious we were not progressing at all as i was with Moyes too.. the style was a big issue with the fans and while we did draw far too many games at home this season it wasn't for lack of creating chances and attacking teams.. LVG's side just didn't create and had little or no urgency when looking to find a winning goal.. i'm not a great one for stats but i would wager strongly chances created were up considerably under Jose and if we had been more clinical a large number of draws would have been wins but that's the way the cookie crumbles.. we also were dumped out of the CL group stages in LVG 2nd season and failed to qualify for it again.. Jose has us back in it..

Hit massively by injuries towards the end of the season, don't forget. Personally, I don't think Mou's style of football suits Man Utd at all, but they knew that before they signed him on. And may United Fans are focusing a bit too much on getting CL off the back of winning the EL cup. Had they lost the final, their season would have been viewed as a massive failure, kudos to Mourinho for having the balls to place all his eggs in that one basket and going for it.
