Scout Report – Laurent Depoitre

Newly promoted Huddersfield Town completed their first summer signing with the addition of Porto striker Laurent Depoitre for an undisclosed club-record transfer fee, reportedly worth £3.5 million.

The 28-year-old Belgian international has signed a two-year deal with the Terriers, with the option of a further year’s extension.

Speaking to the club’s official website, head coach David Wagner revealed his delight at being able to add a player of Depoitre’s quality and experience to his squad:

“He is a proper striker; one who has played for a very good Belgium side, featured in elite European competition and who has won domestic titles. It is great news that we have had the opportunity to sign a player of his quality and now we will focus on getting him back to the top form he showed only a season ago. He scores goals and is a real worker too, so he will fit the ‘Terriers’ Identity’ very well.”

The History

Depoitre began his footballing journey in the Belgian lower leagues, initially linking up with RFC Tournai, scoring 12 goals in 31 appearances before signing for RRC Péruwelz in 2009.

He produced 16 goals in 43 outings over the next two seasons, leading to a move to Eendracht Aalst.

His progression continued in Aalst, netting 25 times in 69 matches. That prompted a transfer to top tier side KV Oostende in 2012 where he managed 19 goals and 10 assists in 62 league appearances over the next two seasons.

Depoitre was then bought by KAA Gent ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and it was there where his career really moved up a level.

He totalled 27 goals and 14 assists in 70 league outings, while he also made seven starts in the UEFA Champions League, scoring once, before joining Portuguese giants Porto in August 2016 for €6 million.

But Depoitre struggled to establish himself in the first-team in Portugal and only made seven league appearances, yielding just one goal.

He didn’t represent Belgian at youth level, but scored in his one and only appearance for the national team in a 4-1 victory over Andorra in October 2015.

The Prospects

Given Huddersfield managed to score just 56 goals in their 46 league matches last season – with 13 other sides in the Championship managing more, it was clear that Wagner needed to bolster his attacking options.

Elias Kachunga, who was played predominantly on the right flank, ended the campaign as the Terriers’ top scorer with 12 goals, with Nakhi Wells managing just 10 from 46 appearances.

Both Kachunga and Wells offer a threat primarily due to their pace, so the addition of physical target man Depoitre adds a new dimension to the Huddersfield attack.

Standing at 6ft 3 in tall, Depoitre has in the past been likened to compatriot Christian Benteke, while in terms of playing style, his signing mirrors the additions made by Swansea City and Middlesbrough with Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Negredo respectively ahead of last season.

Depoitre’s career is yet to hit the heights of those names, with his narrative so far comparable to that of Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, having progressed through the lower leagues before establishing himself as a striker at the top level.

Like Benteke and Llorente in particular, Depoitre’s major strength is his aerial ability, while he is an imposing and commanding target man, allowing him to hold off defenders and bring team-mates into play.

Depoitre appears to be an old-fashioned style English centre-forward in that respect, something the Belgian has himself alluded to:

“(The Head Coach) explained to me his way of playing and the mentality he wants. I think I can be useful to his way of playing. I’m a target man, a hard worker, I can keep the ball and I’m strong in the air. I fit the profile of English football… I fight for every ball; I don’t like to lose it, and if I do, I always fight to get it back.”

Wagner is a Jurgen Klopp disciple – although he prefers to describe his own sides high-pressing style as the “Terriers’ Identity” – so it will be interesting to see whether Depoitre has the stamina to seek out and win possession high up the pitch.

He will have to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, and that, along with his lack of goalscoring pedigree in a top European League, are two of the main questions he will need to address.

First-choice forwards from newly promoted sides usually find themselves priced between 5.5 and 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but Depoitre’s moderate goalscoring record perhaps means he should set us back no more than 6.0.

Looking at the Terriers’ opening schedule, there’s every chance that Fantasy managers could consider Huddersfield attacking assets as budget options when formulating Gameweek 1 squads.

Wagner’s men avoid all of last season’s top seven over the opening six Gameweeks (cpl, NEW, SOT, whu, LEI, bur), and look to have the ideal platform to get early points on the board. But with Wagner expected to add other new faces over the coming weeks, we will likely need to reserve judgement until the pre-season programme is underway.

Huddersfield are expected to sign Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy on a permanent basis after the Australian flourished on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium last season, and he, along with Kachunga, may provide a stronger option than Depoitre.

The burly Belgian should certainly have the physical attributes to make an impression in the Premier League, but it’s likely he will rely heavily on good service from the wide areas to produce points.

But having been tracked by Tottenham Hotspur and several other Premier League clubs in the past, it’s clear Depoitre has something about him. His addition looks to be a solid piece of business by the Terriers as they seek to address an alarming lack of firepower.

With Nainggolan potentially moving to united, would that help pogba push forward aswell, or are we holding out for Matic to make that happen?

Reckon Matic would be better for Pogba. Radja quite likes to have the ball in his feet and is no stranger to shooting from outside of the box. Both would probably strengthen his appeal, but for me, Matić quite more than Nainggolan.

RMTs before the game opens and before prices are released.
DZ stripped of all it's finest members.
Mods doing their best to breathe life into a dying community, with Marky mark firing in comments to breathe life back into a once vibrant forum.
FFS, I love you. But you have lost your soul.
The articles, the hot topics, the members articles, the betting ads, the lack of craic due to heavy handed modding over the last couple of years are sad to see as a 7 year contributor.
All the worthwhile posters have gone elsewhere.
I have a sneaking feeling that the FFS hierarchy don't really care about how the forum aspect of the site pans out and are concentrating on commercial gains, .. that's cool, I'd do the same in the same position..

Happy summer everyone and best of luck next season 🙂

      I'm sure Mark will respond.

But here's my two-penneth. Each year the comments are up and we are attracting new people to the community. Visitors are up too.

There are adverts because the costs of running a popular website are immense.

And in terms of ‘heavy handed modding’ we make no apologies for taking action against bullying, racism and sexism. While the likes of Twitter and Youtube are full of such stuff we take action. But luckily it is rare these days.

Do we care? Of course – that is why so much time and money is invested in making this site and its community so strong.

The advice on here by the community, the articles and Members bells and whistles is second to none and RMTs are a vital part of it. People giving and receiving vital advice.

The comments are up, however, quantity ≠ quality. While its brilliant for the site's coffers for traffic and revenue the downside is that the community personal side of things goes out of the window.

It's the price of success. What the site does very well is provide a nice easy quick question and answer style forum. The community aspect has long gone.

But what EpicFail says is true Jonty. The site may have become a lot popular but the amount of useless comments is also high. I'm not pointing out at anyone specific. It may include me also. But during the season there are so many questions which are repetitive. People don't care to read the before posting the questions.
And the modding is too heavy sometimes. The mods delete posts involving some normal banter. Last season me, Jafooli, Adam West and EpicFail were having a discussion on bans and it was deleted. That's too bitter modding imo. There's only so much you can control a person. I am a very big supporter of Ffs but it's not the same as it was when I was a lurker or when I read the old posts.
        NO offence intended.

It's not about stopping bullying and what not, everyone welcomes that. It is the personal preference of some mods over others and their lust for power.

From a numbers perspective the site is run perfectly, the more visitors the more potential clicks on the gambling affiliate links.

            Their "lust for power" 😆
That's extreme, they're just trying to do their job 😀

I completely agree with Epic though. It's just a side effect of being successful. For those that want the FFS community of old there are forums out there to facilitate this particular side.

But the information and tools available here on FFS will always be some of the best out there, and seem to be improving with every year.

Thanks for the reply Jonty. Obviously I am aware of the commercial need to run adverts to help fund the site. My main issue with the betting ads is that there are minors that use FFS, surely the vetoing of swear words by the mods echoed this? If not, why not just have a box to tick indicating that you are over 18 when registering on FFS. Then let us say naughty words like poo and wee to our hearts content.

"Taking action against racism". Yeah you did a really fine job on that one by giving a certain Macedonian poster a rap on the knuckles when he referred to Sadie Mane as a useless ----- monkey.
Meanwhile, I had my posting rights temporarily removed , this was after I flagged his post, assuming he would be banned from the site permanently- which he wasn't, for some strange reason only known to yourself.

And yes, I do accept that my rant against the modding at the time was angry and foul mouthed. But I really was that annoyed at the time. And still am.

I am delighted that FFS has gone from strength to strength and I will continue with my membership. Even though stats are available elsewhere, the simplicity of the format specifically geared for playing FPL makes the 12.50 a bargain.

I've edited the insult out of your comment rather than moderate because I'd like to leave your comment to respond.

Our server costs are currently about double our ad revenue month to month.

We have a very big server behind the members' area and two very big DB's, we also have 5 x test servers, about 8-10 web servers which increase further depending on load, two load balancers and three caching servers. Plus we have separate hosting for images with Amazon cloud.

Meanwhile, we run a leaderboard and a sidebar mpu and give 50% of all ad revenue to our agency.

So the costs are big compared to the ads and Jonty wasn't "spinning" or "blowing out of his arse" and nor am I.

How much do you think servers of this magnitude cost?

You can hardly expect them to take out massive loans every year just because you can't handle a silent ad, tucked away in the corner?

Hi Rhinos - if you think a leaderboard ad and a couple of sidebar slots is "bombarding" then I can only think your experience of football news sites on the net is limited - don't get me wrong, that's a good thing for you. But in today's clickbait culture, I believe FFS are far from bombarding folk with ads.

      Hi RCA.

Okay - Comment counts have been declining, folk are using other methods to talk about Fantasy Football. That was really inevitable, though. Social media is now huge and every day a new Twitter account crops up offering comment and advice for FPL. That will go on. We now share the Fantasy Football conversation with lots of other sources.

Let's face it, the volume of comments on this site in past seasons has been bordering on ridiculous, so a decline in the face of social media's growth was on the cards.

However, our visitor counts were up considerably last season and, for the new season, another set of new visitors will arrive and some will post.

So there is a churn of Fantasy Football players, just like any community. We can't be arrogant enough to think that all the wise heads, great posters and worthy opinion came to FFS and have been and gone. I can't stop others claiming that but I'm not going to dwell on it. I'd love to see some folk come back and post here, you included, but I have to keep moving forward because folk move on, they always have and I have to accept it.

I certainly do care about improving the community aspect of the site - it's crucial. Only recently I was looking at creating a new user guide to bring more people into the community. We're not good enough in that area and we need to improve and we will.

We have a challenge to improve things but we're now stronger than before. We have more resources in all areas and we will make plans to make things better.

As for the ads and betting - all I say on that is, take a look at other commercial football sites our size - check out the pop-up ads, the full-screen video takeovers and ask yourself if you really believe that we've prioritised that side of things to the detriment of the visitor.

Really good Mark. A small suggestion. I think it would be better to have a seperate thread for the RMTs like we have for the Eliteserien and other games. The site will look less boring in that case.
As for the mods, I don't agree with them everytime but it's not a big concern.

All people need to do is add a word like Repost.

I don't know if it would work on here, but on some other forums I've used in the past, when you are about to post a comment, it uses your post as a search, it then brings up topics that contain the key words in what you are about the post and asks if you wish to post anyway or you can click on the link to one of the other similar posts.

We always do a series of RMT articles over the summer and hopefully will do so again. One of us usually posts our RMT thoughts to start the discussion and bring in certain themes - eg - best budget defenders, 3-5-2 v 3-4-3.

RMTs are welcome anywhere but that does help move lot into one place - its also handy looking back over a week at the RMTs - can be really useful.

I'm a little baffled by your reply, Mark. You seem to suggest comments are declining, but have also never been higher.

However, I also wonder if the mixed picture highlights the issue? During the season comments were so crazily busy at times that the pages flew by so fast no one had time to respond, driving some of the old regulars elsewhere. Now, most of the less committed masses have disappeared for the summer and comments have slowed to a crawl because a lot of the old regulars have decamped to Twitter or wherever instead.

          Comments down, visitors up.

I might be completely wrong on this, but perhaps the comments are down 'because' the visitors are up. During the season the pages fly by and big conversations rarely happen. As soon as anything worth discussing is posted, it's on to the next page and forgotten about almost instantly.

Thanks for the reply Mark. You always come across as reasonable and well balanced guy and I admire you for it.

I'm glad you have acknowledged that the community aspect of your site needs attention and that you are working behind the scenes to address it.

        Cheers and all the best.

Thanks RCA - I try to be reasonable and I appreciate your comments are made with good intentions, though sometimes I see "agitation" from others which I do have to question.

We will look at HomeCrowd and community tools again once the August crush is over - I can't risk changes at this time but, once the season stats and traffic levels settle, we will be taking a look at some ideas.

Mark, what do you think of having key words attached to meaningful posts, so as to make finding the information easier, especially during the busy season. Keywords would be added by mods, while they're reading content, nothing too complicated: #GKrotation #Arsenal #DGW. Then one could search through this week's posts mentionning key themes. A lot of very good comments are sadly missed.

Yes that's something I wanted to do years ago with tagging RMTs and then allowing users to filter them out.

I will resurrect it...though the big issue with homeCrowd is to ensure the load remains light - adding complexity is obviously an issue. However Ed and Mat can look at this I'm sure.

This may be interesting information for those looking to invest in Newcastle players.

Since the inception of the English Premier League, 20 teams have been immediately promoted, or "bounced back", in the season following their relegation from the EPL.
The average finishing position in the season following their bounce back is 14th. (8 were relegated, 5 teams finished 9th, 1 team finished 3rd!)
No team who bounced back as champions has been relegated from the EPL the following season since 1998/99.
The last 3 teams to suffer immediate relegation following a bounce back (QPR, Norwich and Hull) all gained their bounce back via the play-offs.

Good points. Whilst I'm tipping Brighton and Huddersfield to fall short, I think Newcastle will do considerably better than Middlesbrough and survive the season - at least so long at Benitez sticks around.

However, from a FPL perspective I don't see them keeping many clean sheets or scoring too many. Certainly for my first GW1 squad I don't see any names that I'd add to my watchlist.

At least when one or two start to emerge and a bandwagon begins to form, it'll be easy enough to get whoever in on a single transfer.

Thanks for the reply. I was considering a Huddersfield defender from GW1, but after considering the difference in quality of the 2 teams, I am considering a 4.5 defender from Newcastle instead. Both teams have good fixtures early.

I would have thought that with the PL and Champers League football, Liverpool MUST sign a top specialist left full-back. Now I don't dig into all the transfer gossip, but I'm surprised to hear so little about it. Is there any talk?

So Leipzig want £65m-70m for Naby Keita. Has a release clause that's a bit lower than that for next summer but he'd probably be offered a new contract with a higher release clause if he stays. Very steep price but his price-tag is going one way only. Alongside Thiago, he was the best midfielder in the Bundesliga. I don't think there's a midfielder in the PL better than him to be honest. Can see him playing for Bayern soon enough 🙁

Stupid summer rumours I usually ignore but I gotta ask you this question lads: would you swap Sánchez for Agüero?

If he won't sign new deal it's a bargain rather than free next season. City prob sign auyemayan then. So it's a fantasy win too

Yes. Aguero is the best striker in the league for me. But he wouldn't make that move. Too good not to be in CL.

It must be the daftest rumour made up today. why on Earth would Aguero take such a step down?

If Guardiola makes it clear that he isn't a guaranteed starter, Aguero could quite easily want a move.

PSG, Atleti (in January), Juventus, Real, Chelsea, Bayern would all be ahead in the queue imo.

Sanchez is great don't get me wrong, I prefer Aguero hands down. Consistently world class. Sanchez is very capable of blowing cold for stretches in the season.

Delivers so much more for the team than Aguero. Aguero is fast and can finish, but his pssing range is nowhere near the quality of Sanchez's

Would still prefer Sanchez with Lacazette as striker. Aguero and Lacazette on the wing is less tempting.

I am assuming that Lemar to Arsenal would be the clubs ambition if Sanchez is truly pushing a move away from the club. However, I am finding it harder to see any real substance in the rumours that Sanchez is looking to move. It sounds more like the agent is trying to force the agenda, move=big fee.

Makes sense for both in my opinion, especially if it's a straight swap, no money involved.
Pep gets a front 3 of Sané/Silva, Jesus, Sanchez
And Wenger finally gets a striker with 20+ league goals in him.

Well it'd a big question. We'll have to wait and observe the pre-seasons carefully. Maybe he'll start the season as first choice wing-back and get edged out as Sandro gels with the squad.

We've spoken about Pellegrino but what does everyone make of De Boer at Palace?

How will their style of play change and what are the prospects of Benteke, Zaha, Dann etc looking like for the season ahead?

I think both are excellent managers and will enhance the PL, but given that both managers could have gone to either club, I do think Southampton made the best choice.

I'm waiting to read up on De Boer's favoured tactics, but as an ex-defender (as is Pellegrino) I expect Palace to tighten up at the back, maybe making Hennessey a possible FPL purchase.

He came through Ajax, so I would expect more possession based football and intense pressing. Probably a 4-3-3 formation and fewer long balls.

Anyone thinking that hideously high prices would actually help most of the people on this site? Would mean research would be well rewarded, and would avoid the casuals just banging a load of big hitters in their teams and logging off,

Wouldn't want them over priced for the sake of it but Aguero and Kane for example should be 13 a piece without question

Yes, I hope so. What I don't like is the concept of 'template teams' that too many jump on. I think this season it might be the case that you can only afford 3 premium players without fatally unbalancing your squad, so we will have to put a lot more thought into our teams, and I think teams will look a lot more diverse.

Is anyone else not sure on Fraser Forster? On top of the fact that he's actually a fairly ropey keeper, he doesn't actually make many saves or get many bonuses? Better off going with just Cedric or double def instead?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

He's on my shortlist as I expect the Saints to be pretty tight at the back. However, if VVD goes and isn't replaced, there could be bargains to be had in Yoshi and Stephens if they're priced the same as Forster. I've got Cedric inked in but I'm worried Juve will nick him.

This. I'm earmarking him as a possible player for my team. I expect Pellegrino to tighten up at the back.

I've also just noticed that it sounds like the Matic to Man Utd deal unfortunately looks like it is going to happen. Anyone have any idea what sort of fee that would command? Surely if Chelsea bought him for £21m they wouldn't be letting him go for less that £30m!?

Taking his age also into consideration, I think 25-30m would be a fair deal in the present market.

Don't think Matic will be officially signed before mid July, if at all. Presume United are thrashing out a deal for him as a back up to better options. Agreeing the deal now means he can join straight away if/when other targets fall through.

Also, expect Perisic news to pick up greatly this week and early next week.
