The Numbers Game – Crystal Palace

Our series of pre-season members’ articles continues with a look at Crystal Palace.

We kick off our analysis by assessing their team displays against the 2015/16 campaign, before scanning their primary goal threats and creators.

We’ll also take time to compare their displays under both Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce, with one eye on what the now managerless Eagles can offer in 2017/18.

After battling to beat the drop for most of the season, the Palace ended the last campaign in fourteenth position on 41 points – more or less identical to 2015/16, where they ended in fifteenth spot with 42 points.

In terms of a cutting edge, there was a definite improvement – a total of 39 goals in 2015/16 was better than just two other teams, but this jumped to 50 last time out, the ninth most impressive scoring record in the top-flight.

But when assessing the two seasons, there was little difference in the underlying numbers.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Will Jonty have his beloved Jason Puncheon in his team this season?

I think he has to. It's his "thing" now.

Puncheon is as quintessentially Jonty now as goals imminent.

If Ake goes to Bournemouth, what do we reckon his price will be?

If 4.5 he will be straight in my team. He was absolute gold during that spell when he was a regular last season.

If only Bournemouth were tighter at the back. I think he will be 5.0, considering his output in the 7-8 gameweeks before going back to Chelsea

I'd jump on him at 4.5. I did last season - got one game out of him and he was back to Chelsea. I already had 3 Chelsea players but i kept him and made no transfers for 3 weeks because I was hoping he'd break into the first team. Disastrous tactic, really set me back. Nevertheless, assuming he'd be straight into the cherries first team I'd take him back providing he's not more expensive than Begovic.

Hopefully 4.5 but maybe 5. Given that over the season he only finished on 6 points and ended up at 3.9 I'm hopeful this may help keep his price down.

With De Boer set to take the helm at Palace things are looking up for the London side.

Who is tempted by their players next season? Is Benteke a viable option, even if he was frustrating to own last season? And what of their defence – can De Boer’s countryman Van Aanholt prosper under new management?

Super boring 'wait and see' approach for me. de Boer had a good record at Ajax but didn't even last 3 months before being sacked at Inter, basically I don't know what to expect so unless there's an obvious bargain I'll just watch with interest for now.

their opening fixtures, including benteke's great record against liverpool, mean they look a solid value bet early doors.

it's easy to spend time on a wild goose chase for value up front but at 7-7.5 tekkers is as close to a sure bet as there is in this game.

    8. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years

Benteke's number's are impressive and hold a ton of potential. If priced around 7.5m he could be one the better value forwards imo. High on my watchlist, along with Defoe.

      Zaha also looks promising.

He said he wants to play like Barcelona. Based on this, I would say they won't have a great defence, Cabaye should play and the style of play won't suit Benteke, similar to how he got on at Liverpool.

I will be certainly tempted by Palace assets in the coming season.
Big Sam had shored them up come the end of last season and i reckon De Boer will build on his good work.

Their assets should be well priced given their dismal performance last season so we should have some bargains at palace provided they perform better.

You always have to be cautious with a new manager because you never really know just how exactly they will set up so i will be giving Palace extra close scrutiny looking for the best route for investment.

This.I have my eye on Benteke (7.5m) , Zaha (6.5m) and PVA (5m) for GW1. Will get Zaha if go with 3-5-2 and will get Tekkers if go with 3-4-3 formation.

Similar to my initial thoughts. My only worry is it may cause a few selection headaches given they all have good starting fixtures. Tempted to add Mawson into the mix and may consider a different Southampton defender to Cedric.

Not going near any Palace players for the first few weeks of the season. No one players that stands out as consistent source of points.

He's not a 'lump it up to the big man' manager, so I'm less inclined to go for Tekkers. I'll look more closely at defence - PVA would be good if he's 5.0 but will probably be 5.5. Hennessey might be in the frame at 4.5.

    Courtois
    Alderweireld - Kompany - Vertonghen
    Nainggolan - Dembele
    Hazard - KdB - Chadli
    Lukaku - Benteke

    Mignolet - Vermaelen - Boyata - Fellaini - Carrasco - Batshuayi - Origi - Mertens

Pretty good for a population of 11m. Should be higher than 7th FIFA ranking? Although Martinez as manager won't help.

Interesting stuff - thanks as always! Those chance creation numbers are definitely tempting, though I suspect a little of that may be related to how often Ingolstadt were throwing men forward to chase games. I can't imagine I'll be drafting in Groß for week 1, but he's probably worth keeping an eye on as a potential Allen-esque enabler later on.

Not an expert on the player, but here's my take anyway. He seems a bit loose with the ball overall at times (kind of his dribbling style), but his athleticism and quickness seem second to none and he appears to easily glide by opposing players quite often. Almost as if he is on another level in terms of quickness. If he makes a bad pass here and there or loses the ball in possession, he'll probably have the physical tools needed to get it back quickly. Brings great presence in the box on the opposition end for free kicks and what not. Looks a pretty amazing signing to me, especially when you add on the fact he's only 22.

Think the Harry Kane to Man Utd gossip might even eclipse the Ronaldo stuff in terms of sheer ludicrousness.
There's been some great ones this window though:

Utd - Kane, Ronaldo, Bale, Morata
City - Sanchez swap for Aguero
    Arsenal - Mbappe, Martial
    Liverpool - Mbappe, Keita
    Chelsea - Lewandowski, Bonucci
    Tottenham - Isco

If any of those happen I'll be absolutely amazed.

I'm not too keen on Sanchez at City, tbh. His main appeal at Arsenal is that he hogs the ball and the goals (as long as Giroud doesn't start or Walcott play upfront).

Aguero at Arsenal, on the other hand, I would love.

With te Champers Leagues games they didn't have last year, I'd've thought hey'd want to keep Matic along with Kante and Bakayoko - and still nurture a kid or two in the PL.

Hey FPL dreams (and others if you're interested)

I saw your post on the previous article regarding classical music. Here's something that you might like Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmina_Burana gives an explanation of the piece. Since I don't do youtube you have to find the link to the music yourself, it is about an hour and 15 mins long.

You will recognize some of the songs since they are in a lot of films and advertisements.

    Hope you like it

Not sure if this has been discussed on here already but heard that FPL will be running the option of a draft style game next year and a new chip which would act as a temporary one week wild card reverting back to original squad the week after presumably to help with GW28 situations. Came from a credible source

    Here's a thought.
How about throwing an all star GW1 dream team, aiming for the highest possible score.
Followed by as many transfers as needed that will hopefully be covered by the potentially high score.
It would be like a GW2 wild card in light of what happened in previous round but with saving of the original one and with the least possible damage.

Been there, done that, utter waste of a WC.
Unless you are hell bent on WC gw2/3 for maxing TV anyway.

How do you put together an 'all star dream team team' is the problem, especially the all star bit. So many results come out upside down to previous season, and so many players change form or have tactics changed there's not actually decent data to base decisions on.

A PL newcomer straight in at 7.0? Nah, 6.0 imo. Maybe 6.5 but I don't see it.

I think he will end up at 6.5, but individually he deserves a 7.0 tag. Maybe even 7.5 if FPL decides to up the prices of premium defenders a bit, which I think they should.

    4. Camp No No
      • 10 Years

No. 6.5 maybe, but not the top price for his position.

Wing back is an exhausting role so I would expect rotation between the two players, Spurs-esque. Alonso only got so many minutes last season because Conte had so few options there. He wasn't expecting to play that formation at the start of the season, so was unprepared.

If FPL agree they may give them both ~6.5m! 🙂

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

And they will both be waste of money in FPL, because of rotation.

    Team balance?
Interested to see what the general consensus on team balance is, ie spread funds evenly throughout the team, defence, mids, and attack, or go heavy in mid/attack and hope for good picks in a cheap defence? - also what's the feeling on going without a couple of the mega money players (eg sanchez/aguero/kane) to have a really solid overall squad? Would having for example Jesus and Pedro instead and spending that extra 7-8 m on beefing up the rest of the team pay dividends?
I've often gone with ultra cheap defence in the past, only bulking it up when tv goes up later in season, and normally go with the couple of big hitters i feel are 'essential' plus the best value picks eg the likes of siggy

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

I've a hunch we're going to have to play it different this season. There will be more premium-priced strikers and midfielders, forcing us to think very carefully. No one will be nailed on, and we'll only be able to afford 3 premiums without savagely unbalancing our squads. I may end up with one premium striker and invest more in defence.

      1. SAY MY NAME
        • 6 Years

very true, i've seriously been considering a 4-5-1 formation, just to get better value across the team, if i go with 3 premium forwards/mids the rest of the team will be extremely average low cost players and i'll be reliant on those 3 big players performing every week - i think 1 or 2 premium picks, and then see what value players eg josh king type players reveal themselves - really was hoping to avoid too may hits this year, so wanted to get a fairly settled team with reasonable potential from the start, and just upgrade later in season when i get a bit more tv - just need to choose the best big hitter at the start, always hard to know

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, another factor is that the squads of the clubs in the Champs League are starting to look a bit bloated offensively, which I suspect means a lot of rotation and rest for some of the most expensive assets. I'd be bulking my squad out with assets from the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Southampton.

        2. 6thGoal
          • 6 Years

Depending on prices the week of July 10, I do believe a 4-5-1 would be a possibility. With risk of rotation at some clubs and a lack of a true forward at others, it would budget could be better spent elsewhere in a squad....like midfield.
