Great Expectations – Manuel Lanzini

Manuel Lanzini followed up an encouraging first season with West Ham United by emerging from the shadow of Dimitri Payet during the second half of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Argentine international totalled six goals and three assists in 2015/16, tallying 100 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but was limited to just three goals during the first half of last season before the departure of Payet in January.

He produced a further five goals and three assists to end with 133 points, finishing level with fellow midfielder Robert Snodgrass as the Hammers’ top points scorer in FPL.

Now established as the main playmaker in Slaven Bilic’s side, Lanzini looks primed to kick on once again this season and become increasingly relevant as a Fantasy asset.

  • After starting last season priced at 6.5 in FPL, Lanzini’s 133 points may hand him a price hike to 7.0 or, at most, 7.5. With Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Everton’s Ross Barkley likely to be more expensive than the Argentine, he could easily emerge as one of the leading mid-price options.
  • The absence of Payet is key to how we view Lanzini. The 24-year-old fired in 43 shots following the Frenchman’s departure from Gameweek 21 onwards, ranking him joint-seventh among FPL midfielders along with Tottenham Hotspur duo Dele Alli and Son Heung-min. He also placed eighth for key passes (36) over that period, with only two midfielders – Spurs’ Christian Eriksen and Barkley – surpassing him on both counts.
  • Those impressive numbers are reflected in a significant increase in Lanzini’s goal involvement from 2015/16 to last season. That shot up from 17.8% in his debut season to 30.3%, highlighting his growing influence for the Hammers.
  • Set-piece duties are now a key factor behind Lanzini’s appeal. He took just three free-kicks and three corners between Gameweeks 1 and 20 while Payet was still at the club. But from Gameweek 21 onwards, he was charged with 14 free-kicks and 41 corners – considerably more than any other team-mate. While Robert Snodgrass, Mark Noble and, to a lesser extent, Michail Antonio provide competition for duties, Lanzini should continue to be the main man. Penalties could also be a factor next season. Noble remains the Hammers’ designated taker, but his starting role came under question as he continued to suffer from a “long-standing” abdominal problem. Lanzini stepped up in Noble’s absence to convert two spot-kicks.
  • During the second half of the season, Lanzini illustrated his ability to produce explosive returns. He registered nine FPL points or more just once up to Gameweek 20, but managed the feat six times from Gameweek 21 onwards. That saw his points per match average jump from 3 up to Gameweek 20 to 4.55 between Gameweeks 21 and 38, with that upturn perhaps an indication of what’s to come this season should Bilic hand him more responsibility.
  • While rotation is set to be a real concern regarding many of the leading midfielders in FPL, Lanzini looks unlikely to suffer from the same issue. The Hammers aren’t involved in any European football, while Bilic doesn’t have a vast array of options available to him. Lanzini completed 90 minutes in each of the last 14 matches and appears to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
  • While West Ham start the season with three away matches (mun, sot, new), their schedule over the first 10 Gameweeks is rated as the second most favourable according to our Fixture Ticker. They only face two of last season’s top 10 over that period and have plum home fixtures against Huddersfield Town, Swansea and Brighton and Hove Albion. The fixture list certainly suggests that investment in Lanzini could pay off, with the midfielder likely to be a differential for early adopters.

Mmmm. Would that be Steve Parish who encouraged attacking football for Pardew and then sacked him for doing just that...

I think it was more of pardew's fault Wakey. He forgot that he wasn't managing Barcelona and started playing more expansive style all of a sudden without working properly on the defence. It was imminent IMO.

I remember reading a couple of articles where the agreement was they would go out and attack...or try to...and that was the ethos at the time. I have no problem with that at all but if a club wants to try and "draw" their way to survival then sell the likes of Bolasie and Zaha and spend big on defenders. Seemed to me like Pardew was the fall guy for what everybody at the club had agreed to do...

            1. Dreams
              • 7 Years

There were enough chances for him. The defence was a long standing problem. They only sold Bolasie but also got him a very good striker like Benteke. Matches like the Swansea one were ridiculous. Managing a club like that is tricky. Both long term planning and short term needs are to be fulfilled. Pardew couldn't ensure the short term success of survival.
And yes what you say is correct. But the manager is always the first guy to get the boot. Such is life.

    Great article on Lanzini.
I've been wondering for a while now who is most nailed/best pick out of the WH mids...
    Lanzini, Antonio, Ayew or Snods.
I was originally thinking Antonio (previous record) or Ayew (OOP potential)
    Is it infact, Lanzini then?

Going to wait and see how deBoer approaches the season. If he's coming with ball control and defensive style of play, then don't expect all Tekkers, all the time, as they work the ball into him. Unless he's priced nicely, I will pass to start the year and look elsewhere, but it will depend on how I set my team up. We will see the week of July 10.

You're the boss...what do you do?

I have agreed to carry on managing my U16's league winning team into junior football (16-18 years old). As we will be one of the youngest teams we will probably get thumped. I could start scouting for extra (older players) to get results for the club or stick with the original squad for loyalty and because it's morally the right thing to do.

It's easy managing a club from the outside but the reality is how do you make decisions like splitting up friends just to get better results for the club and how do you tell a player who has played in the same team with his mates for ten years that "we've found someone else...you're dumped"...

    Any thoughts?....

Scout and get the players you think will improve the squad and then phase the players you don't think cut it out. You don't have to replace them straight away. They can still be squad players. As they age over the season, they may get better too meaning next year they may play a part.

It is your duty as a manager to play the best team possible.

Although it might seem cruel dropping some players for better players it would be also cruel on the more talented players if you were not pushing the boundary's.

How do you tell players that you are not improving the team so as to preserve clicks in the team?

Just look at all great managers in football and in life they are ruthless and you have to have a bit of that in you to succeed at anything.

They've just been promoted. Replacing members of the team for fear of imagined complacency would be wrong, imo.

Competition does help, but they deserve a chance first. Certainly at youth level where they just earned promotion. Imagine putting everything into a season only to be replaced as a consequence.

So you are managing a team of 16 year olds against teams of 16-18 year olds?

Does your club not promote players one year at a time?

It's a massive problem in youth football that the best players are the most developed players physically. If you keep the team together for two years you have a legit shot at improving and winning.

I've got similar issues with my top-grade U9 team. I'm supposed to tell the clubs which players to send down to 'lesser' squads. It's hard... none of them will be world beaters but none of them are hopeless, either.

In your case, I would be frank and ask each player for a three year committment (U16 through to U18). You may find that not all of them fancy the fight and then you can recruit for the gaps. If all of them do commit, then you have the answer you needed.

With all due respect & love, the answer to ur question isn't even debatable. It's crystal-clear: There is no room for sentiment & emotion whenever ur engaged in a competitive battle. Ur responsibility as a manager is to produce a winning team. This fact isn't debatable because that's what everyone expects of u. No one, including ur own players, expects u to engage in this endeavour without having the capability/talent to lead the ship towards success. So, in order to be loyal to ur own players, u have to have what it takes to be an engine/inspiration for success.

Also, u have to have the courage to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices that will lead ur team towards success and this will inherently include collateral damage like dismissing some players along the way. U have to embrace & accept the needed collateral damage.

Lastly, and this is Sun-Tzu's Art of War's penultimate lesson, u cannot engage in a new war without arming urself with the required weaponry in advance. So, for me, if I'm unable to rise above the pain associated with the required sacrifices, I would refrain from moving my team up a level. I would cross that bridge only if I know I'm capable to make the necessary sacrifices.

Forgive me, but the mere fact ur asking urself the (sacrifice) question, means ur likely better off sticking to ur current comfort zone.. . Obviously, my analysis may be wrong cuz I'm very far from holding the absolute truth. Take whatever u want from it and dump the rest ;))))))

Later reply I know, but it really depends on your ultimate goal.

      Which if these:-

1/ To personally (you) rise through the managerial ranks and try to become a football manager for real
2/ To try and get some of these players I to real football with pro contracts
3/ To compete but mainly have a solid time, keep the entertainment and morale and keep kids in sport rather than less desirable pastimes.
4/ to take this group to be the best they can be as a group

Naturally it can be a combination but if the main focus is 1 or 2 you need to push yourself and he squad by getting and integrating better players.

If 3 or 4 are most important. Show the loyalty and enjoy the ride. Neither is 100% correct. However if you don't improve the squad the team won't improve and some players that could be better than they are may not make the next step as they'll have a ceiling.

You improve more by being the worst player in a good team than the best player in a bad team.

All this being said the increased difficulty of opponent will mean people step up and also some may not cut it and will naturally step away then you can show your worth to get those improvements in.

Hope all goes well for both Mane and O'Wakey's son

Just wanted to through in that i broke my ear drum when i was 5 and it was repaired by grafting skin from some area of my body. So i am told. I am now 59 so, there is hope.

I was playing in the bathtub with an ex-dish detergent bottle and squirted it in my ear. Can't remember if it was an experiment or sudden loss of sense.

It'll be Mayweather no doubt. But the method is going to be interesting. If there's no financial penalty for disqualification, I can see McGregor doing an attempted MMA type move. That way he loses with some sort of face, brings extra huge media attention and continues his career in MMA.

If he tries to box normally, he's going to get murdered as Mayweather drags it out for a points decision, knowing that MMA fights last like 10 seconds.

      Should be funny either way.

Oh dear, this is like asking who's better Messi or Anichibe. Anyway Mayweather wins very easily, probably a stoppage inside 6 rounds. McGregor will be far too easy to hit and he will get hit a lot.

    FDB:
Preferred formation is 433 with a high press. Expect lots of possession and short passing. Solid evidence that he's talented at developing youth players (Coached Ajax youth team prior to senior team) - Toby A., Eriksen, Jan V., Siem de Jong, Cillessen, Blind, Milik etc. were all developed under de Boer. He also threw a very young Davy Klassen into the Ajax first team.
He's not a man to bow down to an idividual, it's all about the team.
    My Opinion:
Leave Palace assets alone for a while. Will take time to implement his tactics. Might not suit Benteke at all but hard to say. Zaha may flourish under Frank though and make prove the best Palace asset early doors.
    Thoughts?

    What date does FPL open?

    Do people prefer a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3?

    What prices will everyone be?

    Will Alonso be a midfielder?

    Have I missed any here?

That's a good summary of the last month of discussion on FFS.

To be fair, there's some good discussion on new players and how they'll fit into their team and the premiership!

There's a lot of noise, but IMO the forum is pretty solid at allowing you to filter through to the interesting stuff.

Tend to search by rating most of the time. People do a good job of up-voting interesting discussions

If you could pick your best premier league XI, but you aren't allowed any players from the top six, who would it be? Limit of 3 players per club.

    i'm thinking:

    Pickford
    Bertrand Evans Van Dijk Coleman
    Zaha Drinkwater Lanzini Shaqiri/Mahrez
    Lukaku Vardy

        Gueye is a good shout.

There has to be better than Evans as well for that CB slot

Can only assume you mean Tom Carroll, since Andy Carroll wouldn't make it into a premier league top 1000

It's torture. This is like an international break X 10 🙁

I'm so desperate to build a team, I'm actually considering a preseason package from fantasy football fix 🙁

I would just wait. I got the pre-season package from Fix and I don't think it's good.

Yeah FF Fix is rubbish.Their price change predictions was terrible last season.I use http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/ for price changes. Its much more accurate than Fix.

On the price prediction game people have been playing, nearly everyone is anticipating United defenders to rise from 5.5ish to 6ish.
Can I ask why? They were expected by a lot of people to be challenging for the title last season, and got prices of 5.5 - why would they rise after finishing FIFTH?!

They were tied for the most CS last season weren't they? I guess that's the reason.
