Great Expectations – Craig Dawson

West Bromwich Albion’s Craig Dawson was a force in 2015/16 and was earmarked as the Baggies’ leading defensive asset heading into last season.

He scored four times during the 2015/16 campaign and also registered 10 clean sheets on his way to 124 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), handing the West Brom defender a 5.0 price tag for 2016/17.

But Dawson only scored his first goal in Gameweek 26 last term, while fellow defender Gareth McAuley, who started the campaign priced at just 4.5, had netted five by that point.

Dawson did produce a further three goals during the back end of last season, and while McAuley is likely to be the main initial target after tallying 131 points, age and history suggest that his goal tally is unlikely to be repeated, meaning there may be little to choose between the pair.

Indeed, McAuley failed to register a single effort on goal after scoring in Gameweek 26 and scored from six of his seven shots on target over the course of the season – with that incredible strike rate suggesting some regression is inevitable in 2017/18.

Meanwhile, Dawson came on strong and appeared to take on the role of chief goal threat at West Brom’s set-pieces – so often a key weapon in Tony Pulis’ armoury.

We’re expecting that trend to continue over the new season.

  • Dawson ended last season with 102 points in FPL – level with Southampton’s Cedric Soares and West Ham United’s Winston Reid, who both cost the same amount. So it’s likely he’ll be handed the same price tag this time around. McAuley and Brunt – providing the latter isn’t reclassified after playing much of his football in midfield – are also likely to come in at a similar price, so other factors should define our thinking heading into 2017/18.
  • Dawson has proven his goal threat over three consecutive seasons, registering twice in 2014/15 (when he only made 29 appearances), and four times in each of the past two seasons. His underlying statistics last term were very impressive, producing more shots in the box (18) and headed efforts (13) than any other Baggies defender. Incredibly, from Gameweek 27 onwards, Dawson contributed to 42.9% of West Brom’s goals having ended the season with three over the final 12 matches.
  • Tony Pulis sides have historically relied on set-pieces for a high percentage of their goals and last season was no different. They were ranked second for goals from set-pieces – 20 of their 43 goals arrived via this method. Yet the Baggies were second-last for attempts from set-plays and fourth bottom for total corners, despite registering more goals from corners (16) than any other side. West Brom’s proficiency from set-pieces means any improvement in that conversion rate could result in a further boost for the attacking prospects of both Dawson and McAuley.
  • While Dawson’s attacking threat comes primarily from his ability at set-plays, he also possessed some assist potential last term, given he played the majority of his football at right-back. He created 21 chances, just three fewer than Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, for example, suggesting he was a shade unfortunate not to produce a single assist. With greater potency up front, Dawson could well chip in with further attacking points.
  • Although Pulis’ side surprisingly only managed to register six shut-outs last term, history and the underlying statistics suggest they should improve upon that number in 2017/18. Only the top eight teams bettered them for both goals against (51) and shots conceded inside the box (297). By comparison, they let in the same number of goals during the 2014/15 campaign (51) and allowed a similar number of close-range efforts (290), yet managed to tally 16 clean sheets.
  • Facing only two of last season’s top six over the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Baggies’ early schedule looks tailor-made for investment in their backline. The defence is ranked second top of our Fixture Ticker over that period, with home matches against Bournemouth, Stoke City, West Ham United and Watford, along with trips to Burnley, Brighton and Hove Albion and Huddersfield Town all offering the platform for early returns.

    A bit of research for y'all on early-season clean sheet rates. Not sure if it's conventional wisdom on here, but there's been sporadic chat about cleanies being rarer in the opening game weeks. So I compared GW 1-5 with GW 6-10 CS rates over the past five seasons, to see if there's been any marked difference.

    2016-17 clean sheets:

    gw1: 2
    gw2: 7
    gw3: 5
    gw4: 3
    gw5: 4
    (average: 4.2)

    gw6: 4
    gw7: 5
    gw8: 6
    gw9: 9
    gw10: 7
    (average: 6.2)

    2015-2016 clean sheets:

    gw1: 5
    gw2: 7
    gw3: 7
    gw4: 7
    gw5: 7
    (average: 6.6)

    gw6: 6
    gw7: 2
    gw8: 3
    gw9: 7
    gw10: 6
    (average: 4.8)

    2014-2015 clean sheets:

    gw1: 4
    gw2: 7
    gw3: 6
    gw4: 7
    gw5: 5
    (average: 5.8)

    gw6: 6
    gw7: 5
    gw8: 3
    gw9: 6
    gw10: 7
    (average: 5.4)

    2013-2014 clean sheets:

    gw1: 7
    gw2: 9
    gw3: 9
    gw4: 7
    gw5: 6
    (average: 7.6)

    gw6: 3
    gw7: 5
    gw8: 4
    gw9: 8
    gw10: 10
    (average: 6)

    2012-2013 clean sheets:

    gw1: 8
    gw2: 3
    gw3: 3
    gw4: 7
    gw5: 4
    (average: 5)

    gw6: 2
    gw7: 5
    gw8: 3
    gw9: 4
    gw10: 6
    (average: 4)

    Average cleanies over the five seasons:
    GW1-5: 5.84
    GW6-10: 5.28

    So, over the past five seasons, the opening five game weeks have actually seen more clean sheets than the subsequent five. I'd been assuming the reverse to be true, so this might sway me towards investing a bit more than planned at the back, or even going 4-4-2. Thoughts?

      Interesting. 442 definitely on the table for me.

      Anything about CS in the first and final thirds of the season?

      There might be more clean sheets but how do we know what a good clean sheet game is early in the season?

      This is why i'd rather move my funds into defence after the first few months, when we hope to know who the good attack/defences are and can go searching for the plum clean sheet fixtures as opposed to shooting aimlessly early on.

        We do have a good idea of the stronger defences from last season though don't we. With the caveat of any managerial / defensive personnel upheaval (particularly CBs) being a factor. And whether there was a major tournament the past Summer causing potential fatigue, etc.

        How the promoted teams will fare is certainly an unknown.

          There's such a large player and manager turnover these days that making assumptions based on last season would be difficult to take as hard fact.

          Of the 'elite' defensive sides from last year....

          Chelsea might be making a transition away from a back three and could be replacing Alonso, Cahill & Matic from their defensive core if you believe speculation. Would assume that will take time to adapt to and they have some tough opening fixtures.

          Spurs make the move to White Hart Lane where the pitch is bigger and i'd assume that will have a big impact on Pochettino's relentless pressing game with a high-ish defensive line leaving his team tiring quicker. Either the pressing will have to tone down and be less aggressive or Pochettino will change his style to suit the pitch.

          United will see another centre-half partner Bailly in Lindelof. Probably a new midfield partner for Herrera & Pogba and potential moves at full-back. Another changing unit.

          Arsenal have transitioned to a 3-4-3...or have they. Still question marks over the system and it's a revolving back door at centre-back with permacrock Koscielny and jumpy 2 footer Mustafi.

            Jumpy two-footer 😀

            All fair points. I can't foresee Chelsea changing a winning system, especially considering how much they're shelling out for a new wingback. But Spurs might take a bit of adapting, and Lindelof's integration might take time at United - Though very kind fixtures + Mo's mentality make that easier.

            Arsenal could offer some good value - Strong defensively late last season (despite revolving CBs as you mention). Decent enough fixtures to start with and no CL.

        Yet the same can be said about putting funds in your attack. Especially if you are looking for this season's Josh King. It's pure speculation, both offensively and defensively. Even teams we expected to put up CS early last season were failing us, causing manager to reevaluate their formation and possibly push more funds into their attack.

    Some squad balance, formations and budget considerations -
    Been having a wee look at the base budget considerations and consequences when opting for each of the main formation options : 3-4-3, 3-5-2 and 4-4-2. What's clear is that if FPL price the desirable performers from last season as everyone seems to be suggesting on here, there's next to no chance of forming a half decent XI or squad!
    I've noted pair of budget 4.5m keepers, but personally will prefer to go with Heaton if he's priced at 5.0 + another playing 4.5.

    4.5 4.5
    ## ## ## 4.5 4.0

    4.5 4.5
    ## ## ## 4.5 4.0

    ## ## 4.5

    2 fodder slots (4.0 def, 4.5 fwd)

    4-4-2 doesn't offer much in the way of backup, just one duff midfielder...

    3-5-2 is slightly more favourable in that I would rate a well chosen 4.5 defender above the duff 4.5 midfielder you are left with when going 4-4-2.

    3-4-3 seems to offer the best back up options in theory, but covering 3 strikers within the remaining 78.0m budget will be tough without finding a good 3rd striker option (which proved tough last season with the exception of Defoe early doors).

    If things were considered to be frantic and unsettled last season with swapping big hitters in and out, I can only see that increasing this season if we have a couple of dozen 10.0m + attacking options available to us. It will be especially key to get the defence setup nailed early doors to keep options up front fluid.

      If you read the last 3 posts it seems to indicate 3 separate reasons to go 4-4-2. Avoid spreading money too much across the attacking players who don't return the value for money. Pick up some early clean sheet points. Leave yourself more money for the high cost attackers. Quality over quantity.

        I can see Legomane and Kickit's points... 4-4-2 looks best on points potential but if you guess wrong, as Legimane suggests, you are taking more hits to get it right.

      Interesting. Food for thought for sure. But why assume these are the main formation options. Surely 4-3-3 is as valid as 3-4-3, for example. In fact it could help you to overcome the problem of finding a good thirds striker, by increasing your attacking budget.

      I'd argue that all formations are valid to consider any way. At this point, we can't say that 5-4-1 isn't going to produce the highest scoring combination of players. We won't know till the season's over, but we'll be able to make guesses only when the prices come out.

      The most interesting thing I take from 'analysing' formations at this point, is that defensive fodder is cheaper than midfield fodder, which means that I will consider having one 4.0 defender (to save 0.5 over a midfielder as third sub), and 4 mid/premium defenders. And that's if I don't go for 5 mid/premium defenders. It all depends on prices, because the 0.5 saved on bench fodder by plumping for a 4.0 def might not be useful in the other positions anyway.

      1. Legomane
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

        Yup, should have included 4-3-3, an oversight. As you say, a 4.0 fodder player will be essential to maximise funds elsewhere!

    3. Postman Ty
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

      The biggest thing I took away from last season was there were a lot of semi-premium mids that I wanted, and not enough spots in my 3-4-3. I'll definitely be trying out the 3-5-2 from the start this season. If we can get a 4.0 starting defender that's equal value to a 4.5 mid for me who makes us happy to have cover but will realistically likely only grab us 2 points if he ever comes on.

        This is a great question. I think I saw that the average first WC was around week 4-6. Do you have data that the attack is less predictable or does it very from year to year. I think the attack can be more worn out by a busy pre-season (e.g. Kane the last two years). If you factor that in and CL rotation potential it may be more predictable.

        1. Bojan Horsemack

          Apologies, I was clear as mud there. What I meant was attacking points from a defender. Just an example, but the likelihood is that Cahill (say 6.5/7) will score more attacking points than Luiz (say 6.0/6.5) over the season, but over a couple of gameweeks it becomes far less predictable. So is it worth spending the extra money considering the lower predictability of returns?

        I don't think it makes a difference. You just pick the players you think will get more points over a shorter period.

      What do we think King will be priced at this season? And will he now be re-positioned as a forward?

      Could be a nice little 3rd striker for people opting for the 3-4-3

            Wouldn't tempt me at all if he's playing in behind Defoe and off penalties.

          With Afobe and most likely Defoe I don't think we can assume 100% King will be a striker in fpl. Bou will probably play Defoe as the main striker, Afobe as back up and King no10. As King is already a midfielder there is a chance he stays there despite playing up front a fair bit last year ... think they had quite a few injuries.

            I think it's highly likely King will be classed as a forward. FPL tends to deal in what it knows, not crystal ball gazing.

        8m-ish I'd guess. Depends on your definition of a third striker, but too expensive for most people, I'd expect.

        Hope he stays a mid for obvious reasons, but I would actually fancy having a comfortable mid-priced forward option. I'd say 7m?

          Yeah same here, even at 7m/7.5m he is great value as a mid, or even a forward for that matter.
          Will be interesting to see how King & Defoe play together - could be a nice little duo!

        I don't normally start the season with a lot of funds used in defence, but I think this season we are going to have a lot of points coming in from defenders. Thoughts on this team?

        Heaton (5M) | Foster (5M)

        Bailly (5.5M) | PvA (5M) | Cedric (5M) | Yoshida (5M) | Dawson (4.5M)

        Eriksen (9.5M) | Coutinho (9M) | Sane (8M) | Pogba (8M) | 4.5M

        Kane (12.5M) | Jesus (9.5M) | 4.5M

        Looking to start with a 4-4-2.

          I like it and will probably go for the same front 6, maybe Salah for Coutinho to upgrade one of my defenders.

              Good idea, but also if some of the players come in at higher prices than I predicted you may have to do that out of necessity.

            Too cheap on Bailly, Dawson, Coutinho and Jesus. Kane could even be 13.0. Posts like this show why it's pointless to come up with full squads without the price list. Yes, you can have ideas of who you want, but making a whole squad before the prices come out is just a waste of time. 🙂

                      If Coutinho comes in at over 9M I will probably get Salah, who should be cheaper.

                      There's no reason for Dawson to be more than 4.5M, but if he is, I'll get Tommy Smith who will probably be 4.5M.

                      If Bailly comes in at 6M that would probably mean all Man Utd starting defenders would be at least 6M, and a Man Utd defender is a must so I'd probably stick with him and downgrade elsewhere.

                      Same goes for Kane - even at 13M I'll still get him.

                        Coutinho will be 9.5 minimum, with Salah hopefully 8.5. Dawson is tricky. Didn't do particularly well in the standings but still scored 4 goals. I actually thought he'd be 4.5 initially like you, but others have swayed me to believe he'll be 5.0. Bailly will be 6.0, but I can see Lindelof coming in at 5.5. He's not a particularly big name that would warrant a 6.0 price tag from the off. Bailly also started at 5.5 when he came in last season. Along with that, he carries no goal real goal threat. Same with Kane. He's in my team regardless of price due to ownership.

                            Yep you have a point regarding Dawson - if he comes in at 5M, then the only budget option in WBA's defence will be Foster. There's no reason for Foster to be more than 4.5M considering he only kept 6 clean sheets last season.

                            Lindelof at 5.5M may be tempting as long as he's nailed on. Certainly offers better value than De Gea at the same price.

                      I agree with Stat... it can be a time saver to start forming your thoughts.
                      I am thinking of getting Lanzini in mine as a valuable price saver that may take off... otherwise this is very similar to my thoughts.

                          Lanzini could be a very valuable prospect as I don't think his price will see a significant increase. If he comes in at the same price as Redmond (6M - 6.5M) then I think he's probably a better pick than Redmond.

                    I personally feel that Bailly and Yoshida represent poor value at those prices. I need more goal threat and/or assurance of bps for defenders over 4.5. Not a bad set up though. I get that it's exciting to play around with your team even when we don't have teams yet!

                        I feel like Man Utd defensive coverage is a must, since their defence is very strong and they have decent fixtures in the first couple of weeks (WHU, swa, LEI, sto, EVE). But you certainly have a point - I like going for defenders who can net me attacking returns as well.

                        To be fair, it really depends on what other players we can get for the same price.

                    4.5 rotating keepers
                    Trippier, Utd Def, Dawson, Soton Def, 4.0 fodder
                    Sanchez, Eriksen, Coutinho, 5.5 punt, 4.5 fodder
                    Kane, Jesus, Benteke

                        In my opinion:

                        Trippier = 5.5M
                        Utd Def = 5.5M (except Valencia at 6M)
                        Dawson = 4.5M
                        Soton Def = 5M (except VVD at 5.5M if he stays)

                        Sanchez = 12M?
                        Eriksen = 9.5M
                        Coutinho = 9M

                        Kane = 12.5M
                        Jesus = 9.5M
                        Benteke = 7.5M

                        By my calculations you will need to cut down 3.5M.

                              He scored 7 goals last season and got 3 assists and kept 12 clean sheets. If he was listed as a defender last season, he would have probably been the top points scorer in terms of defenders. So realistically I can see him coming in at a similar price to Alonso, or perhaps 0.5M cheaper.

                              Lot of chat about attacking defenders being better value this year - the key question to all of this is the classification of wing backs. If and only if the likes of Alonso/Moses/Walker/Rose etc are still all classed as defenders - even 6-7m ones then I honestly think 4-4-2 could be this seasons formation of choice

                              those players are easily going to score more points than a 6m midfielder... and there are tons of 5m defenders like PVA/Brunt who will easily outscore their respectively priced mids as well

                              I’ve always gone cheap in defence, but I’m thinking this season I might well start with this:

                              4.5 4.5
                              6.5 6 5 4.5 (4.5 - rotating in a 4 4 2)
                              10 10 8 6.5 (4.5)
                              12 9 (4.5)

                                  Yep I think we will see a lot of people ditch the traditional 3 at the back formations because of what you said - a lot of defenders will offer better value than their similarly priced midfield counterparts. I'm trying to think of a defence made up of players who have good fixtures, a good chance of keeping clean sheets (at a varying degree of course) and a good chance of attacking returns, and of course, affordable. So far I've come up with this:

                                  Heaton (5M) - Foster (4.5M)

                                  Valencia (6M) - PvA (5M) - Cedric (5M) - Dawson (5M) - A. Smith (4.5M)

                                  Leaves me with 65M to spend on the rest of my players, and with two 4.5Ms (a mid and a striker) that means I can spend an average of around 9M on my front 6 - hopefully meaning that I am able to afford Eriksen, Salah, Sane, Pogba, Kane and Jesus.

                                    yeah looks nice - although think you might push it for that front 6

                                    Kane will be 12 easy alone and both Eriksen and Jesus 9.5-10

                                          IMO these aren't unrealistic predictions:

                                          Eriksen = 9.5M
                                          Salah = 8.5M
                                          Sane = 8M
                                          Pogba = 8M

                                          Kane = 12.5M
                                          Jesus = 9.5M

                                          But if I'm short I will sacrifice Eriksen or Pogba.

                                            I think your under-pricing Jesus. I think he will be 10m minimum and more likely start of at 10.5m.

                                      Yeah we can just speculate atm.

                                      There is a need to wait and see what FPL do with them and then assess. We Have time after FPL opens so it feels a little pointless now to make our plans when they could be just our false assumptions.

                                        yep, all depends on prices/classifications, does have real potential for bigger variety in formations than past years if some of the speculation turns out to be correct - i've always favoured putting all my eggs in the attacking returns basket, and only ever 3 at the back, but if there are a lot of price hikes in mid/attack premium options, and value in defense/wingbacks then i could be tempted to change

                                        if there's one thing FPL is... is unpredictable each season

                                          that's the tricky part, i normally play a frustrated rage wildcard in gw2/3 and slowly work my way up, building tv, and finishing very strong (went up 1.6m in OR over last 14gw end of last season after worst ever season) highest finish only 11k as only play for fun in ML and love a few hits - but would like to employ a little more strategy this year and get good OR - finding a good starting squad of 'season keepers' would really help this, and stop me taking constant wasteful hits in first half of season

                                    Same question every year about whether or not to put a few more quid in defence.

                                    The reality of how we play this game is that the first time those funds are needed for a high performing mid or fwd, early on, the first thing we will do is sacrafice that extra money we put into defence.

                                    Also...the first 4.0 defender that becomes available will be brought in by is and the money saved ploughed into mids and fwds as well.

                                    It's just how we roll....we may as well just set up our defence for it to begin with.

                                    5.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0(awaiting the first actual 4.0 pick)

                                      We need a few injuries to first team players (particularly with the promoted teams) to get a few playing 4.0 defenders.

                                      i agree totally, exception to this might be taking a punt on having a pedro 8m ish type player instead of say sanchez c.12m, and having 4 x 5.5m players at back that are potential season keepers, instead of 4 x 4.5m average 2 pointer defenders - it seemed that a few seaons back there were more 4.0 starting defenders from promoted clubs which really enabled a strong midfield, pretty much no 4.0m nailed starting defs these days

                                      If there looks to be a 4.0m defender, I'll jump on from the start. If not, I'd rather have a 4.5m as placeholder - because if your non-playing 4.0m defender falls to 3.9m, you're stuck with him.

                                      I can't remember any year where so many top teams were playing wing backs though.

                                      3 of the top 6 with wing backs, plus Mourinho + Pep's team not letting the other team have the ball.

                                      ...and Liverpool. 😆

                                        I agree....however....knowing that and having the discipline to ignore the big hitting mid or fwds (who are captain picks as well btw) is another matter.

                                        No matter how much we convince ourselves now that we will play with three pricey wing backs the reality will be somewhat different the first time a mid scores a brace...or for the vast majority it will be anyway.

                                          This. People get knee-jerky straight after games have finished. What makes people think they'll refrain from dipping into cash tied up in expensive defenders when a bandwagon emerges? And if you have the discipline to stick with expensive defenders, fair play. But sticking with them is one thing. Whether it's to your detriment is another.

                                            See below. I went heavy in defence fairly early on last season and then set about raiding the funds when I needed to.

                                            It's just what happens.

                                          Inversely, traditionalists will have to have discipline to not downgrade their premium mids offering measly occasional assists, for defenders banking sixes weekly whilst also being parked on the edge of an opponents box. 😉

                                        Shush. Just trying to get some convo going. Although it will be true for most.

                                        I was one of the few who put a lot of money into defence last season to begin with.

                                        Courtois, Walker, Valencia Baines, Macauley 4.0 by GW 4 or 5 if I remember right.

                                          Using your early wildcard in week 2 last season to get all them expensive defenders in certainly seemed to work for you too.

                                      I'm always a skinflint with defence and always regret it - I'm probably gonna go down the premium couple of wing-backs route first off, then reassess at WC - depends how much the WBs are though of course, and assumes they will be classed as defenders!

                                      Why would he go to Liverpool? He'd be on the bench as much as at Arsenal.

                                    Anyone know if there were any viable playing 4.5 strikers at the start of last - or any - season? Like the idea of 4-4-2/4-5-1 but at least you can get a choice of nailed 4.5 defs as bench fodder.

                                      There is occasionally the odd one - Anichebe, Pogrebniak a few years ago I think. Even then minutes are almost always sketchy and returns are thin on the ground.

                                      probably more likely to get higher returns with a 4.5m defender...

                                    I'm not against spending money on defenders at all but I always seem to miss the underpriced big hitter every year. Alonso this year, Alderweireld & Bellerín last year. Coleman the year before that(I think). There's always someone and I always miss him. Will pay someone £5 to tell me i'm an idiot for ignoring 'that' player when the time comes this year.

                                    Has anyone ever come up with a 'points per £million' metric so we can judge a player by whether they're really worth the spend?

                                      Yes but its not that simple as you got to factor in them being a good captain option
