Scout Report – Steve Mounie

Having already splashed out on big money deals to bring in Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince, Huddersfield Town broke their club-record transfer for a third time to sign striker Steve Mounie from French club Montpellier.

The 22-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £11.44 million plus add-ons, and has penned a four-year deal with the Terriers.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner believes that the Benin international has the tools to flourish in the English top-flight:

“He has real physical attributes that should be perfect for the Premier League, plus we have already seen his talents as a football in his remarkable season in France… At just 22 years old, he is only going to improve too. Given what he is already capable of, that is very exciting.”

The History

Born in Parakou, Benin, Mounie moved to France as a youngster and started his professional career at Montpellier’s academy.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a cup tie against AC Ajaccio in October 2014, but had to wait until the start of the 2015/16 season to make his league bow.

In August 2015, Montpellier sent Mounie on a season-long loan to Ligue 2 outfit Nimes in order to gain valuable first-team experience.

Mounie took his chance to impress, registering 11 goals and five assists in 32 league appearances, returning to Montpellier last summer ready to establish himself in their first-team squad.

He produced an ever better goal return last term, netting 14 times and managing three assists from 35 league outings in a side that could only finish 15th in Ligue 1.

Mounie has made six appearances for Benin, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

While Wagner added Belgian international Laurent Depoitre last month, the need to bolster his attacking options was clear after his side managed just 56 goals in their 46 league matches last season.

Mounie’s strengths appear very similar to Depoitre. Both players are fearsome in the air, although the former boasts superior athleticism, which could be key given that the “Terriers’ identity” places great emphasis on pressing from the front.

The Benin international, who stands at 6ft 3in tall, averaged a staggering 8.4 successful aerial duels per match last term, while six of his 14 league goals came from headers.

His other eight goals were scored from inside the penalty area on his favoured right foot, with several smart finishes highlighting his composure and showcasing a sound technical ability.

Mounie also possesses good movement and pace for a player of his size and is able to drift out wide and play as a winger if required. However, his link-up play has been criticised, particularly in terms of his first touch.

Impressively, the 22-year-old averaged a shot every 26.95 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, which bettered Arsenal’s club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette for Lyon (28.67).

However, his conversion rate is far from comparable. While Lacazette boasts a laudable 33%, Mounie recorded just 13.3% in the same division.

In fairness, that is typical for a target man who registered 41% of his efforts as headers; only 9.5% of Lacazette’s shots were aerial attempts.

When we look for comparisons in the Premier League, Christian Benteke fired 105 shots for Crystal Palace in 2016/17 – the same number as Mounie for Montpellier – converting 14.3% into goals. More than 49% of Benteke’s efforts were headers.

There are clear parallels to be drawn and, like Benteke, Huddersfield’s new striker will flourish only if fed with a regular supply and a variety of crosses. It remains to be seen if Wagner’s side are equipped to deliver; recent signings Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince are likely to be key figures in that respect.

Given the outlay, Mounie would seem the favourite to start in the lone striker role for the Terriers in Wagner’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. That could see him priced between 6.0 and 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League – slightly more expensive than fellow signing Depoitre.

He’s already been added as an 8.5 option in Sky Sports – an identical price to his new Belgian team-mate. That could certainly earn him attention as a third forward option should he settle quickly.

Considering Huddersfield’s favourable opening fixtures (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), that’s clearly a possibility.

We won’t be short of attacking options from Wagner’s side though, with Ince, Mooy and the 12-goal Elias Kachunga also set to vie for our attention. The classification and price of the latter may well be decisive.

For now, Huddersfield’s aggressive recruitment drive demonstrates that the Yorkshire club are determined to seize their chance in the top flight. That’s reassuring for us Fantasy managers, who will look to unearth some value from Wagner’s ranks.

We will be paying keen attention to the pre-season form and formation, with a Huddersfield attacker very much in our thoughts as an early makeweight.

Time will tell whether Mounie will emerge as the go-to option, but his credentials at least suggest that he has the potential to grow as a factor in Premier League.

Something will turn up - even if it's waves of Capoue, Allen and Phillips, some bargains will arrive from somewhere. They just won't stick around like Mahrez did.

GW2: Josh King starts in midfield. Defoe starts up front.

GW3: Josh King starts in midfield. Defoe starts up front.

But is a number 10 midfield? I can see King starting more or less up with Defoe interchanging to lead the attack.

I can't see him out wide and, let's face it, he isn't a "traditional" midfielder.

I think it's a shame King is a forward, particularly with Defoe's arrival but I think the No 10 and some of those who play it, causes issues.

Of all those who did play the 10 last season, King did also play as the the lone striker, so I can see why he has toppled into the forwards.

His position is fluid, but I think everyone will agree he is an attacking midfielder.

I'm pretty sure he has played on the flank in recent seasons.

I just think official FPL have concentrated too much on what happened last season and they have been very myopic towards the Defoe transfer.

        1. Rum Ham
          • 9 Years

          I don't agree.

My perception of King is that he's always been a striker. This has been whilst he has been at Bournemouth and at clubs prior to that.

Granted, many of his performances last season weren't as the main striker, but even behind the main striker where is the line between centre forward and attacking midfielder? I think perception plays as much of a role as what a formation graphic on Match of the Day does to be honest. Even when playing with Afobe he was in many cases further up the field.

I for one expected him to be changed to a forward and I don't think it's that *big* a deal that he has. There's a case for either classification to be honest.

I'm not on the wind up, honest. At Man Utd he was considered a striker, coming on for Welbeck a couple of times.

Just because he was played in a wide attacking midfield role at times under Howe, doesn't mean that's his natural position.

The definition of 'striker' and 'midfielder' doesn't mean so much today for so many players. Clearly defined positions are gone, there's always going to be overlap and King is one of those players. Sanchez plays both positions- which is he? Answer- he's both. FPL have to make an educated guess on where they'll likely play and categorise.

Just play the game as it has been made and don't moan.

Trying to look at the bright side, if Defoe and King hit it off, then 7.5m isn't so bad as a 3rd striker.

Would've preferred 6.5m or 7m, but he did far too well in the second half of last season for that to happen.

      1. The Tinkerman

I'd consider Lacazette, but seems like I'll be going Lukaku over him at the moment. If I need funds though, he'll be the alternative to Lukaku I choose. Not sure about Knockaert. I know he's a key figure for them but the general consensus here is that 6.0 is slightly steep. Gross could also take some set-pieces off him? Fabregas is great when he starts at that price, but like you said, rotation will hinder him as an asset.

Lacazette, when you are talking about lone striker for Arsenal it is output rather than cost that is important, and it difficult to imagine a failure. Arsenal strikers have always done well, even Giroud when he was starting.

I didn't consider them before their prices, and I don't think I would consider most of the offensive players even if they were 0.5-1.0 cheaper.

I want to see the prices of Ozil, Stanislas, Phillips, Defoe, Llorente, Mane, Lukaku and Kane before I consider Knockaert, Lacazette, King, Salah and Benteke. It's pointless to judge players without comparing them to the competition.

Fabregas will probably be in my team GW1 because it's a plum fixture that Fabregas should start.

Sane is awesome he could be the alternative if as you say, they don't sign Sanchez.

I'm thinking 11.0 - 11.5. And Kane + Lukaku is exactly what I'm starting with. Also have my eye on a City mid as their attacker, Sane at the moment if Sanchez doesn't go there. Also going with Pogba, with Lukaku, however.

          From https://www.premierleague.com/news/435345.

"Across Merseyside, Everton's Davy Klaassen has been handed a price tag of £7.5m."

Klaassen's flying under the radar a bit. Still only 24, he was made Ajax captain last year, so is clearly capable of grabbing hold of his team and pushing them forward - leadership that was lacking with Everton (and Barkley) last season. Could be an absolute steal at 7.5m.

The best bit is that we get to wait 5 or 6 GW's to see how Everton are shaping up.

Why wait?...do you not think they'll score some goals early on?...It's the defenders we need to avoid but they'll still score a few.

Yep, perhaps. I just can't see myself starting with an Everton attacker unless we see good things during pre-season (against decent opposition).

You look at the Citeh or Liverpool attacking players and on paper you'd think Firmino and Aguero/Jesus would be the ones to get, but often in games the wide attacking mids were played in behind while the striker plays a false 9 position. I'm not saying Everton have the personnel to play that way, but watching them play a few games should reveal who offers the potential for the best returns. (I'd be all over Klaassen in the #10 role)

I know he's a better player than Siem de Jong but that's all I can think about when I think about Klaassen. It's really difficult to gauge how the transition will go.

Thankfully with their early fixtures there's six or so games monitor.

Is the pool of forwards too small in FPL?

Conversations about the new draft game seemed to used 10-person leagues as the example, and I wondered what the pool at the end of the draft would look like, using 16/17 total scores:

20th best GK: 69 (Randolph, WHU)
50th best DEF: 86 (Ward, CRY)
50th best MID: 95 (Fer, SWA)
30th best FWD: 55 (Janssen, TOT)

Forwards will need to be picked early in draft due to the limited number of high scoring strikers.

20 as forward vs 18 as mid. Think Lacazette has pretty much confirmed the mid.

Yep, the Lacazette signing makes it clear that Wenger considers Sanchez as an attacking mid / emergency striker.

If Lacazette was to get a knock, I think we'd see Welbeck ahead of Sanchez leading the line.

I'd like to see more of these changes. The pool of realistic forwards always seems far punier than for the other positions, which means fantasy teams tend to look alike there, which makes the game less interesting.

You've gotta prioritise or end up playing a different formation.

In a draft league I played last year with 6 players, I got Lukaku Costa and Kane as my first 3 picks. This sounds good, but it was a mistake as it got to a point in the season where I wanted to pick up cheaper players while Kane was injured (but couldn't get rid of course) and any emerging striker was simply off limits to me. This pushed me to plenty of fodder.

This year I'll definitely select a pro mid ASAP like Hazard or Mané with only one or two top strikers with my first 4 picks.

Bournemouth singing Defoe seems so strange.

They've already got a few young strikers that are obviously good- like King and to a lesser extent Afobe.

Defoe took pens and was set up in a team as its only proper attacking output, the latter he's very unlikely to get as Bournemouth have a different attack system.

I can't see him getting near the returns he did at Sunderland, combined with his age and a 3 year contract- seems very strange.

I'd understand it as a squad strengthener, but surely has been given playing time assurances considering he's still got it in him to play every game and wants to play for England again etc.

    TL;DR

Defoe is great and a great guy, but going to Bournemouth seems like a weird deal for all involved. Should've gone to somewhere like Stoke or Brom.

To me it seems like a great move for both parties. Bournemouth create chances and Defoe takes chances.

He's twice the striker Afobe is, Wilson is too injury-prone to make a meaningful impact over a season, and King can play in the side with Defoe (either in a 4-4-2 or as a second striker).

      1. noquarternt
        • 8 Years

I understand your points, but think it's far too simplistic to say they create chances and he finishes them. Defoe had nearly every attack move put through him at Sunderland and as such looks really good. I really can't see him being nearly as successful at Bournemouth.

        1. Rum Ham
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Is it not equally simplistic to say that because all attacks were centred around him at Sunderland and now he's moved to more competent attacking outfit he won't do as well?

Honestly struggling to see a valid reason why this isn't a good signing for Bournemouth.

He got 15 goals, 5 penalties of which how many did he win? None? 1?

Defoe produced fewer key passes (20) in 3323 minutes than Afobe produced in 1454 minutes (23). So he has little in the way of measurable creativity.

He's nearly 35 and they gave him a 3 year contract. He will slow down regardless of his clean living etc and be unable to play a proper press fairly soon.

King got 16 goals alone( lots of pens I know) not to mention Wilson, Afobe and the mids' contributions.

What's his job? To be a penalty taker or a target man on the counter? Don't think Bournemouth need either.

Again he's a good guy and good player, just doesn't seem to fit with Bournemouth.

I could be proven wrong of course, just seems strange.

Full disclosure: I've read about him from other websites and stolen quotes above.

I dunno. He'll presumably be the regular striker, with King as the 10 and maybe mixing it up on the wing. Bournemouth will be more concerned about avoiding relegation than pushing for Europe. If he loses that extra bit of speed, he converts to an impact sub. It clouds the situation for us FPL managers, but these clubs have shown time & time again that we are not priority--harrumph!

Turns 35 in october, so not exatly getting any younger. Guedd that he´s a friend of Eddie Howe has something to do with it, and maybe they are looking to sell King. Afobe is pretty inconsistent and Wilson is very injury prone. At least Defoe is a proven goals scorer.

My initial reaction was exactly the same. They got a good thing going there developing young hungry talents. So why bring in old man defoe?
On second thoughts it makes sense. He will be a mentor this season, can be relied on if things don't go to plan and they end up in a relegation dogfight, will take pressure off afobe which could be what he needs, and is a stop gap for Wilson who they clearly believe in.

Cherries play a 4-4-1-1 so with (nailed-on?) King behind a CF you'd have to ask is Defoe better than Afobe, Wilson and Mousset? Is it an upgrade?
It looks a severe upgrade to me and if you look at the supply from the likes of Fraser & Stan as well as raiding full-backs it looks like a good deal? £65k per week, 3 years, free transfer and he knows the club & EH well so could probably ease into a coaching role as the years pass and appearances reduce with age.
I fear we may see a 'hefty price' though based on The Tekkers Eight Mill... 8.5/9?

      1. noquarternt
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

I honestly don't see him as an upgrade. Afobe will take time to become established, fair enough, but Wilson and King are already better prospects than Defoe.

If he's a backup buy, it's good- if it's to play at the expense of Wilson or King, it's a negative move.

Surely 8.0 is the upper limit? 9?!?

        1. Netley Lucas
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Wilson never quite returned to his best before yet another big injury and I'm not convinced Afobe is good enough to lead the line week-in week-out like Defoe can. Clearly King is nailed and they will need cover for both although I note Fraser has played more centrally at times.
If Tekkers is 8 w/o pen's and in arguably a worse side than BOU then Defoe has to come in higher, question is how much higher?
BOU won the most pen's last season, 10. If Defoe stays fit and keeps his form then it's not impossible to see 20 goals which is Costa/Kun 16/17 territory.

I like to have a relatively strong defense, as I think it gives me more flexibility, especially when injuries, bans, rests, and unexpected postponements crop up. If last year's wingbacks are still classed as defenders, then the strong defense strategy might be in for a golden age.

The problem with switching to 4 at the back is that you're more likely to be playing bad defensive fixtures unless you invest a lot for fixture proof defs like Alonso. And you'll be spending more transfers on them instead of your mids and attackers

    1. noquarternt
      • 8 Years

But that's what you go for.

343 to 443 is just a change of one mid to one defender.

Take how much you're spending on your 4th midfielder and see if there's a defender you could get for the same price.

2 premiums 1 Brunt type and then the usual 4.0/4.5 everyone else has.

My biggest punt for this FPL season is Mesut Ozil.

Ozil is a forgotten man in terms of FPL overshadowed by Alexis Sanchez as an Arsenal attacking option. But, this season we could see Mesut Ozil flourish to his best. Though had a dismal season to his standard, Ozil, notched career-high 12 goals last term with 11 assists. The year before that, he had 19 assists and 6 goals.

This season, I expect to see the best of Ozil because of mainly two reasons:

    1) Ozil will get the desired freedom with 3-4-2-1. He flourished in the formation with 3 assists and a goal in last 4 PL games.
    2) The Lacazette factor is a key. His game-play suits a pacy forward like Lacazette. The Frenchman and the German, along with the Chilean hopefully, will benefit each other a lot.

Final say: With Lacazette in 10.5 and Sanchez around 12, Ozil will be the cheaper (around 9.5) and reliable option into Arsenal attack. He could easily match the tally of these two pacy forwards.

    What's your say?

I agree, could be a nice alternative to a LIV/MAC milf especially if you can't fit Lacazette in and Sanchez remains in a slightly less attacking role and is priced prohibitively.

He's a great option but hardly constitutes a punt!

Depends on price though. With Salah at 9.0 surely a nailed on Arsenal mid will be significantly more.

Expecting the best season since arriving in the Premier League. Will reach 200-point mark once again. £9.0m would be an absolute steal but I think we'll have to pay a little bit more.

Expecting Gross to be 5.5? I've got my eye on him as a 5th mid too. Why definite starter?

Also Stoke has poor starting fixtures..

Gross has top flight experience and it's Brighton. I don't see why he won't start in that team. Preseason should give a better idea. The backup to Gross is Shelvey.
Butland has burned me enough in the past. My burning will to do something different from the template is another reason. He's a save monster. People are unable to look beyond Heaton.

Fair point. I'm not saying he won't start. I'm wondering why he's nailed in your team. I'm eyeing shelvey up too.

I've made a little notes on Gross. It looks like this:
                  1. He's good at set pieces but so is knockaert. It's up in the air.
                  2. Lack of options at Brighton. It's either him or Brighton. Knockaert at 6.5 is a bit high for me.
                  3. I've been watching a few Bundesliga games lately. I like him as an option.
                  4. It's 5.5 anyways. He's definitely worth the punt. Don't see any other decent midfielders at that price other than Shelvey who plays a bit deeper.

I mean, really, how would we rate a team that isn't complete and for which you don't even know if those are the right prices so you don't even know if you can have those players that you have slotted in? And why would we know any better than you? So what is the end point of having a RMT of just part of a team when there are no prices? Is there one? If not, then it's pointless.

I want to see more defender prices through these leaks. Based on what we've seen so far, I'm wondering if they're going to be pricing mids and forwards slightly higher and holding down the price of defenders to try to encourage more use of four at the back.

Could be trying to do that to break up the tried and true "343 is the only way to play the game" nonsense. I'd welcome it. Makes it a bit harder.

Yep. I'd like to see more variety. A few 3-5-2s helped break things up a little last season, but that was more down to paucity of strikers than anything FPL did.

They did price the defenders a little kinder last season, but the carrot wasn't quite attractive enough for many people to bite. If they price many of the key midfield and forward assets that tiny bit higher it might be enough of a stick to push a few more managers in that direction.

Yep, and Salah, Klaassen and Benteke have all come in about 0.5 higher than I was expecting. Individually that's not much, but it could add up and lead to decisions like going for Maguire over Ince etc.
