Scout Notes

Pre-Season Guide Underway

Today we officially launched our pre-season guide page for build-up to the new season.

You can now access this via the main menu at the top of the page on desktop and via the slide-in on mobile and tablet. The pre-season tab has temporarily replaced the team news item.

This pre-season guide is something we run and maintain every season, with the aim to give you a complete summary of each team’s progress throughout their summer friendlies.

We list all the currently published fixtures and, as matches are played, we will link both to the club’s official report and also to the relevant scout notes page providing details for that match. We will also supply at a glance goalscorers and, where possible, assists on the round-up page.

As the friendlies progress, we will collect the key Scout Notes for each team and sum up the form players, listing their statistics achieved.

During this time, we will also re-launch our Scout Notes articles which provide summaries of the previous day’s friendly matches, including our take on the tactics employed and the events that took place.

Watford put out a development squad for their encounter with Woking on Saturday, so, as it stands, the major friendly matches look set to start on Monday July 10, with Stoke City’s tour of Switzerland getting underway. Further fixtures follow on Wednesday and then ramp up next weekend.

Throughout these matches, we will record every minute played by every player in a bid to round-up our coverage with a summary, not only of the best performers, but also those who saw the most action and are most likely to fit and firing for the opening fixtures.

The pre-season guide also acts as a hub for all our major summer articles. We collect all the Scout Reports, Moving Targets and team based articles for each club and list and link to them here.

So, if you missed an article or are pondering the potential of a new signing, check this section and, hopefully, we’ve got it covered for you.

If you are aware of any friendly match fixtures currently not listed, or would like to make a request for any other additions to our pre-season coverage, please drop us a line at support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

I Hope Pre-Season Will Tell Me....

What are the three main nuggets of information you hope pre-season will tell you.

Here's mine to get the discussion started.

    1. The emergence of a 4.0 starting defender
    2. Whether Gross will steal some of Knockaert's set pieces at Brighton.
    3. Whether Pogba will play in an attacking midfield role supporting Lukaku (may depend on a DM transfer being made).

From a 'traditionalist' 3-4-3 player and so many options in Fpl this year, will 3-5-2 be a better formation this year?

The search for a starting 4.5 striker will be key to that and the emergence of a couple of strong sub 6m options too.

I reckon I'll be a 3-4-3 starter though as per.

I'll go 2 up top but my 3rd striker won't be 4.5m. It leaves you no wiggle room to transfer him out, especially if he drops to 4.4 My benchie striker will be a 5 or 5.5m one who is likely to get game time even if off the bench and who I can trade in a "FT deal with some flexibility.

Similarly I won't buy a 4.0 defender who might never play and drop to 3.9

I also like to have some wiggle room - problem is that the more wiggle room you allow yourself, the more points you'll end up regularly benching. Insurance always costs, so too in FPL 🙂

Agree, and if price rises are afoot in terms of 0.5/1.0 especially in the midfield selections, I think FPL will make it more difficult for the casual player as they may now need to unearth 3/4 players they never have heard of, so adding to a previous HT, I'm all for some subtle increases as I think this may reward those who invest a little more time/research in the game.

All about wing-backs and No 10's. Hopefully we will see some surprises that will unlock bargains.

We spotted Capoue pre-season last time out. Another one of those, this time one that can sustain the output, would be pretty marvellous.

Oh and no Bosellis. I fell for Andre Gray (9 goals in pre-season) last summer and just about got away with it.

        1. I'm not sure you'll get your answer. Pre-season is often about balancing finance and fitness. Expect a few fringe players getting games so they can increase the number of matches they play for commercial reasons.

Judging from a competitive standpoint, identifying the right cheapie like Capoue is a blessing, even if we put him on the bench at first.

From a psychological view, identifying the massively wrong cheapies who we'd pick to start like Boselli. We'll spend the whole season thinking "I'm such a moron".

Picking the right midfielder from those teams who seem to be very crowded in that area, like City or Liverpool.

I find preseason to be the best bit about FPL. We're all in a really dark cave, some have a few matches to guide us through the tunnels, and others end up wandering off into a pit. And it's an absolute joy re-reading preseason RMTs from those who wander off later on; so maybe falling for Bosellis might be a good thing.

This season my intention is to ensure my cheapest defender is 4.5, not 4.0 and 5th Mid is 5.0 not 4.5. That way 1FT can fix the inevitable GW1 error and switch the the one I missed.

What midfield budget options to go for as my fourth mid (4.5-6.5 bracket).
Whether Pogba can be a proper attackikg threat this season.
How will the Liverpool mids line up. Will it be evident from pre-season games Who to go for out of tour four options?
Also, third steiker. Who to go for who's not Andy Gray or Danny Graham.

      * If the array of interesting mid-price striker options that seem to be emerging will be viable choices. Previous season I felt that apart of premium strikers there were no real options that could compete with the midfield plethora.

      * If spurs will stick to a predictable starting eleven or if it will be more like City where few are truly nailed on.

      * How chelsea will look without Hazard.

Its those fixtures- just looks a great captain option for the first few. I'm keen on Kane too - but partly out of fear, although as Mark says above think there are viable alternatives in Eriksen and Alli - who will be cheaper.

While Pogba could be a strong option is usually the main striker at ManU who dominates. Can't see past Lukaku currently.

Chances are I'll have both Lukaku and Kane and work a team around them.

Centre back can play full back..... rotation looms across the Chelsea defence.

Not a wingback though, unless you're suggesting pushing Azpi up to rest Moses.

he is a left footed CB if anything Cahill is the one who will be rotated- Azpi is most nailed cause of his versatility

I would love it if he took a regular CB spot and Azpi then replaced Moses as wing-back.

Thing is, that would have been the obvious choice last season but Conte took a chance on Moses instead. He must have had his reasons, so why change now?

Maybe he wasn't comfortable with the centre backs he had and opted to play Azpi there, rather than preferring Moses as a wing-back. I think Azpi has enough attacking potential to be good for that position. Moses is too sloppy.

This gossip from The Sun is fun:

"According to The Sun, Mourinho has given United the green light to pursue Bakayoko if a deal for Nemanja Matic cannot be agreed. Chelsea are hardly likely to want to sell one of their players to United after recent events, and so Bakayoko could be following Lukaku soon."

Brilliant Moanie: Give us Matic or we'll nick the player you REALLY want!

    @Mark @Jonty @Paul

The Numbers Game articles are great, but please can we have a 'The Numbers Game - The Best Players of the Season' article.

It's one thing knowing who the best players are in 20 individual teams, but it would be good to know who the numbers say are the best players in the entire league?

Surely we want to target the best players in the league for next season (we need to see those numbers) - and not the best players in 1 particular team out of 20.

I'm not sure if I have explained that very well. Hopefully it makes sense.

Yeah, I know. I have tried to create tables for this myself - the tables are called "Players of the Season". But I have taken a pretty amateurish swing at it. Plus it's one thing looking at black and white numbers in a table; when Paul writes it up and does the analysis and draws some conclusions, you tend to get a lot more out of it.

Feels good, like we're back (not that there was a huge time period where we weren't there)

There's rumours (although not very good ones) that we're going to be in for Bakayoko now. Would be great if we get in ahead of Chelsea again

If we get a CDM to pair up with Ander then I see Pogba being unleashed as a no10 behind Lukaku.. 🙂

Would you be more pleased with Bakayoko or Matic Andy?

There are rumors that Bakayoko said this: "“I’ve always wanted the opportunity since a child, when they came calling I didn’t have to think twice. I’m really delighted to hopefully be a part of their history.

“Who would say no to the biggest club in the world, the best stadium in England, the best fans? It’s a perfect opportunity."

        Funny fella if true. 😀

Have to be completely honest - I know nothing about Bakayoko but he seems to be rated and is young.

Matic a bit older, has worked with Mourinho before but had a bit of an off season recently before doing better this year.

If Bakayoko is as good as they say then I'd say him due to age but I won't turn my nose up at Matic

I know everybody wants Kane and Lukaku to be "cheap". But Lukaku at under 11 would have 100% ownership. Higher pricetags will make the game more interesting imo

I can see Lukaku taking his trolling to whole new levels this year. Just not sure whether it will be the owners or non owners on the receiving end...

Think he'll be the highest owning player from the start. West Ham, Swansea and Leicester as the first 3 fixtures it would be very risky to go without imo. Kane can somehow be covered by Eriksen/Alli.

Yes, but i think that applies even more so to Kane.

We either have to decide which one to go with, or have both and massively struggle to build a balanced squad behind them.

Lots of people thought it would be impossible to build a balanced squad around Aguero and Ibra and that turned out ok.

Did it? I'd say the people that chose lukaku at 9.5 and/or Costa at 10 did better.
Also we had great value in firmino, coutinho, mane, eriksen, Alli. They are all big hitters that should be in your reckoning and now will be priced as such.

What would be the max price you would pay for Lukaku? I think 12.0... At 12.5 i'd rather have Lacazette or Jesus for 2.0 cheaper, and het Mikhi/Pog + a utd DEF for nearly same price as Kaku...

      1. Royal5
        • 12 Years

If you can get Lacazette/Siggy insted of Lukaku/Carrick I would get the first 2

If Mikhitaryan got a price drop to 8.5 he could be another very good option as a second or third mid churning out assists with a few goals here & there.

Ozil, Mkhi, Fab could be 24.5 - bargain if chelsea son't sign any more central mids

    1. Fantasy Gold

I agree Mhki could be a fantastic pick but I still worry about Jose rotating him and taking him off early

I doubt many people would choose Mkhi over Pogba if they are priced the same though.

      Big time interested.

His price should be under £8m going by his last few seasons ans he should be classed as a mid by right.
If he ever got some of his mojo back he could make himself essential.

Should be on some free kicks and could challenge Baines for pens you would be crazy not to be showing some interest in him.

I'd be interested at 7.5m mid... 8.0 would be too much of a stretch after watching him deteriorate the last 3 or so years. But first hint of form & he could go straight in

His play style suits Arsenal though.

He is a tricky, technical player.

I think he'll score bags of goals

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

That's the thing - nobody knows... Lacazette could do anything from a debut hattrick to a first 5x games points of 2-2-2-2-2, and everything in between. I don't think he'll do either, but i don't know what he'll do. Will be fascinatng to sit back & observe the first few games, things could look very different by the first international break.

Not just him, Managers should be cautious of every new player in the league, some will hit the ground running but more often than not they will need time to adjust.

Depends on the players playing strategy really.
