The Community Round-Up

The waiting finally came to an end this week as the Fantasy Premier League opened its doors for the new season.

With the full player list revealed, our Hot Topic posters have been eager to pass on their advice on bargain hunting and selecting the premium players.

Over in our community article section, top tips for winning FPL’s new draft game were dished out, as was advice on winning formations for the coming season and analysis on the previously underperforming teams set for a far better 2017/18.

Elsewhere, our Members’ tables focused on the midfielders who are due a goal come August’s kick-off, while we conclude our round-up with a peek at the FPL community competitions up and running just days after the game’s launch.

The Community Articles

FPL’s draft game opens next week and veteran of the format Pav A Nice Day was on hand to offer his top tips for success. Essential reading.

Also new for 2017/18 could be a change of fortunes for a handful of underperforming sides from last season, according to Prokopta’slook at the plexiglas principle and how teams rarely offer the same returns over a number of campaigns. He lists four sides in particular that he believes will convert far more chances over the 2017/18 campaign.

Another new feature for the season ahead could be an end to the popular 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations. Firetog’s detailed calculations point to a four, or even five-man defence potentially providing more lucrative options.

Meanwhile, Niemi has dropped by to offer advice on the best players to get in and those to ditch for Gameweek 17 in Fantasy Eliteserien, the last set of fixtures before this Norwegian top-flight game takes a short summer break.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The launch of FPL on Wednesday unsurprisingly dominated discussions. But before we were able to finally end a summer of waiting and log in, FPL price setters continued their drip-feeding of player valuations to whet our appetite.

A helpful Diesel001 collected all the early price revelations in one place to act as an archive of opinions on the players you felt offered value or were overpriced.

With the full player list to choose from, I noticed a wealth of options in midfield priced at 7.0.

This “Magnificent Seven” group has clearly caught your eye too, according to our discussion on midfield value. Willian is among those with that price tag who many are considering, especially as his Chelsea side have a strong easy opening fixture at home to Burnley and the threat of rotation has lessened due to Eden Hazard’s absence through injury. Ludo has been taking a look at how the Brazilian stacks up against his Spanish team mate Pedro, who costs 1m more.

Then on Saturday, Stilicho chimed in with his hot topic to survey your current midfield configuration. That saw Ronny Hotdog advocate the classic two heavy-hitter/two mid-price set-up, with Willian and Ramsey getting a lot of love throughout the thread.

Meanwhile, the 8.5 price tag for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane attracted the attention of Sleeptalk.

We also asked for your thoughts on bargains across all positions, with Jairzinho particularly keen to discuss Southampton’s Nathan Redmond, who is valued at 6.5.

Firetog’s discussion of the best formation for 2017/18 also spilled out into our Hot Topics, with us asking whether Romelu Lukaku’s (11.5) move to Manchester United, coupled with a high valuation for Spurs’ Harry Kane (12.5), means a strong third striker is a luxury few can afford.

There was further chat about forwards in our discussion on your FPL frontlines, as well as Enzo the Baker’sanalysis of the best attacking options among the top sides.

FPL Virgin wonders whether sacrifices in midfield can also be made to make room for last season’s wing-back and full-back stars who offer the chance of returns at both ends of the pitch.

Among this group of versatile players is James Milner, who has been reclassified from a midfielder to a defender after a season at left-back. The Liverpool penalty taker was among the most eye-catching players mentioned in N3il M3llor’s hot topic on players that have changed classification.

Milner’s successful spot-kick in Liverpool’s 4-0 rout of Tranmere Rovers was among the highlights of this week’s pre-season friendlies and showed that the former England international is still part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans. We asked what other issues you hope the summer schedule may help solve.

Once again the cry of ‘we can’t have them all’ was heard shortly after the community attempted to squeeze all of the players they desired into their 100m-budgeted FPL side. Net Gains is not impressed with some of the player valuations, in particular among the promoted sides, and wonders if the budget could be increased.

FPL also revealed a new Free Hit chip for the coming season. This replaces the much-maligned All Out Attack strategy and offers managers the chance to overhaul their team for one Gameweek. We asked for your ideas for getting the most out of this new addition to the game, with Lateriser12’s suggestion of using it via an expert navigation of the fixture list proving to be among the most intriguing ideas put forward.

Finally, our resident mathematicians have been assessing the optimum underlying statistics to consider when picking players. For Parm expected goals (xG) looks a key indicator of success, and there was further number crunching in Bolivian Seaman’s discussion on statistics that offer genuine value to Fantasy managers.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members’ Tables

Giggs Boson has been busy adding further analysis to Prokoptas’ article on teams that are likely to improve next season. He has been taking a look at those midfielders who really should have scored more in 2016/17, as well as those who had unsustainable and sustainable goal conversion rates.

Meanwhile, resident expert D1asable created this essential table which highlighted those players who had gathered 40+ bonus points in the Sky Sports game.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

QPRUTD has created a special league for the community’s busiest posters during the summer wait for FPL to launch. Full details of the league, which closes for entrants on Monday, can be found here.

Red Lightning also dropped by to tell us that his Top 10K Any Season league (757-400) in FPL is open for those with that high rank at least once in their Fantasy career. He asks for you to list any other leagues for the community to join, which details a Top 100 ID league (97-643) and Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (44937-13340).

Elsewhere, FPL Kangaroo is looking for people to beat him in his mini-league (487-19440).

In Fantasy Eliteserien Colemans Mustard remain top of the FFScout league, but an impressive Gameweek 16 score of 80 puts Sangomango in second place, just six points behind. On Giant’s Shoulders has taken the lead in this the FFScout H2H league.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your FPL back line

Are you looking to play three at the back or more to take advantage of last season's wingback stars?

Do you favour centrebacks with set piece threat and bonus? Or full/wingbacks and their assist potential?

Any fans of an uber defence about? If so which 4.5 defenders would you recommend.

Are the likes of Walker, Milner and the Chelsea lads worth their price tags?

And are their any 4.0 defenders even with a sniff of a start?

I see the stats and I am not saying your wrong I just have big concerns with Liverpool defence. I can see us scoring lots but always conceding at least one a little like city last year. Maybe it will change if we sign a descent cb. I can see Palace scoring bit of a bogey team with tekkers causing is problems. High chance we concede to City arsenal. Then after four games one CS people may sell causing value drop. It's just a theory depending on who Liverpool buy at cb

Yeah that was without champ league distraction and I think with the money teams are stronger in attack. now don't get me wrong iam not just a pesemistic Liverpool fan. I think will have a good season we just have a poor defence but we may get alot of pens with tricky players like lallana Mané and Coutinho in the box so milner fpl asset but needs to assist more

I was hell bent on Milner but the Robertson rumours have put me off.

I'm giving Trippier a chance, joint most assists last season for a defender from a handful of appearances, enough said.

Cedric for fixtures and one of Daniels or Ake. As seen below interested in a decent 4.5 to rotate with these two

3 at the back for me. Cheap and value defenders are more likely to go up in price so have to avoid the premium defenders early doors. Lindelof and Trippier are the ideal premium defenders though, the cheapest premium starters by the looks of it.

Don't have a major issue with playing CB's or full backs. They can do as well as each other but bring different aspects to the table (baps, attacking threat etc).

Don't know of any 4.0 starting defenders so best to stay clear for now.

Built from the back this season.

Currently have a flexible 3 or 4 at the back. The best picks imo are Trippier, Bertrand, Cedric. After that, it's either go big with a Walker/Azpi or go for a rotation. Francis + Dunk look a pretty solid pairing to me.

I'm just picking each player on their individual merits, not focusing on position.

Defence is currently Trippier, Cedric, Darmian, Dunk, 4.0

Yeah I'm getting bored of the way we are tlaking about picking players from specific boxes. Is a wingback better than a CB? DEPENDS ON THE PLAYER! Even FFS representatives perpetuate the myths and damaging off-point narratives.

Currently on on Cedric, Yoshida, Lindelof, Yedlin, Long and go with 4 at back

Considering Lindelof(4-3-3) vs Walters/Fraser(3-4-3), likely to be last minute decision

      Baily-more secure than Lindelof
      Trippier-if Spurs only RB option
      Dunk/Lacselles mix & match
      4.0

Tempted by Walker now actually. If I swap Firmino>Defoe and Pedro>William that gives me a third 6.0m defender straight away..

Going with a back 4. Foster in goal with a Cedric-Yoshida double up cos of prices and fixtures. They're accompanied by Trippier and Lindelof who I think look good value. Allows me to go with a big front three.

I think I'm going to try something different this year as I've never spent much in defence and always paid for it with lousy returns!!

This year I'm tinkering with a revolving 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 3-4-3 system based on fixtures with Milner and Kompany as the building blocks in defence and a couple of 5.0's to mix and match. I figure even if they fall I can swap to big hitters without an early WC so that makes them ideal place holders early doors

Can't see too much value at 4.5 unfortunately.

      So currently on:

Monreal, Cedric, Daniels and Mee (4.0)

Originally planned to have bigger names in defence, but the big-hitters further upfield made this difficult.

For me I need 4 from 5 defenders who:

      1) Will play (i.e. is nailed)
      2) Has attacking threat
      3) Has clean sheet potential
      4) Rotate well with good fixtures if they are not from a top defensive team

The fifth defender is fodder and if a 4.0m option emerges I will transfer them in.

      I have gone with:

      Mawson - Daniels - Dann - Cedric - (Rosenior)

I am monitoring Dann as I have a feeling Martins-Indi will take his place if he signs for Palace.

I'm going with an extreme mix of 2 premiums and 3 ubers.

Trippier - outstanding value at both ends of the pitch. Anyone considered the possibility of Spurs signing another RB as backup for him, not a replacement...

      1. Mavric Marco
        • 11 Years

Lindelöf - not as much of a bap beast as Bailly but a bigger goal threat from corners, maybe even the odd free kick (even though he'll be at least 3rd in line) I've seen guys saying he's not nailed, he definitely is nailed! Much better than Smalling, Jones or Rojo who Jose bought nether of. This is a Mourinho signing, like Bailly was and he's been bought to partner him.

In terms of my 3x 4.0 defenders making the rest of back line, I only need one of them to play. The other 2 can happy sit on the bench for now. With an early WC this issue can be addressed over the first international break.

I've been "well informed" that Liam Rosenior from Brighton is ahead of team mate Bruno for full back who is 36 yrs old.

Goldson (4.0) can also play there and is younger than both Rosenior & Bruno.

Bellerin first name on the team sheet for me.
Trippier & Cedric currently hold a spot, along with a 4m option.

Last spot is either Yedlin (rotating with Cedric) in a 3-4-3; or Lindelof (in a 4-3-3).
For those looking to play RLC as a 4th mid, i'd recommend 4 at the back so that you mitigate the risk.

I'm happy with a defence of Lindelof, Trippier and Cedric. On my bench will be Francis/Naughton rotating well so I'll have a good defensive option ready to come off my bench when needed each gameweek.

Looking at a 3 man defence to start off with, good premium options with form will be hard to scope with preseason so will watch and wait to see if a 4 man backline is on the cards. Currently on Kompany 5.5 UTD def and Cedric.

Starting in a 442 formation with Bellerin, Trippier, Walker & Cedric as starters + 1x 4.5 playing back-up. Possibly saving 1.0 on Walker -> Lindelof but his non-existent attacking output puts me off, also can't see more than 3 cs from the first 7.

Trippier seems obvious - he's by far the bargain

Cedric looks to be the Southampton defender on paper

Lineloff if he can hold his spot

      At the moment I'm on:

      Trippier - Cedric - Bertrand - Kolasinac - (Mee)

But could be Milner over Bertrand. Could end up being 5 at the back with both.

As always, formations are not preset, but depend on the players and prices. Making one change up front could mean the difference between 3 at the back and 5. Even if you're only saving 0.5 or spending 0.5 more.

I keep changing between him and Defoe. It'll be one of those two.

Good point. Even if he doesn't get injured, there's no doubt he'll be rested a lot in the league when Champions league football is about just to be on the safe side

Maybe I think he's more nailed on than Otamendi though. Fpl seems to think so anyway as he's .5 more expensive

Either way I have a bench for the occasional rest. He made such a huge difference to the team when he returned and he seems to have really impressed Pep so he should play most games.

Oh and also I noticed watching him that pep took him off for stones in the 75th min to rest him and avoid in inijury one game which may happen to give stones play time too.

However City did concede almost immediately after yet I kept the clean sheet bonus either way.

    A) Kane Ramsey & Zaha
    B) Lacazette Alli & Tadic

B looks more balanced but Kane is a good captain option
    Rest of team:
    Forster (Elliot)
    Bertrand Dawson Lindelof (Yedlin, 4.0)
    Sané ______ Willian ______ (RLC)
    Lukaku _______ Firmino

If you eliminate Zaha and Tadic, Alli + Lava v Ramsey + Kane is probably a popular conundrum.

Hard to say tbh, I'm trying to choose between them too and at a loss really. Slight risk of Wembley having a dent in Spurs' early performances is maybe a reason to go with Alli over Kane I guess. But really, it shouldn't be

How am I looking with this team; I know it will probably change slightly but I am just trying to get a balance throughout.

    Ramsey Eriksen Tadic Pogba
    Lukaku Kane King

    Subs/Elliott/Mee-Rangel-Loftus -Cheek

Yeah I guess. You've only got one big hitter in midfield though, whereas it's better to have 2.. you're missing a Liverpool and Chelsea player in midfield/attack which might bite you in the ***

I'd appriciate if you'd rate my team out of 10 and give me your preference over these two.
    Forster
    Tripper McAuley Dawson Lindelof
    Coutinho Tadic
    Jesus Lukaku Lacazette
    Bench: Foster Loftus-Cheek Ritchie Mooy
    OR
    Walker McAuley Dawson
    Coutinho Tadic Mooy/Loftus
    Jesus Lukaku Lacazette

    Thanks!

what you think of this team?

    Forster

    Cedric Lindelof Trippier

    coutinho alli sane

    lukaku lacazette benteke

subs: Elliot Dunk Francis Caroll LRC

the idea is to keep the last playing position flexible and choose the one with the best fixture to rotate between 343 and 433.

Like it. Consider Zaha over Benteke (and a 4.5 fwd over Carroll). Gives you 1m to play with

He's a decent risk. Yes, he will be rotated, but good enough value in case he isn't.

I'd personally favour a risk in the 7.0 range

Just trying an alternative to Kane up top. He starts very slowly past few seasons and I'm not sure about Wembley factor.
