Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

IMO, five midfielders are likely to score more than five defenders.

I am referring to the aggregate score. Good luck finding a combination of defenders that can outscore the midfielders in your rival teams.

Last year if you had Alonso Cahill Azpiliueta- you would've smashed someone with mids similarly priced.

Only midfielders priced 7m+. That leaves you short for attackers. On the other hand 5 premium defenders priced 5.5-6.5 leaves you enough for a strong attack.

Coutinho also in the running, but Henderson has taken them when Coutinho and Milner are not on the pitch.

Honest opinion!! How is this team atm!?
I've always been a 343 or sometimes 352. But never a 442. After last season with defenders scoring similar to most midfielders, thought I might try 442 for the first few weeks!!

    Foster

    Luiz bellerin Cedric Trippier

    Alli Ramsey Coutinho Tadic

    Kane Lukaku

Luiz poor option IMO. Bellerin not nailed unless Ox leaves Arsenal.

      How about:

      Foster - Fabianski
      Kolasinac - Cedric - Trippier - Lindelof - Rangel
      Alli - Ramsey - Coutinho - Tadic - RLC
      Kane - Lukaku - Fletcher

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Goalkeepers

What are your latest thoughts on the best goalkeeper combination.

Are you keen on a cheap rotation at 9m - (eg Foster and Begovic/Fabianski)?

Or perhaps an uber cheeap 8.5 set up of Foster and his understudy Myhill, or the Newcastle pair.

Or would you prefer a keep and forget more reliable option at 5.0 or even 5.5?

I searched for 4.5 good keeper. I didn't find. I think wba is a very average team and don't like foster. Maybe defenders for headed goals.
I would love adrian at 4.5 but hart is destroying him. Just wish adrian moves to palace. Currently I have forster

I've been persuaded by the Foster/Myhill combo for value. Every 0.5 is needed and I'm happy to rely on WBA - and save points should they not keep a clean sheet. The only other option is the Newcastle one - which I may still switch to. But given the good 5-5.5 def options and the expensive fwds I have my heart set on 8.5 now.

WBA not always the best for save points. For me Fab is the better of the 4.5s, but I'm going to just have Elliot if he's starting come kick off.

Not really - never fancy spending 5m on a keeper. If there was a decent option at £4m (and Greenwindmill does reckon Elliott is first choice at Newcastle) then I may go for it but I prefer not to break £9m and so it might be a Heaton free zone for me.

Foster/Myhill. Great opening fixtures and rotating hasn't served me well in the past. After the opening fixtures I'll reasses which team offers the best value GK combo. Heaton and his backup served me well last season for minimum cost

I am considering Pickford (EVE) and Elliot (NEW). Something different from the Foster/Fabianski trend. Even though Everton have horrible opening fixtures Pickford has demonstrated he is a save machine. He will have his work cut out for him at season start admittedly but something to ponder before it all kicks off. Your thoughts?

For me it's an uber cheap pair until the first wildcard... It's so difficult to predict which 5.5 goalie will come off better, or which 5.0 will be worth it so I feel it to be safest to spend as little Money as possible until I can spot more cheap midfielder alternatives and switch to a better 5.0 or 5.5 one in 6-8 weeks with the wildcard.

I always go with 4.5-4.5, but this season I opted for Forster-4.0, mainly because of his great opening fixtures, and I expect them to be more solid with Pellegrino. Heaton and/or Foster will definitely be in my team somewhere after GW10.

Foster/Heaton rotation was a disaster from GW1 last year. Ended up playing Heaton everywhere week and selling Foster for Robinson.

I'm going Foster/Myhill for 8.5m, value there as all WBA defenders are 0.5m more.

Currently sat on Foster/Myhill. £8.5m is value - although I'm hoping for a couple more clean sheets from WBA this year.

Also on my radar is Begovic. Bournemouth should improve on the 10 cleans they claimed last year, with Begovic and Ake both arriving from Chelsea.

Last seasons top scorer between the posts is also on my shortlist. With the news that Robinson has retired, should his replacement cost £4.0 I'd be tempted to double down on Burnley goalies.

WBA same team pairing. Means you can have a 4.0 million keeper that will play if we get an injury to Foster.

Same with Naughton/Rangel etc as a right back cheap 4th & 5th defender (Swans have no other right back)

Definitely not going for Heaton. He lost Keane, and these cheap GK prodigies from small teams, like Fabianski a couple back, tend to be a one off. Plus the tail of last year was not very good for him.
I have a feeling Bego will be the value option for this year, but Forster's fixtures are also tempting.

        Foster/Elliott for value

I don't particularly get the 1st choice/reserve option. Why limit yourself on choice? Newcastle will have better fixtures than West Brom on occasion so I will be benching Foster (albeit rarely)?

I have a wildcard for any drastic changes.

I'm just saying why I picked Herrera no one has him and people overlook him but I can see his potential and allows me to get the top scoring FPL player Sanchez which barley anyone has

I don't even have Lukaku, but I 100% believe this huge risk will pay off and put me ahead of the pack.

People have overlooked Sanchez and I'll look to capitalise that every week with him as my captain fixtures permitting

Herrera needs to start in a purple patch like Capoue to be viable. If I'm not mistaken last year it was Capoue -> Allan -> Phillip -> King or something like that.

120 points is irrelevant as Capoue finished on 133 and was not a keeper.
