Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

I like it. Obvs you can reasses Yedlin, Hunemeier should better emerge.

Alli v Kane is a key issue. Either are good to be fair.

That 1m may be needed if Kane goes crazy GWK 1.

    Foster (Coleman)

    McAuley kompany ake (Rangel, yedlin)

    KDB Pogba RLC eriksen (Carroll)

    Jesus Kane king

Was thinking replace eriksen with son after injury and also maybe gundogan for KDB and a good mid for carroll. Also would love to bring in trippier anyone know how?

I've brought in trippier and hunemeier for yedlin and mcauley. Bit of a risk but mcauley is a doubt vs Bournemouth and I think trippier will be a gem- clean sheets bonus and assists galore. Not so comfortable with 2 4.0 defenders but still what's the point in having yedlin if I won't play him? Until someone gets injured I suppose

I'm taking a risk because of Jesus' fixtures and I can't trust arsenal just yet because if Sanchez does leave then it will all change... I feel like it's sometimes good to not just go with what everyone else is. I've always been reluctant who choose arsenal players and I think city will be free scoring

          Daniels, cook, ake, Francis, smith.

Interesting that you say that there may be better at Defoe's price.

      But who exactly?

There's only Benteke (very patchy last season) and Sturridge.

Defoe looks the best of those three to me...at a push I'd put him equal with Benteke at best.

Even below that there are slim pickings.

I like that Defoe gets the recognition but think that to say there are better for the price needs to be qualified. As currently I'm not sure there is a better 8m striker.

I totally disagree. I think MustafI has great scoring potential looking at his stats last season. With Bellerin, Ox and Monreal chucking in the crosses from open play and Ozil from set pieces I think he'll score 4-5 prem goals.
Check out his headed chances last season...its backs up my hunch.

The fee Liverpool are reported to be willing to pay for Keita sums up the madness in the transfer market these days.

You'd think if we are talking about a 65 mill player, he'd be a household name and everyone would have seen him play but he is a relative unknown to most of us.

    1. goriuanx
      • 13 Years

That's because you don't watch the Bundesliga. If you did, you would know just how good he is. 60m for Dier, 50m for Siggy, 50m for Walker.. Keita at 65m is under-priced in comparison to that.

      1. Henry Hill

I live in Leipzig, and watch the side play regularly, so I feel like I have to chime on here:

Naby Keita is the real deal. He may not be a name in your household, but in Germany he is considered one of the hottest prospects in European football. His strength on the ball, his defensive positioning, and his ability to carry it forward and turn defence to attack is unbelievable. In trying to come up with good player comparisons at his age, I'm struggling but I don't think it's hyperbole to say that he could be the next Michael Essien or Patrick Vieira.

If RBL sell him, it will be a sad day. He and Forsberg are the reason I pay to watch them play.

The thought of Keita flanked by Coutinho, playing through-balls to Mane, Salah, and Firmino, is terrifying. For the sake of PL defenders across the nation, I hope that he finishes his career here!

It would be a wonderful sight to see and certainly takes us to the next level. I hope we manage to get Keita over the line, feel like there's twists and turns in this saga yet.

Nice post, Liverpool don't have a great record with big money signings really but in fairness this looks like a proper scouted player rather than a panic buy like Benteke and Carroll.

Every latest transfer just baffles me more with the amount of money being talked about. This summer has gone absolutely mental for spending.

Yeah, I can understand Liverpool fans being nervous. It's a big price tag to pay. But I think Keita is a transcendent player - the like of which there are perhaps only 10 in the PL - that could make a difference to any side.

He was fantastic at Salzburg for two years prior to coming over to Leipzig. I honestly believe there are very few midfields in the world that Keita could not improve, particularly given his trajectory for growth (still only 22).

Lowe I think. Everyone had a go last season, including Mooy who missed, and it took us until the last couple of games to realise that it was probably best to put one of our 5 German players on them.

Lowe took the most recent and he was regular pen taker at Kaiserslautern.

I think you know the answer to this already.
      Your midfield is terrible.
Leic fixtures are really tough. Maybe too much on Komp, Sanc and Vardy?
And is that Leic Simps? Have you seen their fixturs?

Ta, Sanchez clearly affects the midfield but if he gets flogged he's out. Ayew if fit scores goals and plays as a forward, him and peyrera are attacking differentials but need to stay fit. Carroll will play when siggy gets flogged, palace are dreadful so RLC might get some starts but they're clearly bench material. Intend to use Sanchez money to improve midfield if nothing else. Vardy proven and Simpson will warm the bench to start with. What would you suggest doing differently? Ta

Why is everyone going Cedric? He wasn't exactly amazing last season for points when everyone thought he would be. Who gives a shit about attempted assists?

We - the FFS community at large - are exactly the people who care about attempted assists.

If you don't believe that underlying numbers are a useful tool in projecting player performance...you may want to find a new fantasy community.

But he always gets attempted assists and never any actual assists. Southampton can't score so that puts me off him. I just think he's overhyped for what he actually does, still a good option though

He got three last season season. Trippier played barely any games and got five. That's why he's the better option also with clean sheets

When Southampton start put away some of his chances they become assists which are very relevant

Assured of starts, originally had VVD but was .5 dearer. Saints have decent fixtures and are ok at the back. He's picked more here for potential clean sheets than his attacking virtues

      That's nice.
with the keepers I might go Foster/Fabianski or Begovic/Gomes to rotate. And right now Rangel seems as good a 4.0 dump as any. IMO GL

    A) Coutinho + Ritchie + Defoe (9.0 + 6.0 + 8.0)
    B) Zaha + Lanzini + Firmino (7.0 + 7.0 + 8.5)

Which one do you choose? Not only about the player but also the price structure to prepare for price catch..

    Lukaku Lacazette Gayle

Too pricey on the keepers, Milner isn't Daniels or Baines of old. 6.5 is Valencia with fix's

I kinda like Knockaert last time up he took all set pieces. I've got Ayew over Gayle, maybe drop a keeper and upgrade if you intend to play 3rd striker. IMO GL.

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma pictured in Stoke kit ahead of loan move. Does that highten the appeal of Stoke defense?

Under Hughes they have conceded 52, 45, 55 & 56. Not really a defensive manager by the seems of it. So maybe a little but doesn't look trustworthy.

Thinking of going without Kane for the first few, to see how Spurs adapt to Wembley.

    Forster,Myhill
    Lindelof,Dawson,Cedric,Dunk,Mariappa

7 Dunk @ 4.5--can't get with that. And there must be better bottom of the barrell than Marriapa. If Deeney had better fix's I think he's a great price. Think people not doubling SH or MU may regret. IMO GL

      Im with pogbahimovic.
Dunk maybe. Marippa.. defo find a playing 4.0
Deeney I don't think so. I'd prefer Jay Rod for that price looking at fixtures. The rest looks very good. Great coverage of trams.
      Solve those and it's a 8.5
      Right now it's 7.
