Scout Report – Markus Suttner

Brighton and Hove Albion stepped up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Austrian left-back Markus Suttner from German side FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £3.8 million.

The 30-year-old agreed a three-year deal, with Seagulls boss Chris Hughton delighted to secure the services of one of his long-term targets:

“Markus is someone we have been aware of for some time, and I am pleased we have managed to complete the transfer… He has a great level of experience internationally, and in the top divisions in both his native Austria and Germany, where he has played the last two seasons with Ingolstadt, and that experience will serve us well. He will add competition at the back on the left side of defence, and I’m now looking forward to working with him.”

The History

Suttner came through the ranks at Austria Vienna to make his professional debut in October 2008.

He quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back and enjoyed a successful seven-year spell, which included winning the Austrian Cup in 2009 and a league title in 2012/13.

The defender made 260 appearances in all competitions during his time with the club, registering nine goals and 35 assists.

Suttner made the move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2015 and featured 18 times in the Bundesliga during the 2015/16 campaign, although he failed to produce any goals or assists.

But he enjoyed a far more successful campaign last season, personally at least, totalling four goals and five assists from 31 appearances despite Ingolstadt suffering relegation.

Suttner represented Austria at U19 and U20 levels, making seven appearances, before making his senior debut in a 3-1 friendly victory over Finland in February 2012.

He played 20 times for his country before announcing his international retirement earlier this year.

The Prospects

With Gaeten Bong and West Bromwich Albion loanee Sebastien Pocognoli job sharing at left-back position last season, the addition of the experienced Suttner looks a shrewd piece of business by Hughton.

The 30-year-old was part of the Ingolstadt side, alongside fellow summer arrival Pascal Gross, that managed to survive in their first season in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, eventually finishing 11th. Brighton will hope he can share some of those positive experiences over the next nine months.

Suttner’s strengths mainly lie in his attacking threat, with the Austrian a set-piece specialist, something he alluded to when joining the newly promoted side:

“Last season with Ingolstadt we played with a five-man defence. Now we will play with four in the defence so I think I can’t go forward as much, but when I am there I want to score or make a cross and I hope I can help with my set-pieces.”

He will certainly add to the potency of the Seagulls’ attack, although much will depend on how much freedom he is given by Hughton to push forward down the left flank and whether he can wrestle set-piece duties away from Anthony Knockaert.

Suttner is also a competent defender and is reasonably strong in the air for a full-back, standing at 5ft 10in tall.

Looking at his underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 63.65 minutes and produced a key pass every 51.64.

Those are very impressive statistics, bearing in mind that Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso averaged a goal attempt every 58.57 minutes and could only create a chance every 112.25 minutes last term.

In terms of Suttner’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 16.90 minutes amassing an impressive 92 interceptions.

While centre-back Lewis Dunk is expected to be a Bonus Points System (BPS) darling, having averaged a CBI every 7.73 minutes last season, Suttner’s numbers are reasonable for a full-back and, alongside his attacking threat, offer promise regarding his Fantasy potential.

Despite Suttner’s production last term, he arrived in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Monday priced at £4.5m, while over in Sky Sports, he is valued at 5.7, some 1.1 cheaper than Dunk.

That should certainly put Sky managers on alert, while in FPL, Suttner deserves to be considered as an alternative to the identically-priced Dunk.

Hughton’s side were resilient last season, keeping 21 clean sheets. That included 12 at at the Amex Stadium with just 14 goals conceded – a Championship record.

The Seagulls’ early schedule is favourable following their opening weekend visit from Manchester City (lei wat WBA bou NEW). Their home matches certainly catch the eye with West Brom, Newcastle United, Everton, Southampton, Stoke City and Crystal Palace the next six to follow City.

Dunk’s CBI numbers, goal threat from set-plays and 4.5 price tag means he remains the key defensive target to exploit that run. However, Suttner, as a forward-thinking full-back with set-piece duties cannot be overlooked.

Pre-season will be vital in establishing his placing in the pecking order for free-kick duties. Once we are clear on that, we will have a better indication of Suttner’s potential to rival Dunk for our affections.

    RMT
Think I'm finally going to try defense heavy.
So..either 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 for me for the first six weeks.

    Foster
    Alonso, Cahill, Kompany, Trippier, Lindelof

    Ali, Coutinho, Stanislas

    Kane, Jesus

    Myhill, Carroll, LRC, 4.5

So tempted to play 5 at the back but just one goal conceded could hurt a lot.

Chelsea's opening fixtures aren't great so it's unwise to splash so much funds on them when other cheaper options can potentially gain you more returns

problem there for me is premium defender attacking reaturns unpredictable , if you going to go for it something you should stick wth for the whole season its a long term game but something i believe in.

If you want to go heavy at the back go for wingbacks who can potentially give assist pts like Bertrand, Cedric, Kolasinac etc

      Cheers guys.
I'm going for it. Kompany and Cahill have goals and bonus in them. Trippier and Allonso are golden I reckon. And you have to back mourinho for clean sheets long term.

How beneficial do you think Arsenal and Chelsea's 3-4-3 formation are for their wingbacks?

Both teams are solid defensively and by the nature of the formation WBs are essentially wingers.

I have yet to see another team with 3 or 4 of them in it. But I see a lot of questionable 6-6.5 mids/fwds from weaker teams.

Is it because its boring/unusual to play with heavy "defensive" (not really defenders imo) investment? Concern over rotation?
Or am I severely overestimating these WB's value?

Would love to hear peoples thoughts on this..

I think it's because we don't now who's nailed yet. Kolasinac, yes. Alonso, maybe, but no point planning a team around him when not sure, and the others maybe not.

If Bellerin looks nailed I can do Kompany to Bellerin before the season or whenever Kompany's injured, and I'd also consider Chelsea WBs, but there are also good valiue picks elsewhere, as there is every year. And Southampton's fixtures....I can't resist.

Also it seems like a real cause for concern on here that if you don't have 'money in midfield' then you can't adapt and jump on emerging talent. Though I have my problems with this concern, I think that's one factor in the explanation.

          Wenger on Kola:
"What he will give us is the fact that he’s a player who can give assists, who can go forward, who can contribute good crosses.
t’s very important that we have that as well, because we have Kieran Gibbs, we have Nacho Monreal and we have him. But Nacho plays a lot now in central defence and in a three-man system I see him in there.
So overall, I think [Kolasinac] can contribute a lot to help us to be more dangerous going forward.”

I don't see many teams with De Gea in it should I downgrade him to a 4.5 mill and if so who?

    My second keeper is Elliot

Should also I reinvest that 1 mill from De Gea into my defense?

My defense is currently Trippier Ake Cedric Yedlin Mee

Don't let other people's teams dissuade you from what you feel is right. If he doesn't move to Madrid, De Gea could be plugged in and left for the season. That being said, he does tie up another 0.5-1m in your keeper bracket that you might be able to out to good use elsewhere. He also ties up a United player allocation, leaving you just two for outfield, which could be awkward if United really start firing. On the plus side, if you don't think Lindelöf or any of the other 5.5 defenders is nailed, De Gea is the cheapest route into United's defensive returns.

Yes, but completely depends on picking the right 4.5m GK. Whilst there will no doubt be better value cheap goalies, De Gea will end up better value than many of the 4.5m goalies.

a lot of people go back to the safe, tried and tested 3-4-3. and even then, no. of people posting RMT on here is the smallest of fractions compared to actual number of players. 3-4-3 will still be majority formation by a landslide dw about that

352 was pretty successful from what I saw last season.

A lack of options perhaps in the mid price range for midfielders and the rise in prominence of wing back systems seem to be the reason many are choosing a defender over a midfielder in the same range

On the final point: Jesus and/or Lacazette are seen as better value than the 9.0-1.0 midfielders maybe. Likewise Defoe/Benteke seen better than Pogba et al by some. And Aguero, Kane and Lukaku are each seen by different people to be essential. I think you know the answer to the last question is kinda obvious. Lukaku is near 50% ownership due to fixtures and United fans. The options aren't slim this year. There's something for everyone.

The way the wildcards have changed to 1st & 2nd for WC & January window tee's up an early wildcard when the early bargains become known it can be a time to move ahead when others hold the card be patient and go backwards.

When did you play your last season and where did you finish up?

He won despite his early wildcard, not because of it.
His main rival soon overtook him even before playing his own wildcard.
But Matt won by outplaying his rivals in the second half of the season.

Well i do wildcard after during the international break every year. Usually make 0.5 mill in doing so. Also so i can better balance my team. Right now bench is rubbish. Ideally want 2 x 4.5 (or hopefully a 4.0) goalies that I can rotate and 3 x 4.5 defenders that I can rotate.

Whenever I plan on Six weeks chunks it when I do best. My plan I mean I know every transfer I will make and stick to it barring injuries. 3 week planning is too short term imo. But good luck.

Sweet dreams tinkerers. I'll leave you with my 2 drafts.
Let me know which you prefer:

    1)

    Foster,
    Cedric, Daniels, Alonso
    Ramsey, KDB, RLC, Mane
    Jesus, Kane, Lukaku

    2)

    Foster,
    Cedric, Lindelof, Alonso
    Ritchie, KDB, RLC, Mane
    Lacazette, Kane, Defoe

    *Bench on both identical*

I'm leaning towards 2 at the moment, feels more balanced.

    Thanks!

I like your team, too. I may switch Kane and/or Jesus for Lukaku and/or Lacazette. I think man city will score loads at the outset, like last year, more than Man Utd, so I'm inclined to double up there. I also think Kane will be the new Aguero, and the jury is still out in Lacazette (all due respect to random name).

Why are a majority of folks rating Kolasinac and not Bellerin? I've seen a few notes saying that they don't think Bellerin is nailed. I would completely disagree. Kolasinac will be battling Monreal for the left back position. With Kolasinac and Bellerin both being 6.0, I really enjoy the prospect of having a speeding fast wingback (Bellerin) who is proven as my 6.0 defender. Don't like the idea of spending 6.0 on a defender I've never seen play in the EPL. More than to accept the end result of me being wrong, but would like to see reasonable responses why. Also, I don't rate Bellerin going to Barcelona if that is the thought. Not saying it never will happen, but don't think it will be this year (if ever).

Sorry but this is wrong. Kolasinac is nailed at LWB. Google his name and Wenger. Bellerin is not nailed because Ox. If one of them goes, they other will likely be nailed, but they haven't gone yet, so neither are nailed. I'll probably have both if Ox goes before GW1.

Bellerin was on the bench until Ox got injured.

The thinking behind it is that Bellerín has competition for his spot with Oxlade-Chamberlain occupying the right wing-back role last season with Bellerín only deputising because of injury to Ox.

could've just asked why kolasinac over bellerin. everything you wrote afterwards was useless reading tbh and have all been discussed on here multiple times already. i agree with what everyone above has said tho

A simple no would have sufficed

Thanks lads. This seems so odd to me as Ox isn't a natural defender. Appreciate the thoughts (besides Random Name's schrewdness) : )

Certainly. Him to City would kill everyone at City to start with for me.

    I've found it;

    Foster | Elliot
    Trippier | Cedric | Yedlin | Tomkins | Mee
De Bruyne | Alli | Salah | Tadic | RLC
    Lukaku | Jesus | Rodriguez

Anyone know if Tomkins is nailed with that new chap coming in today? Can he play anywhere across the back?

Nice team, maybe downgrade Tomkins to 4.0 and gets Gayle instead of Rodriguez?
