Scout Report – Markus Suttner

Brighton and Hove Albion stepped up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Austrian left-back Markus Suttner from German side FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £3.8 million.

The 30-year-old agreed a three-year deal, with Seagulls boss Chris Hughton delighted to secure the services of one of his long-term targets:

“Markus is someone we have been aware of for some time, and I am pleased we have managed to complete the transfer… He has a great level of experience internationally, and in the top divisions in both his native Austria and Germany, where he has played the last two seasons with Ingolstadt, and that experience will serve us well. He will add competition at the back on the left side of defence, and I’m now looking forward to working with him.”

The History

Suttner came through the ranks at Austria Vienna to make his professional debut in October 2008.

He quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back and enjoyed a successful seven-year spell, which included winning the Austrian Cup in 2009 and a league title in 2012/13.

The defender made 260 appearances in all competitions during his time with the club, registering nine goals and 35 assists.

Suttner made the move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2015 and featured 18 times in the Bundesliga during the 2015/16 campaign, although he failed to produce any goals or assists.

But he enjoyed a far more successful campaign last season, personally at least, totalling four goals and five assists from 31 appearances despite Ingolstadt suffering relegation.

Suttner represented Austria at U19 and U20 levels, making seven appearances, before making his senior debut in a 3-1 friendly victory over Finland in February 2012.

He played 20 times for his country before announcing his international retirement earlier this year.

The Prospects

With Gaeten Bong and West Bromwich Albion loanee Sebastien Pocognoli job sharing at left-back position last season, the addition of the experienced Suttner looks a shrewd piece of business by Hughton.

The 30-year-old was part of the Ingolstadt side, alongside fellow summer arrival Pascal Gross, that managed to survive in their first season in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, eventually finishing 11th. Brighton will hope he can share some of those positive experiences over the next nine months.

Suttner’s strengths mainly lie in his attacking threat, with the Austrian a set-piece specialist, something he alluded to when joining the newly promoted side:

“Last season with Ingolstadt we played with a five-man defence. Now we will play with four in the defence so I think I can’t go forward as much, but when I am there I want to score or make a cross and I hope I can help with my set-pieces.”

He will certainly add to the potency of the Seagulls’ attack, although much will depend on how much freedom he is given by Hughton to push forward down the left flank and whether he can wrestle set-piece duties away from Anthony Knockaert.

Suttner is also a competent defender and is reasonably strong in the air for a full-back, standing at 5ft 10in tall.

Looking at his underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 63.65 minutes and produced a key pass every 51.64.

Those are very impressive statistics, bearing in mind that Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso averaged a goal attempt every 58.57 minutes and could only create a chance every 112.25 minutes last term.

In terms of Suttner’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 16.90 minutes amassing an impressive 92 interceptions.

While centre-back Lewis Dunk is expected to be a Bonus Points System (BPS) darling, having averaged a CBI every 7.73 minutes last season, Suttner’s numbers are reasonable for a full-back and, alongside his attacking threat, offer promise regarding his Fantasy potential.

Despite Suttner’s production last term, he arrived in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Monday priced at £4.5m, while over in Sky Sports, he is valued at 5.7, some 1.1 cheaper than Dunk.

That should certainly put Sky managers on alert, while in FPL, Suttner deserves to be considered as an alternative to the identically-priced Dunk.

Hughton’s side were resilient last season, keeping 21 clean sheets. That included 12 at at the Amex Stadium with just 14 goals conceded – a Championship record.

The Seagulls’ early schedule is favourable following their opening weekend visit from Manchester City (lei wat WBA bou NEW). Their home matches certainly catch the eye with West Brom, Newcastle United, Everton, Southampton, Stoke City and Crystal Palace the next six to follow City.

Dunk’s CBI numbers, goal threat from set-plays and 4.5 price tag means he remains the key defensive target to exploit that run. However, Suttner, as a forward-thinking full-back with set-piece duties cannot be overlooked.

Pre-season will be vital in establishing his placing in the pecking order for free-kick duties. Once we are clear on that, we will have a better indication of Suttner’s potential to rival Dunk for our affections.

          Still it's quite possible that

          a) Palace have a poor run of form at the start of the season

I am curious about the lack of love for Milner. He will play even if Robertson comes. Robertson is a replacement for Moreno. He is not the big money signing that has to start.

If Milner had been classified as a defender last season he would have got close to 180 points. And that is when Liverpool only kept 12 clean sheets and 7 or 8 pens. And Milners goals came from pens which will be there again this season, so its not as big a variable as open play goals. He also takes some of the corners and indirect free kicks. So again, a few assists will be there as well.

Just like to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Yup. He'd be a good pick as a 6.5 mid. As a defender? No brainer.

Had him in all my original drafts, but still feel he's half a million-
to a million too much. Could be worth every penny of his 6.5M pricetag if he delivers and Liverpool register the shut-outs.

Hoping for non-FPL reasons that Robertson is LB and Milner is centre mid.

For FPL purposes Robertson is a better footballer than a defender. Can be very good on the front foot but not so CS friendly at Pool. If they signed VVD that might improve.

Meh. I don't think you can rely on penalty goals. 7 is a very high number. It will almost certainly be lower this year. Milner is not young enough to play PL and Champions League, at least not a demanding position as fullback. He will surely be rotated.

Good balanced team with a couple of good captaincy choices. Lacazette might not hit the ground running but its a good bet. Easily changeable someone else if not.

I personally am going with more in defence and less in midfield as I think there is value this season in wing backs and full backs, but this could easily work as well.

You would have to go into the minds of the owners and see why they are picking him.

They think the player might be a starter > They'll drop him once they realize he will not start > Likely to drop quickly.

They want the player for budget restrictions > They'll drop him once they see an option in their price range > Fairly neutral to price change.

They don't have to knowledge to put together a full starting line up > They'll likely be dead teams > The dead ownership will make it harder for the player to drop.

Someone like Fletcher and RLC will drop quickly if they don't start, as many think these players are plausible starters. Going by low ownership on other players aren't necessarily a good idea. Many others might use the same strategy, and those with a strategy are likely not dead teams, hence quicker price drops.

    A few things I don't understand

    - Overestimating Man U. United were dire last season by their own standards and had trouble scoring and winning. Lukaku for Ibra actually weakens them. I'm just not so sure a Mourinho United team warrants paying £11.5m for a bloated pricetag forward even with the nice fixtures.
    - Why are people choosing Rooney? it's like they have 3 or 4 years of football amnesia. The guy has completely lost it and physically out of shape. I wouldn't buy him if he was £5.5m
    - Ignoring the fact that Spurs won't be playing WHL this season which is where they really mashed up the opposition. This is a big factor imo so i will 100% be holding off on Kane who is a traditionally slow starter anyway. Alli and Eriksen have been priced temptingly though.
    - Ignoring City attacking assets. I've read so many times that "they will share the points" Wtf does this even mean, you know well Jesus, Aguero, KDB, Sane, Silva(s) will be hauling an impressive amount week to week. I'd sooner pick a Jesus or Aguero in a team scoring 3 or 4 per game than a Lukaku in a team scoring 1 or 2.
    - Buying Kyle Walker as a £6.5m City defender. Anything over 5.5m is overpaying for that defence imo. The man has a Spurs defensive pricetag, if the game had launched a week later he would be £6m tops. People seem obsessed with new signings, ala Rooney.

Agree with you on most points, especially the first. But the whole Wembley thing for Spurs is bogus. The more who believe it the better for me tbh and Kane didnt score much last two seasons, but you can't ignore his form towards the end of last season why wouldn't it translate over?

West Ham didn't have the most goals scored, least goals conceded or Pochettino the year before. We played badly in Champions League around a period of injuries. In the 4-2 cup loss to Chelsea Spurs were the better side and played very good football, if they play like that this season at home I don't see a decline.

Most teams have struggled when moving to a new home over the past decade or so. It's a real phenomenon. Maybe the fact that Spurs played some of their European games at Wembley will help, but a drop in home dominance would not surprise me in the least.
Kane is still in my team, mind.

Their Wembley performance mostly impacted by pitch size, more spaces to cover with their pressing.

        http://www.squawka.com/news/how-tottenham-must-adapt-to-the-size-of-the-wembley-pitch-if-they-are-to-continue-developing-next-season/937074#9AMyszv48oW3SFII.97

Carefully assessing if Poch has plan B to play in larger pitch for this season, might be wiser.
Would like to see their transfer activity first as well.

Spurs seemed to cope okay with that.

There is a certain degree of logic to each point but not a clear as you think.
Show us the draft team based on these points 🙂

Rooney I could not agree more on.

And yes I am tempted by a double up City attack.

Lots have Lukaku purely due to ownership levels

Spurs is the hardest one to call . We can say Kane starts slowly and they will not play as well at temporary home but the only thing definite about these points is that they are assumptions.

Hard to resist the second highest scoring forward, when he's moved to a better team and has great early fixtures. His record against West Ham too makes him a great week one captaincy option

That record of scoring against the same team is basically indicative of nothing. Lukaku blanked against West Ham last season. Just saying.

Your Rooney point is as ignorant as everything the fake news media says about him.

United have been dire in general Rooney was the 8th fastest footballer in the world in 2016.

LVG and Mourinho ruined a lot of players careers and once they left they did much better. Look at KDB and Lukaku under Mourinho. And what LVG did to RVP and the rest of the United squad.

Koeman will bring out the best in Rooney his 30 yard goal is proof he's still one of the best finishers in the world. Known for his composure.

Rooney was at 20.5% ownership last I checked with a figure only expected to rise.

Feel free to ignore a stirker for Everton in an attacking system who is extremely likely to be on free kicks and penalties.

Kyle Walker had his highest points toll ever.

Lukaku is inflated agreed. You don't follow the herd but you have to keep tabs on them.

Kane is a monster regardless but I see your point.

Rooney maybe over the hill but if you follow the NBA this is like LeBron James going back to Cleveland. Don't underestimate the power of coming home!

      - Man U greatly underperformed last season relative to their xG. That is likely to revert to the mean this season. They have a central attacker who has consistently banged goals in for Everton who is now the spear head of a team that creates chances like crazy. Clearly you shouldn't get one of their mids, but Lukaku and Valencia (with other nailed defenders a bit further behind) are quality prospects.

-You're focussing on your opinion of Rooney rather than what he is. He is a lethal finisher, if he gets put in the opposition's box and gets plenty of service, I genuinely see him getting fairly good returns. For that price, he's excellent value.

      - I agree with this point- Kane is too expensive relative to the other players and the WHL->Wembley could prove to have a big impact, as other teams that have moved stadiums have previously found out.

      - I don't think many are ignoring City attacking assets, plenty of Jesus, KDB, Aguero and Sanes about in RMTs. We know they're class- but who will play consistently? Is KDB worth 10.0 if he gets benched every 5 games for example?

      - You need to see wingbacks as what they are, wingers that pick up clean sheet points. In attacking team like City with a quality player like Walker- the points returns could be huge. Alonso and Valencia put in over 100 crosses each last season, while picking up clean sheets. You would have thought that Pep has identified being leaky at the back as an issue that needs to be worked on. 6.5 for an OOP in a quality City attack is a bargain.

People seem to forget Man united created lots of chances and played good fotball, they just couldnt convert those chances. They won 2 titles. A stat around x-mas showed that United was one of the teams in Europe creating the most chances. Fotball is marginal, and Pogba alone hit the post 9 times. Im sure they will score more goals this season, I believe especially Mikky will step up.

The issue for me isn't them scoring goals.

It's what they do once they score them.

Mourinho typically shuts it down if they have, say, a 2-0 lead and goes defensive. Teams like Pool, City, Spurs and to an extent Arsenal will just keep trying to score more.

My fear with Lukaku isn't that he won't score goals but that the defensive nature of Mou will kick in once he's got one.

I don't think ManU create chances like crazy... Otherwise they wouldn't had so many draws last season.

Agree on rooney, will monitor him. Great value.

Kane is on penalties & sometimes take free kicks. But 3m is huge. I had alli for now but afraid i cant buy back kane. Way too many fwd options this year.

I can only see kun & jesus nailed in city attack.

Walker is not worth the price. Milner & azpi is ahead him IMO.
& I would rather have kompany for city cover rather than him.

      Looks good to me.
Look at the last few seasons what has Clyne delivered from an attacking point of view - Lindleof or many other better 5.5 options I think.

Ake could be a good punt but with mixed fixtures Cedric might be better at 5.

All down to opinions just my suggestions 🙂
