Moving Target – Joe Hart

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart on a season-long loan, with the Hammers reportedly paying a loan fee of £4.5 million to secure the services of the England international.

Speaking about the capture, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic expressed his happiness at being able to attract a player of his pedigree to the club, while also explaining the importance of improving the level of competition in the squad:

“He is the England number one, he has great experience but, at 30-years-old, he is still in his prime as a goalkeeper and can be at the top of his game in the next few years… I said a few days ago that we wanted to sign players who are going to improve our starting eleven. But that doesn’t mean that they walk straight into the team. It means that they improve the level of competition for those places.”

The History

Hart started out at his hometown club Shrewsbury Town, making his debut in April 2004 at the age of 17.

He became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2005/06 season and was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year before securing a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2006.

Hart took in loan spells at Tranmere Rovers and Blackpool before spending the 2009/10 campaign on a season-long loan at Premier League outfit Birmingham City, making 36 appearances.

He returned to the Etihad in the summer of 2010 ready to take the starting spot in goal and was an ever-present, keeping an impressive 18 clean sheets.

Over the next few years, Hart became a vital member of a hugely successful City side, winning two league titles in 2012 and 2014, along with two League Cups and one FA Cup.

But he immediately fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola last summer and was shipped out on a season-long loan to Italian side Torino, where he managed just five shut-outs in 36 matches, conceding 62 goals.

Hart represented England six times at U19 level before making 21 appearances for the U21s.

He was handed his senior debut in a 3-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in June 2008 and has racked up an impressive 71 caps for his country.

The Prospects

Both Adrian and Darren Randolph shared playing time in goal for the Hammers last season, but the addition of Hart is expected to provide stability in the goalkeeping position.

Speaking about the switch to the London Stadium, Hart revealed the opportunity to play regular first-team football was the key factor behind the move:

“It’s important for me to play football and to get the opportunity to come here and play is absolutely awesome.”

With the FIFA World Cup on the horizon next summer, Hart knows he needs to be playing week in week out, with the likes of Stoke City’s Jack Butland, Burnley’s Tom Heaton and Everton’s Jordan Pickford all pushing to be England’s No 1.

He should start the season as the first-choice stopper at West Ham then, with Adrian and Randolph already the subject of speculation regarding possible exits.

Hart’s underlying statistics from the last two seasons have been pretty underwhelming, however.

He had a save rate of just 64% and made six errors which led to goals.

Adrian boasted a save rate of 71.03% over the same period, making just three errors, although Randolph was less impressive (60.32% save rate and five errors).

Hart’s statistics are certainly a concern, although a return to the Premier League could help spark an improvement.

He did also make a save every 31.15 minutes last season – considerably better than in 2015/16 with City (43.80) – and in another team expected to be battling in mid-table, his save potential should increase and further boost his appeal.

Despite enduring a difficult season last term, eventually finishing 11th, Bilic’s side still managed to keep a reasonable 10 clean sheets, with eight of those coming at home.

And in 2015/16, they produced 11 shut-outs, so the West Ham defence could prove to be a decent source of defensive returns again this season.

While Hart was originally added as a Manchester City asset and priced at 7.3 in Sky Sports, he was absent from the original Fantasy Premier League (FPL) listing.

Adrian and Randolph have both been valued at 4.5 this season, so there is surely a strong case for Hart to arrive at the same price.

That would, of course, make the England international ideal for a rotation pairing.

Watford provide a rotation partner for West Ham this season. But the Hammers’ Gameweek 2 fixture against Southampton has been reversed while the London Stadium is used for the 2017 World Athletics Championships, so they only rotate home and away for 36 of the 38 Gameweeks.

Nevertheless, a Hart/Heurelho Gomes pairing would still provide a pretty strong run of fixtures (LIV, bou/sot, BHA, HUD, wba, swa, SWA, brn, BHA, STO) during the opening months of the season.

Swansea City’s Lukasz Fabianski and West Bromwich Albion’s Ben Foster are other 4.5 goalkeepers who could work alongside Hart in a 9.0 pairing, with the pair’s fixtures generally working well in conjunction with the West Ham stopper.

While Hart’s form in Italy was slightly disappointing, he does remain an exceptional goalkeeper, and one that should boost the prospects of the Hammers’ backline.

To get a stopper of his calibre for 4.5 in FPL would represent excellent value and is likely to see him feature in many FPL squads come Gameweek 1.

Former team-mate Pablo Zabaleta has also joined over the summer, so there’s no shortage of experience at the back for West Ham, with Jose Fonte, Winston Reid and Aaron Cresswell all proven Premier League performers.

Hart looks set to move towards the top of our shopping lists providing he comes in at 4.5 then, potentially offering the cheapest route into a Hammers backline that offers a fairly reliable source of defensive returns – particularly at home.

I am slightly worried with Coutinho through fear of rotation but at the same time scared of not owning Lacazette if he's off to a flyer and lukaku due to ownership I can't see past so not sure who I'd upgrade from there. Tough game this.

Honestly I haven't had much luck in 3 big fowards and filling out a worthwhile line up. Not sure I will even consider 5-2-3. I would need to downgrade my defenders to 5.0 and 5.5, currently have two 6.5 and a 6.0. I would also have to lose my 9.0 midfielder and go with a string of 5 midfielders at 6.0 to make three at the top work. Not sure I want that big of a risk, I feel going 5-3-2 is risky enough with rotation playing a big factor in the midfield.

Why should their prices change? I'll get a 8.5m Firmino as mid and 7.5m King. In fact I actually do have Firmino in my team right now.

Firmino is understandable. King should definitely not be a forward though. He is a shadow striker.

Last season he played 13 as centre forward and 13 as secondary striker. 8 on wings and 1 as attacking mid. Easy forward classification.

20 to 18 wasn't enough to push it and Lacazette, Welbeck and Giroud are likely ahead of him. Main position is stated as left wing whereas the other two are stated as secondary strikers.

Sanchez started more than half of his league appearances as a CF last season. Also, the Laca argument is rubbish. Defoe?

20 to 18 wasn't enough and things are very different to last season.

But that was at the start of the season. Things changed in the second half and Sanchez was played on the wing. No reason to change him to a forward.

And how is that an easy forward classification? What exactly is the definition of a forward in fpl? There is a definitely an argument that secondary striker = attacking mid.

Attacking mid and secondary striker are 2 totally different positions.
Hazard is an attacking mid (27 games), left wing (7 games) centre forward (2 games).

I'm guessing you are just looking at transfermarkt

Well, that is not very accurate. Modern football tactics are a lot more flexible. For example with Spurs, you will see that Alli very often plays as the furthest man forward when Spurs have the ball as Kane drops a bit deeper. of I couldn't think a better way to describe his role than shadow striker. But transfermarkt say he is an AM. It's all pretty subjective tbh.

Did you expect Alli to be a forward in FPL. If no, then it's hardly subjective.

This. Bournemouth played a 4-4-2 last season. So it seems the towers can correctly identify the difference between a midfielder and a forward. Fair play to 'em.

Didn't Howe himself say King played up top? Tbh you lost me when you said attacking mid is the same as SS. Don't buy that one, there are clear differences for me.

Özil, Hamšik, & Marco Fabián are attacking mids (or classic 10s if you must). Players who would never be considered as forwards...

Osako, Yussuf Poulsen & King are forwards (support strikers).

Defoe probably dents King's appeal but common sense was needed. The towers got it bang-on based on last season IMO. Don't get the bitterness over the decision at all.

Potentially lucrative though, Richie got a respectable 4 goals and 8 assists last time, J.Rod has a good history and Ince scored quite a few goals in the championship. May switch Salah to Coutinho but I'm quite worried about an assist the assister trend setting in.

Interested to hear people's feedback on today's pre-season games on the following (the last point is more a statement than a query!

    1) Did Salah look as good as people are making out? (Namely mentioned on Twitter for his pace and ability to look to create.)

    2) How did Zaha do despite Palace not scoring?

    3) How did Kolasinac get on in the wing-back role?

    4) Is Jay Rod worth considering?

    5) Ramsey looks like he's going to continue to flourish in Arsenal's new system. Staying well put in the centre of my 352.

      2) Lively, we had to triple and double up to stop him, sometimes unsuccessfully, one thing not in doubt is his ability to dribble

Can't be 100% without Mane being on the pitch but as of now it's looking like he'll be playing on the right of the front three, hasn't been played on the left at all. Tough call, Coutinho is quality with high ownership but could he end up assisting the assister, Salah unproven in the prem but has the potential to outscore Coutinho if he can replicate his Serie A performances in the prem, as of now I'm going Salah with a wc in hand if he and my other risks don't pay off after 7 or so gameweeks.

Mane and Salah will push cout to a cm in a 433. Cout will still be on dead balls and can be just as good in cm though. I find Salah a little wasteful at times so Mane is the only one for me

Not sure it's that simple. Coutinho won't be as far forward but he'll have even more of the ball and it won't affect his habit of long range efforts on goal. Coutinho was driving from deeper with the ball instead of cutting in from the left.

      1) No
      2) Lively
      3) Didn't see it
      4) Yes, but WBA probably won't be scoring enough
      5) Yeah, I'd say he's decent value tbh - can't expect 10+ points every week at that price

      1. Jsadler95

If you truly think no to 1) then you clearly haven't watched the Wigan and Palace games, so at that point your opinion of it becomes invalid.

    7. Jsadler95
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

      1) Salah looks great, very fast and understands how to play with the Liverpool forwards. Both today and against Wigan he looked the part. I'd have him just above Coutinho currently purely because Coutinho will likely play deeper, but Coutinho was Liverpools best player today.

      2) Zaha looks very good, definitely a good value buy at 7.0. Expect him to do well under De Boer and was probably Palace's best player today as well.

      3) Kolasinac had a bit of an issue today, but I'd ignore the blip today, he's still very valuable in the wing back role at 6.0.

      4) I personally think so, but he's a big risk at the same time. I'd say if you can squeeze an extra 0.5 from somewhere you're better off with Gayle or Austin, but I'd keep an eye on Austin as Gabbiadini could sneak away his game time.

      5) Ramsey is a great player but for 7 I'd go Zaha myself just for now.

    Bring Back A Legend Chip?

If I had my way, I would like to devise a chip, where you get pick any player from an 11 v 11 side, plus subs, a team of Premier League legends playing against each other that would be simulated on FIFA, or a Football Manager type game. Each week, the teams would play each other and points would be calculated just as they are in real life now, and you'd get the points of ONE of those players you choose, who could come in as either part of your team for your usual Fantasy Week, or even as a 12th Man.

Example, Schmeical, Neville, Adams, Desailly, A.Cole, Vieira, Scholes, Ronaldo, Di Canio, Henry, Shearer would be one team, all their stats and attributes entered into FIFA or Football Manager (Create a player) and they face off over say 10 minute halves vs another Premier League legend team. Shearer scores 2 and gets MOM, so gets you 13 points or Neville gets a Clean Sheet and assist and gets you 9, or Di Canio gets sent off within 10 minutes for crushing Bergkamps leg, -2.

Each week you could broadcast the Legends match live on youtube, and to make it more interesting you could bring in different legends or cult players now and then.

    Just a bit of fun.

B, but only as Fletcher doesn't seem likely to get many minutes over the season. Expect to see Lanzini playing an advanced role with either Arnautovic or Carroll. If Hernandez signs, this also limits Fletcher's appeal.

RLC's role is uncertain too at present, but if he's just bench-fodder, then it doesn't really matter.

Rodriguez could prove a nice little surprise if he avoids injury, too. Always felt he's never been afforded a clear run of fitness to fulfil his potential.

I just don't see Ramsey playing weekly, but more of a spot player. Many are high on him based off the end of last season, some good stats to finish the year, but I feel there are other options that will see more pitch time and contribute. Ritchie is one of them, Knockaert another. Ince is a third, Phillips, depending on fixtures, Shaqiri, again based on fixtures and has dead ball duties.

  22. Mr. O'Connell

    Foster
    Trippier, Lindelof, Cedric
    KDB, Ozil, Coutinho, JWP, RLC

    Myhill, Tomkins, 4.5, 4.0

If I can get used to a gash bench and one of Tomkins/RLC playing every week then I guess it's alright. Plenty of set piece duties in midfield, attacking full backs and those 2 up top should get pens.

Which player is currently the biggest trap on FPL? My money is on Pogba. Potentially just a very expensive DM in a Maureen team that doesn't like to attack. A FSS pre-season bandwagon, so a lot of knowledgeable owners who will be quick to get rid of he disappoints. He's also at the same price point as Mikhi who if he starts well could siphon off a lot owners very quickly (not to mention Martial and Rashford). RLC would be my second choice.

    Who's yours?

Pogba certainly could be what you describe. I'm going nowhere near.

RLC will probably be 4.4 by GW3.

Pogba I think is a good option and probably same as mikhi also easy swap so for the right one so no I don't think there a trap at all. I agree rlc feels a little wrong do recall losing value on 4.5 multiple times he's probably a trap as a starter but not a bad bench option even is he goes 4.4

JRod, Trippier and RLC are my top 3 right now.

Good call on Trippier. His first 2 matches are new, CHE so it's unlikely he will increase in price early. I think he'll do well but i'm tempted to wait 2 weeks in case Spurs sign Pereira. Poch likes to rotate his wing backs.

City look to be a complete rotation nightmare FPL wise. I currently have Sané but his minutes are already a worry.

LWB, Monreal was LCB. Kolasinac was shocking but ill, taken off before HT.
