Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

Worth downgrading Redmond to 5.5 and Fabianski (2nd) to Elliot in order to upgrade Pogba to Alli/Salah/Mane?

You've obviously made the choice to go with three big hitters up top and than means RLC starting. That's the downside. You either like that plan or you don't. I personally don't as he may not even start. And your bench is also adversely affected.

The premium front men are v appealing, but not sure having 3 of them is a net positive.

I'd say yes considering half the game nearly have kaku. Be very hard to get him in if he goes off red hot in his first few games.

Mkhi could be a very lovely differential in the opening weeks. Think he will start and has looked very sharp in United's two friendlies so far playing just off a front pair or solo striker. At 8.0 think he's a far better option than Pogba if they both start.

My worry with Pogba is that he'll never be a Fantasy big hitter. Think he could put up 10 goals, 10 assists or so this season, but they'll be sporadic and he plays too far away from the goal (even in a 3 man midfield). Mkhi has history for loads of goals and assists when on form.

Good points, but the signing of Lukaku could be a gamechanger for Pogba. But like I said, I'll consider Mkhi.

Hope so. Pogba created so many chances last season etc, just worry the hype about him being a monster Fantasy asset may be too much. Good luck with the season.

Lovely side, but the issue is obvious. Midfield suffers too much from 3 big hitters for me. If they all fire, you're golden. If they don't you're counting on Matt Phillips and Carroll a bit too much for me. You may be happy with that risk, not saying it's wrong, but that's the glaring point.

Season Ticker. Game ratings. Look at Liverpool's. 🙂

They may not be "accurate", but they are all assessed by the same algorithm, designed by me. Based on league position, no. of wins, no. of draws, goals for, goals against. HOME and away.

I claim that it is a fairer, or more "accurate" 😉 assessment than the FFS Ticker. 😀

Nothing actually tangible in the numbers, I'm working on a ticker that provides an indication of which teams are likely to fare well in which games - bigger the number, better the chances.

Doosra has been doing it for years which is what his numbers are all about. I've been tinkering for a while and will continue to do so but it's not accurate and it's just a bit of fun really. Almost definitely better off just using your common sense and judgment 🙂

The question is though, WHO from Liverpool?

I can't see much of a difference between Cout, Salah, Mane and Firmino. And even Wijn and Studge might pop in with the occasional goal. I think I'll just frustrate myself by picking the wrong player. Safest option is possibly Milner as all of these players eventually will be taken down in the penalty box.. 😛

Coq and Xhaka together is strangely defensive from Wenger.

I wonder is Welbeck will be behind Laca, or if it's two up front with just Ozil in behind.

With KDB I think Aguero is an unnecessary rotation risk. I'd go Kane or Lacca. Also prefer cahil to azpi and anyone to holding.

      Thoughts on mine above?

You don't think Aguero is nailed? I just think for 11.5 that is amazing value. It's Aguero. I like Cahill but Azpi is more attacking especially if he plays wing-back and both are 6.5
Holding is there for Arsenal clean sheets, I'm 0.5 short of Monreal.

Mee is bench fodder and won't start but you're right, those opening fixtures are horrible, however the 3/6 of those games are at home to WBA, Palace and Hudds. Burnley at home tend to not concede.

I'm waiting on Holding's nailedness, he certainly looked good end of last season. If not then I need to find 0.5 for Monreal. I feel I need Arsenal clean sheet cover.

That's the move, Monreal easily had most minutes for ARS. Burnley only had Heaton keep up to the shelling, not that many CS's. IMO GL

Thanks mate, no Spurs cover is a concern but there's the Wembley factor to consider and Kane's historic slow starts. Ideally I would have Alli - so if Kevin isn't performing it's a doable FT.

Good morning, my dear fellows, I hope this post finds you in rude health and not hiding under your grotty bedsheets due to the fear of thunder, like the Krauts when they hear her Majesty's boys are on their way!

    I found this interesting:
    3 EPL defenders created more chances than Kyle Walker last season (39); N.Clyne (45), L.Baines (46) and J.Milner (57).
    - Opta

For Mr. Clyne that seems good as the other 2 are on some set pieces.

A jolly good chap I know and spiffing gent came up with some good intel BACK IN MAY on the impact of fullbacks. I thought I’d share it with you as a means of me giving back to the poor: ‘If you look at assists, Whoscored have credited 122 players making 1,238 full back appearances (starts) so far this season. Collectively they have played 107,852 minutes PL football, the equivalent of 1,198 90 minute matches. Teams like Chelsea figure lowly in these stats because they haven't used full backs for most of the season.

From these 1,238 appearances fullbacks have provided a grand total of 78 assists and 46 goals, 7 of which are Milner penalties! In fact, take set piece goals out and fullbacks have scored just 25 open play goals all season.

The top 6 teams account for 24 out of the 78 assists which is 30.7% of the assists from 30% of the teams, so the top6 team's fullbacks do very slightly better than average, even accounting for Chelsea's lack of full backs (take Chelsea out and the other 5 produce the 31.7% of assists from 25% of the teams, Chelsea have 0 fullback assists).

Looking at each team and their fullback's assist achievements we get (remember this is a player’s achievements when playing at fullback, it does not count achievements playing in a different position):

ManU (7 assists, 1 goal, 1 goal open play from 70 appearances)

    Valencia - 3
    Blind - 2
    Young - 1
    Shaw - 1
    Darmian - 0
    Rojo - 0
    Bailly - 0

LFC (6 assists, 7 goals, 0 goals open play from 72 appearances)

    Milner - 3
    Clyne - 2
    Moreno - 1
    TAA - 0

Spurs (6 assists, 2 goals, 2 goals open play from 48 appearances)

    Walker - 3
    Rose - 1
    Trippier - 1
    Wimmer - 1
    Davies - 0
    Vertonghen - 0

Arsenal (4 assists, 0 goals, 0 goals open play from 60 appearances)

    Monreal - 2
    Bellerin - 1
    Gibbs - 1
    Jenkinson - 0
    Paulista - 0
    Debuchy - 0

ManC (1 assist, 2 goals, 2 goals open play from 60 appearances)

    Sagna - 1
    Kolarov - 0
    Zabaletta - 0
    Clichy - 0
    Fernandinho - 0
    Fernando - 0
    Navas - 0

Chelsea (0 assists, 0 goals, 0 goals open play from 14 appearances)

    Alonso - 0
    Pedro - 0
    Ivanovic - 0
    Azpilicueta - 0

If you compare, say, LFCto their top6 rivals - even if you exclude Milner's 7 penalty goals - they have 6 assists from open play, though no goals. ManU have 7 assists and 1 goals, Spurs 6 assists and 2 goals. So LFC are only 1 or 2 goals/assists worse off.

The only fullbacks that have done appreciably better from other teams are:

    Coleman: 4 goals, 3 assists
    Bertrand: 2 goals, 4 assists
Adam Smith: 1 goals, 5 assists
Daniels: 4 goals, 3 assists, though 3 goals from free kicks
Fuchs: 2 goals, 4 assists, though 1 goal and 1 assist is from free kicks
Holebas: 2 goals, 4 assists, though 2 assists are from free kicks
Dawson: 4 goals, 0 assists, though 3 goals from free kicks

Daniels and Smith are two that have made the biggest impact and they are both from Bournemouth. Take out set piece impact (Milner has 7 set piece goals) and their collective output is 2 goals and 10 assists (Francis and Frazer are also credited 1 assists apiece from fullback). LFC's fullbacks have 6 assists, so at very best they might be 2 goals and 4 assists better.

Contrast that to a striker. LFC strikers (Firmino, Sturridge and Origi) are credited with 11 goals (6,1,4 respectively) and 8 assists (5,1,2 respectively) from 36 appearances. Compare that to:

    - Chelsea: 20 goals and 7 assists from 34 appearances
    - Spurs: 23 goals and 7 assists from 37 appearances
    - ManU: 19 goals and 6 assists from 37 appearances
    - ManC: 24 goals and 5 assists from 37 appearances
    - Arsenal: 19 goals and 8 assists from 34 appearances
    - Everton: 25 goals and 7 assists from 42 appearances

By that measure LFC are 8 to 14 (average 11) goals worse off and 0 to 3 (average 1.3) assists better off. Overall that's about 10 goals worse off from striker position than out top 7 rivals, just from the position of generally 1 striker (only Everton have played 2 strikers more than twice).’

So, gentlemen, what I gather from this little yarn is that a Lukaku, Kane and Jesus/Aquero front 3 would be lovely, with a back 3 of Smith, Milner and Daniels being a nice point earner at the back. But as I regularly state, I am eccentric, so you may think these are more rumblings of a wealthy aristocrat with more ideas than sense.

Farewell and may all your babies have bald heads.

That's all when and good but the primary reason we splash out on a defender is clean sheet prospects. Goal threat and creativity are a bonus.

I love Posh Bloke's attitude. Very humorous.

Unfortunately, by saying that wing backs such as Alonso aren't full backs, when as far as FPL are concerned, they are (which is what counts to us) he's talking absolute poppycock and in my opinion has completely wasted his time with this analysis.

Sorry, Posh Bloke, try an analysis which actually has some worth next time.

    Thinking about Forward big hitters.
    Only goals get you points.
A goal every 2 Games is good.
If you hit 2 goals out of 3 forwards you are doing well.
6 players last year exceeded 200 points. 4 were mids.
Obvious benefits with mid big hitters is they get goals assists bonus for CS and extra pt for a goal.
Hence Firmino and Josh dented this year.

A thought is if you can afford 4 mids and forwards over 10 then go for 3 mids and 1 forward.
alli/Erik who outscored Kane and 3 mil cheaper. KDB who outscored Kun and is 1.5 cheaper . Cout who equaled Firmino and the change of position. Sanchez who killed everyone and cheaper than Kane. Hazard same story. WHY GO 2/3 forward big hitters?

    1. Zikry
      • 9 Years

Alli outscored Kane by 1 while playing 500+ extra minutes. Kane actually outscored Erik while playing 600 minutes less than him too.

Sure for that so make him a priority over someone cheaper by 3 mil. Getting injured is a consideration too. I will have Kane probably but not 3 big hitters for sure. I am not saying you don't have a big hitter forward at all.
