Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Alex Iwobi catches the eye for Arsenal and Dominic Solanke does the same for Liverpool on a busy day of pre-season matches.

There are also wins for Leicester City and Swansea City, while Everton prepare for their entry into the Europa League fray next week with a strong win in Holland.

Here are the notes from yesterday’s matches…

Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 1 (Arsenal win 3-2 on penalties)

July 19, 2017 – the day an English team beat a German one on penalties. And the day Arsenal beat Bayern Munich.

Shame it was only a pre-season friendly…

Alex Iwobi’s late, late equaliser, from an Aaron Ramsey cross, took the match to spot-kicks after Bayern had defended a lead for the best part of 85 minutes.

The Germans then failed to score from three of their five attempts, with Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez saving the decisive penalty from Juan Bernat.

Ramsey (7.0) now has a goal and an assist from three pre-season outings, which will please his 5.1% FPL ownership.

That’s of particular relevance to Fantasy managers keen to take advantage of Arsenal’s excellent schedule up to Gameweek 8 – aside from trips to Liverpool and Chelsea, they have six matches rated as a 2 in the Fixture Difficult Rankings.

But Iwobi – who is available for just 5.5 and currently owned by a mere 0.8% – has contributed in all three matches, notching a goal and two assists.

However, the main rider here remains the future of Alexis Sanchez. If the Chilean does stay at the club, there seems little doubt that Iwobi would have to form an orderly queue behind both Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for a place supporting the lone striker in Wenger’s 3-4-2-1 set-up.

New man Sead Kolasinac started the match but lasted only until just before half-time before going off due to a sickness bug. Both Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud failed to take part after also falling ill, with Mohamed Elneny again asked to fill in at the back, while Ramsey and Theo Walcott played on despite feeling unwell.

Arsenal XI: Cech (Martinez 71); Bielik (Bramall 46), Elneny, Monreal; Maitland-Niles, Coquelin (Walcott), Xhaka (Ramsey 61), Kolasinac (Nelson 43); Ozil (Iwobi 46), Welbeck (Nketiah 71); Lacazette (Willock 46).

Liverpool 2 Crystal Palace 0

A first Liverpool goal for Dominic Solanke helped the Reds overcome a stubborn Crystal Palace in Hong Kong.

Solanke fired home from a Divock Origi flick before the Belgian striker then sealed the victory from a Philippe Coutinho assist.

Liverpool’s riches in attack are already causing issues among Fantasy managers, with Coutinho (30.8%), Roberto Firmino (20.2%) and new man Mohamed Salah (12.4%) all already well-owned despite no clear indications as to who, if any, will enjoy undroppable status this season.

Solanke’s fine goal and all-round performance merely muddies the water further, with manager Jurgen Klopp confirming that rotation will be a definite factor as his team prepare for Champions League football.

“If it stays like this. I would say you should perform if you want to play. I cannot decide this. It’s the performance that decides it. Hopefully we have the opportunity to do things like this (rotate). The plan is in the end we have a squad that is big enough to cope with the intensity of all the tournaments. The first thing we have to do now, not just all the transfers, is to prepare for the Premier League and the Champions League qualifier. That’s my main target. Everything else is prepared. We know all about the players. The more important thing now is to get the players here now fit for the first games. That decides a lot and I really want to use a nice base.”

Klopp used his preferred 4-3-3 formation in a first half that saw youngster Ben Woodburn utilised in a deeper role before switching to a 4-4-1-1 system after the break that involved Coutinho playing off lone striker Solanke.

Klopp described the set-up as ‘nice to watch’.

Opposing coach Frank De Boer rolled out a 3-4-3 which included Andros Townsend playing at wing-back, with Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha starting in attack alongside Keshi Anderson.

Jason Puncheon captained the team for the first time since being handed the armband by De Boer, while new signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek who, priced at just 4.5, has already attracted 16.4% ownership figures, came on for the final few minutes.

The loan signing from Chelsea was uppermost in De Boer’s thoughts post-match.

“Ruben knows the system and he is a very young lad so he can improve and learn a lot still. I think it’s a quality injection for the squad, and the position he played today was a sitting midfielder but he can also play offensive midfield, so we can use him in a lot of situations. It’s a long season and he has to play himself into the team, but I think he has the quality to do that.”

Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold (Flanagan 45), Matip (Lovren 45), Gomez (Klavan 45), Moreno (Milner 45); Henderson (Solanke 50), Lallana (Origi 48), Woodburn (Grujic 48); Salah (Kent 50), Firmino (Coutinho 48), Sturridge (Wijnaldum 48).

Crystal Palace XI: Hennessey, Ward, Dann (Kelly 77), Delaney, Townsend (Wan-Bissaka 59), Milivojevic (Loftus-Cheek 77), Puncheon (Kirby 77), Schlupp (Van Aanholt 59), Zaha (Phillips 77), Benteke (Ladapo 72), Anderson (Sako 65).
Sub not used: Speroni.

Leicester City 1 West Brom 1 (Leicester win 7-6 on penalties

Marc Albrighton scored the decisive spot-kick in Hong Kong after Ben Hamer had saved Sam Field’s strike to ensure Leicester City will battle Liverpool for the imaginatively-named Asia Trophy on Saturday evening.

Jay Rodriguez had hit a fine opener for West Brom, lashing home from a Jake Livermore pass, before Riyad Mahrez equalised with a superb solo effort.

Daniel Amartey was used as right-back alongside new signing Harry Maguire at centre-half in Leicester’s defence, while the Foxes’ other debutant, Vicente Iborra, was introduced later, along with captain Wes Morgan, midfielders Danny Drinkwater and Albrighton, and striker Jamie Vardy.

City boss Craig Shakespeare didn’t have new signing Eldin Jakupovic available for the Asia trip, but the goalkeeper is expected to join up with the squad soon, while reports suggest that Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has as good as signed for the Foxes as well.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis put Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi in from the start following his arrival on a season-long loan.

West Brom will now face Crystal Palace at the weekend after losing a shoot-out that was run using the ABBA system of penalty takers.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Amartey (Simpson 46), Maguire (Moore 46), Benalouane (Morgan 46), Elder (Fuchs 46); Riyad Mahrez (Iborra 48), Ndidi (King 44), James (Drinkwater 44), Lawrence (Albrighton 48); Slimani (Vardy 44), Okazaki (Ulloa 44).

West Brom XI: Foster; Nyom, Evans, Hegazi (Wilson 66), Dawson; Yacob (Chadli 56), Livermore (Harper 77), Phillips (Leko 57), Brunt (Field 52), Rodriguez (McClean 51); Rondon (Robson-Kanu 57).

FC Twente 0 Everton 3

Everton warmed up for next week’s first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie at Goodison with an emphatic win in Holland.

Goals from Kevin Mirallas, Aaron Lennon and Kieran Dowell saw off Enschede, with new signing Michael Keane coming in for his first start alongside Ashley Williams at centre-half and Dominic Calvert-Lewin given a run-out up front in place of Wayne Rooney.

Ronald Koeman has been busy in the transfer market, but deemed new men Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez, along with youngster Mason Holgate, not fit enough to play yet.

Former Southampton full-back Cuco Martina did make his Everton debut, however, coming on for the last 30 minutes as Koeman made a host of changes.

Everton face Genk at the weekend before their competitive season begins next Thursday evening.

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Baines (Connolly 46), Keane (Jagielka 46), Williams (Dowell 60), Kenny (Martina 60); McCarthy, Barry (Schneiderlin 60), Davies (Besic 60), Mirallas (Lennon 60), Lookman (Klaassen 60); Calvert-Lewin (Rooney 60).

Richmond Kickers 1 Swansea City 2

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham scored his first goal for Swansea City as Paul Clements’s men left it late to win in America.

The 5.5-priced striker is attracting a certain amount of interest as a budget option should the ongoing injury to Fernando Llorente keep the Spaniard sidelined, and Abraham did his cause no harm when he headed home a Martin Olsson in the 80th minute.

Fellow striker Ollie McBurnie had earlier given the Swans the lead from the penalty spot after defender Kyle Bartley had been fouled in the Richmond box.

The 18.8%-owned defender Angel Rangel was given his first US pre-season start by Clement, with Mike van der Hoorn, Stephen Kingsley, Jay Fulton, Matt Grimes, Jefferson Montero and McBurnie all also in the side for the first half.

Grimes was handed set-piece duties until he was replaced by Tom Carroll with half an hour to go.

Swansea City XI: Nordfeldt (Mulder 45); Rangel (Naughton 67), Bartley (Fernandez 67), van der Hoorn (Mawson 67), Kingsley (Olsson 67); Mesa (Britton 67), Fulton (Fer 61), Grimes (Carroll 61), Narsingh (Routledge 61), Montero (Ayew 61); McBurnie (Abraham 60).

J-Rod, bit of a knee jerk for sure but I was already looking at Phillips in a 3-5-2, so is J-Rod perhaps a better option in a 3-4-3?

I do like those fixtures, would like to target them with a low with £6m player.

I had Deeney prior to J-Rod. But with his fixtures i have chosen the latter

Seen Deeney starting to get quite a bit of love. Maybe I've overlooked him.

Sorry, are you advocating us getting a WBA striker? After Rondon? Even at 6m, I think i'll pass. Come the first wildcard, I promise I will reconsider.

You can get whoever you like.

I'm saying I was looking at Phillips anyway, so is J-Rod a better proposition at the same price

He is because there are good 6m mid alternatives if you don't get Phillips and not great 6m forward options.

I have toyed with phillips. And I am strongly looking at a cheapish 3rd striker. JRod may do well, but he's a wait and see for me. fwiw I'm on Gayle atm.

But, you're right, the comparison between phillips and jrod is valid, and I can see more upside with jrod 🙂

Think it's a case of wait and see for the sub 6.5m FWD option to emerge this season. Was so hard last season to find one.

In the lowest pit in hell sits the Pulis strikers and attacking midfielders - condemned to spend an eternity never scoring goals.

In Pulis teams always back the big defenders - they are the goal threat.

Is this true though Jonty? It was true last season but what about the season before? And what about when Pulis was at Stoke? Easy for us to have short memories and recency bias.

Sounds like a new Netflix series. A mix of the bloody Game of Thrones angst of the savage Baggies defence and the dystopian Handmaids tale existence of their attack, caged, never let out to show what they are capable of.

I'm not asking whether I should get one, I'm asking which one 😉

Phillips was decent for a time last year. 4.3ppm is not far behind Sterling, and only 0.3 behind Pedro, 0.5 behind Sigurdsson who are both quite a bit more expensive.

Waiting to see who Southampton start up front, as think Austin or Gabbi offer better potential than J-Rod. Like him as a player, but no one gets past the Pulis's rule 1: Strikers are useful for one thing, harrying defenders into winning corners so a defender can score from that corner.

I like JRod; you do have the 13/14 season where he hit 15g in his history. Feeling his way back from the ACL but it's looking rosy I think, Andy, seems to have been up top with Rondon judging by the team sheet!

I like the fixtures definitely; it's just a case of, if I did get him in, do I drop Dawson for him, or maybe get rid of Myhill and pop Eliot there - already on 3WBA with Foster too. Hmm

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who is looking to do a 'Crabtree' and swerve Liverpool assets this season.

With so many options nailing the one that will score each week is tough - surely its better to go for a player for another team that hogs the points?

Rotation will surely loom. We've already seen Klopp do that with the Europa League and he's admitted that the squad will be rotated this year with Champions League. Surely its better to go for nailed on players in other sides?

But as we saw last season - Coutinho, Mane etc can put in some steallar scores. Can we really miss out on those?

What do you think - time to ignore Liverpool or invest in their assets in 17/18?

The Crabtree reference relates to FPL winner 16/17 and Everton fan Ben Crabtree who went the whole season ignoring Liverpool. Most know that - but thought I'd mention in case anyone was unaware.

Not ignoring them for the sake of ignoring them but it looks increasingly unlikely that I start with one.

Mane is the one I really want and at 9.5m I think I prefer Alli (definitely if I go without Kane).

Salah interests me but I don't know if I want to start with £9m tied up in a player I want to see play in the Prem first.

I'm sure I'll get some assets at some point, but maybe not in GW1

Ha! While brave, dismissing an entire team would be extremely foolish generally - kudos to Crabtree for sticking to his principles, but you are tying one of your arms behind your back from the off with this type of decision. That said I have no Liverpool on my team atm.

Crabtree just shows that there is no single indispensable pick. You just need to score consistently better than the average and pick good captains.

I currently have Coutinho in my first draft but Liverpool don't have the best fixtures to begin with and the nice one they have in GW2 at home to Palace is bracketed by the midweek Champions League qualifiers so i suspect there may be some early substitution of players in that match.

      I'm currently without.

Milner looks too expensive considering the competition with Robertson. For that money I would want a true wingback. I think people are being blindsided by penalties which are rare occurrences.

There is too much competition in midfield for me to find much value.

      CL will cause rotation headaches.

      Their fixtures are not fantastic.

They're quite similar to City in many regards. The point about picking the right one due to a wide spread of points across the attackers can be applied to Pep's side. As can the point about rotation. Yet people are drooling over their fantasy assets. As you said, their players are capable of big scores, so for me, I'd rather buy a raffle ticket than sit back while they gather points. However, I won't be going with a Pool player from the off, but rather wait and assess them.

No chance. He will play his first team without rotation except for cups and will also pretend that some of his stars are injured when it comes to international breaks. As the CL proper gets going and the Christmas schedule comes in then there will be rotation, by which time we can get rid.

If he plays Milner centre-mid and Robertson LB Robertson's a good investment at 4.5, his Hull price. Would love plenty of CS though I'll expect very few. Will bring some decent attacking returns.

I am not signing any Liverpool players currently. I will monitor if mane and Salah hit a good patch of form and fixture's. Countinho Is the only one I am considering gw1 but only if he he shows major pre season form and starts taking every free kick and corner.

No Pool cover as far I can see at present. The midfield lottery had me last season, I'd rather not gamble with my points. LOL. It is a little unnerving but my initial team is just far more balanced without the cover. Hopefully it works.

The only ones that interest me are Firmino or Mane.

Firmino is a unique player in their squad, and seems as close to a certain starter as possible. Playing off the striker or as the false 9, he offers obvious potential. But last season was frustrating, he's often a facilitator for others and at 8.5 as a striker he is a tricky price. Mane is brilliant when fit, has shown it for long enough now to be classified amongst the best midfielders - but with Salah and a fit Sturridge (for now) he is more of a rotation risk I think, and Alli at the same price or KDB at 10 may be a safer bet.

TLDR - I dunno, maybe one of them.

If Milner is a starter, he walks into my team, only Mane and Coutinho will be considered from their attack based on how they start. If Robertson comes in cheap and is nailed then I am definitely interested.

I wouldn't ignore arguably the best attacking team in the league.

I would say have a bit of patience. Pick your favourite and stick with him. Points chasing leads to lost point in this instance I believe.

Klopp seems to be gearing up to rotate: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/07/18/jurgen-klopp-warns-liverpool-players-prepare-season-rotation/

It's definitely something that dents your trust in a Liverpool player, and when you're doing a pairwise comparison it's a factor that will weigh heavily against them.

I do have Mane in at the moment, but the UCL qualifiers will be a good place to see where Klopp's head is at with regards to the lineup. He could easily become someone else at his price, or maybe leave altogether to allow me to invest elsewhere.

Not sure how you can ignore them with that plum Watford home starter. Currently holding Milner and Coutinho in my team. May look to downgrade a midfielder at some point as worried about City/Utd

I think I'll start with Firminho. There are not that many other options that I like for 8.5 max up top and I can't imagine there will be that much rotation in the first few weeks. I expect that after a few GW's it will become clear what budget/mid-price forward is best to get so I can always downgrade Bobby to whoever that forward will be.

      City- aguero, kdb, sane, Jesus
      Spurs- Kane, eriksen, Alli
      Liverpool- firmino, coutinho, mane, Salah

All of the above teams seem in a similar boat, I guess the only difference I can see is that Liverpool's deeper playing players like wijnaldum and lallana seem to pop up quite a bit as well.

Heaton and Foster don't rotate this year, and Heaton now a 5.0. ( I had those 2 almost wire--wire).
Nice budget on the def's, though if Tomkins gets nailed that can get you .5.
I just dropped Sanchez, to get Luk and Kun as rotating capt's. Fraser is a great dif.(fix's)
Rooney should get a few runs, and then pu after fixtures turn---do you think he's on pens? I bet yes.
      That got lengthy. IMO GL

Do you guys also consider what I would call the "spread risk" ?

in a FPL perspective, I tend to favour a "main man" strategy and prior teams in which there is one main point focus. That is how is see Man U this year and what makes Lukaku a must-have in my opinion. Just like Ibra was last year.

On the other hand, teams like Liverpool or City offer a lot of option and points will probably be spread amongst them. Owning the right asset at the right time can end up being quite pricey or very dependant to variance.

    1. Sánchez
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

I probably do this. Agree on Lukaku. I'd say no other Man Utd attacker is worth considering. So fork out for the top man. While at a club with option, I'd look for value at a given time like Son when Kane was out last season or Pedro if Hazard is out GW1

(Sorry, took so long to write this, I accidentally posted on the wrong article! Long post alert...)

    Morning all!

I've been looking this morning for potential value in the 5.0m midfield bracket (As an upgrade to RLC or T Carroll).

The conclusion that I've drawn is that- at this stage- there doesn't appear to be any...

    I've taken a few examples in this bracket (from last season), and I would be interested to know if any of you think that they will be kicking on this year, and be forming a part of our sides;

Christian Atsu - 32 apps (15 starts), 5 goals, 3 assists (has never quite been able to cut it in the premier league so far...)

Rajiv van La Parra - 43 apps (39 starts), 2 goals, 3 assists (picked up a couple of assists in Huddersfield's friendly the other day)

Ramadan Sobhi - 17 apps (8 starts), just the one assist (gained favour at the end of last season, a tricky winger, young and likely to improve)

Jason Puncheon - 36 apps (35 starts) No goals, 5 assists (new club captain, will this be his year?)

Will Hughes - 38 apps (28 starts), 2 goals, 3 assists and 10 yellow cards! (He was always touted as a great English talent, so of course hasn't really kicked on... Will he prove himself in the Prem though?)

Are there any other 5m midfielders that are worthy of a mention?

Any worthy of starting with, or will we be jumping on an early bandwagon?

Will be interesting to know your thoughts!

I have to admit, I don't particularly see Emre Can as an option... He did score 5 goals last season, 2 assists... But he is primarily a defensive midfielder... I think he would be one of those who you would never really expect to return many points...

Had the pleasure :-/ of watching Van La Parra for 2 seasons at Wolves. Kind of guy that looks a world beater one week and then goes totally missing for about 4 to 5 games.

When he really fancys it he can turn it on hence why one of his two goals last season was against his former club. Nothing like a bit of stick from opposition fans to get you going. I could quite easily see him bagging a goal and assist in his first few games but id be incredibly surprised if he kept any sort of form up long term.

Thanks for this- didn't know too much about him before writing this up! We can add him to the 'avoid' pile unless he shows any kind of form then! You never know, the buzz of playing in the Premier League might be enough to make him a world beater every week! 😉

Gudmundsson at Burnley, was very impressive start off last season before injury. Always a big threat, scoring, assisting, hitting post. Fans spoke about buy of the season before injury. Was assist-king in CS with Charlton.

Extended the band up to £5.5m. The types of players at this cheap band who do well are young players who break into the first team. Think of Alli or Kane for example. Holgate last season was useful. Looking at players this season:

Tom Davies (Eve) - Tough fixtures initially and has a lot of competition for places particularly if Siggy arrives.

Gray (Lei) - If Mahrez leaves he will get gametime and has enough creativity and goal threat to score points

Gundogan (Mci) - Injury curtailed him so could be underpriced this season.

Ward-Prowse (Sou) - On set pieces, has creativity. Similar to Gray in that if he gets gametime he will score points.

Sobhi (Sto) - Similar player to Gray. With Arnie gone could get game time.

Carroll (Swa) - Sure starter after moving to Swansea in January. If Siggy leaves may get some set pieces and play a more attacking role.

Loftus-Cheek (Cpl) - Has talent, but unclear as to how much gametime he will get vying for a place with club captain Puncheon.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep an eye out in the later pre-season games to see who is playing. For me Gray, JWP and Sobhi are of interest as they have some attacking threat and may secure more gametime this season.

There's quite a few at Spurs.

Dembele has been talking about how he needs to improve his goal scoring this season and is nailed when fit. Wanyama got 4 goals and 2 assists last season and is also nailed. Winks got a goal and an assist and 30pts from only 494 minutes played before his injury. He is expected to play much more this season especially against the weaker teams and is a pretty attacking player. If you can spare a Spurs spot in your team they offer decent value.

      1. AceKn1ght
        • 8 Years

Wanyama is a player that I would most definitely avoid from a fantasy perspective... Winks is a wait and see- if he gets into the side, he could be a good option as a cheap way into the Spurs attack!

For me though, there are so many good premium options at Spurs that it's unlikely a lot of us will be able to spare a spot for the cheaper options....

It's a pretty unappetising mix of DMs, uncertain starters or complete unknowns in that price bracket and I don't foresee going for any. But Steven Berghuis at Watford perhaps deserves a mention, 7 goals and 5 assists in 25 games on loan at Feyenoord last season, featured in both friendlies thus far but the main issue is he may be going back to Holland.

Interesting... Just read up a little bit about him, and it seems that the player did want to return to Holland... But with a new manager at Watford, all it would take is a little bit of faith in him, and assurances of playing time, and he may well hang around!

37 appearances last year (27 starts), 3 goals and 3 assists!

I had him in my team a few years ago (for Hull), and I think I had him when he went on a mini scoring run! Got me double figures a couple of times...

10 goals for hull in the championship the season before last, so he can definitely score goals!

Will he still be able to cut it in the Premier League though?

            Wait wait wait ....

            5.0m? 5.5m??

I am adamant that below 7.0m there is NO value in midfield this season. Oh sure out of the morass a couple of midfielders will emerge and create a bandwagon, probably short-lived, but my point is you can't possibly predict who they'll be until at least GW3, so you're just groping in the dark.

At 7m you've got proven performers like Ramsey, Fabs and Zaha which are no longer punts. Therefore, in my view if you're going to spend under 7m you're better off nabbing a 4.5 or two and spend your money in defence where 6.5, 6.0, 5,5 or even 5.0 will get you proven quality.

And yes, I've been a 5-at-the-back guy for the whole week now!

I currently have Kane Lukaku and Jesus up top... I'm having to go quite light on my midfield....

Saying that, I did experiment with a strong mid, and Kane Lukaku and J Rod up front... Would you say the latter is a better option?

My hunch is you'd need a fatally weak defence to afford that. It might work with a front 2 and a 4.5 nonplaying 3rd striker, or if you downgraded either Kane or Kaku to an 8-8.5, but I haven't done the math.

Provided Lindy's nailed on that works. Cedric has great fixtures, and the few times you'd bench him, Brighton have easy games, so your rotation with Dunk is great.

Hi Hotdogs, the reason I started looking at the 5m bracket was because I'm already on RLC and T. Carroll.... With potential uncertainty over RLC's
game time, I had a look to see if I could use the 0.5m I had in the bank to 'upgrade' him to a 5m midfielder... So did a quick analysis on a few of the options, and opened the floor to other suggestions!

But my point really is why not just go for another 4.5 mid that you won't even need to play much ? Why look to spend more ?

Jack Cork at Burnley will be nailed, Soton, WBA 4.5 mids etc clocked up 2000+ minutes. Carroll is nailed so I think, with respect, you are complicating the simple decision of selecting a non playing 5th mid

I'd say it's quite risky to own him actually; I'd be worried many would be disappointed that he didn't start and sell, meaning a situation where he's threatening a drop. Market always v volatile after GW1 at peak player numbers, the casual player taking lots of hits too

Cedric CANNOT flop - He's cheaper than Berty and VVD and will suffer the same fate defensively....

RLC surely being 4.5 bench fodder doesn't count.

I'd say Mkhitaryan is in way more RMT's than he ought to be and will only let owners down.

Really can't see how anyone would even consider him for 8.0. Chances of being nailed on are very slim. All the Man Utd winger types are the same that way

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/rafa-benitez-newcastle-goalkeeper-transfer-13352194

Intriguing article from local rag in Newcastle:

'After being asked whether Rob Elliot would be number 1 this season, Benitez shed some light on the goalkeeper situation.
Benitez, speaking at Sports Direct in Dublin, said: “The main thing for Rob Elliot is to be fit and he’s training hard after playing the final three games of last season.
“He is a good goalkeeper but I want him to compete.
“You can’t have players that think this is easy because they are the only one in that position.
“Hopefully we can bring in a new goalkeeper, and this competition will be good for the team.'

Does this imply Eliot is the first choice? 4.0 keeper alert...

Randolph (rumored) to compete for his position thus making it risky. But should start 1st game though.

Yeah that's the very article I read through and found that at the bottom, which seems to suggest Randolph will be brought in for cover. I actually owned Randolph last season over Xmas when Pickford got injured. Saved a King pen for me!

That's an awesome read between lines. I think he's saying Elliot is #1, but trying to put a fire up his arse.

Hehe yeah - I have another one too, but not as FPL relevant. Def suggests a 4.0 keeper might be on

Nice. I'm on alert now. Elliot seems sorted early on then. I will wait for first GW before drafting due to his highish ownership. Can't afford to lose money straight off the bat.

He could well rise to 4.1 or more quickly if he starts in GW1.

Elliot is one of the rare pro footie players you see with a gut on him. Maybe that's connected to Rafa feeling the need to call him out.
