Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Alex Iwobi catches the eye for Arsenal and Dominic Solanke does the same for Liverpool on a busy day of pre-season matches.

There are also wins for Leicester City and Swansea City, while Everton prepare for their entry into the Europa League fray next week with a strong win in Holland.

Here are the notes from yesterday’s matches…

Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 1 (Arsenal win 3-2 on penalties)

July 19, 2017 – the day an English team beat a German one on penalties. And the day Arsenal beat Bayern Munich.

Shame it was only a pre-season friendly…

Alex Iwobi’s late, late equaliser, from an Aaron Ramsey cross, took the match to spot-kicks after Bayern had defended a lead for the best part of 85 minutes.

The Germans then failed to score from three of their five attempts, with Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez saving the decisive penalty from Juan Bernat.

Ramsey (7.0) now has a goal and an assist from three pre-season outings, which will please his 5.1% FPL ownership.

That’s of particular relevance to Fantasy managers keen to take advantage of Arsenal’s excellent schedule up to Gameweek 8 – aside from trips to Liverpool and Chelsea, they have six matches rated as a 2 in the Fixture Difficult Rankings.

But Iwobi – who is available for just 5.5 and currently owned by a mere 0.8% – has contributed in all three matches, notching a goal and two assists.

However, the main rider here remains the future of Alexis Sanchez. If the Chilean does stay at the club, there seems little doubt that Iwobi would have to form an orderly queue behind both Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for a place supporting the lone striker in Wenger’s 3-4-2-1 set-up.

New man Sead Kolasinac started the match but lasted only until just before half-time before going off due to a sickness bug. Both Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud failed to take part after also falling ill, with Mohamed Elneny again asked to fill in at the back, while Ramsey and Theo Walcott played on despite feeling unwell.

Arsenal XI: Cech (Martinez 71); Bielik (Bramall 46), Elneny, Monreal; Maitland-Niles, Coquelin (Walcott), Xhaka (Ramsey 61), Kolasinac (Nelson 43); Ozil (Iwobi 46), Welbeck (Nketiah 71); Lacazette (Willock 46).

Liverpool 2 Crystal Palace 0

A first Liverpool goal for Dominic Solanke helped the Reds overcome a stubborn Crystal Palace in Hong Kong.

Solanke fired home from a Divock Origi flick before the Belgian striker then sealed the victory from a Philippe Coutinho assist.

Liverpool’s riches in attack are already causing issues among Fantasy managers, with Coutinho (30.8%), Roberto Firmino (20.2%) and new man Mohamed Salah (12.4%) all already well-owned despite no clear indications as to who, if any, will enjoy undroppable status this season.

Solanke’s fine goal and all-round performance merely muddies the water further, with manager Jurgen Klopp confirming that rotation will be a definite factor as his team prepare for Champions League football.

“If it stays like this. I would say you should perform if you want to play. I cannot decide this. It’s the performance that decides it. Hopefully we have the opportunity to do things like this (rotate). The plan is in the end we have a squad that is big enough to cope with the intensity of all the tournaments. The first thing we have to do now, not just all the transfers, is to prepare for the Premier League and the Champions League qualifier. That’s my main target. Everything else is prepared. We know all about the players. The more important thing now is to get the players here now fit for the first games. That decides a lot and I really want to use a nice base.”

Klopp used his preferred 4-3-3 formation in a first half that saw youngster Ben Woodburn utilised in a deeper role before switching to a 4-4-1-1 system after the break that involved Coutinho playing off lone striker Solanke.

Klopp described the set-up as ‘nice to watch’.

Opposing coach Frank De Boer rolled out a 3-4-3 which included Andros Townsend playing at wing-back, with Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha starting in attack alongside Keshi Anderson.

Jason Puncheon captained the team for the first time since being handed the armband by De Boer, while new signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek who, priced at just 4.5, has already attracted 16.4% ownership figures, came on for the final few minutes.

The loan signing from Chelsea was uppermost in De Boer’s thoughts post-match.

“Ruben knows the system and he is a very young lad so he can improve and learn a lot still. I think it’s a quality injection for the squad, and the position he played today was a sitting midfielder but he can also play offensive midfield, so we can use him in a lot of situations. It’s a long season and he has to play himself into the team, but I think he has the quality to do that.”

Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold (Flanagan 45), Matip (Lovren 45), Gomez (Klavan 45), Moreno (Milner 45); Henderson (Solanke 50), Lallana (Origi 48), Woodburn (Grujic 48); Salah (Kent 50), Firmino (Coutinho 48), Sturridge (Wijnaldum 48).

Crystal Palace XI: Hennessey, Ward, Dann (Kelly 77), Delaney, Townsend (Wan-Bissaka 59), Milivojevic (Loftus-Cheek 77), Puncheon (Kirby 77), Schlupp (Van Aanholt 59), Zaha (Phillips 77), Benteke (Ladapo 72), Anderson (Sako 65).
Sub not used: Speroni.

Leicester City 1 West Brom 1 (Leicester win 7-6 on penalties

Marc Albrighton scored the decisive spot-kick in Hong Kong after Ben Hamer had saved Sam Field’s strike to ensure Leicester City will battle Liverpool for the imaginatively-named Asia Trophy on Saturday evening.

Jay Rodriguez had hit a fine opener for West Brom, lashing home from a Jake Livermore pass, before Riyad Mahrez equalised with a superb solo effort.

Daniel Amartey was used as right-back alongside new signing Harry Maguire at centre-half in Leicester’s defence, while the Foxes’ other debutant, Vicente Iborra, was introduced later, along with captain Wes Morgan, midfielders Danny Drinkwater and Albrighton, and striker Jamie Vardy.

City boss Craig Shakespeare didn’t have new signing Eldin Jakupovic available for the Asia trip, but the goalkeeper is expected to join up with the squad soon, while reports suggest that Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has as good as signed for the Foxes as well.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis put Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi in from the start following his arrival on a season-long loan.

West Brom will now face Crystal Palace at the weekend after losing a shoot-out that was run using the ABBA system of penalty takers.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Amartey (Simpson 46), Maguire (Moore 46), Benalouane (Morgan 46), Elder (Fuchs 46); Riyad Mahrez (Iborra 48), Ndidi (King 44), James (Drinkwater 44), Lawrence (Albrighton 48); Slimani (Vardy 44), Okazaki (Ulloa 44).

West Brom XI: Foster; Nyom, Evans, Hegazi (Wilson 66), Dawson; Yacob (Chadli 56), Livermore (Harper 77), Phillips (Leko 57), Brunt (Field 52), Rodriguez (McClean 51); Rondon (Robson-Kanu 57).

FC Twente 0 Everton 3

Everton warmed up for next week’s first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie at Goodison with an emphatic win in Holland.

Goals from Kevin Mirallas, Aaron Lennon and Kieran Dowell saw off Enschede, with new signing Michael Keane coming in for his first start alongside Ashley Williams at centre-half and Dominic Calvert-Lewin given a run-out up front in place of Wayne Rooney.

Ronald Koeman has been busy in the transfer market, but deemed new men Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez, along with youngster Mason Holgate, not fit enough to play yet.

Former Southampton full-back Cuco Martina did make his Everton debut, however, coming on for the last 30 minutes as Koeman made a host of changes.

Everton face Genk at the weekend before their competitive season begins next Thursday evening.

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Baines (Connolly 46), Keane (Jagielka 46), Williams (Dowell 60), Kenny (Martina 60); McCarthy, Barry (Schneiderlin 60), Davies (Besic 60), Mirallas (Lennon 60), Lookman (Klaassen 60); Calvert-Lewin (Rooney 60).

Richmond Kickers 1 Swansea City 2

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham scored his first goal for Swansea City as Paul Clements’s men left it late to win in America.

The 5.5-priced striker is attracting a certain amount of interest as a budget option should the ongoing injury to Fernando Llorente keep the Spaniard sidelined, and Abraham did his cause no harm when he headed home a Martin Olsson in the 80th minute.

Fellow striker Ollie McBurnie had earlier given the Swans the lead from the penalty spot after defender Kyle Bartley had been fouled in the Richmond box.

The 18.8%-owned defender Angel Rangel was given his first US pre-season start by Clement, with Mike van der Hoorn, Stephen Kingsley, Jay Fulton, Matt Grimes, Jefferson Montero and McBurnie all also in the side for the first half.

Grimes was handed set-piece duties until he was replaced by Tom Carroll with half an hour to go.

Swansea City XI: Nordfeldt (Mulder 45); Rangel (Naughton 67), Bartley (Fernandez 67), van der Hoorn (Mawson 67), Kingsley (Olsson 67); Mesa (Britton 67), Fulton (Fer 61), Grimes (Carroll 61), Narsingh (Routledge 61), Montero (Ayew 61); McBurnie (Abraham 60).

This year I'm finding it tougher than ever. Last few seasons has been trying to get Kane/Kun/Sanchez etc and working around that. This year so many forward options will score week in week out. Kane, Kun, Jesus, Lacazette, Lukaku and Morata are all great players. How to narrow it down to 2-3 of them...

Simple. You take those which are tried and tested in the PL first. Kane, Lukaku, Jesus etc.

Don't get beholden to players. You're going to have all of those players at different points of the season. React early, go with your gut and be ready to drop your favourite once in a while.

    Premium Defenders vs. Lower/Mid-Priced Mids

Bit of a long post, but I did a bit of analysis based upon a previous hot topic that seemed flawed to me (this is also flawed, as I will explain, but less so IMO). The aim is to compare value in the premium defender category vs. the 5.5-7.0m midfield category for this season. I did this analysis in order to help me inform me on the optimal formation to start the season with, having been tempted by less-common formations such as 433. Should I take that extra premium defender or a similarly priced midfielder? I hope this helps you decide as it has with me.

I took a sample size of 13 premium defenders which includes people like Alderweireld as well as the likes of Alonso. These are the defenders with attacking threat from the big sides last season, they are now priced 5.5-7.0m. I have used modified points for Moses (159) and Milner (182) so they represent the points they would have achieved if they were classed as defenders. For the midfielders, I took a sample size of the top 15 FPL points scorers who are now priced between 5.5 and 7.0m for the new FPL season.

    Headline Numbers:
    -------------------------------- DEFs ----- MIDs
    Average points ----------- 129.3 ---- 123.4
    Points per minute --------- .0571 ---- .0531
    Points per 90 --------------- 5.142 ----- 4.784

First thing to note is this is pretty close, but the premium defenders edge both measures. Overall the midfielders actually played more minutes (2444.5) on average compared with defenders (2390.4) although this because I chose to include Kompany and Trippier in this category. Both of these players played around half the minutes (or less) than Fabregas, who was the midfielder with the least minutes in the sample. Therefore, PPM or PP90 is more illuminating.
So the defenders win, good news for those, like me, who are looking at 433 or 442, right? Well, maybe. Since the sub 7.0m mids from last season have seen price hikes or have been reclassified (e.g. King) this is biased towards the defenders. I didn’t include these players simply because they aren’t available in this price range or position for this year. I will work more on this and maybe post further analysis later.
So, of the players in each bracket who had the best PPM?
Trippier (.0898) tops the defenders, followed by Kompany (.0695) and Alonso (.0657). All of these comfortably outscore the vast majority of midfielders, with two exceptions: Willian (.0743) and Fabregas who is miles ahead of the rest of the category (.0902). If I knock out the bottom two points scorers in the midfield category to equal out the sample sizes (Mata and Tadic) then the average for the mid category does not change within 3 significant figures.

tl;dr : I chose the top 15 5.5-7.0m mids and 13 premium defenders (WBs and CBs) and found the defenders had better PPM and average points than the midfield category. However, this is skewed as the top performers in this mid bracket have been reclassified or hiked in price, but it does represent what we have to pick from right now. Fabregas and Willian are head and shoulders above in the sub 7m mids. Trippier, Kompany and Alonso have the best PPM in the premium defence category, even after Milner and Moses have their scores updated to reflect them being categorised as defenders last year.

      Two questions:

      1) From a methodological point of view, why 13 players?

      2) Have you considered using VORP (value over replacement player) as a measure instead of raw PP90? Because FPL requires a minimum of 3 defenders to be played every week (and technically 2 midfielders, though most would play 3/4 each week), you also need to compare them to their own player pool in order to measure how well players in this bracket outperform their peers in terms of value.

Defenders: Alonso, Moses, Valenica, Rose, Walker, Alderweireld, Kompany, Bellerin, Koscielny, Milner, Trippier, Cahill, Azpi

It's subjective but I wanted it as big as possible and to contain both CBs and FBs that are generally considered 'premium', I think the biggest stretch here is Koscielny but I wanted to cover as many teams as possible, also toyed with the idea of Clyne but his stats just don't compare (goals and assists) with the other FB/WBs. I chose the midfield sample size roughly to match, if make it match (by removing Mata/Tadic as I mention) it doesn't change any averages in a significant way.

I haven't considered VORP, still working on this though, so maybe next 🙂

It's another really interesting piece of work on what is definitely going to be a tough decision for many this year. My instinct is to always side with the more attacking players, but the more data that is presented (like yours) which demonstrates that defensive players might be the more reliable investment, the more I find myself wavering.

          Thanks for the insight!

That's more or less the reason I did it. Want to go 433 as I like the look of the teams I make with this years price structure. But is that justified? It seems it might be.

    4. The Tinkerman

Another thing worth pointing out is that this is the whole premium defender category more or less. You pick one you seem more or less sure to get decent points. The midfield pool is much bigger and there is therefore more risk of selecting a dud. But this is all balanced by how each year we seem to get players that outperform their price in the sub 7m midfield bracket, who are then reclassified or boosted in price, so there is potentially big reward in sub 7m midfielders if you can find the King of this season or the Alli of last. Picking a similarly priced defender seems a safer bet for points from the off.

Yeah, premium defenders definitely have the higher floor, but that value midfielder has the higher ceiling in terms of points (and especially in terms of teambuilding strategy).
I think that accounting for the value of replacement players will be an interesting next step.

I'd go Foster / Fabianski as GK as they have a good home/away rotation
      Dummett unlikely to start
      Good MF and Att

Same formation as me. Why not sell JRod and upgrade Sane to KDB ?

Ideas about two 4.0 bench fodders?
    Too risky?

Only if it's 2 defenders. Going with Elliot and, probably, Rangel myself.

        4.0 can only be defender.

Not smart when three defenders must start, no possible sub to come in.

Maybe 3 nailed and confident starters will not need a sub

Why not get Elliot to free up 0.5m and get a decent 4.5m defender?

            I already have elliot.
And also two 4.0 defenders. Now I found 0.5 extra money and doubt whether ro spend it on a 4.5 defender or not

Plays at CM, fairly deep yes. Doesn't get into the box much - but a fantastic player.

Anyone think Scott Dann might be worthwhile this season? Looks like he's getting preseason minutes, and he has always been a set piece target.

Yes. CP usually has a run of clean sheets and he is a scoring threat.

Am I too heavy in midfield? Thoughts?

    Foster (4.0)
    Luiz, Trippier, Francis (4.0, 4.0)
    KdB, Coutinho, Alli, Willian (RLC)
    Kane, Defoe, Gayle

I currently have a similar midfield: KDB, Alli, Coutinho, Fraser. I think it comes down to whether you think that Coutinho at 9.0, Alli at 9.5 and KDB at 10.0 will score on par with very enticing high-priced forwards. I do.

Yeah think that's a fair assessment, what's your defence like?

I have the popular trio of Cedric, Trippier, Lindelhof, plus Daniels and Mee. So far, playing a 4-4-2, yet I may totally switch it all up based on preseason injuries, form, and transfers.

Whoops. Ofc, I should have looked at your forwards. I would figure out a way to have at least 2 of the 5 desired high-priced forwards. So, downgrade one of your four 7.0 and greater mids and upgrade Defoe.

Thanks for vote of confidence, I am hoping there are not too many additions to the start of the season because atm I like how my team is looking, obviously through the help of RMT and much swapping and changing.

If i'd wanna play draft this year, can someone briefly explain it and how to make the most of it? Thanks!

Draft is about positional scarcity. There are five heavy-hitter strikers and maybe another 6-8 usable guys followed by a bunch of dross. You need at least two of those 11-13 players. In the middle, you have closer to 8 heavy hitters, a middle class of maybe 10-15, and then a lot of either reliable-but-unspectacular players (Chris Brunt, I'm looking at you) or high-potential-but-unproven ones (Demari Gray). Then in defence, you need discipline. Everyone will want James Milner and Marcos Alonso, but what of Chelsea go to four at the back? What if Milner gets 4 pens this season instead of 7? Are they then worth the premium? And are they really that much better than Craig Dawson or Alfie Mawson or Scott Dann or the half dozen otter replacement level players? I might try to hit one defender from a top side around the sixth round, after I have at least 2 strikers and 2-3 mids, but if I miss out, then I'm still happy because there are better attacking players available.

Also, know that you can play the waiver/free agent game. You can swap defenders (and sometimes keepers) on a weekly basis to play fixtures. And finally, I'm very reluctant of the FPL draft game. A 15-player squad for a draft game is tiny, and there is no trading, so heavy hitters will stay put. I think I'd rather use DugoutFC or PlayTogga.

Done a second draft and think I'm getting closer to a final team.

Would love some scout input if possible though - what's everyone's thoughts on this?

    Foster / Elliot
Cahill / Yedlin or Simpson / Francis / (Mariappa / Rangel)
    Zaha / Alli / Pedro / Coutinho / (Arthur)
    Lukaku / Kane / (Vokes)

    Cheers

Hows this for a too heavy team?

    Foster
    Trippier-Cedric-Daniels
    Coutinhio-Tadic-Stanislas-Phillips
    Kane-Lukaku-Aguero

    Myhill-Carroll-Yedlin-Rosenior

Note: I can swap Coutinhio to Alli and Phillips/Stanislas to Mooy
