Moving Target

Moving Target – Cuco Martina

Everton’s busy summer recruitment drive continued with the signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old penned a three-year contract with the Toffees and looks set to compete with Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny for the starting spot at right-back in the absence of the injured Seamus Coleman.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman expressed his delight at being able to bring in the versatile defender:

“Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important. It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad. I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.”

The History

After spending his youth career at Dutch side Feyenoord, Martina’s first experience of senior football came at lower league side RBC Roosendaal, where he spent three seasons.

Martina then moved to Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk and made 43 appearances between 2011 and 2013 before joining FC Twente in the summer of 2013.

He featured 48 times over the next two seasons, registering one goal and one assist, playing both at centre-back and right-back, before moving to Southampton in July 2015.

Martina played 15 league matches for Saints in 2015/16, producing one goal and one assist, but his first-team opportunities were limited under Claude Puel last season, making just nine league appearances.

The defender plays his international football for Curaçao and has racked up 32 caps since making his debut back in August 2011.

The Prospects

The serious knee injury suffered by Coleman meant that Everton were always likely to be in the market for an experienced right-back this summer and Martina now looks set to push hard for a place in Koeman’s starting XI.

The 27-year-old stands at six foot one, is reasonably comfortable on the ball and also boasts decent athleticism.

While his statistics suggest he’s not a huge attacking threat, his wonder goal against Arsenal shows he does possess some technical ability and is perhaps more comfortable at getting forward from right-back than Holgate, who is naturally a centre-back.

Holgate took over from Coleman for the final nine matches last season, while Kenny only featured once last term and is expected to be behind both players in the pecking order.

Although both Martina and Holgate offer little goal threat, having averaged a shot every 591 and 228.83 minutes respectively last season, they provide a cheaper route into the Toffees’ backline – both have been valued at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Michael Keane and Ashley Williams, who are expected to form the centre-back partnership, both come in at 5.5, while left-back Leighton Baines is priced at 6.0.

There could be a small chance Koeman looks to experiment with a three-man defence though, as he did at times last season, which could see the likes of Tom Davies or James McCarthy, or even a more attacking player, fill in at right wing-back.

In goal, Jordan Pickford is available at 5.0, but with so many 4.5 options to choose from, and given Everton’s daunting opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun), he could well be ignored by many Fantasy managers when drawing up their Gameweek 1 squads.

But in a team which is pushing to break into the top six, the prospect of a starting defender at 4.5 will certainly be of interest when the fixture list turns favourably from Gameweek 6 onwards.

We perhaps shouldn’t bank on any assists from either player, though, with Martina only registering a key pass every 118.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Holgate (152.55).

Given the lack of attacking potential and the likelihood of clean sheets being at a premium over the opening five Gameweeks, the first month of the season will be more useful to see which player establishes themselves as first choice.

The additions of Pickford and Keane should improve an Everton defence that managed to keep 13 clean sheets last season, so with Coleman not expected to return until 2018, the starting right-back could provide FPL bosses with a great value option.

If that happens to be Martina, expect him to be a popular Fantasy asset once that tough start is out of the way.

I think that there is a larger interest in either 3 of the expensive forwards, or one of the cheaper forwards, or a 4-4-2. Some prefer Mane or Coutinho to Firmino if they are going to have a Liverpool attacker. Otherwise, I think he is a very viable choice at that price.

It looks good but I'm not sure about Pogba or Ozil. Ozil seems overpriced and Pogba is not a big goal scorer - he will only be of value if he gets freedom in a 4-3-3. 2 United attackers, despite their good start, might be overkill. I think they will be outscored by the other big teams.

I'd personally look at bringing in KDB for Ozil and downgrading Pogba - there are some very good 7s who will score very well this season and can be rotated as fixtures dictate.

I know many on here disagree with this method but I built from the front this season, focusing on fitting in the bigh hitters from the most lethal attacks and solid captain options

As such, I am on this so far

      Elliot/4.0
      Dunk/Yedlin/Schindler/4.0/4.0
      Alli/Salah/Pedro/Ince/Carroll
      Kane/Lacazette/Jesus OR Morata

The three playing defenders provide me with good fixtures (barring GW1) up until GW9, in which I will bring in a STK defender in place of Schindler which continues a trend of good fixtures each GW

My thought process was I'd rather miss out from a defender's haul than an attacker like Alli or LacazetteThoughts?

I honestly think it's horrible. You'll get so little points from your defenders, and your midfield is weaker than it should be. Ince is a bit of a punt, Laca might take a while to get going. Pedro could be Willian, Salah may also take a while to get started. You are also very vulnerable to rotation with two 4.0s and an uncertain goalkeeping situation. If you started with that, I expect you'll be wildcarding very early and playing catch up.

There is a fundamental failing in your logic, which has not accounted for points per 0.5, and has just sought to identity players who will score alot of points. You can't do well in this game without balance - Last season, 3 defenders scored 170 and over - only six forwards managed the same, two of whom were listed as midfielders at the time (Firm and King). The others were Kane, Lukaku, Costa and Aguero. There is far less difference in price between top range defenders (5.5-7) and low range (4.5), than forwards or even midfielders.

You will fail with this approach because you wont make points from your defence, and your midfield is not particularly special. Teams will have as good as a midfield, and just one less premium striking option, whilst retaining the balance (and points) in defence that you're missing.

And this is not even accounting for the likely upturn in scoring potential for defenders playing in wing back systems..

I agree with TM on most points to be fair.
It sounds like a good plan, but on paper, it needs more beef... *probably*.
(of course if you're set on it, there is a fine line between genius and madness - and this could be genius) - but your back 7 are setting you up for a fall.

Hey guys, please let me know what you think of this team.

      Foster (Elliot)
      Trippier/Lindelof/Milner/Ake (Dunk)
      Ramsey/Alli/Coutinho/Mhiki (RLC)
      Jesus/Lukaku (Fletcher)

      It's either...
      A - Mhiki and Fletcher
      B - Defoe and Carroll

Think Mhiki might score more in the easy early fixtures but not sure.

lose a 1.0 in backlin. At least stretch Fletcher to like Ayew at 5.0. Get to 6.0 and so many more options. IMO GL
Milner> Lind Ake> Francis gets it done just sayin. Great midfield.

Yeah, Milner is one I don't want to change because he is on pens and even though Liverpool don't get many clean sheets, he will probably get about 8 which means his score will go up a lot from last year.
I already have Lindelof, but might try something else to improve Fletcher.

I really like it tbh. If Miner is a regular starter then he will be a huge points scorer (I'd predict 165-180 if he starts every game). My issue would be double United in attack - they are not the most attacking and it's a risk, as is going without Kane. I wonder if it's worth downgrading Mkhit, who may not start regularly, to Willian and using the money elsewhere.
