Moving Target

Moving Target – Cuco Martina

Everton’s busy summer recruitment drive continued with the signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old penned a three-year contract with the Toffees and looks set to compete with Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny for the starting spot at right-back in the absence of the injured Seamus Coleman.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman expressed his delight at being able to bring in the versatile defender:

“Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important. It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad. I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.”

The History

After spending his youth career at Dutch side Feyenoord, Martina’s first experience of senior football came at lower league side RBC Roosendaal, where he spent three seasons.

Martina then moved to Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk and made 43 appearances between 2011 and 2013 before joining FC Twente in the summer of 2013.

He featured 48 times over the next two seasons, registering one goal and one assist, playing both at centre-back and right-back, before moving to Southampton in July 2015.

Martina played 15 league matches for Saints in 2015/16, producing one goal and one assist, but his first-team opportunities were limited under Claude Puel last season, making just nine league appearances.

The defender plays his international football for Curaçao and has racked up 32 caps since making his debut back in August 2011.

The Prospects

The serious knee injury suffered by Coleman meant that Everton were always likely to be in the market for an experienced right-back this summer and Martina now looks set to push hard for a place in Koeman’s starting XI.

The 27-year-old stands at six foot one, is reasonably comfortable on the ball and also boasts decent athleticism.

While his statistics suggest he’s not a huge attacking threat, his wonder goal against Arsenal shows he does possess some technical ability and is perhaps more comfortable at getting forward from right-back than Holgate, who is naturally a centre-back.

Holgate took over from Coleman for the final nine matches last season, while Kenny only featured once last term and is expected to be behind both players in the pecking order.

Although both Martina and Holgate offer little goal threat, having averaged a shot every 591 and 228.83 minutes respectively last season, they provide a cheaper route into the Toffees’ backline – both have been valued at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Michael Keane and Ashley Williams, who are expected to form the centre-back partnership, both come in at 5.5, while left-back Leighton Baines is priced at 6.0.

There could be a small chance Koeman looks to experiment with a three-man defence though, as he did at times last season, which could see the likes of Tom Davies or James McCarthy, or even a more attacking player, fill in at right wing-back.

In goal, Jordan Pickford is available at 5.0, but with so many 4.5 options to choose from, and given Everton’s daunting opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun), he could well be ignored by many Fantasy managers when drawing up their Gameweek 1 squads.

But in a team which is pushing to break into the top six, the prospect of a starting defender at 4.5 will certainly be of interest when the fixture list turns favourably from Gameweek 6 onwards.

We perhaps shouldn’t bank on any assists from either player, though, with Martina only registering a key pass every 118.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Holgate (152.55).

Given the lack of attacking potential and the likelihood of clean sheets being at a premium over the opening five Gameweeks, the first month of the season will be more useful to see which player establishes themselves as first choice.

The additions of Pickford and Keane should improve an Everton defence that managed to keep 13 clean sheets last season, so with Coleman not expected to return until 2018, the starting right-back could provide FPL bosses with a great value option.

If that happens to be Martina, expect him to be a popular Fantasy asset once that tough start is out of the way.

    RMT

    Foster
    Trips - Lindelöf - Cedric - Daniels
    Coutinho - Mhkitaryan - Willian
    Kane - Jesus - Lacazette

    Elliot - RLC - T. Carrol - Hünemeier

If Mhki can nail down a spot (or Perisic comes in at 8m) this provides good attacking 'coverage' and gets most of the big names in. If either of RLC or Carrol come good then options for a 4-man midfield.

Id go Trippier + Redmond from the start.
Trippier is a cheap way into spurs defence
Redmond has great opening fixtures. if he doesn't do it you can always swap him out or if you plan to wildcard early do it then.

    Just thinking about formation rotating....

Base team 3-3-2 of expensive, non rotated players, coupled with a 4 mil defender

Then have a 4.5 mid and 4.5 defender who rotate
Also a 5-6 mid and a 5-6 striker who rotate
    This means you'd go ...
3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 depending on fixtures, with a spare 4 mil defender in there to sometimes end up with 5 at the back

It would need much planning, but being flexible could be the way this year?

    1. Exdeo
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

5-6 premium strikers with huge potential this year, and good defs for first 4-5 games, so I think there's a space for 4-3-3. However I managed to pull off good old 3-4-3, with RLC and Carroll, I think it's worth it and I really like the team. And my 4th def will allow to switch to 4-3-3.

Yeah I agree with flexibility being of importance for this season. A lot of heavy hitters across all positions, feel it's going to be a season where we are going to have to be ruthless with the high priced players, chopping and changing between them.

At the moment I have similar thoughts, this is what I have came up with:

      Foster * Elliot
      Trippier * Lindelöf * Cedric * Daniels * 4.0
      Eriksen * De Bruyne * Özil * Pedro * Loftus-Cheek
      Lukaku * Firmino * Ayew

Ayew, RLC and Daniels rotate so that one is playing each week. Favorable home fixtures at least for 10+ weeks.

I think this is a bit weird. I own Lukaku, but in my heart of hearts I don't think he'll do well.
I'm not a fan of Mourinho and have always felt, no matter who he signs, he will remain negative. Even with Lukaku there I think they'll struggle to score goals.

I can see West Ham getting something on the first day and United being slow and useless, with Lukaku having the first touch of a brick wall.

They really are difficult to ignore. These kind of fixtures can't just be swept under the carpet. So do we go for someone like Mkhit?

Lukaku does well against smaller teams - it's worth a punt.

Its funny that we're talking about the main striker for Manchester UTD who scored 25 goals and came second amongst strikers in FPL last season in this light, but something just doesn't seem right. Weird that he's now considered a punt.

I'm not totally convinced either but ownership too high and fixtures too strong for me to ignore him. If he struggles it's an easy swap to another premium striker. If he hits the ground running and you don't have him it will hurt badly.

This, is the fundamental issue. Do you gamble and go with Jesus, Lacazette, or Morata, or play safe and stick with Lukaku. This decision could really separate the wheat from the chaff.

I have him in my team, but I share your doubts. However I think with so much ownership, a Lukaku fail wouldn't ruin my season, so I will give him a run in those early 'nice' fixtures. Will drop him like a stone if there is another striker flying high.

I think it depends on where you place your expectations. What would you consider a disappointing haul over, say, his first six games?

If people's baseline is something like 5g then sure, he'll end up as a disappointment. But he could return something like 3g, maybe an assist, and still be a useful fantasy player at that price based on his reliability of minutes and chances.

Its not just that I'm unsure on him, its the plethora of top top players all around that price bracket.
I suppose its what I think he'll score vs what I fear he'll score.

I'm in the same boat, don't really want him but am owning him out of fear of his high ownership. Not sure it is a great way to play the game but I don't want to fall massively behind the pack if he starts well, especially given his fixtures.

Fantasy would make for a more interesting game if ownership figures were unknown. Way too many people let ownership dictate their choices. If you didn't know the ownership who would u actually pick? Probably a half different team

RMT /10. Think I've cracked it. 4-4-2 not the best formation on FPL, but it suits the beginning of the season's fixtures.

    Foster ( Elliot )

De Bruyne / Alli / Coutinho / Phillips (RLC)
    Kane / Jesus (Fletcher)

Milner won't play in the midfield. Trust me, I watch every game and he doesn't fit in well. He will start at left back for sure and Robertson is a replacement for Moreno and one for the future and cup games.

    Jesus / Benteke (Rodriguez)

I wouldn't say so, he's competing with the Ox for the RWB spot. The Ox even started putting in some quality performances in the latter stages of last season, so I don't think he's nailed for sure.

The Ox can cross the ball for starters. As an Arsenal fan I love Bellerin, but I just think the Ox is more suited to that position, he even excelled on the left hand side in the FA cup final!

      Start again.

Comments here are too harsh mate. Go with Willian and Pedro if you want. Both good options. Willian is the weaker but more popular option of the two. If there's money int the bank, spend it now, I'd say, and I'd swap Bellerin to Kolasinac, unless you know something I don't, like Luke

Not sure what balance means for points exactly. A midfield doesn't have to be the same strength as another position. If Willian, Pedro and Ramsey are good picks individually, then why not together? This guy is picking players he likes like everyone else. All he needs to do to be a bit more sensivble is to downgrade a benchie, say Rodriguez (and maybe Forster or someone else by a shade) and upgrade a player in starting XI. Hoever all players in starting XI are already good value, so it's a case of increasing points output, and a case of realising that other people see certain players doing better and worse than others. Out job isn't to mould every team into the template.

    Ok lets try this

    Elliot

    Milner Trippier Cédric Lindelof Monreal

    Sane Coutinho Ramsey

    Kane Lukaku

Subs - Myhill Gayle Romeu Lofus Cheek

obviously this plan goes out the window if Newcastle get a replacement for the exciting Karl darlow.

    RMT

    Foster
    Kolasinic, Trippier, Cedric
    Sane, Alli, Willian, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Defoe

    Subs: Fabianski, RLC, Mee, Hünemeier

Feel like there's a pretty good balance.
Wish I could go for KDB, but didn't like the downgrade options of Defoe or Kolasinic.
