Moving Target

Moving Target – Cuco Martina

Everton’s busy summer recruitment drive continued with the signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old penned a three-year contract with the Toffees and looks set to compete with Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny for the starting spot at right-back in the absence of the injured Seamus Coleman.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman expressed his delight at being able to bring in the versatile defender:

“Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important. It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad. I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.”

The History

After spending his youth career at Dutch side Feyenoord, Martina’s first experience of senior football came at lower league side RBC Roosendaal, where he spent three seasons.

Martina then moved to Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk and made 43 appearances between 2011 and 2013 before joining FC Twente in the summer of 2013.

He featured 48 times over the next two seasons, registering one goal and one assist, playing both at centre-back and right-back, before moving to Southampton in July 2015.

Martina played 15 league matches for Saints in 2015/16, producing one goal and one assist, but his first-team opportunities were limited under Claude Puel last season, making just nine league appearances.

The defender plays his international football for Curaçao and has racked up 32 caps since making his debut back in August 2011.

The Prospects

The serious knee injury suffered by Coleman meant that Everton were always likely to be in the market for an experienced right-back this summer and Martina now looks set to push hard for a place in Koeman’s starting XI.

The 27-year-old stands at six foot one, is reasonably comfortable on the ball and also boasts decent athleticism.

While his statistics suggest he’s not a huge attacking threat, his wonder goal against Arsenal shows he does possess some technical ability and is perhaps more comfortable at getting forward from right-back than Holgate, who is naturally a centre-back.

Holgate took over from Coleman for the final nine matches last season, while Kenny only featured once last term and is expected to be behind both players in the pecking order.

Although both Martina and Holgate offer little goal threat, having averaged a shot every 591 and 228.83 minutes respectively last season, they provide a cheaper route into the Toffees’ backline – both have been valued at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Michael Keane and Ashley Williams, who are expected to form the centre-back partnership, both come in at 5.5, while left-back Leighton Baines is priced at 6.0.

There could be a small chance Koeman looks to experiment with a three-man defence though, as he did at times last season, which could see the likes of Tom Davies or James McCarthy, or even a more attacking player, fill in at right wing-back.

In goal, Jordan Pickford is available at 5.0, but with so many 4.5 options to choose from, and given Everton’s daunting opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun), he could well be ignored by many Fantasy managers when drawing up their Gameweek 1 squads.

But in a team which is pushing to break into the top six, the prospect of a starting defender at 4.5 will certainly be of interest when the fixture list turns favourably from Gameweek 6 onwards.

We perhaps shouldn’t bank on any assists from either player, though, with Martina only registering a key pass every 118.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Holgate (152.55).

Given the lack of attacking potential and the likelihood of clean sheets being at a premium over the opening five Gameweeks, the first month of the season will be more useful to see which player establishes themselves as first choice.

The additions of Pickford and Keane should improve an Everton defence that managed to keep 13 clean sheets last season, so with Coleman not expected to return until 2018, the starting right-back could provide FPL bosses with a great value option.

If that happens to be Martina, expect him to be a popular Fantasy asset once that tough start is out of the way.

    Thoughts on this 5-2-3 team

    Foster (Elliot)
    Alonso - Bailly - Trippier - Monreal - Cedric
    Coutinho - Sane
    Kane - Lukaku - King

    RLC - Carroll - Romeu

These 5-3-2/5-2-3 teams are interesting, but not sure id be brave enough to go with it myself, decent looking team but Monreal may not be nailed and King's output may be hampered by Defoe (and pens maybe too)

Let them do it, encourage them to try something different, but don't actually do it yourself, coz deep down you know it's wrong!

Think you need to go bigger with that third forward, I just don't think King cuts it this season. I would go no less than Defoe at 8.0 but would prefer a 10.5 in that spot.

    Hmm... Thoughts on this?

    Foster
    Trippier Lindelof Bertrand (4.0 x2)
    Alli Coutinho Sane Willian RLC
    Kane Lukaku (4.5)

Not very flexible but I don't mind it - undecided between this and 442.

Jrod is my punt for now, will watch him over the rest of the pre-season, but he could be a good shout for the 1st 3 games if he is nailed. Who would you replace Kompamy with? Man Utd defender would be good but not sure on who will start as CBs

I would punt Mounie instead of JRod. Nothing shows me Pulis has an offensive minded squad. I like Kompany, especially if you can't afford Walker. You know he will start and is key to that defense putting up CS. I wouldn't move him, but if you did and wanted a United defender, then Bailly would be selection.

I'd rather Willian/Pedro with Haz out.

Kante and Bakayoko will be monsters in the mid and Matic is currently still there too

Fab would come on at 60/75 to calm things down and create a bit of magic if needed.

Do we think Dwight Gayle can make the step up to Premier League quality this time around and become this years bargain fantasy option upfront?
He had a great championship campaign season just gone, especially at the beginning of the season.
Although he came second in the chase for the golden boot, theres more to it than it first seems.
He scored 23 goals and grabbed 2 assists, so he's pretty selfish, but then who cares. Although he came 4 goals behind Chris Wood, Gayle was out with a hamstring injury for 23 games.
Of the players who came joint second with him and Wood who top scored, his goals to mute ratio was a little bit special.
Wood: 27 goals @ 134 minutes per goal.
      Murray: 23 goals @ 150 mpg
      Abraham: 23 goals @ 149 mpg
      Gayle: 23 goals @93 mpg
I watched him live several times last season and he's a real confidence player, once he starts scoring, he just keeps going, and has a great goals to minute ratio as shown above. At 6.5m and pretty decent fixtures from game week 2 (he could just be benched against Spurs if you so desire) he could provide not only a bargain option full of goals, but provide more goals and more points throughout the rest of your team with all that extra money.

Who has him their team, will you start with him, or see him as an easy switch as he's so cheap?

The reason I won't own him is due to formation. There are so many premium forwards this year (Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Aguero, Morata, Lacazette...) that I want to take three bites at that particular cherry. Plus, I think that I can find value in the 6.0-7.0 midfield bracket that can cover Gayle (6.5) in terms of points.

It's also worth noting, using that particular statistic, that in his 3 years of playing in the PL his minutes per goal were 257 (15/16), 219 (14/15), and 127 (13/14).

As a high-risk, high-reward prospect, though, he's an interesting player.

I think he is a great option - I'm not accommodating him in my current build, in part because 7.0 mids are so tempting, but he is a definite consideration. I think he will manage at least 1 in 3 if he is a regular starter, and end up with 13-15 goals.

You need 3 fwds and anybody else lower than 6.5mill was a complete waste of cash. So went that bit higher to get him due to early fixtures and wouldn't want to waste potential transfer to get him in. It's a damage limitations pick.

Maybe Zaha? He got 7 goals, 11 assists last time out. It wouldn't shock me if Lanzini or Stanislas got into double figures either, though I'd prefer Zaha to either of them.

In the early stages Willian stands out, and Ramsey perhaps. I think Lanzini can offer good value going forward, and Zaha too.

Willian, for example, scored 114 points from 1534 minutes last season. That included 8 goals and 3 assists, and the extra points that come with those goals and clean sheets. Starting with him, when he is pretty certain to start the opening games, seems alot safer than Gayle, especially given his role as a set piece taker.

Zaha managed 7 goals and 11 assists and 149 points, despite being absent during the winter. No promoted striker scored as many points- and only 7? strikers managed more.

I'd expect Lanzini to kick on this season - he managed 8 goals last season, but I think he will thrive in a Payet less set up and with a better striker in front. I could well see him managing 11/12 goals and half a dozen assists.

You need a third forward too. JRod? You believe he can actually return to form at WBA? I don't see it happening. Rondon didn't flourish last year up top, I don't see how JRod can be successful. Agree at 6.0 the forwards are thin and many are a risk, Berahino isn't much brighter of a option. I do like Mounie from HUD in certain matches

Aww cheers mate! I have Jesus and Lacazette. And KDB is my only premium mid. I like Sane but I'm trying to avoid risk, except a few calulated bets, like Jesus and Laca! I don't see the point in paying an exta 1.0 for Kun until we know he's nailed and scoring more than Jesus to be honest. Even Sane could end up being better value than Kun, so it's a wait and see policy for me.

Personally think Sane is way under-valued providing he's not rotated....Pep said he sees him as the future Messi (to paraphrase)...

KDB at 10 is bang on but can't help thinking Sane is good value, especially when KDB is likely assisting (in his new deep role)!

Jesus Laca Kane KDB all in is strong - £43.5ml ouch! £5ml average cost for the rest is also ouch!

You're right about Sane. But what if he only starts 3 of the first 5 games. It's going to be very frustrating. My guess is that this is less likely to happen to Jesus and KDB, and that they will get more points. The value may be the same, better or worse, but almost certainly worse if Sane misses a hige chunk of minutes.

However, you shouldn't respect my opinion on this, because I have no idea who really should be nailed. If Sane is nailed then I'd believe it and be annoyed I didn't pick him.

I like him, but can't fit him in my 15-man squad without making concessions elsewhere. I think there are other solid options in the midfield, but I like the prospect KDB carries this season to post another 20+ assist season and possibly add to the goal tally

I've got him atm - It's a question of at least one of KDB, Jesus and Sane for me, as I think City will win the league and score the most goals. I think Jesus is the best of the three, in terms of attacking talent, but that KDB will play the most when fit.

That may well be true. I don't buy into cover, but there happens to be many City assests I'm interested in, even when excluding players who are at a high risk of rotation. I have KDB, Jesus and Kompany at the moment, but I'm still interested in Walker and a LB

That is the issue with the big 3 up front IMO. Even if you go cheap in defence you are relying on some cheap and often unreliable (Ramsey, Zaha) midfielders to score big points. It might be better to drop Lacazette for Defoe and upgrade the midfield:

                Foster
                Trippier - Cedric - Francis
                Pogba - Coutinho - Sane - Ritchie

Carroll is a possibility, but so is James McArthur, scored 93 last season but it's yet to be seen if Loftus Cheek will crack the starting lineup. I think Carroll's chance improves if Sigurdsson departs. Not sure I want to rely on my 4th midfielder at 4.5 though. Colback and Romeu are also possibility depending on playing time.

Torn between 442 and 343. Just not sure I have the guts to go 442. Both teams look balanced, although 343 maybe offers more flexibility with transfers...

            4-4-2

            Foster
            Azpilicueta, Trippier, Lindelöf, Cédric
            Coutinho, Sané, Willian, Ramsey
            Kane, Lukaku, Murphy

            Myhill, Mee, T.Carroll, £4.5m

            3-4-3

            Foster
            Trippier, Lindelöf, Bertrand
            Sané, Willian, Ramsey, Zaha
            Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

Have 20m to spend on a Manchester duo. What's the best combination?
            Pogba/Mkhi/Sane - Lukaku/Jesus/Kun?

I think I will make a choice based on who is on pens. It's got to be on of Pogba/Lukaku for ManU and Jesus/Kun for ManC

Valencia a bit too expensive for me. I was thinking of a midfield-attack combo

I think 20-21mil is enough for the both clubs in attack. This was about an attacking duo only, I have Lindelof also.

How is this 3-5-2 set up looking thus far... I think there are many positives for all formations personally, but imo 352 seems a better option atm

            Foster
            Lindelof Cedric Tripper
De Bruyne Alli Redmond Willian Ince

I see your thinking but the counter point would be that a £6m/£6.5m defender would score more than midfielders of the same price - in this case Redmond & Ince. There's a good argument the likes of Azpi & Milner could get more points.

I have a very similar squad with Salah and Ramsey for Alli and Ince and no Lindelof. Only reservation is Lacazette playing on Friday night and potential immediate price rise if he is potent. Cannot have them all though

My original draft had lukaku Lacazette and Jesus in it.... But thought having Kane and lukaku to start would be wiser as they are more proven, and easier to downgrade to the likes of Jesus and Lacazette if needed.

Why is Ramsey so popular early season on FPL? A serious player, how nailed will he be and what position?

When Sigurdsson signs for Everton who will be the freetakers, penalty takers?

Who are the likely Huddersfield and Brighton strikers? Mounie is puntable. Murray is effective, used to be on Palace pens. Both teams cannot afford playing a blanket defence, known as attacking and need each goal to stay up.

Central mid with licence to roam forward. Underlying stats for late last season suggest he could score big.

Surely it has to be Rooney?

Not an expert on these teams but Mounie and Murray, both of whom I will be ignoring.

If Siggy signs then you've got 3 choices for pens & fks, Sandro, Rooney and Siggy. I can't see Baines and Mirallas doing anything there. Mirallas may get corners but again I think Siggy would be better.
