Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Manchester United’s in-form strikers seal the deal against their hometown rivals, while West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini again displays his Fantasy credentials just as new Fantasy options in the Hammers’ camp appear on the horizon.

Here are yesterday’s notes…

Manchester City 0 Manchester United 2

Two goals in as many minutes, from Romelu Lukaku and then Marcus Rashford, settled a Manchester derby held in the decidedly un-Manchester setting of Houston.

United struggled to convert their chances last year. The pre-season form of their two strikers – three goals for Rashford, back-to-back strikes for Lukaku – suggests a new dawn for Jose Mourinho’s men.

The Belgian struck first, latching on to a Paul Pogba ball over the top, taking it round the on-rushing Ederson and finishing impressively from a tight angle.

Rashford’s goal, set up by the in-form Henrikh Mkhitaryan, finished a rapid break so rare in last season’s United, reliant as they were on the rather less pacey qualities of frontman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

This was City’s first pre-season match – United have now played three – and it showed.

Mourinho was certainly happy with his team’s summer preparations when he spoke post-match, particularly regarding Lukaku’s integration into the side.

“The market is open until 31 August, but I like to work from day one. The difference between Lukaku arriving on day one or 29 August is huge.”

At least Pep Guardiola would have been pleased to give starts to new signings Kyle Walker and Ederson, even if the keeper’s mis-timed charge from the area was a major factor in the opening goal.

The City manager later confirmed that Aleksander Kolarov will be leaving the club, with Roma the left-back’s likely destination.

“I don’t like working with people who don’t want to stay. He has a big chance to go to Roma. He has said he wants to leave. I wish him all the best.”

That leaves Guardiola with even fewer options at full-back, with Fernandinho filling in on the left of the back four against United.

Both sides played with back fours and lone strikers. United lining up in a 4-2-3-1 with Mkhitaryan in a No 10 role and Rashford deployed on the left of the attacking three. Juan Mata missed out with a knock.

That system, while helping both Rashford and Mkhitaryan stand out, did shackle Pogba’s attacking potential on the night. That will be a concern for his 19.2% ownership who will doubtless be relying on the Frenchman to be relinquished of defensive duties next season.

Despite being deprived the central striker role, Rashford was keen to talk up United’s attacking flexibility pre-match.

“I think different games require different tactics and having two up front gives the manager one extra thing he can use. It’s not only me and Romelu, we can play with Anthony and Romelu and others, we have a few different options we can play. This just widens our chances of glory next season.”

Mourinho also talked up the tactical options at his disposal…

“We have had three friendly matches and we play with three different systems. Today we played with a number 10 and we are working, we are developing the team.”

But Mourinho’s options at the back remain troublesome for Fantasy managers.

“In this game we played Eric with Jones, Smalling with Lindelof. The next game will be Lindelof with another one, and Bailly with another one.”

Lindelof is currently the most popular FPL option – claiming an ownership of 16.8% so far – though we are far from clear on the pecking order or even the shape that Mourinho will use come the season kick-off against West Ham.

In attack, Lukaku’s impressive pre-season will be killing doubts over his credentials.

His superbly taken goal will only cement his status as a go-to option for our attacks. More than 45% have gone with the 11.5-priced Lukaku, while just 5.0% have looked to Rashford (7.5).

Should both keep on scoring, however, Rashford would not easily be dismissed, even from a support role on the flank.

There is a far more testing dilemma in the City forward line.

Guardiola has talked before of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus working in tandem up front. But in Houston, the pair merely played in different halves.

The cheaper Jesus – priced at 10.5 to Aguero’s 11.5 – is currently winning the battle for Fantasy hearts, with 15.1% ownership compared to the Argentinian’s 9.7%. The remaining pre-season encounters will doubtless tell us more.

For now at least, the smart money is on strikers from the other side of Manchester, with United’s more attractive opening schedule and their fine pre-season form among the reasons for that.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Adarabioyo (Mangala 46), Kompany (Stones 46), Fernandinho, De Bruyne (Otamendi 46), Yaya Toure (Diaz 46), Sterling (Nasri 46), Roberts (Sane 46), Foden (Zinchenko 75), Aguero (Jesus 46).

Manchester United XI: De Gea (Romero 46); Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 78), Lindelof (Bailly 46), Smalling (Jones 46), Blind (Darmian 46); Herrera (Fellaini 62), Pogba, Rashford (Martial 62), Mkhitaryan (Carrick 62), Lingard (A. Pereira 77); Lukaku.

West Ham United 2 Fulham 1

West Ham edged a London derby in the decidedly un-London setting of the Sportzentrum Graz-Weinzodl, Austria, thanks to goals from Manuel Lanzini and Ashley Fletcher.

New signing Joe Hart didn’t make a squad expected to be considerably boosted by the arrivals of Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez over the next few days.

That could have a major impact on the Fantasy appeal of Lanzini (7.0), who will have new competition from Arnautovic – also priced at 7.0 – in the Hammers’ midfield.

The Argentinian took the opportunity to further his case in Austria, opening the scoring after 14 minutes after being set up by Fletcher, who then doubled the advantage when he dispossessed Fulham keeper David Button and rolled the ball into the empty net.

New signing Pablo Zabaleta again enjoyed a 45-minute run-out, as did skipper Mark Noble as he continues to recover from surgery on an abdominal issue.

But it is the Lanzini situation that will be of most interest to Fantasy managers. The midfielder is currently in 7.3% of Fantasy Premier League squads, making him the most popular West Ham asset.

The arrival of Arnautovic, owned by just 0.7%, could well put a dent in that popularity, particularly if the Austrian takes over set-piece duties, although Noble is likely to remain on spot-kicks.

Another popular FPL pick, the 6.5%-owned Robert Snodgrass, will also move further down the midfield pecking order should Arnautovic sign.

What is clear from this sudden rush of talent to the club is that West Ham now look considerably better equipped to take advantage of their opening schedule. While Bilic’s side face three away matches over the first four Gameweeks, only a first-day trip to Man United and a Gameweek 6 home clash with Spurs look particularly troublesome.

West Ham XI: Randolph (Adrian 46), Byram (Zabaleta 46), Ogbonna (Collins 46), Rice (Burke 46), Cresswell (Masuaku 46), Cullen (Makasi 77), Lanzini (Noble 46), Makasi (Obiang 46), Feghouli (Ayew 46), Holland (Snodgrass 46), Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Can someone give me a non-biased opinion on Morata? Admittedly I didn't want him or Lukaku, I wanted Belotti, but would be good to know if he actually seems any good?

I've been digging into the numbers and watching a lot of his game history recently, for the Chelsea team preview on WGTA (coming soon!). To condense my thoughts for here, I'll try to break this down into qualitative (watching him play) and quantitative (looking at his stats) observations:

Even though he cuts a pretty imposing figure (he's 6'3, and pretty strong on the ball), he doesn't play with nearly the same physicality as Diego Costa (or previous Chelsea frontmen such as Drogba or Lukaku). His game (at RM at least) was based more upon link-up play and movement. He seems like an extremely intelligent player - his movement off the ball to make space for others is excellent - perhaps due to the time he spent on the wing earlier in his career. He's more of a run-the-channels, run-into-space striker than a traditional hold-up-the-play, bounce-off-a-defender number 9.

Quantitatively, his goalscoring record is really impressive. Last season, he notched 15 goals in La Liga (20 overall) in a little over 1300 minutes. That's basically 1 goal per 90 (88.9 mins/goal), which compares well to players like Harry Kane (87.3) and Gabriel Jesus (92.9) in the PL last year. Obviously, this comes with a huge caveat - he was mainly playing as a substitute, in situations where either the opposition where chasing (so there were more counterattacking opportunites for RM) or Madrid were throwing men forward looking for a winner (which again, increased goalscoring opportunities). But he's a good finisher, so if Chelsea can make chances I would fancy him to continue putting them away.

As a prospect, I think he's a really good B+ level striker - not quite an all-world talent the way that Aguero, Drogba and the like have been in the PL previously, but more than good enough to score something in the range of 15-25 goals this season.

      Sorry for the long post!

        Great post! Thanks!

Reckon he will link up more with Cesc then? Manager needs to play to his strength and that sort of build up play will be more his type of thing than having wide men swing balls in

He's exactly the kind of player who, in theory, would work perfectly with a playmaker like Cesc, or any kind of player with good vision and the ability to play those long, incisive through-balls. My concern with Fabregas is going to be minutes. I can't foresee Conte cutting minutes for Kante - he was immense last season. And having dropped 40 million on Bakayoko, is he really going to be bringing him off the bench? I don't see it.

I worry that Fabregas is going to be reduced to an impact sub again - and that's just a killer for fantasy.

I loved Drogba. Thought he was class. But if Morata scores between 15-25 a season as you say then thats a superior record to Drogba - who in 9 seasons at Chelsea scored more than 12 goals in only 2 of those seasons.

Yeah, though Drogba's career numbers fluctuate bizarrely from season to season (that 29 goal campaign, for instance, is I think well above any expectations we should have for Morata). A 15 goal floor seems fair to me, though: Defoe & Llorente each scored 15 times in the PL last season, for example, and I think Chelsea fans would feel pretty glum if their 60M signing couldn't match that.

Morata has a comparable record to Lacazette considering he has played in better quality leagues. On that count you'd expect 10.5. Although logic suggests that he should be priced the same as Costa who is a proven, successful PL striker and the man he is replacing. 10.0 or 10.5 I think, more than that and he'll be clearly over-priced.

You obviously know little about Costa at Chelsea. He hasn't wanted to be there pretty much ever since he joined. He moans about the English weather. He hardly speaks any English after 3 seasons in England. He refuses to adjust his game to what the manager wants and is provocative in the extreme.

Conte didn't handle the issue well in the summer but he was provoked one time too many and he doubtless didn't expect Costa to go public with the communication.

Costa is a very good player when he feels like it but he is also a liability. What kind of professional is it that comes back after a summer off having gained almost a stone in weight? Chelsea will be better off when he is gone.

None of us know the true story of Costa as we only know what we read in the media, which is often just sensationalist drivel

He gave his all for Chelsea, and was at his best when getting "stuck in" They would not have won the title without him

I have supported Chelsea for 40 years, know people that work there, see them live pretty often and also get to see lots of interviews on Chelsea TV that most others don't. So I think I am reasonably well-informed.

The fact that you may not know something doesn't mean no-one does, TL.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

In your early FPL teams who is your flexible friend- that is in your squad as he offers strong prospect of returns -but you are happy to jettison to hop aboard an emerging bandwagon.

There will be some players in your squad, that barring injury, are nailed on. Kane may be one, or maybe its Lukaku.

But what of that player who you have some reservations about and are happy to ditch to chase a lucrative bandwagon?

So for me its KDB - 10m - happy to own. Could be a gold mine....but given Pep's rotation and City players sharing points I'm also more than happy to swap him out for an emerging Liverpool player, Alli, Eriksen or even a surprise like say Ozil. His price tag allows me to do that. He's my flexible friend....although, granted, he's not supple enough to help squeeze Sanchez in my side.

        Really clever stuff, Jonty.

Going for the top end of the midfielder and 3rd striker market (Defoe) so you can downgrade quickly with just 1 transfer to an emerging in-form player.

Is flexibility the key to FPL success in your experience? Have you had a very flexible team in the seasons you have done well?

Yes. I wasn't very flexible early last season - well, that went well 😉

Have been very flexible at the start previously.

Best example was one season I started with Rooney and Lampard - it was another can't have them all eason. Lampard was a slight injury risk and rooney - well was starting his slide. That season - from GWK 1 it became clear that Chelsea was all about Malouda feeding Drogba....I took a hit for GWK 2 - Lamp and Rooney out for Malouda and Drogba - that new pair kept scoring for another 4-5 gwks. Best hit I've ever spent - but also shows you have to be flexible.

KDB fits the bill for me - to get the next Malouda.

Realistically, if I don't see returns from Ramsey & Salah, I'll be looking to switch. Aguero is my route into Kane, so if he looks out of form or gets dropped.....he's gone

Willan & Sane my two flexible fellas.

Rashford is tempting me after these pre-season performances, could be a real steal at 7.5. Third striker is currently Gayle which, at 6.5, doesn't offer much in terms of flexibility. Might have a tinker and try free up a milli somewhere.

I am not so sure about Rashford. I owned him for many weeks last season and he was a huge disappointment. I think he may do better against top 6 teams, where his pace is used on the counter.

I think this season could be the start for Rashford, Jose trusts him and I think he is going to be an incredible player in years to come. We will see, but I hope this is the case!
My only problem is I don't really fancy Lukaku & Rashford in my team, 2 forwards from a Mourinho side looks like FPL suicide! -even if the stats do look somewhat promising.

I don't intend on starting the season with all of it in the bank, just haven't decided who is worth spending it on yet - I find it's easier at this stage to keep it in reserve and then spend it when I decide who I really want, rather than have to try to downgrade someone I thought I'd start with (if any of that makes sense!)

Have a front 3 of Kane, Lacaz and Jesus.

Jesus in biggest danger of the chop as I may downgrde him to someone like Austin, if he's likely to play leaving me with serious cash to strengthen elsewhere. And may wait until after GW1 to see if Austin does start and jump on a bandwagon that may appear in midfield.

Lacaz is captain for GW1 but if he doesn't produce he will go.

My back 5 is set for 10 weeks, then I plan to WC for the following 9 weeks, then WC again in jan for 2nd half if necessary. will use the free hit chip for a DGW, bench boost for a smaller DGW and triple captain when it takes my fancy.

Any chance of a RMT? Altered this a few times and will no doubt do so again before GW1, but this is one of the better teams I've done so far (in my opinion at any rate).

    Forster (Elliot)
    Cedric-Ake-Luiz-Trippier (Hunemeir)
    Zaha-Fabregas-Coutinho (RLC-Carroll)
    Kane-Lacazette-Jesus

Fabregas is most likely to be swapped out, probably for Willian. Waiting to see Morata's value as well.

Not bad at all. You rely on SOU def i wouldnt although it could give you cs points. Fab and Zaha risky but both decent at that price. I would probably do Cedric and Fabregas out for Bellerin and Ince.

With the exception of Utd in GW7, Southampton's first 11 games are all ranked 1 or 2 on the difficulty ranking. Bit of a risk given their indifferent form last time out, but Cedric has high ownership. Ideally would save two transfers for GW12 as they do ramp up after that. Like the idea of Bellerin, but mid is already quite reliant on the starting 3; Ince would leave it a bit weak.

Thanks! Any recommendations on 4.5 defs? Maybe Dunk and Mee. And I might swap Bailly in if his starting place becomes 100% guaranteed, but both he and Kompany seem to get niggly injuries a lot, whereas Luiz played almost every game. Plus he's got potential to be penalty taker with Hazard out.

A lot of money invested up front. Jesus is still a bit of an unknown quantity and teams will have wised up to him a bit from last year.

Forster and Luiz out for Foster and Lindlof, and then the extra million upgrading Fab to Pedro? Or swap Zaha for Knockheart/Ritchie (depending on injury) and then fab for Pedro?

I will likely look to get a Utd defender in, but there seems to be concern over who's starting.

Not convinced of Rashford as a fantasy asset just yet. Remember that he was used to do most of Zlatan's running last season and that didn't translate to much by way of fantasy points. I don't see it being any different this season with him and Lukaku.

I think he is defo one to watch. He's been working really hard over summer and will score a lot more goals this year than last year. Jose loves him but he will still be swapped out with martial/mikhi/mata/perisic (tbc) etc so not guaranteed starts. If he looks nailed then will be a real bargain. But it's also hard to look past Luka as his ownership will be huge and I think he will deliver big points

How are people feeling about Hernandez at West Ham?

My only memory of him is that he seemingly always scored when he came off the bench. Is this me reflecting with a rose tint?

If he comes in reasonably priced I'll definitely consider bringing him in (and probably jettisoning Firmino who I'm already having doubts about).

I think he is a good signing for West Ham. He seems to start well for a new club but then tail off. Certainly he was far less effective last season for Leverkusen compared to his first year there.

If he plays regularly then I can see him getting 12 goals and 3 assists.

    Foster
    Milner - Trippier - Cedric - Francis
    Alli - Willian - Redmond
    Aguero - Lukaku - Lacazette

    Myhil - Naughton - Chalobah - T.Carroll

If Milner looks to lose his LB spot I could downgrade to a 6.0 then upgrade Cedric to Bertrand.

My mate who won our league at a canter last year (70 points ahead of 2nd; 180 ahead of me) has always based his teams around cheaper strikers, freeing up money for a dominant midfield and a solid defence. Last time out he spent a lot of the season with combinations of Deeney, Rondon, Benteke, Rashford, Carroll, Llorente, Origi. I don't believe he ever had a more expensive striker than Benteke, but this meant he had a midfield of Sanchez, Mane, Alli, Coutinho etc and a defence of Alonso, Courtois, Cahill, Walker for long parts of the season. Up til last year he'd never really breached 3rd place in our league, but after leading the league from GW3 I'm wondering if he was on to something.
Problem is this year seems to just have so many striking options that feel necessary to crowbar in at the expense of other positions.

So basically, whats the verdict on either going all on on strikers (I currently have Kane, Jesus and Lacazette) and trying to have a few solid mids and then cheap backups, or going reasonable midrange strikers (Benteke, Ihenacho if he moves, Hernandez, Gabbiadinni) and putting the spare money into the midfield and defense?

Sorry for long post; as you've probably guessed, he was a bit insufferable last season.

I think last season thought us that mids were better than strikers when it comes to FPL (generally). However, every season is different and this season there seems to be better striker options and the switch to 3 CBs for most clubs makes the wing-backs oh so tempting too.

There were lots of GW's last year where his strikers literally did nothing week in week out, but Sanchez in particular and the fact he jumped on the Chelsea defence train quicker than anyone else bailed him out a lot. I don't know why but I have a tough time seeing Sanchez replicating that form, and Hazard is out for at least the first month. History would suggest it was a bit of a fluke, as he pulled out a basically insurmountable lead before any really great striker emerged, Costa aside. There seems to be lots of solid midfield options this year, but it just feels like until we know who emerges as the really dominant ones, the strikers form a safer bet. Past few years it has also normally taken a bit for the defenses to really gel; it seemed like few teams were keeping clean sheets for the first two months of last year.

It's going to be mighty difficult integrating a big hitter from each of the top 5 teams this year with the price rises. How does one reconcile Kane, Lukaku, Alli, Jesus/Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez, Salah/Mane/Cout, Alonso in a single team? It's darn near impossible, I do believe. We have a very interesting FPL season waiting upon the horizon, I suspect. With so many "essential" players at such high price tags I think more than ever this season will be one without a set template. Indeed, there will likely be multiple templates or rather reliable player combinations because fitting them all in will just not be financially possible.
