Moving Target – Kurt Zouma

With Crystal Palace appearing to have stolen a march on Stoke City in the race to sign Bruno Martins Indi, the Potters have bolstered their centre-back options by signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes revealed the Potters fought off interest from a number of clubs from across Europe to secure the services of Zouma, who is looking for regular first-team football following a serious knee injury:

“We have prioritised adding further strength in depth to defensive positions this summer, and we have certainly done that by fending off any number of clubs who were all interested in taking Kurt on loan… On his day he is one of the most impressive defenders in the league, and while injury unfortunately hampered his progress at Chelsea last season, we are certain that we can give him the platform to recapture the form he showed prior to his setback.”

The History

Zouma linked up with Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne at the age of 15  and made his professional debut in a cup match against Bordeaux in August 2011, aged 16.

He made 22 league appearances during the 2011/12 season, scoring twice, and was part of the side that lifted the Coupe de la Ligue in 2012/13.

In total, Zouma played 74 times for Saint-Etienne in all competitions, producing four goals and two assists.

In January 2014, Zouma joined Chelsea in a deal believed to be worth around £12 million, though he only linked up with the Blues ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

He made 15 league appearances during his first season at Stamford Bridge and was part of the squad that won the Premier League title.

It was during the following season that Zouma really established himself in the Chelsea side, starting 21 of the first 25 matches before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

That injury, along with the form of the Chelsea defence last season, meant Zouma has made just nine league appearances since.

Zouma represented France at all levels from U16s to U21s, before making his senior debut against Denmark in March 2015 – one of just two appearances he has made for the national team.

The Prospects

Zouma is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), so it’s unlikely the Frenchman will feature prominently in our seasons.

The 22-year-old does offer a set-piece threat – during the 2015/16 season he averaged a shot every 112.8 minutes.

But his goalscoring record, just seven goals in his career so far, doesn’t appear to justify the outlay, particularly bearing mind the Potters only kept 11 clean sheets last term.

Value can certainly be found elsewhere in the Stoke defence, though.

Glen Johnson, Phil Bardsley and Geoff Cameron are available at 4.5, while Jack Butland, Erik Pieters and Ryan Shawcross come in at 5.0.

Much will depend on what formation Hughes opts for.

The Potters’ boss generally favoured a four-man backline last term, but he did at times experiment with a three-man defence.

In a back four, Zouma and Shawcross look the favourites to start in central defence if Martins Indi doesn’t end up at the bet365 Stadium, with Cameron and perhaps Marc Muniesa options in a three-man backline.

Cameron is certainly an interesting prospect as he is also in the running to start in a defensive midfield role, although new signing Darren Fletcher is expected to be a starter in the middle of the park.

In terms of Zouma’s defensive numbers, he impressively won all eight of his tackles last season, and 81% during the 2015/16 campaign.

By comparison, Shawcross only won 75% of his tackles last time out.

Looking at Zouma’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 11.42 minutes in 2015/16, which was inferior to Shawcross (9.91) last term.

However, Zouma earned Baseline Bonus System Points (BPS) – that is BPS without goals, assists and clean sheets – at a rate of a point every 3.7 minutes. An outstanding return which easily bettered Shawcross (7.6 minutes).

Looking back a season, Zouma – who made 23 appearances for Chelsea – earned Baseline BPS every 6.5 minutes compared with Shawcross’ 7.2.

That would indicate that the new loanee will have a say when it comes to BPS and bonus points in a Stoke clean sheet scenario.

However, even that data does little to justify the extra spend on Zouma, with Butland and Shawcross, providing he shakes off a back problem, likely to offer stronger value.

Fantasy managers will hope pre-season provides some clues as to who will be the first-choice right-back between Johnson and Bardsley, although Mame Biram Diouf’s ability to operate at right wing-back is a worry should Hughes adopt a three-man defence.

There could also be some uncertainty on the opposite flank, with summer signing Josh Tymon set to put pressure on Pieters for the left-back berth.

In any case, Stoke’s opening fixtures (eve, ARS, wba, MUN, new, CHE) mean Potters assets are unlikely to be in demand.

Those early matches should provide us with the chance to assess how Stoke will line up this season, with investment likelier when Hughes’ men embark on a more favourable run from Gameweek 9 onwards.

As for Chelsea, new signing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen look to be the rotation options in central defence for Antonio Conte, with John Terry and Nathan Ake having departed this summer.

It has also been mooted that Conte could be open to changing to a four-man defence on occasion this season, something that will certainly need to be monitored.

But in terms of Stoke, the power and athleticism of Zouma should certainly complement the experience of Shawcross. And once the Chelsea loanee gets a run of matches under his belt, his presence could boost the appeal of the entire backline.

But until the schedule eases, and we see how the Potters line up, Fantasy managers are likely to take a watching brief before pinpointing the optimum route into the Stoke rearguard.

They aren't right most times though, not to my thinking.

The template thinking produces consistent results but that alone won't propel a player to the highest heights.

Do reach those you have to do things that many consider to be a risky or bad move to be ahead of a curve.

Otherwise we would all be so much closer to the top.

Consistency does propel people to the top. Every winner has consistent scores throughout the season, with rare red arrows

Of course they have bumper scores now and then - probably more than others who play it "too safe" - but the theme of consistency gets them a win

It's all a balancing act. With the ownership tactic, people called me dull, boring and too safe... all while I had the likes of big differentials in my team like Luiz and Snodrass (at Hull)

Zero, I'm happy to get any advice. I won't blindly follow advice of an OR 1, so overall rank just doesn't matter when asking A/B questions. I like and value A/B questions more for it means people are putting time into their team and are studying each position as opposed to a RMT which basically is 90% template.

I'll look, once in a while, but more if somebody starts to invoke the "It's right because I'm a great player" card. Mostly I'll just read their comments, sometimes reply, and let it stew with all the other firehose of information and opinions.

Anyone considered Bench Boost in GW1

It was discussed on the FFS Podcast at the end of last season. If i recall, Mark liked the idea but said he didnt have the balls to do it, AZ called it Maverick and Jonty pointed out that the teams are not known at that point.

There does seem to be some merits to it though

    GW1 BB
    Pros:
    - Can set you team up as you want from the start
    - Player changes are more volatile in GW1-3 so long term players are not needed and can be used for Bandwagons
    - WC is GW4 to set your "real" line-up
    - can afford to have a more even spread of player values thus reaping valid points from your subs
    Cons:
    - No double points from the bench in a DGW
    - Uncertain Team line ups in GW1
    - Will suck if it doesn't deliver points as everyone else will still have theirs

    DGW
    Pros:
    - double the points from the bench
    Cons:
    - Rotation risk, no guarantee player will play both games
    - Bench will likely consist of low value players
    - have to restructure your team for that one week and you are left with that team for the run-in GWs (around 35-38) unless you use transfers and hits do get it back into a decent shape
    - encouraged to pick up players you wouldn't ordinarily play (possibly STK, WBA, BHA, HUD, NEW etc)

I took a look at the fixtures for the first 3 weeks. The teams with the best fixtures were ARS, CHE, CP, HUD, MCI, MUN, NEW, SOU, TOT, WAT WBA.

of those the following had Home games to GW1 and GW3.
CHE, CP, MUN, SOU, WAT, WBA

So a potential GW1 bench boost could look like this:
    Forster SOU home to SWA
    Foster WBA home to BOU
    Dann CP home to HUD
    Lindelof MUN home to WHU
    Bellerin ARS home to LEI
    Dawson WBA home to BOU
    Cedric SOU home to SWA
    Willian CHE home to BUR
    Mkhitaryan MUN home to WHU
    Zaha CP home to HUD
    Redmond SOU home to SWA
    Capoue WAT home to LIV
    Lukaku MUN home to WHU
    Lacazette ARS home to LEI
    Benteke CP home to HUD

Other than CHE away to TOT in GW2 and ARS away to LIV in GW3 the fixtures for all these players is nice right up until using the WC after GW3.

Anyone even considered this as a strategy ?

Interested in other possible pros and cons and any stories of successes and failures of using it in the past.

Not a chance. Too much uncertainty about lineups and don't know how close to form people may be. And you are in the end, limiting yourself to a potential of four extra scores instead of eight extra scores. There's no benefit to being out ahead of the pack in GW1, unless you just want to screenshot it, if everybody else is going to haul you in by the end of the season. Chip is too valuable to use when there are that many variables on the table

    4. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

There are a lot of merits to it and I am considering it.

The average score from the BB in the top 12 finishers in the OR last season was 20 points. The average in the top 20k was c. 16.4 points. That's the kind of range you probably want to be shooting for.

But that doesn't tell the whole story. By playing it in GW1 you eliminate any need to compromise the way you use the 2nd wildcard and you also avoid any need to take even a single hit to prepare the BB or to recover your team from it afterwards.

There are also downsides to a GW1 BB - team selection may be less certain and you are on the minimum budget at that time. But it is the only week of the entire season when you can, in effect, wildcard and BB in the same week. So your BB is adjustable right up to deadline.

Personally I reckon that if you can get 12-18 points from it in GW1 you'll be winning big time because of the gains you make later by freeing the 2nd wildcard up.

it might still be worth using the wc before the DGW as you'll still like to have double games from your main 11 and also set it up for the run in, but at least you wouldnt have to be concerned about your bench having to include DGW players

Yes. Or you could use it IN the main DGW.

Hello Andy, I saw last night that you posted a rate my team without United defence, is there a reason for this? Genuinely interested in a United fan's opinion as I'm undecided on starting with Lindelhof, their fixtures are great but I'm wondering if someone like Daniels is better off.

Shaw is injured and I dont fancy paying for Bailly or Valencia.

Lindelof is a good price but Im not sure how attacking he is - wonder if the 5.5m can be spent elsewhere.

I do have 2 United attackers though 🙂

I started considering Darmian purely because he's the same price as Lindelhof but Blind could always slot in there. Just think it's dangerous to start without due to the ownership of De Gea.

Not sure I trust United to start steamrolling teams to start with more than Lukaku in attack, but Mikhi has looked great so far!

Too tricky with defence this year, too many options are tempting me to start with 5 at the back 🙁

But even a bit injured, with those opening fixtures, I'll take a stab at Mou shutting them down and getting clean sheets. That's what you have to target in defenders and attacking returns are frosting, at least for the most part, I think

I'd say he's the most nailed attacking midfielder, yes. But not 100% nailed. Best United mid pick though imo. Has looked very sharp and Lukaku being more mobile than Ibra will suit his game.

Michael Carrick got more minutes last season. As did Pogba Mata Martial Herrera Fellaini Rashford and Lingard. So the entire midfield plus Rashford who gets some games out wide. And I'm sure his run only came once Mata got an injury later on too. So I'm still saying it's at least reasonable to say he can't be deemed nailed on yet

Why did he not use him more last season do you think? Not like he's 21 or 35. He was in his prime and I'm sure Jose signed him

Was a bit strange, seemed to be bedding him in, albeit taking forever to do so.

I think he'll be one of the main men in the first XI this year but no way we can say hes nailed. Perisic complicates things. Still waiting to see how we line up as well

Ozil, not just to be contrarian, but because I think Coutinho will be diluted by Salah's presence. Still totally involved, but something has to give. Ozil will just have another target to provide service to now, and will still be in same role
