Scout Notes – Pre Season – Part Two

Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho hand Liverpool some pre-season silverware, while Spurs put four past a Paris Saint-Germain side who have much to blame on their goalkeeper.

There are also draws for Newcastle United, Southampton and Swansea City, but Stoke City and Watford squeeze out narrow Saturday wins.

Here’s the second instalment of our Scout Notes from a bumper pre-season crop.

Leicester City 1 Liverpool 2

Liverpool came from behind to secure the Asia Trophy in a match that provided some possible answers to the conundrum of which players look like secure starters in the Reds’ highly competitive midfield.

Islam Slimani gave Craig Shakespeare’s side the lead, from a Christian Fuchs cross, before stunning goals from Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho secured the trophy for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

And it is that duo who are beginning to emerge as sure-fire starters for Liverpool – if the Brazilian remains at Anfield that is.

Salah’s goal, from a Coutinho assist, was his second pre-season strike. That form has persuaded 14.0% of Fantasy Premier League managers to take the plunge, and at 9.0 it’s currently looking like money well spent.

A massive 32.1% own Coutinho, who converted a Roberto Firmino pass for a superb long-range winner against the Foxes, and the 9.0-priced midfielder is another who Klopp will find very hard to ignore when Liverpool travel to Watford in Gameweek 1.

Firmino’s contribution was also welcome for the 19.0% of managers with him in their FPL front lines, but another popular pick, the 9.4%-owned James Milner, lasted just 40 minutes before coming off with a thigh problem.

Klopp was unsure as to the extent of the injury post-match.

“He felt it a little bit, a bit stiff. I hope nothing serious but we have to see.”

Bosses with the 6.5 man in their squads will be monitoring the situation studiously, particularly now that Andrew Robertson (5.0) has signed for the Reds to provide Milner with direct competition at left-back.

City boss Craig Shakespeare set his team up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Jamie Vardy up front alongside Slimani, before switching to a 4-5-1 with Andy King supporting the England international after the break.

Matty James (4.5) was handed a second successive start in midfield after enduring a 19-month lay-off with a serious knee injury.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel; Amartey (Simpson 46), Maguire, Morgan (Benalouane 77), Fuchs; Mahrez (Musa 65), Drinkwater (Iborra 56), James (Ndidi 56), Albrighton (Lawrence 46); Slimani (King 46), Vardy (Ulloa 66).

Liverpool XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold (Gomez 55), Matip (Klavan 46), Lovren (Flanagan 84), Milner (Moreno 41); Wijnaldum (Solanke 65), Coutinho (Woodburn 55), Lallana (Henderson 46); Salah (Kent 65), Firmino (Sturridge 46), Origi (Grujic 46).

Paris Saint-Germain 2 Tottenham Hotspur 4

Spurs got their pre-season underway with a fine win against PSG in which the French side’s keeper played a major part.

Christian Eriksen had lashed in a superb 30-yard effort to equalise before Eric Dier gave the Londoners the lead when the Parisian goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp, made an unholy hash of a clearance.

The hapless Trapp, whose performance suggested a bid to become Cockney rhyming slang, wasn’t finished either, as he was sent off in the second half for handling the ball outside his area.

Toby Alderweireld, with a shot from the edge of the box, and a late Harry Kane penalty rounded off the scoring for Spurs in Orlando.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino set up his side in a 4-2-3-1 in both halves, with midfielder Harry Winks given his first outing since a serious ankle injury picked up in April.

Spurs XI First half: Lloris; Walker-Peters, Carter-Vickers, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Onomah, Eriksen, Nkoudou; Janssen.

Spurs XI Second half: Vorm; Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies; Wanyama, Dembele (Winks 60); Oakley-Boothe, Eriksen, Alli; Kane.

Preston North End 1 Newcastle United 1

Aleksandar Mitrovic was preferred to Dwight Gayle up front for Newcastle United, and he took his chance to score his first goal of pre-season.

Paul Dummett’s right-footed shot was saved, and Mitrovic followed up to slot in the rebound.

Magpies coach Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen on bringing in at least one more striker over the summer, so Mitrovic – and possibly even the 10.8%-owned Gayle (6.5) – remain far from assured Gameweek 1 starters.

Benitez handed Jacob Murphy and Javier Manquillo their debuts off the bench, while defender Florian Lejeune made his first start.

Full-back Manquillo (4.5) was given a mere 13 minutes to impress and was used on the right wing.

Speaking post-match, Benitez revealed that former Liverpool and Sunderland loanee Manquillo’s role is certainly not set in stone.

“…with Javier Manquillo he’s a player that can play in both positions. We needed some cover for the full-backs. So I think he has to improve from last season, but he has the potential. He can train and understand what we’re looking for. He can play in different positions and one who has experience in the Premier League.”

Lejeune, meanwhile, has made a strong start for Newcastle at centre-half, and could grow to be a popular pick in the 4.5 price bracket if he can cement his starting role.

Newcastle United XI First half: Elliot; Mbemba, Hanley, Lejeune, Dummett; Atsu, Diamé, Shelvey, Aarons, De Jong; Mitrović.

Newcastle United XI Second half: Darlow (Woodman 70); Yedlin, Mbemba, Lejeune (Manquillo 76), Clark; Murphy, Hayden, Colback, Pérez, De Jong (Roberts 62); Gayle.

Brentford 2 Southampton 2

Charlie Austin scored twice in eight second half minutes for Southampton, only for goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s error to hand their hosts a share of the spoils.

Austin pounced on a defensive mix-up to open his – and Southampton’s – pre-season account before latching on to a Sam McQueen cross to double his tally.

The 6.5-priced forward is owned by just 2.3% of FPL managers, while team-mate Manolo Gabbiadini (7.0) is currently in 5.0% of squads. The Italian saw action in the second half, but it was Austin who emerged in credit from the Griffin Park encounter.

Saints coach Mauricio Pellegrino stuck with his go-to 4-2-3-1 formation, with Dusan Tadic in the No. 10 role once again.

But there was no place for either James Ward Prowse or Nathan Redmond as they continue to recover from their Euro U21 exertions, while Cedric Soares also remains on extended leave following Portugal’s Confederations Cup campaign.

Southampton XI: Forster, Pied (Jones 77); Bednarek (Stephens 45), Yoshida (Gardos 77), Targett (McQueen 45), Davis (Wood 63), Romeu (Hojbjerg 63), Long, Tadic (Gallagher 63), Boufal (Johnson 71), Austin (Gabbiadini 63).

Amiens SC 0 Stoke City 1

Mame Diouf grabbed the only goal of a match which turned tasty after the break, with four Stoke City players shown yellow cards.

The forward, who was preferred to Saido Berahino in the lone striker role, notched his second consecutive pre-season goal for the Potters.

Manager Mark Hughes fielded a strong line-up, with Geoff Cameron alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The arrival of Kurt Zouma on loan from Chelsea will surely limit Cameron’s prospects in that role.

With Darren Fletcher and Joe Allen deployed in the midfield pivot, Cameron’s best opportunity for starts may emerge at right-back where Glenn Johnson and Phil Bardsley are competing for minutes.

Elsewhere, Ramadan Shobhi is one to watch. He was handed a start and could get more opportunities now that Marko Arnautovic has left for West Ham.

The 5.0-priced midfielder might be hoping for increased pitch-time, but it would be a major surprise if Hughes doesn’t splash the cash on an Arnautovic replacement by the end of the transfer window.

Stoke City XI: Butland; Johnson (Edwards 46), Shawcross (c) (Muniesa 72), Cameron (Wollscheid 72), Pieters; Fletcher (Tymon 77), Allen (Imbula 77); Shaqiri (Verlinden 77), Bojan (Berahino 62), Ramadan (Adam 77); Diouf (Crouch 62).

SD Eibar 0 Watford 1

Etienne Capoue continued to build on his reputation for fast starts with the winning goal in Austria.

The Watford midfielder became last season’s early budget bandwagon on his way to a seven-goal, 131-point campaign, and he opened his summer account from an Isaac Success assist 12 minutes from time against the Hornets’ La Liga opponents.

Coach Marco Silva opted for his preferred 4-2-3-1 system with Ben Watson this time joined by Capoue in the pivot, while new signing Will Hughes was handed his first start as part of the attacking midfield three.

Forward Troy Deeney took no part in the tour of Austria and had what the club described as ‘minor surgery’ on a groin injury on Saturday.

Watford XI: Gomes (63, Bachmann); Janmaat, Kabasele, Prödl, Holebas; Watson (Chalobah 46), Capoue; Berghuis (Sinclair 46), Hughes (Doucouré 46), Amrabat; Okaka (Success, 63).

North Carolina 0 Swansea City 0

Leroy Fer and Jordan Ayew were particularly profligate as Swansea City completed their US tour with a goalless whimper.

Swans coach Paul Clement opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation in which Tammy Abraham started as the lone striker and midfielder Tom Carroll – a 4.3%-owned 4.5 option – again monopolised set-pieces in the continued (and almost certainly permanent) absence of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Swansea City XI: Fabianski (Nordfeldt 62); Naughton (Rangel 62), Mawson (van der Hoorn 62), Fernandez, Olsson (Kingsley 62); Britton (Mesa 62), Carroll (Grimes 66); Fer (Fulton 66), Routledge (Narsingh 66), Ayew (Montero 66); Abraham (McBurnie 66).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Having scoured through a few pages of RMT on FFS, I think Alonso is being overlooked on here as an option.

BUR tot EVE lei ARS sto

Apart from the GW 2 game against Spurs, I wouldn't mind playing him in any of the other games. He has so much attacking threat that it nullifies the strength of the fixture to an extent. I noticed that as the season went on last year he monopolized the free kicks too.

Even in a supposedly "tough" fixture for him yesterday, he would have ended up with a 10/11 pointer, for example. It's just that Chelsea look a well oiled machine in the 3-4-3 system. Needless to say that they usually start the season strong. I think he's a much better choice than Lindelof in the template who doesn't offer much in terms of attacking threat or bonus potential, even though he's a equally good shout for clean sheets (as per the Scout Report on FFS).

This is not a post to advocate a shift to 4 or 5 at the back, but it's worth noting that he outscored some of the premium mids like Özil and Pedro and had he played more he would have been on course to outscore the likes of De Bruyne and Sigurðsson given his PPG. I know I'm a sucker for elite wingbacks but I think he's worth his 7m price tag. With the abundance of 7m mids and the likely emergence of Austin as a 6.5 forward option, there is spare cash to spend.

Ludo pointed out to me that Alonso scored 3 goals, recorded 1 assist and 2 clean sheets (3 had he played against Burnley) and conceded 4 goals in those six fixtures last season:

    Chelsea 3-0 Burnley (didn't play)
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    Chelsea 5-0 Everton
Leicester 0-3 Chelsea (Alonso scored twice)
    Chelsea 3-1 Arsenal (Alonso scored)
    Stoke 1-2 Chelsea (Alonso assist)

A bonus is that you can never go wrong with clean sheets with an Italian. I checked Conte's history with Juventus and in the three seasons he recorded 21, 16 and 20 clean sheets during his tenure. I know Serie A is a different league and Juventus is a superior team but it goes to show that the manager prioritises defence first. With Alonso you are always in with a shout of getting points - whether they are defensive returns or attacking points remains to be seen.

Have to confess I've come round. He was brilliant for me last season but when the prices came out last week I just thought 7m was excessive. I was also concerned that Chelsea were about to buy this Sandro guy who'd compete for the same position.

I've not heard anything further about Sandro in the last few days - anyone have any updates there? Now that City are starting to hoard new wingbacks and I'm not sure who's nailed on, it's down to Valencia or 0.5 more for Alonso. By yesterday I'd come round to plumping for Alonso. But still, it comes down to whether Chelsea buy someone who might dislodge him.

From the eye test last year, I reckon he was a bit unlucky not to end up with more points. It's just that he's around the penalty box so often that you expect him to be involved one way or the other.

The percentage of shots players get on target varies a lot over time, suggesting this is less down to skill than chance. Shot volume is very stable over time though, and more interesting from a Fantasy perspective. What you want in a player is a high amount of expected goals. Some players consistently score more than their xG numbers suggest, like Messi, due to skill, but even the very, very best finishers only score 40 % more than their underlying shot volume suggests. For most players you probably won't be far off if you expect them to score at the underlying xG rate over time.

It's just very hard to splash that extra 1.0m on him with Luiz sitting pretty at 6.0m. Maybe the goal/assist threat is worth it. I will try and find a way for him to be added to my team.

Worth noting that Chelsea started last season with just 1 CS in the first 6 games. This was before they swapped to wingbacks and went on to keep 6 consecutive CS however, but they might be slow starters.

Not exactly worth noting as that's when Conte was appointed (so unsure about preferred system) - and as you said they were playing 4 atb. Now he is 100% settled with the system and the team.

I bought him in January, just about the time he embarked on a long spell of poor form. Chelsea's clean sheets seemed to drop a lot in the second half of the season but this may have been because they had the title wrapped up already.

That's a lovely post man. I had him in my team initially, but was swayed by the consense here. Chelsea's pre-season again reminding us about how high up the pitch he plays. Monitoring the transfer window to see whether they buy a back up or not.

If Alonso can deliver 3.75pts per 90 mins then he is good value. A 7.0m midfielder generally earns around 140pts per season. Similar with a 7.0m forward. so if Alonso can deliver more than this (3.75pts per 90 mins) then he is good value IMO.

        £7m though!

I know the comparison is always vs a £7m midfielder but you wouldn't own the midfielder the whole time so its hard to measure that. Plus the cheaper defender probaby outscores the cheaper midfield if you look at it as Alonso + 4.5m mid v 7m mid + 4.5m defender.

I'd love Alonso but not sure its going to happen.

As I said this is not a post advocating the 4-3-3 route. My point was more that he's been ignored on here - with the cash available due to the 7m mids/Austin, we can afford to reserve a spot for him. 🙂

Disagree - 433 means there is no playing 4.5 mid.

The comparison is Alonso plus 3rd defender against £7 mill 4th mid and 3rd defender i.e. a straight comparison with with 4th mid

          A no brainer really

An issue to look at is how Alonso did without Hazard in the lineup. My memories of watching Chelsea last year include plenty of Hazard bewitching the defenders and opening up tremendous space for Alonso. Will Willian take the left spot of the front three? If so, will he be as unplayable as Hazard?

I think he is severely underrated. Last season he averaged 5.71 PPG. Obviously he was lucky to a certain degree, but his underlying stats back him as a great attacking threat and Fantasy asset. If they play, my model has Alonso and Milner ranked as by far the two best players in defense (expected to get 0.5-1 point more per game than any of the other defenders). They are both players we can expect roughly 5 PPG from, which is put them almost in the same league as Coutinho/Salah/Alli/Eriksen. In the case of Alonso that is based on an expectation of 0.16 goals p90, 0.13 assists p90 and keeping a clean sheet in 41 % of games (I expect Chelsea to let in 0.9 goals per game).

          As I keep pointing out...

Alonso scored more PPG than any other player available to us this season priced at 9.0mill and below...in any position..

It all comes down to 'are Chelsea gonna buy an Alex Sandro type of player?'

If they do then Alonso will def not be worth his price tag.
If they don't, he absolutely is.

The thing is I didn't settle on the formation I'll go with from the start, moreover, I tend to go slightly light in defense with the first draft and then cut out expenses from attack and relocate them at the back. Alonso is an exciting prospect even at that price, I had Baines when he was 7.5 and treated him as a midfielder.

          Good post TFF.

It's also worth noting, that Spurs will be playing their first game at Wembley in the league. It's safe to say that the Spurs 'away' game isn't really as unfavourable, as it would have been, had it been played in the WHL. Chelsea bodes a good record at the New Wembley too. Especially against Spurs.

Great post! I've left him out for now, purely because I suspect that Azpilicueta (at .5 less) may now start as a RWB now that Rudiger can complete the back three. If this is not the case after 2 or 3 games I'll be finding that extra .5 from somewhere and getting Alonso in.

Yeah I would have been tempted at Moses for 0.5 less, had he not been suspended. Think Azpilicueta is likely to be RWB for one game only though, with Moses coming straight back in. Also, I prefer the fact that Alonso is on direct free-kicks so willing to play the 0.5 more.

I was hoping people would forget about him.

After Virgin's excellent post last week on premium defenders v budget midfielders, Alonso went straight in my team. And is staying there.

He's an absolute no brainer. You get points with him - simple as.

I think it very much depends on your budget for the def/mid combination. You can substitute your own choice of player but i'll go with my personal opinion of the strongest choice.

          For example:

At 11.5M Alonso + Carroll vs Willian + Dunk
At 12.0M Alonso + Puncheon vs Willian + Cedric
At 12.5M Alonso + Henderson vs Willian + Trippier
At 13.0M Alonso + Stanislas vs Willian + Bellerin
At 13.5M Alonso + Redmond vs Willian + Valencia

I think the combo with Willian outscores the one with Alonso in most cases and the more so the higher your budget.

Look st it this way, if there was a nailed 7 mill mid playing for a top 6 team that gets extra point for goals and clean sheets and is likely to outscore any other mid in that price bracket ... would you have him in your team ?

          Good discussion.

Alonso was absolute FPL gold for me last season but his price for this season initially had me balking.

However after seeing what little value is on offer under 8.0m in midfield this season and looking again at his PPG he is back in my team and will remain there unless Chelsea sign a left-back to rotate him with.

I've had to make sacrifices in midfield with Tom Carroll playing and another 4.5m (Cork or RLC) as back-up but for me it is worth it to have a defender who is a constant goal threat from open play, set-pieces, takes direct free-kicks and is in a team that keep a lot of clean sheets.

Baines was £8m at one point wasn't he? And the most he ever got was 5 goals in a season, not sure on how many assists but fewer clean sheets. Alonso at £7m is great value, if he's played the whole season last year I'm sure he would have been priced £7.5 or £8m.

This is the thing with him. I take the clean sheets as a bonus, rather than the other way around. He's an anomaly for a defender. Concedes 3 goals, but more than makes up for it with an attacking return - that too against the might of Bayern 🙂

Probably, but imo not a good pick. Trippier and Bertrand better for the same price as they are also nailed but offer attacking threat.

Valencia is a fantastic pick if you want a Utd defender but if you want to spend less there are better alternatives than the United lads

          Second or third striker?

          If third, B
          If second, A

I say this because I prefer B from those two options but think you need at least two big hitters up front so you can transfer to the one(s) in form

I'm done until Charity Shield, which along with the rest of pre season will help the decisions on the bottom of the post:

        Foster
        Kolasinac | Daniels | Alonso
        KDB | Milivojevic | Coutinho | Ritchie
        Austin | Kane | Lukaku

        Myhill | Mee | T. Carroll | Cranie

        - Kolasinac or Bellerin or *Monreal
        - Coutinho or Salah
        - Ritchie or Ince or Knockaert
        - Austin or Gayle
        - Cranie or another 4.0m defender

        *If Monreal then bank 0.5m

Good morning. Any Stoke fans around? Do you think Sobhi can nail down a spot now that Arnautovic is gone?

The thing is it would be a major surprise if Hughes doesn’t look into the market to find an Arnautovic replacement

Why you want Stoke players ? They lost Arnie & Walters and signed Fletcher. Shaqiri is also linked for moving away. Injury potje defenders and not too good fixture to start with.

Not a Stoke fan, but for its worth I think he is definitely one to watch at his price.

He hasn't produced the points fpl-wise yet - but could well do if he gets a run in the team.
