Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre Season

A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

    Morning guys!

How does this look as an effort for 4-3-3?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Alonso Trippier Lindelof Bertrand (4.0)
    Salah Sane Zaha (TCarrol 4.5)
    Lukaku Kane Austin

    Thanks!

Cheers- the reason I've avoided Willian (for the time being, at least) is the fact that I've got Alonso, and am trying not to double up too much!

Foster Gayle can stay but the others no so sure. We only know the good 4.5 backs after a few GW's. A strategy I went last year was have 5 mil backs and tweet when I saw a trend for 4.5's.

all of them. think ozil can score 10+ goals this season if alexis leaves. eriksen was sensational last yr and doesnt seem to carry that nagging threat of rotation which kdb does.
      ...but then kdb is awesome.

as it stands probably eriksen, but can see all 3 tempting us at different points this season

I know Kompany will get injured but I feel I would deal with that better than Mendy being randomly rotated for a prime home fixture. Let's see whta price he comes in at first. Got about 11 assists for Monaco last season.

Done the research on Mendy. He's a bit shot shy, but more than makes up for it with crosses per game at 1.4 - more than triple fellow new signing Danilo, and far more than the pitiful output of Clichy last year (0.2 I think it was!).

You'd be looking at clean sheets + assists with him, plus decent measure of bonus potential as his ball retention stats are pretty good too

    Foster (Elliot)

think bournemouth is king+1. so defoe fighting with afobe for a maximum of 1 other spot up top. the fact king is cheaper and is the 25 year old (so could even improve more) makes him the no brainer *if* you want a bournemouth attacker

Think he covers the Bournemouth tough fixtures in 3 and 4, 6, 8, 10 quite well but that only leaves Francis at 4.5

Any thoughts on this, you lovely people?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier - Cedric - Lindelof (4.5, 4.0)
    Alli - Salah - Willian - Sane (4.5)
    Lukaku - Lacazette - Gayle

Decent team I reckon, crappy bench.

      Austin > Gayle IMO

Try T.Carroll in midfield for your 4.5.

Not sure what David Luiz is doing there tbh, as Phil says. Be tempted to swap him to Bailly/Valencia and then Mkhi out for an 8.0 or 7.5.

      1. Pariße
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

Easy to find better alternatives for Luiz. A replacement for Mkhi would cost around 9-10m, I'm not getting another cheapo in there, the whole point of having him is that he covers a top team and he's actually got fantasy potential, who happens to be pretty cheap.

Austin's PL record: 25 goals in 54 games
Austin's overall record: 236 goals in 389 games

Gabbiadini's overall record: 47 goals in 197 games

Long's PL record: 45 goals in 235 games
Long's overall record: 105 goals in 424 games

Pellegrino has played in the PL and coached in the PL under Benitez. Gabbi was Puel's man. Pellegrino has no such alligences.

Much to admire. The Monreal pick could be Trippier and I'm not sure if Elliot will start if Rafa buys a new gk.

Lindelof looks toast to me. Like the Alonso pick and excellent front 3.

Thanks. I was on Trippier but I fancy Monreal for Leicester at home and Stoke away versus Trippier at Newcastle away and Chelsea at home, also saw Spurs are in for another right back. Given some of the risky picks and the amount of options out there I wouldn't be surprised if I wildcarded in first 2 or 3 weeks.

You are right, Lindelof is a huge risk right now and can't see it changing before the start of the season. May swap out for Blind.

        Cheers, good advice.

Not 100% happy with Francis and Lascelles as DF rotations. Better options?

    Foster
    Trippier - Cedric - Francis
    Coutinho - Willian - Ramsey - Milivojevic
    Kane - Lukaku - Aguero

    Elliot - T.Carroll - Lascelles (rotate with Francis) - 4.0
