Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre Season

A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

anyone else notice that Bony is not listed in this year's FPL ? If he gets a transfer back to Swansea (current transfer rumor) he might be a good pick for a 3rd striker

    Bottomed:
Not 100% happy with Francis and Lascelles as DF rotations. Better options?

    Foster
    Trippier - Cedric - Francis
    Coutinho - Willian - Ramsey - Milivojevic
    Kane - Lukaku - Aguero

    Elliot - T.Carroll - Lascelles (rotate with Francis) - 4.0

Hurts balance by having the big 3 up top.
A big hitter is great for captaincy but rarely outscore points per minute against lesser players. Max 2 IMO and ideally rotate for skip.

Thanks for the advice. My previous team was:

        Foster
        Trippier - Cedric - Daniels
        KdB - Willian - Ramsey - Redmond
        Kane - Lukaku - Firmino

        Elliot - T.Carroll - Lascelles - 4.0

        This better balanced?

      Hart
      Trippier - Cedric - Dunk - Dawson
      Coutinho - Willian - Ramsey

With Liverpool being linked with Keita and VvD at 70m apiece, is it a case of them spending the Coutinho money before they get it?

140m sounds like an awful lot of money to spend otherwise and Pool are not a particularly rich club.

Since rules changed on having player values on your balance sheet Amortizing cost over the contract and player values going up it starts a price frenzy. 140 mil is not a lot anymore.

I think they've actually got a few players to sell to make decent money. Sakho, Markovic, Moreno and possibly Can to juventus.

Plus the champs league and to money. Personally I think the club are backing just klopp this window.

A nailed on Fab at no.10 or even beside Kante (which would allow him to get up the pitch) is fantasy gold, at 7.0.

The Willian Fab double up could be the new template.

Brutal suggestion. Fab & Will - Nope.

I disagree, I don't think Fab will only start against weaker teams this season.

I believe they've already had the conversation on increased minutes and Conte seems much more impressed with him now. I'm not suggesting starting them both initially but it's definitely worth monitoring.

          No, fair point.

That was Willian's 1st penalty for Chelsea.
Fabregas has 3, 2 of those were with Willian on the pitch but they were at the back end of the 15/16 season under Hiddink.

So Willian took one in the FA Cup - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chelsea-fc/elfmeterschuetzen/verein/631/plus/0?saison_id=2016

Morata did not take pens at RM as CR7 was around.

Morata did take a few pens for Juve though (mainly in the cup - main men Tevez and then Dybala had them mostly)

Could be open. I'd imagine Morata will take them though

    6. Guba

I feel like it may come down to whoever shout's loudest while in Hazard's absence, which obviously isn't ideal from a planning point of view.

I.e. if Willian, Fab or Morata were fouled I think they would all want to take the pen.

    Thoughts about this bunch?

    Foster - Fabianski
Trippier - Blind - Cedric - Ake (or Daniels if you wish) - Dunk
    Alli - Countinho - Willian - Zaha - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Fletcher

I'd like to have Mhikitaryan in there somewhere, but not too sure if and how to do it. Probably for Coutinho, but feels risky with his ownership. I always struggle with the third striker slot so I plugged at 4.5 in there.

Also :Eriksen or Alli and Aké or Daniels?

    1. COYG
      • 7 Years

Decent for a 4 4 2. Wouldnt worry too much about mkhi. Also Alli and Daniels imo, but daniels has terrible fixtures after 2 or 3 gw's

    2. Guba

I have almost the exact same line-up as you at the moment, except with Sane instead of Alli and Alonso in place of Ake. (4.0m bench defender too).

Either way I really like it.

I personally like Eriksen over Alli, and Ake over Daniels.

      1. Daaf
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Thanks. A bit templatey, but since my starts are usually quite bad it might be warranted. I also like Eriksen better, but Alli has more ownership, gets more big chances and more goals. It's explosiveness vs consistency really and with such high ownership and the same price I couldn't ignore Alli.

A chelsea defender might be an idea, but that would mean downgrading Zaha.

I published this yesterday on the gameweek 6 wildcard: http://whogottheassist.com/the-gameweek-6-early-wildcard/

TL;DR - GW6 is when the fixtures turn for Arsenal, City, Everton and Spurs (GW6-8 at least), with us having a core of United players (who are good til 10+) already in our draft sides. It might be a good time to plan to pull the WC then. It suits me as I tend to start poorly - it might suit you, too.

    Best combo?
    A) Valencia, Eriksen, Lacazette
    B) Bailly, Mkhi, Kane

Btw, anyone thinking about going triple Spurs? It seems a bit much if playing at Wembley can affect their form, but Trippier, Eriksen, Alli, and Kane all look like the best options at their price.
