Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre Season

A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

A quick check on this please guys!

    Foster (myhill)

    Trip Cedric Daniels Mee Dunk

    Alli Sane Salah Willian Carroll

    Kane Lukaku 4.5

This would mean 352 or 442 each week, would you downgrade a mid to get someone like Austin or run with this?

    Thanks!

Trip a potential risk due to impending signing
Weak defence but that's just a preference of mine to have 2 premium defenders

      Rest looks good

I'd upgrade the defence for 4-4-2, and not go 3-5-2 with this team. Than Austin, if he plays, might be a better option.

Spurs overkill, downgrade Alli to Ramsey and get Austin. Get another keeper with the change maybe.

Well, all last Season, people on here were dissing Sterling, as they do, and yet I find that he still racked up 2509 minutes, and was more productive than in 2014/5.

Moreover, he came through with the crucial goal on more than one occasion.

    Bottomed:

    Best combo?
    A) Valencia, Eriksen, Lacazette
    B) Bailly, Mkhi, Kane

Btw, anyone thinking about going triple Spurs? It seems a bit much if playing at Wembley can affect their form, but Trippier, Eriksen, Alli, and Kane all look like the best options at their price.

Hernandez was mostly playing less than 10 mins in PL, so those stats are not accurate. I rate him a better option than Austin due to WHU's attacking play, whereas SOU tend to play more defensively.

      Two goals against Brentford.

Vaguely notable as Pellegrino played Austin and Shlong up top together, whereas at Alaves he liked a 4-2-3-1. Gabbi didn't start due to a virus.

Lots of first team players missing so very little to read into, but Austin would be great at 6.5 and starting and if Pelle goes for 2 up top that's great

(here's a little table comparing some key stats for Gabs and Austin, too: https://ton.twitter.com/1.1/ton/data/dm/889427209961734147/889427203792007168/7v_Wy5w5.jpg)

Sane and Zaha, especially if you already have Kane.

I'd try and find a way t get that extra 1m to pair Alli with a 7.0.

There are a bunch of 7.0 mids that are tempting including Ramsey, Willian, Zaha, then even Redmond/Tadic are in my opinion better than Phillips.

    How's this one for a 442?

    Hennessey
    Alonso Trippier Bertrand Daniels
    Eriksen Coutinho Willian Stanislas
    Kane(c) Lukaku (vc)

    Elliott RLC/Carroll Rangel

It's just that if Morata/Jesus starts firing, it's practically impossible to get 3rd forward...Thanks.

Little bit of advice please guys:

A, Kane, De Bruyne and Tadic

    or

    B, Jesus, Alli and Coutinho

    A) Having 3 expensive forwards and 2 4.5 mids
    B) Having 2 expensive and 1 cheap forward with 1 4.5 mid?

Debating that myself... currently have kaka, lacazette and benteke with a 4.5 mid and tadic. If I downgrade tadic could get a bif ger option to benteke...

    Think I'm getting there...

    Foster (Elliot)

    Cedric - Tripper - Daniels - (Lascelles/gimp)

Cout - Tadic - KDB - Willian (RLC)

    Lacazette - Firmino - Kaku

Tinkering with Fimino to Jesus and downgrading KDB to Sane but not sold yet..

Do we expect Morata to be as focal a point as, Costa was?

I can see Laca being the focal point at Arsenal (with Pens) so, can't see a reason to do Laca>Morata with Sanchez and Ozil providing

    1. Dasher0303

I started with Laca, but then changed to Morata. Chelsea look really good and usually do well in opening games of season while Arsenal usually start badly. I'm looking to get an arsneal attacker(probs Lacazette) for GW7 WC.

A lot depends on Bats form and if they sign Llorente. But he should be the focal point, yes. Probably more than Laca as Haz is a much more team player than Alexis. A lot depends on Ozils form.

Why are Dwight Gayle's projections so high in the member's area?

Is this based on his Championship scoring record?

This is the worry with him. Just wonder if Rafa will trust him to lead the line in the Prem - they didn't at CPL

          Good record last year, though.

It's a question of how much blood they can squeeze out of 'Pool. Maybe waiting for Cout > Barce to extort another 10m. Don't blame the Saints board myself.
