Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre Season

A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

Ok, Lindelof is gone for me, so..

    A Foster & Bailly
    or
    B De Gea & 5.0 def?

Foster and 5.0-5.5 def. May as well pick the better value players rather than fill the gaps with the money because you have it. You'll need the 0.5-1.0m at some point

Look at each individual United defender and decide if they're worth the money. Valencia is the only one that comes close for me.

Yeah, I'm not sure they are worth it, but I'd say De Gea is. So I suppose that's the answer..

Not convinced myself. That extra million could prove to be very useful in 5GW's time and you're frustrated that it's tied up in your GK rather than an outfield player to swap for emerging points scorers. But you could be right!

Your 4.0 defender isn't going to be a starter. It's the same principle as Foster/Myhill, if Naughton doesn't play, Rangel comes in. Swansea and Bournemouth also have good rotation for budget defenders.

It's not quite the same. Circumstances may mean you need to play both Naughton and Rangel to field XI - but obviously you won't need 2 GKs.

Whoever he picks as his 4.0 defender, it'll likely leave him with just 1 playing defender on the bench anyway.

They're one of those teams where if they keep a CS, the overall average goes up by nearly 6pts. Really annoying when it happens, but with little offensive threat from any of the outfield defenders, I think I'm going to look elsewhere.

Sane at his age has some serious scope for improvement though. That combined with his likeliness of consistent game time over Sterling and it's Sane comfortably coming out on top for me.

Wow made an unbelievable squad with the inclusion of Rashford I am very happy with Daniels as Rashford's backup.

I have a squad with these fine players to rotate atate into my starting 11

Hart, Elliot Daniels Alonso Kompany Monreal Trippier Coutinho Ozil Eriksen KDB Rooney Rashford Morata Carrol and RLC.

If I play my fixtures right and Rashford plays most games this has potential to work out really well providing I get my rotation right

Morata Rashford Coutinho and KDB will have to fit that bill. I did have Sanchez but I am holding out on him

It is a fair point I suppose maybe I'm putting in too much faith with Morata

    Foster (Begovic)
    Trippier - Dawson - Valencia - Bertrand (4.0.)
KdB - Mkhitaryan - Willian - Tadic (Carroll)
    Lukaku - Kane (4.5)

Any thoughts on this team? Could maybe do Willian -> Chadli and upgrade the 4.5 forward to Abraham (5.5).

I just can't see the Foster love. W Brom weren't good last year defensively. Haven't been good preseason yet
Their defence is 9years old and injury prone and slower than a man running through treacle.
Then they sign a defender and believe it or not he is reputed to be even slower
Their fixtures are great but I am sceptical.

      900* years old
      Only Chelsea sign 9yr olds

Thinking the same but Foster is not a huge risk. Might as well get cover for good fixtures the less expensive way.

Agree unless you rotate him effectively.

Only reason he is being picked a lot here is he has a 4.0 back up.

Agreed. I think one of Fabianski or Begovic will be the stand out value keeper this year so am starting with both of them and will prob downgrade one to a 4.0 on the Wildcard.

    Dunk or Suttner?

Is it true Cedric missed training camp? Might take him out if so.

    Forster, Foster
    Trippier, Otamendi, Monreal, Cedri, Rangel
    Willian, Ali, Coutinho, Zaha (McArthur)
    Lukaka, Defoe, Austin

2 million ITB. thinking of replacing Defoe with Morata?

Downgrade Otamendi to a 4.5 back up and get Jesus, leaves you with 0.5 extra
