The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not changed this team now for like a week, must show i'm fairly content with it. The biggest drawbacks are absolute poo bench, and have to play RLC as part of a 3-5-2, but can't help but not like it.

    Foster
    Cedric - Lindelof - Trippier
    RLC - Salah - Alli - Sane - Willian
    Kane - Lukau

    Elliot: Fletcher, Hunemeier, Rangel

Look decent enough before the inevitable wildcard around 6 weeks in? haha.

Might have to settle for WC in GW2 when Lindelof, Cedric and RLC dont start.

Lindelof was the worse player in both the preseason matches United played so might need to settle him slowly. Cedric is still on vacation because of CC and might (emphasis on might) not start gw1.

Cedric in my team despite may not play GW1. With this set of fixtures I am fine with this. Don't want to use FT to buy him before GW2.

If you have a decent cover thats k. What if he misses the second one though? Hoping VVD goes so I can go back to my boys Stephens/Yoshi.

My cover is Tom Carroll so 2 pointer but I really prefer to go this way than lose FT for Cedric, especially at this stage of season when I don't want to do -4 and should make sensible moves.
I just simply hate these useless cups such Confederation Cup or Club World Cup. With so many games to play for club and country during season it is just stupid waste of time.

    Tottenham's Form at Wembley Stadium

    3 games
    1 win
    2 losses

    3-1 win against CSKA Moscow
    1-0 loss against Bay. Leverkusen
    2-1 loss against Monaco

What do you think of this, and how do you think Tottenham will get on at Wembley Stadium next season?

The atmosphere and pressure builds when they play at Wembley Stadium. It's a different experience when they are so used to White Hart Lane

Charlie Austin is clearly the standout budget striker if he can nail down a place at saints.

Saw he scored 2 v Brentford at weekend

How confident are people that he will start 1st game ahead of gabbiadini?

Any suggested modifications? Edging towards Hart at the back, after seeing his old scores from 5 & 6 years ago... Can he recapture that form? Or just go with Ben Foster initially?

    Hart
    Trippier, Lindy, Cedric, Daniels
    Alli, Willian, Phillips
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus
    (Myhill, Francis, RLC, Carroll)

I think Phillips is a sleeper hit this year... When he played last year he was great, until West Brom's traditional switch off after achieving safety. Great fixtures too & i need a 6.0 to balance the books.

Lindelof - crossing my fingers José is using him to prove a point to Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Blind etc... I hope he will be nailed.

Because he get's his head or foot onto the ball doesn't mean it was a good chance. I remember Utd putting a lot of hopeful balls into the box and Ibra got a touch on it under pressure. That counts as a missed shot. Stats can be misleading.

I think you'd be bettr with Foster & Bailly instead of DDG & Dawson... Dawson is an absolute yellow card magnet, he will lose at least 10 points in yellows thisnyear again (+bonus impact). Amongst the 5.0's he's noticably lower in points terms than he should be because of this (Daniels outscored him by 30 points for example. Althoughh he has got an eye for goal & could be good for first 3-5 weeks.

    New draft:

    Gomes // Hart

    Valencia // Bertrand // Dawson // Mawson // Mee

    Alli // Mhikitaryan // Ramsey // Willian // Ritchie

    Lukaku // Jesus // J Ayew

    Things I'm not sure about:
    - Aguero vs Jesus
    - Not having Kane
    - Too much money spent in defence
    - Feel there may be better options at 6.5 than Valencia (i.e Chelsea defence, although I fear champions can often start poorly).
    - Could switch Mhiki -> Coutinho for LIV attacking coverage and downgrade the defence, feel Mhiki could be a good differential though and Coutinho is having his head turned by Barca.

Not sure what to make of Pogba as an option. Has the stats, but has never been prolific for club r country. Fell into the trap of getting him last season becasue his attacking stats were that of a striker, he returned 2 points every week.

Just think there's a long, long list of midfielders to go down before you get to Pogba. And presumably with Lukaku you're already heavily invested in José's attack.

That's what's stopping me from getting Mkhi - i have a feeling they have got his price wrong & he should be 9.0 at least, but can't take the chance as already have Lukakkers

For the same price, Mkhi looks a great option, but nailed-ness is an issue there which Pogba doesn't have a problem with

With what players have you found that you feel pure fear not owning them but then pure frustration when you own them and watch them play?

Ibrahimovic was that kind of player for me last season

    1. Camp No No

      Lukaku.

Earlier mostly just the frustration part. This season, as he starts for ManU, also a great fear.

    Current TSB%
38.3% - Alli (most owned midfielder)
    13.0% - Eriksen (11th most owned midfielder)

Eriksen is becoming more popular at the moment, hoping his ownership stays down though. Could even be a differential.

True, although as an owner of Kane I don't feel like I cold climb the ranks owning Alli as Well, both very popular. They are both the same price so should be easier to swap if need be.

I think if you own Kane and one of the other of Alli/Eriksen, you shouldn't be worried about the other mids points, Eriksen will more then likely match Alli over the season.

Nice. What's Salah Done? Seeing him in a lot of teams atm. Unsure about Darmian. I wouldn't bother with Mee and would just get a 4mil guy. As long as your 2 4.5 mids play you'll never need a 5th defender playing 433. Like the keepers but can see that rotation being frustrating. Chuck Elliot in there and with that spare 1m from those 2 moves get Valencia over Darmian.
