The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

How does this 3-4-3 look with big 3 upfront? If Cedric not playing early games Daniels can come in

    Foster
    Trippier Dawson Cedric
    Willian Zaha Redmond Phillips
    Kane Aguero Lukaku

    Elliot Daniels Carroll Dunk

If any mid above 7.0 starts swinging you are going to have massive troubles getting them in.

This. I think pricing structure is very undervalued. The ability to shift to form players is directly impacted by the pricing structure you create.

Thanks that would be an issue. My previous 4-3-3 was more balanced so will stick with that for now

All those with Kane and Lukaku.

Morata and/or Lacazette score in charity shield and look good

    Do you A) ignore it
    B) kneejerk out Kane and improve midfield

Think above scenario will rip up all current RMTs. Morata at home to Burnley would be an unstoppable wagon

I choose c) monitor it, don't ignore it, but dont take kaku ot kane out right now because its only 1 goal, and they are both machines. see what happens.

Depends on eye test more than them scoring. But can see myself going without Kane, you can do a lot with those 2+ mil.

I would downgrade Jesus from my third forward though, to Morata for Burnley GW1 & keep the 0.5 ITB for a quick swap back for GW2 Jesus captain

The only person who takes the Charity Shield seriously is Mourinho when he wins it.

A new striker scoring in that isn't going to put me off the double golden boot winner.

This one's a little complicated. I'm on the RCCR variation, and asking these questions to find something that's better, but not sure I can. Any thoughts?

    A) Bertrand + Alonso + Kolasinac + Lukaku + RCCR*
    B) Bertrand + Ake + Daniels + Jesus + Sane
    C) Dawson + Ake + Daniels + Jesus + Salah

*RCCR = RLC + T. Carroll + Chabolah + Romeu (all in the team; picked for starting XI based on form and fixtures)

    Mourinho is a tactical genius.

    Mourinho never wastes a penny.

Mourinho who all the man united fans think is the best thing since sliced bread.

£200m on new players to only finish 3 points ahead of Van Gaal and to only score 5 more goals than Van Gaal. United fans are such mugs. There is no other way to look at. They should be calling for his head.

"Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm."

It's a team of 11 players not 4. He's building a team and to be honest he got a pretty crap team to start with.

Let's see what Pep does after spending 130+m on full backs.

It's obvious that poor finishing was the main reason for their disappointing finishing.

Something a manager has little impact on. United fans seem to see this

£117 million spent after sale revenue for players - skewed by £90 mill for Pogba.

I still can't believe he got them into he champions league somehow, serious kudos due for that alone. Football is fickle, there is no sense in it anymore. See Exhibit A Leicester winning league & Ranieri getting sacked few months later.

Swansea still holding out for £50 mill for Gylfi - rejected the latest Everton offer. Nice to see Everton getting a bit of their own medicine 🙂

I'd pay 49 mil. 50 too much for midfielder. Only defenders worth that much.

How is this for a 3-5-2/4-4-2 team?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier Cédric Lindelöf (Lejuene Mee)
    Ward-Prowse Alli Salah Willian Sané
    Lacazette Lukaku (Fletcher)

    Balanced and top 6 coverage?

Looking further than just the opening GW's...

    A) Foster (2.8) - Alli (5.8) -Salah (4.5)
    B) Forster (3.0) - Eriksen (5.5) & Pogba (4.6)

Has anyone gone for a team of genuine wing backs in a back 5, so you're almost starting 5 extra midfielders? Thinking the likes of Alonso & Milner... A back 5 with those two could pay off, with another 2x 7.0-ish mids (Zaha, Phillips, Willian, Ramsey etc) & then big 3x up top?

Alli to KDB if you have the extra 0.5 and no City cover.

Only 2 fixtures in the next 16 against last season's Top 6 after GW5-21.

Lol every time I see you post on here, your questions always seem to involved whether it's worth having Kane or not... How you can expect a serious answer from anyone when your user name is "no Kane no gain" is beyond me...
But probably A, though Lindelof is not looking a great pick right now
