Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

        Didn't slimani come in at 8.5m last year? Wouldn't be surprised if little pea did too. But I hope it's 7.5m too. But level with Defoe at 8m seems the most realistic.

      I'd say 7.5 isn't great value on him. Wijnaldum scored higher last season and is 7.0 and Salah arrival makes it more likely these 2 are less involved in attacks as Coutinho Salah Firmino Mane will do that job without them well enough

      Don't think Hernandez is as good as Defoe. Defoe played for a rubbish PL club and scored goals. Hernandez played for an above average Bundesliga club in a weaker league and didn't score as many goals.

      De he's not good enough value imo, unless just for the short run (opening fixtures).
