The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Choose:

    A) Ramsey
    B) Redmond
    C) Phillips

    Have Willian & Zaha.

      Redmond.

Phillips has patches of good form but also these weird crises of self-confidence that Pulis has mentioned previously - was just my luck that he went through the latter straight after I selected him last year.

Don't like the Ramsey bandwagon on here. A few darts into the box in a pre-season friendly isn't enough evidence to suggest he's going to hit the form of 3 years ago.

I like Remond but I should have mentioned I have Forster, Bertrand & Austin right now. If Austin is nailed I think he's a better option than Redmond but if he's not than I'll probably get Redmond and Gayle.

Are there any private leagues I could join?

    Either head-to-head or classic?

    Any top 10k/top 5k/top 2.5k finish leagues?

    RMT (0 ITB)

    Foster
    Alonso Daniels Trippier Cedric
    KDB Alli Willian Zaha
    Lukaku Lacazette

    (Elliot Mee Caroll Quaner)

Could downgrade Alonso to upgrade Zaha / Lacazette thoughts?

I'm still not sure I fully understand the "free hit chip".

Say I wanted to do one or two transfers to prepare for the week after this one, but also want to do a "mini wildcard" due to only six teams having a game this gw. Do you think that's possible? Do I then do the "real" transfers first and then the "chip-transfers"? According to the rules it's played when confirming the transfers (and can't be cancelled).

    1. Waxys
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

You can't make transfers when you play your wildcard.

      Same deal here I imagine

Except you can make transfers on the wildcard, that's the point of it. I understand that it won't affect much, but if for instance you want the price rise on a player, but won't have him in the free chip squad, I'm not sure if it's possible to get him.

People ruling out Mcauley depsite him having his best season ever last season and scored a whopping 6 goals as CB and at the age of 37 years young.

Lol at the moment he's nailed on until West Brom sign another defender. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

We just said that he was becoming old, WBA are looking for a CB and that Dawson is the safer pick.

We don't get extra points on the basis of him being 37

Dawson is the much safer pick for the same price

Dawson barely got any points hahaha just 8 more than Mee who is 4.5 and played less.

Dawson is a very poor player to pick

McAuley is injured at the minute isn't he? Dawson still has 8 goals over the last 2 seasons, compared to McAuley's 7 in that time. Better underlying attacking stats too and a decade younger.

      1. Waxys
        • 7 Years

As I said Mcauley had his best ever season scoring 6 goals in one season and was a bonus point magnet. And one of the highest scoring FPL defenders.

Unless Weat Brom sign another defender I don't see that changing or why he can't have an even better season

He had his best goal scoring season but Dawson still had more shots on target and chances created than him.

McAuley turns 38 this year and has been having a few recurring injuries since the end of last season (played through them a lot).

        2. Bojan Horsemack

Let's be realistic and look at his goals in the preceding seasons: 1 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 2. So 6 was a serious outlier, and at the very top end of the age expectancy for prem players he'll be unlikley to repeat the feat, let alone better it.

          1. Waxys
            • 7 Years
            6 years, 8 months ago

Yes 6 was amazing and I see no reason why he can't do even better what can I say some players peak later than others

    5. Bojan Horsemack
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

McAuley a definite goal threat and no significant difference between 37 and 38. But last season was a serious outlier for him when it comes to goals. And they must surely be making contingency plans in case he hits a wall at some stage.

      1. Waxys
        • 7 Years

They are but at the moment we have no indication he isn't nailed on or has hit his peak.

He may still be developing lol. Gigs played until he was 40 and in a more taxing role than CB

          • 11 Years

He came off early in many games towards the end of last season. Plus you seem to be ignoring the threat of Hegazi to his position.

I'm sure Hegazi is just an emergency sub.

They won't repalce a solid veteran with an untested player like him lol. Unless they sign someone big.

Should do well (if you don't mind the regular assists offset by even-more-regular yellow cards). If he was 4.5, he'd be straight in. At 5.0 there are better options to start the season with, in my opinion.

    Morning Y'all,

Thoughts on this lot. Obvious Kane/Ali/Eriksen shaped hole.

    Foster
    Ake-Monreal-Bert-Trip
    Cout-Fab-KDB-Ramsey
    Kun-Kaku

    Planning for 442
    -basis:
    Foster/Elliot
    Luiz-Trippier-Lindelof-Cedric (Simpson)
    William x x x (Loftus-Cheek)
    Lukaku x (Fletcher)

    -options:
    A. Alli-DeBruyne - Firmino + Ozil
-> not sure on Firmino actually playing much as striker
    B. Coutinho-Alli - Jesus + Pogba or Ramsey/Zaha(+1m)
-> not sure on rotation for Jesus
    C. Coutinho-Debruyne - Kane + Snodgrass/Stanislas/Allen
    -> poor 4th midfielder

    Your pick?

Anyone got a link to an article about 2/3 way defensive rotation options?

    Cheers!
