Scout Report – Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City’s huge summer investment on full-backs continued on Monday with the acquisition of Benjamin Mendy from Monaco for a reported fee of £52m.

Arriving at the Etihad on a six-year contract, the highly-rated 23-year-old hailed manager Pep Guardiola’s tactical approach as key to his decision:

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City. They are one of Europe’s leading Clubs and in Pep Guardiola they have a manager committed to playing attacking football. I am sure that over the next few years we will be successful.”

Meanwhile, the club’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, talked up the France international’s prospects:

“Benjamin has all the qualities we are looking for in a full-back. For such a young player, he has a wealth of top-level experience. He is undoubtedly one of the world’s best full-backs, our number one target in this position. We are all delighted to have him here at Manchester City. I’m sure he will prove a fantastic addition to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Le Havre youth system, Mendy made his debut for the club back in 2011/12 just a few weeks after his seventeenth birthday. Over the course of two seasons in the French second division, he produced four assists across 57 appearances.

Mendy then made his way to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille in July 2013. He struggled to cement regular starts, making just 24 appearances in his first year and serving up one goal and four assists.

However, the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa in May 2014 proved instrumental in Mendy’s development – the youngster was handed 33 starts and delivered a trio of assists in the Chilean’s only full season at the helm. Mendy produced a further goal and assist in 24 outings over the 2015/16 campaign before making his way to Monaco last summer.

Afforded license to raid forward by manager Leonardo Jardim, Mendy was a vital cog in the swashbuckling side that swept to last season’s Ligue 1 title. He played 25 times, producing five assists, and claimed another three assists in seven Champions League outings as Monaco made it through to the semi-finals.

His temperament remains somewhat volatile, though. Mendy was banned for five league matches last season after kicking an opponent in an off-the-ball altercation.

On the international stage, Mendy has represented France on a total of 58 times at every level from U16 through to U21, finding the net three times.

Handed his senior debut in March of this year, he has since turned out for Les Bleus on four occasions.

The Prospects

Having parted company with Aleksandar Kolarov, Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna over the close-season, Guardiola’s transformation in the full-back area now looks complete.

Mendy and fellow new boy Kyle Walker seem set to become the club’s first-choice left-back and right-back respectively, with the versatile signing Danilo offering cover in both positions.

There are two ways to look at Guardiola’s defensive chopping and changing last season. Considering that Clichy and Sagna were the most used players at left-back and right-back respectively with 22 and 13 starts in those roles, we can anticipate heavy rotation at full-back once again.

On the other hand, it can also be argued that the City manager was unconvinced by the previous options at his disposal – he even played Jesus Navas as a right-back on four occasions. With his own players now on board, he could be less inclined to tinker.

Having toyed with the idea of “inverted full-backs”, Guardiola’s decision to acquire Mendy and Walker suggests that he’s looking to utilise a more conventional approach in his second year at the Etihad. Although both new arrivals are comfortable as wing-backs, it seems more likely that City will opt for a four-man defensive unit.

Certainly, the need for improvements was obvious – with just 16 key passes to his name, Clichy was City’s most creative defender in 2016/17.

It’s a little surprising to learn that Mendy created only 25 chances last term – averaging a key pass every 82.4 minutes. Indeed, that is less frequent than Walker’s 69.3 minutes with Spurs, as he recorded six FPL assists, more than any defender.

A further scan of the data reinforces the theory that Mendy is more likely to be a provider of opportunities rather than a direct goal threat. He averaged an effort on goal every 147.1 minutes in 2016/17, which is very similar to Walker’s 142.3 minutes.

In terms of defensive contribution, Walker also has the edge – he completed 80% of attempted tackles to the Frenchman’s 68.5%.

However, the Frenchman’s delivery from the flank is far more impressive. He completed 24% (36 of 150) of his crosses in Ligue 1 last term, while Walker registered a success rate of 13.5% (13 of 96 crosses).

Mendy’s performance for this metric compares well to Southampton’s Cedric Soares – who completed more crosses (43 of 144) than any other FPL defender. The Saints’ right-back succeeded with 29.9% of his attempts.

Indeed, in his first interview for the club, Mendy was quick to outline his talent as a provider of goals.

“I can bring a lot of creativity in the game. I can offer different solutions. I like to play as full-back and provide assists for the strikers.”

That potential for assists could be a deciding factor for those considering investing in a defence that, despite chalking up just 12 clean sheets, still conceded fewer shots than any other side last season.

As evidenced towards the latter Gameweeks, the fitness of Vincent Kompany will impact on our assessment of the City defence and their likelihood of shutting out opponents.

Valued at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League, the Belgian – who notched three times in 11 league appearances – offers a goal threat and could remain our favoured route should he stay fit.

At present, though, Walker has proven the more popular pick. Initially listed at former club Spurs, the England international is owned by 18.9% despite a price tag of 6.5.

Mendy comes in at the same cost as Walker in FPL, although interestingly he’s been priced at 8.3 in Sky Sports. That’s a full 1.2 less than Walker (9.5), with only Eliaquim Mangala – at 7.6 – cheaper in the City defence.

Mendy’s pacey raids and supply of crosses look set to become a prominent feature of City’s attack. Meanwhile, encounters with Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford and Palace in the first six Gameweeks afford him an early opportunity to impress. He’s expected to be fit for the start of the season, though Pep Guardiola confirmed this Wednesday that he’ll be out for a couple of weeks with a minor knock.

While it seems sensible to allow Mendy time to settle into life at the Etihad, his displays against Spurs and City in last season’s Champions League – where he supplied an assist against both clubs – hints that he is equipped to make an immediate impact.

I'm going without Pool and I have no concerns. I don't believe in "coverage" anyway.

One suggestion is to choose the lowest-owned 4.0 defender as you are better protected from price drops.

You are basically saying 10 players cause Carrol gets 1 or 2 maybe.
What happens when one or two get injured or worse rotated. I am all for fodder on the bench but this looks a step too far.

For a start the 12 million on utd at the back could be downgraded to upgrade Carrol.

True, willing to cross that bridge when it comes to it in mid September. They have a nice start and if Pep plays them both together like he did at the end of last season it could be glorious. Prefer both of them to Laca and Morata too.

Any Brighton fans that can give the lowdown on the lad suttner?

Is he nailed at left back?

Seems quite attacking and got assist last night.

            A better option than dunk?

Is Financial Fair Play still in effect? If so, would anyone mind explaining how it works? I've heard it regularly mentioned, but unsure how it works and why the likes of City and United don't seem to be affected by it given their ridiculous spending

As a QPR fan it is still very much alive.

In short, it was pushed through by teams like Man Utd and City to stop a situation like Blackburn Rovers ever happening again.

It means someone like the late Jack Walker can't just come along, take a small club and bankroll them to the title.

it's about not spending a certain % of their revenue. Those clubs have very high revenues due to tv money and 'sponsorship' etc..

An are where big clubs push boundaries are sponsorship deals. Man City a case in point where sponsorship is an excuse for cash injection and the owner is the same as the sponsor.

Simply put, clubs can't spend more than they earn. However, the main point is if a player is bought for example 10 mil and they give a player a 5 year contract, that spend is amortized over 5 years. (2 mil per year) wages are written off over the period it is paid over. (Same as depreciating a fixed asset on your balance sheet.
A spanner is thrown in the works when image rights are paid to the club or the player. Emirates Airlines might pay a club directly as a sponsor but might pay directly the spin offs to the player.
When a club offers say 100k per week to a player, it could be divided as so:
              50 k per week wages. 10k per week appearance fees, 10 k bonus's 10k player insurances 10 k pension 10k image rights.
There are before and after tax issues also.
Nobody knows exactly what clubs pay players. Undisclosed transfer fees are up to clubs. Wages are i a private domain.
There is a lot more to it and my numbers are fictional to explain my point.

There are two types. Revenue and wage. Your expenditure is not allowed to exceed your revenue by x percentage. Your wages are not allowed to increase by more than x percentage of their current amount. One carries a fine (no one cares about this one) the other can carry competition penalties or bans.

Like some I'm considering a back four with Alonso who basically plays in the midfield anyway. It's a cheap route into a mid with full clean sheet awards.

That said, he got less points than Cahill last season, admittedly he played 6 less games. But doesn't that worry anyone? For a premium 'defender' who you're getting for his attacking potential.

Nah. Only Baines was worth that pricetag. So many great heavy hitters upfront so no room for 7.0 def who eventually might get rotated.

If he has spent any time working on his finishing over the summer he could score 50% more goals this year. He wasn't even up to full potential last year.

Willian or Alonso to start season? Not sure can justify both and position not important as will play 4 3 3 or 3 4 3 depending which I go for.

Maybe Alonso is the better option for longer term. Personally I have Willian in my team but I'm not so sure about him as he might be a transfer waiting to happen and the fixtures aren't great either.

he's pretty nailed for first 4 fixtures and you can't look much beyond that anyway

no Hazard and Pedro now looks shafted

he'll arguably be the key attacker

Thing is, 7.0m in midfield is just enough money to be confident that a 7.0m or below player will emerge so you can switch Willian out when Hazard comes back. I'll have him for a few weeks.

That's the major bonus. No need for that extra transfer and you can leave him there all season without missing price rises.
Then again if it helps the balance of your starting side then it may be best to go with Willian.

Who will you go to when Hazard is back? I guess 5-2-3 is one of the riskier of formations as you'll be be more likely to have a non playing bench

That's the big problem I am more concerned with not having Alli in there than Hazard and even the .5 required to do Cout > Mane.

Biggest problem I see with 532 is the fodder is expensive at 4.5 each as opposed to 4.0 at the back.

Yes it does think you need minimum of 106 to get the most out of the dgw At the end of the season. I can this team will not do so easily.

Defenders this year I feel are better value for money and can see why you'd go 5 at the back it enables you to have heavy hitters upfront. However there are a couple of issues with this tactic:
There tends to be less cleansheets at the start of the season, where clubs go for early points, near the end of the season lower clubs tend to shut up shop. So defender points are weighted more in the second half.
                  2) it's not flexible. If a bandwagon comes along in midfield it's hard to get them in.
I tried this last year I'm going for 4-3-3

Thanks yeah the 433 looks so more balanced. And does give more flexibility to get on the bandwagon and cheers for heads up on weighting of CS thoughout the season.

Morning all. Anyone considering Harry Winks in midfield? Obviously a rotation risk, but only lost his place last season through injury. 5m, so if he doesn't play, Carroll or RLC can come off bench. Decent facilitating 4th/5th midfielder? Playing for Spurs so far in pre-season.

Chelsea 2017 players out: Atsu, Oscar, Aké, Cuadrado, Begovic, Traore, Chalobah. TOTAL £117m plus loan fees for Zouma, Brown, RLC, Abraham and others.

Chelsea 2017 players in: Bakayoko, Morata, Rüdiger. TOTAL £119m.

It's therefore not surprising that Chelsea still have transfer funds available. In net terms that have not really spent anything at all and they still have a fee to come for Costa, whatever and whenever that may be.

I think we've done smart transfers this summer. We could buy the sold players anytime we want if they do well due to the buy-back clause and the people we've bought too are experienced, have age on their hands and are decent inn their fields. Plus, the loanees have been loaned to PL clubs so they can monitor them even closer and better. Hope their talents are recognized and they too are given a chance in the future like Moses and Boga.

Chelsea's business model is impressively effective. Buying already good young players, doing very little to develop them, sending them out on loan so other clubs carry the development burden, and selling them on for a tidy profit.

Other clubs do it of course but not as [cynically? Not sure if this is the right word, don't want to sound too negative]

Well, you under-estimate the Chelsea Academy a bit, the youth win almost every trophy going, they use the same Cobham facilities as the 1st team (the complex is huge) and have the best of coaching. Aké, Chalobah, RLC, Boga, Brown, Baker, Solanke and others are all Academy products (although Aké and Brown were signed from other clubs at age 16).

So, Chelsea do have a big hand in the development of many of these players. Others, like Bertrand Traore, are more as you describe. But even with such players, Chelsea have a big support system in place, they have a designated member of the Chelsea coaching staff assigned even when on loan, are regularly watched in games, get extra coaching support (if their loan club agrees) and so on. Plus Chelsea have given Vitesse (where quite a few get their early top league experience) support in terms of facilities and coaching in general. So it's a deal more invested than 'buy them, loan them, sell them for a profit'.

I don't really see it to be cynical because the young players are given every chance to make a great career. The only problem is that so few make it through to the Chelsea 1st team and that is a disappointment to many Chelsea fans. I always thought Aké would follow JT into the team, he was amazing in the youth system and captained Chelsea at every age level. Anyone who has seen him play can tell that he has a very steady head for someone his age as well as being talented. Solanke was another one, potentially he's just as good as Rashford. I was disappointed to see him go but that's the problem Chelsea now have - the youngsters don't believe they can really nail a position in the squad. And they are right. 🙁

The 19-23 age bracket is incredibly difficult for the very top teams. Bringing players through at that age, when they are still likely to make mistakes or lack consistency, is risky. Especially at a club that is expected to win trophies. Sometimes it's down to luck. Had Soldado and Adebayor been performing well a couple of seasons back, Kane might still be waiting for his chance at Spurs. Or have been sold, like Lukaku was, only to see him triple or quadruple in value, as Lukaku has.

Anyway, all this is tl;dr I expect. It's just a subject that interests me.

My opinion is Chelsea have done the smartest business so far. They are acting in a sustainable way and buying youngsters in previous seasons is proof of sustainability.
I still think there is a little more work to do to compete in the CL/PL though.

Big change from this time last year

In: Batshuayi, Kante, Luiz, Alonso. Total £119m
Out: Salah, Djilibodji, Marin. Total £25.5m plus the many loans.

I suppose it's no surprise that the champions are broadly happy with their squad and adding a few key targeted upgrades.

Any thoughts/advice on what to do with the spare 1.0m I have?

                        - I'm not sure on Austin, but there's also no-one else under the 8.0 bracket I like.
                        - Could upgrade Lindolof to Luiz/Azpi I guess
                        - Cedric to Bertrand maybe

                        Foster - Myhill
                        Trippier - Lindolof - Cedric - Dunk - Meet
                        KDB - Eriksen - Willian - Phillips - Carroll
                        Lukaku - Jesus - Austin

                        Cheers in advance!!

I would use the 1.0 to go Lindelof -> Bailly
                          Cedric -> Bertrand

Lindelof is an uncertain starter at present. Looks like his starting is dependent on the super cup performance. Cedric has had no preseason and may not make it for gw1.

If however they both are looking like they will start, with oils consider downgrading Mee to 4.0 defender, Eriksen to Salah/Coutinho and Jesus to Kane

Anyone kind enough to RMT please.

                        DeGea
                        Cedric, Trippier, Kompany, Daniels
                        William, Zaha, Phillips
                        Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

                        Subs: Elliot, Carroll, Loftus, Dunk.

Any recommendations? I know the mid is fairly light due to heavy hitters.

                        A - Kane and Willian
                        B - Alli and Morata

A seems more short term for me (Willian risk when Hazard returns) whilst B has the short term uncertainty of Morata...

What do you guys think? Anyone else got a similar dilemma?
