Moving Target

Scout Report – Javier Hernandez

Following the addition of club-record signing Marko Arnautovic, West Ham United reinforced their attacking options further with the signing of Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez for £16 million.

The 29-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Hammers and hopes to repay the faith of Hammers manager and long-term admirer, Slaven Bilic:

“Slaven Bilic was a massive influence on me signing. Since I joined Bayer Leverkusen he has wanted me, he spoke with me, he tried to do everything he could to bring me here, but it was impossible for a lot of reasons. Now I am here though; I am going to be his player and I want to give him back that confidence and try to do my best to make him happy.”

The History

Hernandez linked up with Guadalajara in his native Mexico at the age of nine, and progressed to make his first-team debut in 2006.

He spent the next four seasons with the club, and registered 29 goals and 11 assists in 78 matches in all competitions, before joining Manchester United in the summer of 2010.

The Mexican enjoyed a strong first season at Old Trafford, producing 20 goals and five assists in 45 outings in all competitions, helping his side secure another Premier League title.

But Hernandez found it tougher to earn regular starts over the next few seasons, with injuries and the arrival of Robin van Persie in August 2012 limiting his first-team opportunities.

He was loaned out to Real Madrid for the 2014/15 season and totalled seven goals and seven assists in 23 league matches before signing for Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent basis in August 2015.

His first season in Germany was very successful, racking up 17 goals and three assists in 28 league matches.

There was a slight drop-off last term though, as he managed only 11 goals and three assists in 26 appearances.

After representing Mexico at U20 level, Hernandez made his senior debut against Colombia in October 2009.

He currently has 96 caps to his name and has scored an eye-catching 48 goals.

The Prospects

Blighted by an impotent attack last season, West Ham turned to Andy Carroll, Andre Ayew, Ashley Fletcher, Jonathan Calleri, Diafra Sakho and Simone Zaza, but failed to stumble on an assured solution. The addition of a player of Hernandez’s quality looks to be a shrewd piece of business.

The Mexican has a wealth of experience at the highest level and boasts predatory instincts that the Hammers have lacked for several seasons. His enthusiasm should also be a positive in the dressing room.

Although the 29-year-old may not be as quick as he used to be, his movement in the box remains very impressive and his all-round game has improved since he was last seen in England.

For Leverkusen, Hernandez played both as a lone striker and also as part of a front two in a 4-4-2 formation.

His addition will provide Bilic with plenty of options. The new boy could lead the line in a 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 or 3-4-3, or potentially be stationed alongside Carroll in a two-man attack.

West Ham scored just 47 goals last season, down from 65 in 2015/16, and the arrival of Hernandez should go a long way to rectifying that key problem.

The Hammers scored from a mere 9.4% of their efforts in 2016/17 – only five teams had a worse record.

But with a goal conversion rate of 21.1% at Leverkusen, Hernandez’s arrival should help rectify the Hammers’ profligacy in front of goal.

In terms of the Mexico international’s underlying statistics, he averaged a shot every 34.9 minutes in 2016/17, which was slightly inferior to Carroll (33.7). However, the target man recorded a conversion rate of 17.9%, with 14 of his 39 attempts made in the air.

Hernandez didn’t really offer much in terms of creativity, though, producing a key pass every 82.5 minutes, slightly stronger than Carroll (93.8).

While Carroll sets you back 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after finding the back of the net just seven times last term, the clinical Hernandez has also been favourably priced and comes in at 7.0. Similarly, he demands a fee of 10.7 in Sky Sports, some 0.7 more expensive that Carroll.

But West Ham face four road trips and a visit from Spurs in the first six matches, so their attacking assets are expected to struggle for investment early on.

That should allow us the opportunity for some early scouting as we assess Hernandez’s impact on the new-look Hammers forward line.

His goal scoring record certainly suggests he’ll be able to thrive at the London Stadium, although Bilic will have to ensure his side play to the Mexican’s strengths. There’s also the hope that he’ll be handed spot-kicks duties – a factor that would have an impact on Manuel Lanzini’s stock as a midfield asset.

Only West Bromwich Albion and Burnley had fewer touches in the opposition box than West Ham last season – that will need to change given that all 37 of Hernandez’s Premier League goals were scored inside the penalty area.

“Little Pea’s” return to the Premier League provides Fantasy managers with a mid-price option capable of producing 15 goals, something that was lacking throughout much of last season.

Indeed, with Arnautovic, Ayew, Lanzini, Michail Antonio, and Robert Snodgrass all vying for pitch-time in the Hammers’ attacking midfield berths, Hernandez should enjoy a decent supply line and solve our third forward conundrum.

Forget "coverage". Just get the players you think will score the most pts.

e.g. KDB may play for City, but is he going to score more pts than the cheaper Alli? Probably not. He'll certainly score a lot less goals.

I agree about forgetting coverage. Perhaps you're underestimating how much people like KDB. I for one am picking him ahead of Alli, Eriksen, Ozil, Cout and Salah simply because I prefer him. There's also the matter of him being easily downgradable, which wasn't on my mind when I picked him.

Fair enough, KDB does have potential for sure.

I like the fact that KDB is cheaper than last year and based on the City squad has more potential to rival Alli in terms of total points. Still feel that Alli will outscore him by virtue of total goals, but KDB will be an assist monster this year for City.

I think long term coverage doesn't make much sense, but in terms of short term there are other factors such as fixtures, pre season form, especially at the beginning of the season I think it is good to get mids and forwards from at least 4 of the top 6, and then get more or less players from teams that start well or bad. E.g. Tottenham don't start well usually which is why people aren't going for both Alli/Kane and also due to the Wembley factor which could affect their system immediately.

I completely agree that it is more fun to have a stake in multiple games. If all things else is equal (and it never is!) then I want to obsess over as many matches as possible!

Same could arguably be said for defensive blocks too.

      Imo

      Best 4.5 Gk: Bego
      Best 4.5 defender: Francis
Best 5 defender: Daniels (along side the Soton ones)

Yep. I've currently got Begovic and Francis because I see them individually as two of the best options in their categories 🙂

Cool, I'm with you there. There's always one 4.5 that storms it (McAuley last year) and he could be the man. Lascelles/Yedlin/Clark could be too but I'm not bothered in a stringent rotation.

Seems like he's nailed, but someone has to miss out...

He's a decent, marauding FB on his day (Francis).

4.5 bargains over the years? Leicester 15-16 are another example, Swans/Newc 11-12

          • 7 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Francis isn't nailed IMO as Adam smith is younger and just signed a contract and share minutes. Surely someone more attacking is a better 4.5 defender such as dunk or suttner as they are more nailed and more attacking and have pretty good fixtures and rotate with teams like Bournemouth stoke and even Southampton.

Suttner rotates quite well with Francis. I heard Smith may play in midfield. One to monitor though.

I'm going no where near Mr. Dunk. Red card-magnet.

Not sure it works with this scenario

KDB can outscore Alli too, especially in the start of the season because of the fixtures

If you have Kane I can understand going for KDB over Alli because you have the main man at Spurs "covered"

I think KDB provides excellent City 'cover', but signing someone like Ramsey to 'cover' Arsenal would be naive.

Downgrade Mee to long. Otherwise it's good. Also I'd think about getting Zaha or salah in somehow. Also do Foster to Begovic. Begovic and Elliot rotate well and Bournemouth will get clean sheets with Ake and Begovic whereas WBA are going downhill

Indeed, as is Defoe. But they are 8m, so I can see why people are a bit reluctant.

FWIW I got Benteke as my 3rd forward, can't resist HUD in gw1.

Is Defoe safer? He had poor second half of the season. I guess he can rely on penalties, but Afobe can support King better if Defoe doesn't deliver.

    Pick 1

    A) 5m mid with a 4.5 defender?
    B) 5m defender with a 4.5 mid?

      B) - Not many great 5m mids - but upgrading from 4.5 to 5.0 for a defender makes a big difference

How much do you feel United have improved their squad for this season?

Im not a United fan and found them a bit uninteresting to watch last season so didn't watch all their games.. Were they unlucky? With Lukaku - do you think they will be a higher scoring or more attacking team?

Will massively depend on if Utd get a new signing enabling Jose to play 352. Currently it looks to be much the same 433 or 4231which is very slow. Just going on the pre-season games.

I'd only get Lukaku and a defender unless Utd sign a left wing back or CDM to allow Pogba more freedom.

Martial would be a great target if Jose includes him in first XI. Showed amazing pre season performances

I don't know if we were unlucky, but we created sooo many chances we just couldn't put them away. I think, in Lukaku, we have a certified PL bagsmen. He will put those chances away.
Slightly concerned about his first touch though.

As these guys said above, we need a CDM to free Pogba up, then you'll see a difference.

My question is then - Will Lukaku get the service he needs compared to Jesus (if Jesus is a regular starter which I'd expect him to be)

        1. SWANCK
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

I'd say so, we weren't short of service last campaign. Literally so many chances botched/woodworked we should of had 10/15 goals more.

Lukaku will be fed, but will his first touch finish the meal? I certainly hope so.

In regards to Jesus, he will be sharing goals with Aguero, whereas Kaku would potentially be sharing goals with Rashford which in my books puts Kaku in a better position than Jesus.

Toby1 you can bet on that.......i am not a united fan myself but holy hell they should had 10 or more goals last season and with Kaku in the mix they will be up there .....watching the pre season games united looking so dangerous... fixures early on looking great too..... yes they will be way more attacking team then last year and i will bet my right testicle on that .. .:-)

We were missing a player that is capable of bagging 4 in one game, we have that now. We should finish a lot more chances than we did, i'll bet my right testicle on that!

I'm seeing a lot punts on newly bought players. Is this a conscious tactic that people play to get ahead of the dullites that stick with tried and trusted players from the least season? Or is it wiser to get through the first few weeks of the season, view the stats and then latch onto the flourishing new players?

There's been loads of players that are good from day 1.

Ba, Agüero, Sigurdsson, Cisse, Fabregas, Mata, Costa and Payet among many more.

It's important to find players that will be nailed on and central to their team. I think the biggest mistake people make is that they assume a world class player will perform at their best immediately. You need to find players that are underpriced to such a degree that you can accept a few blanks with early substitutions or similar hiccups.

    Hello guys!

Always enjoy watching RMTs but never posted mine so why not change for once

    Forster (Foster)
    Trippier, Bailly, Yoshida (Lascelles, Rangel)
    Willian, KDB, Can, Mkhitaryan (RLC)
    Kane, Rooney, Lukaku

Have a strong habit of poor subs to start so don't worry about it, will WC pretty soon.

    What do you guys think?
    Thx!

      knock.5 off keepers

      Cedric more nailed than Yoshida
Can was good to me last year at 5.0
I like the Mktyr differential if he is nailed on.
Ronney has 1 good fix, I'm gonna see what he does and I think fixtures are better around GW%. IMO GL

Look bud if you're posting about some closed league that is open only to people from a particular country, then it's most likely against the T&Cs of this site, if not the spirit of FFS. Also from your comment history it looks like you've posted it four times in the last day or so.

Please refrain from posting about this, or alternatively make the league open to all comers. Cheers from a fellow Indian and user of this site who is against discrimination of all kinds.

I tried making it open for all. I don't use PayPal hence Paytm was the only option. And Paytm isn't acceble anywhere except India.
(Paytm account can only be used by creating a valid account by using a working Indian mobile number , Paytm wallet needs to run as per RBI policy Hence you can't create Paytm account using UK mobile number)

So made it for Indians only....
