The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

I got more league assists than Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero last season.

    I was a left-back for a relegated Bundesliga team.

    Appreciate the greatness.

You'll also be facing Agüero, Jesus, Sané and De Bruyne GW1 🙂

If my phone changes De Bruyne to "Detected Deleted" once more I'll no it's not a coincidence and it has actually detected I'm talked shite and deleted it.

Okay I'll ask the question in a more in-the-box kind of manner, so I don't get trolled. Imagine this is your perfect team, with your personally preffered formation.

Which do you think should score more in the first 6-10GWs?

    A) Lukaku + Lacazette + rotating 4.5 mids
    B) Austin + Lacazette + Eriksen/Alli
    C) Lukaku + Austin + Sane

Too difficult to say because Austin will most likely be injured before he gets to 10 games unfortunately.
The rotating 4.5 miss us a bad idea imo. Much better to have a more balanced side than one spot getting you 2 points every week.

Think it could work out to be honest

        Fabianski
        Alonso - K'las - Trippier - Bertie - Cedric
        De Bruyne - Loftus-Cheek
        Kane - Lukaku - Lacazette

Elliot | T. Carroll, Cork, Chalobah

Trying to decide what's myth and what's not. The majority of criticisms of my team seem to be myth, with one or two being mostly myth, with a bit of concern I might genuinely hold myself, but feel it's probably worth it.

Also I'm already bored of the template.

        1. Ludo
          • 10 Years

I don't think attacking rotation works, that's the main thing. So I don't think you're any better off having options there than playing Carroll every week.

With 4.5m defenders, I do think you can get more points by playing the fixtures. That's all I'll say about that team.

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 8 months ago

Well that's cool with me. I'll play Carroll every week unless he looks crap or someone else looks better. At least I can give myself a playing bench and try for the long game, and hopefully save WC unless I suddenly need a proper midfield.

I like that I'm avoiding all the non-premium risks, basically, besides the cheapest players, which are much less risky coz the stakes are lower (lowest besides 4.0 defenders/GKs).

Chelsea v Arsenal Community Shield match is on 6th August at 14 BST and Madrid v Man Utd Super Cup match is on 8th August at 19:45 BST. These are the first competitive matches for Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd before the season starts. So it will be better if you have your FPL drafts after 8th August so that you can get to know the preferred/ strongest first XI of these 3 teams. 🙂

It doesn't look balanced in any possible way. To load your team up with as many star players as possible, you are ignoring other factors like fixtures, form etc.

          1. Teror
            • 9 Years
            6 years, 8 months ago

Well, you look at the points tables at the end of the season and your Kane's and your Sanchez's and your Hazard's are always up top. Star players are stars for a reason and the real genius is nabbing the cheap hidden gems as they go on scoring sprees like Josh King last season.

Also: Citeh, Man U, and Spurs have really good fixtures early on. West Brom too. Southampton as well. So your observation is a bit off. Thanks for the input, tho.

I couldn't do it! No idea how Lacazette will settleminto the premier league. I've no doubt he's quality & by the end ofnthe season should have scored 20 ish league goals... But i'm not running the risk of him taking 3 or 4 games to find his feet. Jesus should come out of the traps fast this year as he's had 7 or 8 months in england now & looks a good FPL player

Tough. I would go with A, Sane being a rotation risk and Liverpool spreading the points all over the attack. KDB feels more safe, and Pogba is a nice punt.

I think I've made the best 4-4-2 team I possibly can. Ideas for improvements?

    Foster
    Alonso - Kompany - Trippier - Cedric
    KDB - Willian - Ramsey
    Kane - Lukaku - Hernandez

    Subs: Elliot. Carroll, Romeu, Huhnemeier

That actually looks great - very nice team, looks almost over budget!

Yeah, I know. It looks too expensive. Might be good. Could also be that I've picked names rather than points.

I think it serves as a good example on how much you have to sacrifice elsewhere to get in Sanchez.

hart has terrible fixtures until gw7
Coleman is less likely to play than Elliot
if you drop Aguero to KDB you get 2.0 + City fixtures
That can get you a 6.5 4th mid. IMO GL

Can we make it a rule that if you're posting a RMT you only post 2 of your 3 strikers?

Because we know the third one is lukaku - i haven't seen a RMT without him for the last hour or two

    Chicharito - Lukaku - Aguero (c)

Good day to you all, it's the first time I've done this but would welcome your honest feedback on this lot for GW1:

    Foster
    Cedric, - Alonso, - Milner, - Trippier
Willian, - De Bruyne, - Alli
    Lukaku, - Firmino, - Defoe

    Subs: Elliot, Loftus-Cheek, Rangel, Carroll

There's no Arsenal but that's just how I like it

Anyone considering playing 1 up top?

    Forster
    Valencia,Trippier,Cedric,Alonso
    Coutinho, Alli, Willian, KDB, Zaha
    Lukaku

Subs - only 4.0 and 4.5 so forget

    Thoughts on starting 11?

I think you need 2 of either lukaku / Kane / aguero. Way too light for me up top

Swap Zaha for Austin if nailed on especially considering his fixtures?

      Nope.

Who would you captain?...just one captain choice means you will miss out on easy captain picks...

Good team though if we didn't need (c) picks...

Everyone's talking about Morata, Lacazette etc. not being good choices because they need time to settle into the league. I don't find this convincing. They're both exceptional strikers and will probably burst out of the gates just like Lukaku, Kane and Jesus will. Yeah there's the "English style" that people think players will take time adapting to, but now the Prem's taken over by foreigners so is there really still an "English Style". And I mean look at Ibra last season, did he take long to adapt?

Sorry for the long essay and thoughts?

Think you're right, some players settle straight in and perform, others may take a while longer. This season we have some excellent choices up top.

I think it's just a slightly bigger gamble. And what would you think if Costa and Giroud stay? Would you be quite so convinced they're not a rotation risk after 3 games?
