The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Alonso is really getting hyped now.

    Is he really worth 7m?

Yes imo. It's genuinely like having another midfielder who can get clean sheets.

Not sure... daniels was within 40 points of him last year & is only 5.0... Is 40 points worth 2.0m? Could see Daniels improving slightly whereas Alonso can't really do any better than last year, right?munlessmhenscores 10 goals from defence etc

I think he's a great pick and could well be worth the 7m but I'm happy with my team as is. Trying to fit him in means I have to downgrade some of my preferred options in other positions which I don't want to do.

Also howmmuch will the CL impact him? It's a brutal schedule & for a maurauding wingback it'll be even worse

He will outscore every player on the entire game except the top 10 or so. Would you ask if 7.0 for Coutinho, Sigurdsson, Defoe, Ozil etc was worth it?!?!

Let's remember, with everyone suddenly loving Zaha, that Alonso beat him by 30 points and actually played a few matches less than him!

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

yeah but you can get say, Daniels, and spend that extra 2m upgrading Zaha to Coutinho..........

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

also you have to keep Alonso for ages so that you don't miss his haul, whereas Daniels can become loads of different options with good form/fixtures.

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 8 months ago

That's a good point. But with Alonso you won't need to take hits for your strategy to work, or to ruin your stategy by keeping Daniels when you don't want him because you have an injury elsewhere you need to fix. The long-game Alonso strategy is safe in that regard.

            1. SADIO SANÉ
              • 8 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

yeah that's true, but those player/s can actually get more points than Alonso if you transfer well enough.

Also, what if Alonso goes a while without an attacking return, do you cut your loses or be patient? (quite a few transferred him out before his haul last season). What if that haul never comes or he gets injured before it does?

Solid. My only worry is how flexible the midfield is. How many others in that range would be worth transferring in if needed

Thanks WoodCA, i suppose flexibility is jumping onto whoever performs out of the £7m bracket.

Who knows, Aguero may even get dropped forcing me to re-think and distribute funds accordingly.

Planning an early WC so fixture wise i think its ok?

I agree, but dont think its possible or wise to get an even spread for your team. Pricing this year almost forces you to invest in defence and strikers, too many premium options this year, yet only Sanchez, KDB, Hazard, Spurs and Pool mids are in the same range.

Sanchez and Hazard are currently no goes, KDB isnt explosive enough and Aguero will score better. Spurs mids wont score as much as Kane, Pool have Champions League games during the first few gameweeks so rotation could hit hard.

The way i see it is if you invest heavily up front (which allows for jumping on bandwagons - Lacazette/Morata/Jesus at ease then there are more options there than there are in midfield.

        1. The Big Fella
          • 7 Years

Yes. Interesting take on it and Zaha and Willian both are in good form at the moment. Stanislas though? What about Phillips?

I like it. The midfield is weak but the back 4 and front 3 make up for it.

        • 6 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

Thanks Member, i cant see spreading funds evenly across all sections any more useful. Pricing suggests you spend it in defence or attack.

Lots of hope on Zaha and Willian continuing their form

You thought about 5-2-3. I've been playing with 5 at the back and think it's the best formation. Midfielders seem to be worse value than defenders and Attackers. You can basically get 3 premium strikers, 5 very good defenders and 2 good midfielders.

      .5 too much on keepers
      2.0 too much on defense
and if there's an inj in back, probs ensue.
that 2.5 turns crouch> Rod Carroll> Fraser. IMO GL

Oh God, what even is this. No offence but a lot needs changing. Defence is way too strong, get rid of Walker or Valencia as they are way too expensive. No need for Alli/Kane double up remove one. If you remove Kane put Lukaku, if Alli put Coutinho. YOU NEED LIVERPOOL. Attack is crap.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Worth doing Crouch + Austin > Chicarito + fletcher? Just to assure you have a playing 2nd striker?

The Spurs double up could work and Alli is a bargain but may be better to swap him for Liverpool (though they have CL playoffs in the first few GWs).

Walker is a bit over priced IMO, maybe downgrade one of your keepers as well

Monreal as part of a back 3 doesn't really scream value to me. Maybe go Daniels/Ake and upgrade Elliot to Fabianski for a very neat GK rotation.

    Fellow LFC fans....

Thoughts on Robertson started as LB ahead of Milner.

I think we need a more natural LB but Milner on the pitch provides some experience. Definately see Milner being that utility player, but with a full compliment of in position players, I see him serving this role from the bench.

Not an LFC fan but i'm not wasting time with the liverpool defence conundrum

I've brought in henderson for liverpool cover

Hendo will play the DM role. Wasted pick imo. I'd go Lallana if you want LFC cover and short on money. However, I think Salah, Mane or Coutinho are the only secure options for attacking points. If not getting them look elsewhere

It's a good move by klopp. Better to have a more natural LB. Milner is an excellent team player who can serve well in many positions.

I'm going premium strikers this year initially, but he certainly goes on the watch.ist alon with J-Rod & Rooney... But Charlie Austin still top of it at 6.5 imo, if he stays fit he'll be an absolute steal.
