The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

He's young and is going to need time to adjust like every new player. It's not rocket science. You're more than welcome to go with him. I'm just giving my two cents. Please tell me how it goes for you once the games start.

Same sort of names that most (incl myself have come up with)..

How are West Ham's fixtures for Chicarito in the first few weeks & will Willian really deliver big given Conte clearly not fancying him as a first XI player last year despite him being player of the year the year before?
Looking ahead to GW2 & a likely tough game at Wembley (again) for Spurs vs Chelsea I'm unsure if Francis will get in the Bournemouth first XI & allow a confident substitute in for Trippier. Francis a likely/ideal sub if you ask me given his Championship credendials/ability to play RB aswell as CB plus the £20m Eddie Howe has shelled out to get Ake back and the performances of A.Smith at RB. Dunk a good rotation call looking ahead to GW 4 though (WBA@home) considering Spurs fixture at Goodison that week.

Any thoughts on my GW 1 team designed with all individual GW 1-4/5 fixtures in mind. Everyone gets a starting XI slot by GW4.. Gonna try to not cost myself points by restricting myself to no transfers until ahead of GW 3 & even then only 2 premium Midfielders & Attackers for other big hitters from other teams.

Both offer attacking returns, so look at defence. Arsenal > City in that regard. Plus Kompany's not reliable to stay injury-free. That might be a headache down the line, it might not.

          - City concedes the fewest shots last season (Bravo...)
          - City's defence looks so much better with Kompany fit
          - Goal threat
          - Bonus magnet
          - Plays for a better team
          - Not a new PL-player, and proven FPL-player when fit (only problem, but can then easily switch)

Not keen on either. Kompany too prone to pick up a knock and Kolasinac will probably knock out a few players and get sent off.

At 6.0 rather Bellerin or David Luiz or find extra for Valencia, Walker or bit more still for Alonso

Kolasnic and Kompany are even prospects, both of them have pros and cons.
Kolasnic offers a goal threat because Wenger will probably play him at wing back. He also looks like he could be very good, he was named in the Bundesliga team of the season. However, the Premier League has a different style of play that may not suit him. Also, if Wenger put him at wingback Arsenal would have to play with three at the back which could leave them slightly more vulnerable and in return less clean sheets. Kompany on the other hand is a Premeir League proven centerback who is capable of scoring from set pieces. On the down side, he has a missed a numerous amount of matches due to injury. Also, it could be debated that Arsenal would still concede less goals than Man City even if they had three at the back. Otamendi and John Stones are very inconsistent. I would take Kolasnic because if he can carry his form into the Premeir League he could get a lot of points. No risk no reward, good luck.

I think you can get away with the defence given Sotons fixtures.
The midfield has one too many premiums and not enough "value" imo. Maybe downgrade Alli to Willian and upgrade Laka to Kane? Or Walters could be someone like Zaha/Rambo or Phillips + 1.0 to be used elsewhere (would allow to start with Defoe and downgrade when his fixtures turn GW 3 and we know more about Chica (his fixtures turn better too).

Hello fellow Scouter's, back after a summer of no FF.

Not been on earlier as I get addicted to tinkering. Haven't seen any pre-season details or read any articles yet. Only 2 players I'll be putting in team so far will be Lukaku and Foster. All other spots ready to rock and roll.

So what's the current RMT template team that's getting boring to see?

My pleasure, though to be honest, due to slightly inflated prices for forwards and mids, there is likely to be a fair bit of diversity between teams, and there are some decent arguments for 442 or 433 formation due to increasing use of wingbacks. I haven't seen Sanchez in hardly any teams due to price and uncertainty of future, but this may well change as soon as he bags his first pre-season brace.

Okay so my Ayew plan got thrown to carbage and this is what I came up today. Martina or Holgate plays in GW1 only as I plan to somewhat rotate the other three:

    Foster | Fabiansky
    Alonso | Ceric | Cresswell | Suttner | Martina/Holgate
    KDB | Eriksen | Coutinho | Mkhitaryan | Carroll
    Lacazette | Chicarito | Austin

What if you select the wrong one from Martina/Holgate?

Seems like a transfer waiting to happen. Considering their tough early fixtures (except GW1, granted) would seem better to wait and see which of them nails down the RB slot.

I just have to be good enouigh not to pick wrong one 🙂 Europe League qualifier matches should tell much on this.

They are only gonna play in GW1 so tough fixtures dont bother me, Palace 4.5m could also be an option if someone emerges there.

Awful front line. You're relying on two strikers from the lower price brackets to perform. Sure there are some good options this season, but I don't think this is smart. You've made it very difficult to make upgrades to these two, and having Lacazette as your most expensive player makes it difficult to upgrade to Kane or Lukaku or Aguero if they hit form. Rest of the team is decent (except Cresswell) but that goes without saying with how little you have invested up front.

      1. Viiksisika
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

It's kinda the same as relying on lower price bracket midfielders. Of course the upgrading will be more difficult as you said which may be a problem. I just cant justify myself picking the most expensive attackers as midfielders are so much cheaper.

Can't see past 4-3-3 to start the season...

    Foster
    Trippier Lindelof Yoshida Alonso
    Willian De Bruyne Ramsey
    Kane Hernandez Lukaku

    Myhill Loftus Romeu Lascelles

    Thoughts?

Considered both but think Kane is safer & more scared of no City, hence De Bruyne.

And easy to downgrade DeBruyne -> Alli. You convinced me 🙂

Without doubt & which one out of Eriksen/Alli is hard enough? Kane, Lukaku, De Bruyne & Alonso all allow downgrades to free up cash and, at the same time, none of them are a gamble to start the season with. Loved Hernandez coming in at 7 today!

Had a tough season last year but Alonso was a saving grace at times! He & Trippier make the 4-3-3 very valid to start with. Good luck my friend, good luck.

Not sure why people think Defoe is a poor player. 15 goals in 37 games for a very poor Sunderland side. Now at a better club where he will get more goalscoring opportunities. He is a year older, but this guy actually takes his fitness seriously - not like he is slouching around like some over 30s.

Who said he's a poor player? But I agree with you his fitness and dedication is excellent and the the compassion he showed to Bradley lowery was amazing. Top bloke. Only thing is if he goes on a run without scoring bournemouth have Wilson, adobe, king so he could be dropped, but that applies to most strikers tbh.

      Who thinks that?

      1. diesel001

So many of the posters here saying Defoe is worse than Gayle, Defoe is worse than Firmino, Defoe is worse than Rooney etc. I'm thinking have they not looked at his record.

Posters going on about Hernandez's goalscoring record - have a look at Defoe's. And that is in the PL which is a tougher league than an 18 team Bundesliga with a summer break.

Who is the most likely LB for Man Utd early doors with Shaw and Rojo crocked? Is it Darmian or Blind? Just thinking either sounds a better shout than Lindelof for the same cost.

I think Darmian is just edging it but there will definitely be some rotation.

Only United defenders I'd feel comfortable with are DDG, Bailly and Valencia

What I mean to say is. I think you can go without Eriksen/Alli if you have Kane, but Eriksen/Alli are not sufficient "cover" for going Kane-less. He's too good to overlook, imo.
