The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      de Gea for me

Neuer is a fine goalkeeper but he gets a lot of admirers because of his sweeping style.. a sweeping style that often lands his team bang in trouble.. i don't get it a keeper is there to stop things happening not to make things happen and invite danger.. that's why they are given gloves.. just my opinion

      neuer

I think there's been many goalkeepers who are technically better at actually saving the ball and have produced much better saves than neuer including de gea

But neuer's reflexes and and shot stopping is still one of the best coupled with his ability to rush out of goal and clear the ball along with the fact that he's so good at positioning himself & spreading out his body to make it seem as if the goal is so small which just intimidates the striker. he's the complete package which just makes him the best imo

cheers lad. i agree with your point too tbf that his sweeping can put his team in trouble but the case can be made that he's put them out of trouble a few times tho. although i must admit i've always wanted to see neuer miss the ball while trying to clear it well off he's line only to leave the striker clean through with a shot on goal. just for the lols

Me too, I think avoid Southampton forwards (Austin, Gabbiadini and Long) because of their uncertainty of starting. Out of personal preference, I'd downgrade Phillips to Mooy (he takes pens and gets forward quite a bit) so you can upgrade Austin to Chicharito.

Or, you could downgrade Austin to J. Rod and upgrade Phillips to Redmond/Tadic

    A. Mee or other 4.5 def (4-3-3)
    B. Tom Caroll as 4th mid (3-4-3)

No, and obviously the ratings are higher in defence. It's not a measure you can use emphatically but it can show you what a player who's done well is a worth v another player who's done well 😆 There is a significant difference on KDB v the 9'5's.

It seems like 4-3-3 formations seem more popular here this year compared to previous years. Any particular reasons for this??

It doesn't feel right going with it. I just imagine Alonso as a midfielder in a 3-4-3

My only thought on it is once they concede, a major point source is just gone for defenders. With the exception of maybe Alonso, midfielders have better chances to get points throughout the game. Id be fine going with 4 at the back but would like flexbility to switch to 352

If Cedric and RLC don't start GW1 you have to hope both Carroll and Cork gain you a point each.

I have a 5-2-3 but my 2nd mid is nailed.

You can afford one possible non-player on your bench. The fact that the others are Naughton and Carroll (both starters) gives sufficient flexibility.

    a) Planning to have DeGea as my ManUtd def cover. Is there any hint Mourinho may rotate him with Romero?
    b) Is Trippier an actually good investment or are we bandwagoning? Spurs weren't the most solid at the back so far in preseason.
    c) Ake or Daniels?
    d) If Cedric does not feature enough in preseason and there are doubts about his involvement in their good early fixtures, is Bertrand worth the extra 0.5 or could someone like Yoshida do the job?
    e) Alonso was very useful for most of us last season, but getting him weakens the rest a lot. Is it that bad not to have him?
    f) Does it feel wise to go without any Liverpool in the beginning, having in mind they must really want to play in ChampsLeague which may cause their mids to rotate?
    g) Currently have Eriksen and Kane, no Alli. Do you agree that when all 3 of them play, Eriksen and Kane are the main threats?
    h) Should I care to find the money to have Zaha, or one of Loftus/Milivojevic can cover that 5th mid spot?
    i) Is experience in PL that important to make you pick a player? Had Lacazette but turned him to Kane, thinking of that.
    j) Would you keep 0.5 in the bank, in order to easily jump to the first bandwagon if needed, without taking a hit?

    DeGea Elliot
    Ake Dawson Cedric Trippier Rangel
    Eriksen Sane Willian Loftus Phillips
    Kane Lukaku Austin

    z) Sorry for the long post, just tried to collect all my thoughts in one.
    Thank you for your time

      a) no, b) Absolutely yes, c) Daniels, d) Bertrand worth the extra but Yoshida is great option too, e) Just imagine him as a £7.0m mid, do you think he plus a £4.5 mid is better than a £7.0m mid combo + £4.5 def? f) Depends if Coutinho goes g) Kane is main threat as he is most explosive, Alli and Eriksen are pretty much even h) Tom Carroll i) yes j) no

For whatever it is worth, I will weigh in.

      a. I would like to know this too since I have this GK combination right now too.
      b. Tripper is a good investment.
      c. I would go with Daniels for now.
      d. Go with Bertrand.
      e. No.
f.I I will probably have a Liverpool mid, but they are not essential. Last year's winner never had one.
      g. I think Alli and Eriksen will both do well this season like last.
      h. I personally don't favor Zaha. He has always trolled me.
      i. I have been burned too often by getting players without PL experience. Players like Ibra are an exception, but I wouldn't get a player without proven PL success. I would not get Lacazette now.
      j. Just depends on the team you can put together. I have done it before. But it may be better to take a hit or two early in the season.

        This is a great answer.

My only additions would be to say that for me Zaha is a great investment at 7m. However, unless you're going 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 you want a 4.5 5th midfielder. Personally I've got Zaha with Carroll in reserve.

Whilst Liverpool have 3 excellent midfielders, the CL rotation factor is, as you say, a real fear early doors. I'm tentatively going with Mane but i might chicken out and start with none for the first 2 or 3 GWs.

      a) Is there any hint Mourinho may rotate DDG with Romero?
No hints that I'm aware of
      b) Is Trippier an actually good investment or are we bandwagoning?
Trippier one of the players that most assures us good value I think. If you drop him I'll be feeling thankful for the advantage you just handed me!
      c) Ake or Daniels?
      Ake for me.
      d) If Cedric/Bertrand/Yoshida?
I guess Cedric might miss a game or two. Don't know why h's miss out on the first 11GWs though. I don't see the value in Yoshida really. He's maybe worth the price and that's it. Bertrand worth the money for the fixtures though imo.
      e) Alonso. Is it that bad not to have him?
Not bad given fixtures. I have him due to the money I have left for that position. Best value in the 6-7 category, but more don't have than do.
      f) Does it feel wise to go without any Liverpool in the beginning. Rotation may be an issue over the season, but can't imagine much at first unless players underperform. So I'd say not much cause for concern yet.
      g) Currently have Eriksen and Kane, no Alli. Do you agree that when all 3 of them play, Eriksen and Kane are the main threats?
Most prefer Alli to Eriksen I think. I lean towards Erik. I only have Kane though. Kane is clearly the main threat.
      h) Should I care to find the money to have Zaha, or one of Loftus/Milivojevic can cover that 5th mid spot?
Depends on formation (I don't know what "5th mid" means for you. If you mean bench, then depends if more important 1st sub or towards 3rd sub. Sounds like a 4.5 mid might be the answer.
      i) Is experience in PL that important to make you pick a player? Had Lacazette but turned him to Kane, thinking of that.
Again I wouldn't worry. Use your judgement watching them. Some players click and others don't. The dataset is too small with so many confounding factors that we can't really jusdge purely from stats.
      j) Would you keep 0.5 in the bank, in order to easily jump to the first bandwagon if needed, without taking a hit?
Not for me, unless I happened tot think the players I can't be improved by 0.5

Morning all, early morning for me and see United are being beaten by the might of Barca @ the moment.. Neymar AGAIN..

Current team while on vacation is looking like:

    DDG - Elliot
    Alonso - Trippier - Dawson - Cedric - 4.0
    Sane - Ramsey - Coutinho - Carroll - RLC
    Kane - Lukaku - Austin

4.0, Carroll and RLC on the bench with Carroll making the odd appearance when required. Interested to hear some thoughts as its been changed a few times out here.. Thanks all 🙂

Looking at 4 at the back rather than 5. How's this looking? In particular, how's the Phillips pick, any better at 6.0? Looking at the fixtures and his 115 pts for about 2/3 of a season I thought the value might be there. Also, might go with Austin for 3rd striker if he looks to be starting at the end of preseason.

    Foster
    Trippier, Cedric, Kolasinac, Alonso
    Alli, De Bruyne, Phillips
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Chicharito

Subs: Myhill, Carroll, Lewis Cook, Yedlin

Prefer A) - of the four players Mane is the least of a gamble imo, proven. The other three are more of a gamble and so better go with one safer pick and one gamble.
