The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Is Ozil a good option?
Have Kane, so think about avoiding Eriksen and Alli. Mane could miss the start o the season. Salah is new to the league.
On the other hand, Ozil is nailed for 90 minutes nearly every game, at some set pieces, not bad fixtures. He finished last season as 9th midfielder in terms of fpl points and that was in a very bad Arsenal season. Sanchez, Hazard and Son are above him , but hey all have some doubts about starting GW1. Even Coutinho could be rotated thanks to CL qualifiers.
    What do you think?

Starting with Ozil over Alli for first two games then switching

Seriously considering Rashford for 3rd striker. Looks nailed on and has fantastic price.

It's between him, Chicharito, Gayle and JRod.

Agree he's a good option but my only issue is you wouldn't want to double up with Lukaku. We don't score enough goals right now

Very similar. If you risk going without Alonso Ramsey can be Alli , might have to go Bert > Cedric too. But has a more balanced look and more flexible for midfield bandwagons going forward.

I like the top 3 I ain't budging from it. With a captain on one of those you are getting close to 1000 points. Well over 1000 is surely attainable from the others. That's how I see it anyway - in simple terms.

Thx mate. I think Ramsey will have a big season and I want an arsenal cover. I have kane so i don't see the need to have alli. Bert will start, cedric may not..

Yeah Ramsey load of potential and seemed to better at back end of the season with formation change. Yeah I gots monitor Cedric but Yosh will have to suffice.

Can't agree on Alli though he has to be excellent value.

Bearing mind that Kun is the best forward in the league and has consistently scored ,massively and has an impressive record of major hauls you would be daft not to consider a nailed on Kun if he 1st choice as a centre forward in one of the most attacking teams in the league.

You are risky the huge ownership of Lukaku getting on for 50 % against Kun around 10%.
If you want a punt it looks good and you know the risks.

Put it like this I would take Kaku out of my 11 before I would take Kane out.

We learned they'll be in trouble if they come up against a front 3 of Messi, Suarez and Neymar every week.

Either of those two are very useful as a 5th defender, usually benched by steps up to cover bad fixtures for you BOU or Baggie 4th defender. Better than a useful 4.0m clogging up the bench.

Edging closer, doing well pre-season. I've got Kaku but am torn between Chico and Rashford as 3rd striker. Might start with Marcus.

Getting nervous about the Coutinho situation. Begining to think Firmino is the safer play, it also means Zaha instead of Austin which I like.

Anyone else considering Firmino as a 3rd striker? 8.5m

      What situation would that be?

Barcelona seem very keen on him. Some talk of him being deeper than usual too, happened a few times last season depending on formation.

Yoshida nailed on at CB? Think I prefer him over Cedric

It looks that way. Excellent alternative but you'd think Southampton would be keen to buy a few CB's. Yoshida and Stevens were 3rd and 4th choice CB's at the start of last season.

Still got to monitor the VVD situation. I think Yosh will start, but by TDD could lose out to a penitant VVD, new CD bought with VVD money or Stephens.

If you are just planning for the first 3-4 weeks he is a great pick.

    4-3-3 with rotating 4.5 mids. A pre-GW4-WC team

Thought I would break up the template RMTs with something different.

The logic: unlike last year, this year we are seeing
    1. lots of great fwd stars,
    2. Several playing 4.5 mids
    3. Lots of good mid-priced def
    4. Very few 'must-pick' mids
    5. Amazing early fixtures for Manu and Sot

    This might look like
    Foster. Elliot
Cedric. Kompany. Lindy. Yoshi. 4.0 Cranie
    KDB. Pogba. RLC. Carroll. Oreo
    Kane. Laca. Lukaku

    what do you think?
Which players would be your must-haves in this structure?

Interesting - I just tried out this which is similar approach...

      Foster
      Alonso Yoshida Daniels
      Salah Phillips Willian
      Aguero Kane Luk

      Bench: scrubs

Can't forget Carrol as 4th mid!

Looks like City are playing 352. Doesn't bode well for Sane.

Love the front three and Sane, not sure about Willian... why is everyone into him?

Go for 8.5 / 9 keeper combo. Defence looks sorted. Fernandinho, Mesa weak links in mid.
      Forward looks sorted. 6.5/10

I'll probably change this...but thoughts? Definitely unsure about Salah

    Foster Fabianski
    Walker Cedric Dann Mee Rangel
    Sane Salah Ramsey Phillips Loftus-Cheek
    Kane Lukaku Chicharito
