The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

I actually have no idea who to get for city.

I even adopt a wait and see approach due to those tasty fixtures.

    Frustrating days...

KDB and Jesus the pick of the bunch for me followed by Kompany.

Up front feeded by KDB. The goals will come.

Not really... Picking wrong player wont be of any use. Just pick a good player from some other team and switch when things are more clear

If you are choosing a player just for the sake of having a Man City player, then its not a good strategy imo

Highly doubt that choosing KDB won't be a disappointment. I get what you're saying but this applies for teams like Southampton or West Brom (both good fixtures.) Doesn't apply for a powerhouse like Man City

They wont score 3 or more goals in every game and even if they do, with so many goalscorers and assisters in that team, chances of big hauls are unlikely coupled with unpredictable rotations... They have premium price tag, tough to justify with so many negatives

We all know, thats just not realistic enough...

Anyway, everyone on their own... All managers are on same ground at start, what I'm saying probably wont be of any use once season starts and what you are saying can be right, so not much to discuss on 😛

Not so - it's sensible advice. If you have no idea who to pick then why just plump for a guess? You are relying on someone who could be replaced by a regular source of points.

Don't understand how your confidence in another player means that this particular player will outscore a player in a high-powered offense. Especially when one of the players could easily be involved in every. single. game.

First RMT of the summer. Would appreciate your thoughts, guys:

    Foster Myhill
    Alonso Bertrand Trippier Mee 4.5
    Alli Salah Willian Stanislas RLC
    Lukaku Jesus Austin

Will monitor both Junior's fitness and RLC's "nailed-on-ness" closer to the time.

Looks so much better playing in the middle of a back three. I always found him to be weak as part a CB pairing - positioning was bad, communication seemed poor.

I don't know if they'll stick with this formation, but he looks comfortable in it.

    Morning lads!

Fairly settled on fielding a 343 with Bailly and Trippier playing every week and Dawson & Lowton alternating for the third spot.

What do you think is the best way to go regarding the gk position? 9.5 to spend.

    A) DDG + 4.0
    B) Heaton + Foster

B gives BUR/WBA double defensive rotation with these fixtures gw 1-7:

I think Sane is starting 90% of the early games.

Willian is only definitely starting until Hazard is back, and Hazard is in light training at the moment. Pedro may miss the start of the season too, but probably not much more.

Ramsey is a gamble. Yes, the system may suit him. Yes, he scored a lot a few seasons ago. But that doesn't mean he'll score well, I think we need to wait and see on him.

I can't tell how often Salah starts. 75%? I really liked what I saw of him at Chelsea though.
