The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Jrod seems to go under radar here? Proven pl striker with excellent starting fixtures.

Not expecting him to bag a brace week in week out but should do pretty well against BOU,bur,STK,bha,WHM

Scored a couple of times in pre-season he is my third strike right now as is very cheap at 6.0

Pulis may still prefer Rondon down the centre but can see J Rod starting down one of the wings

For sure. First proper striker at hawthorns in years. Rondon as a super sub at most.

and like said above. If Rondon starts for some reason Jrod might play as IF / winger

I might for for him. He has the edge over anyone else in that price range and enables KDB and Eriksen in midfield without sacrificing a good defence.

Don't really trust WBA's strikers to score goals though, it's always the defence.

but with those fixtures surely Jrod is worth a try. Who else we got in that price range?

Mounie should be HUD's starting striker at 5.5. Murray for Brighton at 6.0.

Question is if any hit the ground running like a Gray or an Austin

he was for the last 15-20 matches last season. i think he;s instrumental to city on the counter

      Jesus
      Sane Aguero KDB
      SIlva Fernandinho

Think this might be their starting 11. rotation risk is their with likes of sterling and bernardo silva coming from bench

Can't go wrong with that one. Obviously lot will depend on Austin.

Doen't like that Sane pick. Does he even have starting spot in ManC if they keep playing 3-5-2?

yh starting to worry about sane as city has many attacking options at their disposal and there might be rotation

incase of austin if i he's not nailed on could switch to 3-5-2 with tadic or redmond in midfeild

Good. Have a couple of chances culminating in a great shot, brilliantly saved by the keeper

Difficult to know who will play further forward out of him or Kun but for 1mil less I'd say Jesus is the one to go for (if no room for KDB)

      Fraser Forster (Elliot)
      Tripp, Mustafi, Yoshida (dunk, Francis)
      Eriksen, Salah, Fab, Milivojevic (Carroll)
      Aguero, Kane, chicharito

Milivojevic is on set pieces for 5.0,
Can always downgrade Forster & upgrade Mili to 5.5
I feel stupid for no KDB, but can't fit him in

Mili isn't on set pieces. Takes pens and some of the direct fks but Punch takes care rest of them but I'm not saying Mili isn't worth a try.

I'm starting to lean towards Jesus instead of Aguero with heavy heart but he is a Pep's pet and looks better option for 1.0M less atleast for now.

Not sure why people think anyone but KDB is nailed on. Some people going for Sane, but if Kun and Jesus play then he probably won't start. Likewise with Kun and Jesus, one of those could easily be benched. Over the course of 10 games you can only really say that KDB is nailed on.

Build for the month, not the season
Do not be tempted to plan for the long-term. Construct your squad based on the fixtures over the opening 3-4 Gameweeks and work from there.
that way Gjohnson is not good, and ramsey is a risk, might as well get zaha as he is playing behind benteke in a 3-5-2 system...
also maybe downgrade morata and take willian in Mid, since Hazard is yet to get back full fitness, and Pedro has minor skull fractures and is in recovery too...
