The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Cedric is a wait and see right now as he hasn't played in any of the pre-seasons and may not be back for the start of the season following Confed cup exploits. Yoshida could be a possible alternative in the Soton defence

Anyone else thinking of going light (on paper) up top to free up huge chunk of funds.

    By opting for Chic / Defoe / lukaku enables;

    Court
    Alonso Tripper Cedric
    Alli Sane Salah Arnout
    Lukaku Chic Rooney

Just making a lot more sense right now

Why not 442? You can take Kane/Lukaku/4.5 and fit the rest in anyway.

    A. Coutinho/Salah + Daniels
    B. Zaha + Alonso

A makes the structure more flexible, easier to get 9-9.5 mids if bandwagons arise...

Does this starting XI excuse the trash bench?

    Foster

    De Bruyne, Willian, Ramsey, Tadic
    Kane, Lukaku, Chicharito

If you plan to wildcard in GW3/4, meh, I guess so.

Cedric isn't 100% starting though. Willian isn't 100% starting GW2/3/4. Chicharito's opening fixtures kind of suck. Ramsey is a bit of a gamble in my book. It may also be that Chelsea's defence is rejigged a bit too, with Rudiger.

Nah not really. Pepe played a 3-5-2 in the first half with Kun and Jesus up top. So that leaves Sané out of the nailedness-equation for me and leaves my team.

Stones played quite good in that 3-back, played centraly in the Luiz/Bonucci-spot.

Danilo started as LWB and could be a place holder at 5.5 as long as Mendy is out.

Real Madrid didn't really turned up for this so it's difficult to say much.

So decided rather that thinking about who I want for game GW1 I would have a look at my ideal team - if Hazard and Mane were both definitely available for GW1.
This is what I came up with.
I think it allows a lot of flexibilty to swap big hitters up front not so much at the back. A 442 bench is junk with Carroll maybe getting 2 points if needed
So what do ye think? Will base my structure around these price points so I can get these players when available.

    Foster Elliot

    Trippier Darmian Cedric Daniels

    Hazard Alli Mane Puncheon

    Kane Jesus

I am not putting this up as a current RMT - it's not my current team.
When Haz and Mane are fit it will be. My point is not put in taking hits because you structure is not setup to be able to get them in.

Thanks monitoring the Darmian / Blind spot.

Chicarito's price allowed me to have 2 4.5 GKs who rotate pretty good. So how's this? One big hitter upfront but heavy mid and def since you cant have XI strong players. Thoughts?

    Begovic (Hart)
    Alderweireld Bellerin Alonso Ake (Hunemeier)
    Ozil Salah Eriksen (Carroll Gross)
    Kane Chicarito Mounie

It's different. Going for 3 defender with the potential for 180-200
      I see

I wouldn't be spend 9.5 or whatever it is on Ozil.
Downgrade him and upgrade one the 2 up top
Or find .5 and make him KDB

        Cheers,
If Alexis leaves, i ll stay with Ozil i believe he ll step up. If not i ll probably change him. Dont really like MCI and Guardiola so wont go there but there are alternatives. I ll probably downgrade Ozil and upgrade a striker.

      There's a difference of 1.5m between Defoe & Gayle/Austin.
Both have better fixtures than him.
Defoe was the only one scoring at Sunderland but Bournemouth has King, Fraser, Afobe Stanislas and their goalscoring defenders.

      For me Gayle/Austin & 6.0m defender is a no brainer Defoe & 4.5m defender.

Anyone aware is Junior Stanislas is back to fitness?? currently i have 6.0 left in the bank, with my options being:
Lingard, Junior Stanislas, Ritchie, Knockeart, townsend, Iwobi (leaves 0.5 in the bank), Capoune (leaves 0.5 in the bank)

It feels wrong to leave out Liverpool/Arsenal players, but cannot have them all, and with City being on song today (and history suggests they score bundles of goals in the beginning), my team reads as below:

    GK: DDG/Elliott
    DEF: Trippier/Cedric/Francis/Mee/4.0
    MID: Alli/KDB/Willian/Phillips/6.0
    ST: Lukaku/Jesus/Austin

    Please suggest?!?!

    Thank You in advance!!
