Moving Target – Izzy Brown

Brighton and Hove Albion have bolstered their attacking options ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign with the signing of Chelsea’s Izzy Brown on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old was part of the Huddersfield Town squad that gained promotion to the top flight last season, and Seagulls boss Chris Hughton believes the versatile Brown can continue his development at the Amex Stadium:

“He can play on either flank and he’s done that right the way through his upbringing. He went out on loan to Holland in what was his first loan and played out on the left. At Rotherham, he played up front and at Huddersfield Town he played at number ten. He gives us good scope in the front areas, he’s developing and hopefully, he can develop here.”

The History

Brown began his youth career with a brief spell at Leicester City before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2011 at the age of 14.

He made his professional debut for the Baggies as a substitute in a 3-2 win over Wigan Athletic in May 2013, becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history, aged just 16 years and 117 days old.

In the summer of 2013, Brown signed for Chelsea, although to date he has only made one senior appearance for the Blues, ironically against West Brom in May 2015.

In order to gain first-team experience, Brown was sent on a season-long loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in July 2015.

He racked up 22 league appearances in total, making 12 starts, but only registered one goal and an assist.

Last season, Brown spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Championship side Rotherham United.

He was a regular starter for the Millers and made 20 appearances, managing three goals and five assists.

He then joined Huddersfield in January 2017 for the remainder of the season and produced five goals in 18 matches as the Terriers gained promotion via the play-offs.

Brown has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels, scoring 10 goals in 36 outings.

The Prospects

Given Brighton’s relatively small squad, the addition of the versatile Brown will provide Hughton with a number of different options in attack.

The 20-year-old played predominantly as a support striker last season, although he is equally comfortable operating on either flank or even as a centre forward.

Brown is very adept at finding pockets of space in between the lines and is at his most dangerous on the half-turn and driving at the opposition defence.

While not blessed with blistering pace, Brown possesses quick feet and the vision to pick the right pass in the final third.

He also offers a goal threat, particularly when cutting in from the left – the position he started in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Southend United on Tuesday night – and has a knack for scoring from distance.

Last season, Hughton generally favoured one of Jamie Murphy, Solly March or Jiri Skalak on the left of a four-man midfield, with Anthony Knockaert the regular starter down the right.

Summer signing Pascal Gross could well get the nod in a central attacking midfield role if Hughton opts for a slightly more conservative 4-4-1-1 formation in the top flight, but Brown may also come into the reckoning in that position.

The 33-year-old Glenn Murray currently appears the favourite to lead the line for the Seagulls, although it’s likely Hughton will bring in another striker before the transfer window closes.

Brown has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), placing him in the same price bracket as Gross, with Knockaert slightly more expensive on the budget at 6.0.

He’s priced more favourably in Sky Sports, though, coming in at 7.0, compared to 7.3 for Gross and a whopping 8.5 for Knockaert.

Comparing the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, Brown averaged a shot every 46.3 minutes, unsurprisingly inferior to Knockaert (35.6) but stronger than Gross (53.55).

Gross was hugely creative for Ingolstadt last term, though, averaging a key pass every 27.9 minutes, outshining both Knockaert (40.5) and Brown (54.47).

The big disadvantage for Brown is that he’s not expected to compete for set-piece duties, with Knockaert, Gross and left-back Markus Suttner ahead of him in that queue.

With Knockaert an injury concern for the start of the season after damaging ankle ligaments during a pre-season friendly, Brown looks to have a good chance of forcing his way into the starting XI.

Brighton begin their campaign with a difficult home fixture against Manchester City before a more favourable run of matches (lei wat WBA bou NEW) up to Gameweek 6.

Investing in the Seagulls attack could pay off based on the opening schedule, although with four teams scoring more goals than the 74 that Hughton’s men managed last season, there is a concern over their potency in the final third.

Hughton is a fairly conservative coach – his Norwich City side only scored 41 goals in 2012/13 and a meagre 28 when they were relegated the following season.

As a result, there may be no guarantees that an attacking player such as Brown will start week-in, week-out as a wide player in a four-man midfield, hindering his Fantasy appeal unless he nails down a more advanced role.

At this point, it’s Gross and Knockaert (when he’s back to full fitness), who look the safer bets, then, although there’s little doubt that Brown has the talent to be a factor over the course of the season.

Should he get those regular starts and be given the freedom to express himself, he could yet emerge as a viable budget option.

Surprisingly options A or B both came out as 300 points over the entire 16/17 season but which do you prefer in 3-4-3

    A) Alonso, Lanzini

    B) Tomkins, Ali

    Assuming you already have Kane.

Ran a trial draft league there and here's what I've noticed:

    1. 30 seconds is more than enough time for players choices, at max 60, but no more. That draft lasted 38 minutes!
    2. I found that my watchlist diminished very fast, but as other players were making their choice I was adding to it, which moved things along quicker.
    3. I ran it with 12 players, which did make the pickings slim(and also increased the time spent on it), so I suggest sticking with the suggested 8 players per league.

Didn't get a half bad team out of it though:

    de Gea, Foster
Cédric, Blind, Dawson, Steve Cook, Jagielka
    Sterling, Willian, Mirallas, Snodgrass, Kanté
    Rodriguez, Murray, Batshuayi

I feel 8 is now enough teams for a worthwhile league, would rather see 10 set as a default. I feel my 15-man squad is loaded. Also, don't like the fact that the transfer window is still open and the FPL will still be adding new, potentially big players to the game; Morata, Danilo as an example. I also don't agree with and maybe it's not the case, that any manager should be able to put a claim in before the season begins. Draft for GW1 and then after the GW, run a reverse order for the waiver wire. As for my squad:

      Ederson/Begovic
      Azpilicueta, Alderweireld, Mustafi, Daniels, Cresswell
      Klassen, Alli, Coutinho, Lanzini, Pedro
      Rooney, Aguero, Defoe

I was 9th pick of the 12 and it just seemed to last for EVERRRRR! Even though everyone else was going quite fast with their picks. I'm gonna cap my league at 8.

  3. Hernandez the ideal 3rd striker solution

Following Chicharito's- fairly generous- pricing of 7.0m, I've been wondering if he solves the conundrum of the third striker.

A poacher through and through, I believe that he will be very suited to West Ham's style of play, and well suited to those he will be playing alongside.

First and foremost, looking at his goal scoring record, I think it is telling that last season, of his 11 goals scored in the Bundesliga, all of them came from within the penalty area (3 in the six-yard box, 8 in the penalty area).

Extrapolating the data, since 2010, Chicharito has only ever scored 4 goals from outside of the box.

Contrastingly, he has scored 86 times from within the box (35 in the six-yard box, 51 in the penalty area).

He is also quite handy in the air- winning 34 of his 83 aerial duels last year in the league. Comparing this to a player of a similar height- let's say, Aguero- who only managed to win 7 of his 37 aerial duels...

This bodes well playing for a team who averaged 26 crosses into the box per game last year- a total that no other team could match!

On top of this, West Ham have purchased Arnautovic, who completed 110 crosses last year, and created 50 chances.

Comparing this to Michail Antonio (94 crosses and 31 chances created) and Manuel Lanzini (72 crosses and 56 chances created) it appears as though Chicharito is going to be benefitting from a lot of chances coming his way inside the box.

    In this price bracket, Chicharito will be facing competition from;

Charlie Austin- a brilliant goal scorer, but a torrid injury record. If he starts, I think that he'll score, but competition from Gabbiadini (another in this price bracket) MIGHT limit playing time.

Dwight Gayle- A great Championship player, but personally, I think that he will need to properly prove himself in the Prem before he becomes a viable option for me.

Defoe/King- Bournemouth are a great attacking team, and both had stellar seasons last year. I just can't help but feel as though they'll be stepping on each other's toes and sharing the points too much... (I.e. There won't be a stand-out, consistent option between them).

Rooney- Horrible opening fixtures, but a proven goal scorer.

J.Rod, Firmino and Benteke all deserve a mention as well!

So, do we think that Chicharito is the real deal as a third striker?

Or will you be putting your faith in one of the latter mentioned names?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

    Thanks!

I'm not starting with Chicharito but I am starting with a cheap 3rd striker because I think there are enough options in this bracket that make it viable (although the cheap 3rd striker burned me hugely last year). It'll be easy enough to jump on the respective bandwagon. Chicharito having a couple of tough opening away games and Everton's poor opening fixtures mean we should get a good look at him, Rooney & even Sandro Ramirez (7.5) without a huge risk of missing out.

After that, if any striker in the 6.5 - 8M bracket has emerged, I'll be happy to switch to them.

Thanks - yeah a lot of ppl on here seem sketchy about sane, but I don't really know why, he was in the goals and assists a lot last season and KDB seems to play deeper a lot now to accommodate all the attacking talent. But, point taken. Leaving out Kane feels a bit nuts but fancy City's early fixtures more than Spuds or Chelsea. Hmmm....

Its because Pep played a 3-4-1-2 last night against Madrid. So people are worried he might be changing to 3 at the back. Also, Sane will have rotation risk with Sterling and others.

I'm looking at opening fixtures quite a lot with a view to potentially wildcarding after that - Chelsea have quite tricky opening, and West Ham's first 3 are all away. But I'm getting the KDB message from a lot of people so will think about that

I know Southampton have great fixtures, but one win in six at home and a GD of -4 hardly inspires much confidence. Hopefully the new manager simultaneously improves matters at the back and going forward because a lot of us are relying on Saints players 🙂

    Rate my high ownership team

    Foster (Myhill)
Mee Naughton Cameron (Long / Rangel)
    Alli Cout Zaha Pogba (McClean)
    Kane Kaku Wazza

The mids and forwards are the top owned 3/4. The defence is cheap, it was made up of remaining funds but the 4.0's cover the 4.5's.

    Thoughts?

I'm always an advocate of a cheap defence, but the cheap defensive options this year are all pants - I'd downgrade one of your MFs to a 6.0 and seriously upgrade that defence.

That was my initial thought but clean sheets are always unpredictable. At the start of the season theyre even more unpredictable so i was going to go cheap early and maybe upgrade at wc. But im not exactly great at this game so you can tell me if thats a bad idea 😆

I agree with you to an extent, and I usually do skimp on the defence for the reasons you say, but I really don't see a defence full of 4.5s getting anything more than abject disappointment this season looking at the teams they play for.

Checked the stats from last year

But even then, that doesn't factor in Arsenal's new system and how Ramsey gains from it

Probably a case of wait and see.

Willian over Ramsey for me. Don't see Ramsey being a full time starter. Even Willian would rotate out of my MID, as I feel there are stronger players with better fixtures.

      First RMT....
      Begovic (Foster)
Bertrand - Danilo (GW1 then transfer for Utd cover) - Otamendi - (Rangel, Rosenoir)
      Cout's - KDB - Fab - Herrera -(Romeu)
      Kane - Lukaku - Austin

      Cheers in advance

United have just as good a chance of a CS v West Ham, given they had one of the best defences in the league last year.

            United conceded at home: 12
            City conceded away: 22

I worried Chicharito may come back to haunt Utd, plus WH have more attacking threat in Arnautovic so already look better than last season (although not hard)

True. But I think that planned transfer will be a waste and you might have more pressing issues.

Surely you mean Foster (Begovic)? ;p

        Beyond that:

still don't trust City for clean sheets

Can cover Southampton's good early fixtures with Cedric for 0.5 cheaper (plus attack threat)

Not sure if Fab (regas??) is first team starter or even near

Herrera and Romeu defensive mids - no

        Strikeforce tasty

I originally had Cedric tbh so may revert. Unsure who else would play in Fabregas' position atm. I thinking Herrera is a bargain and now capable of 140pts after 3 seasons in an average side.

Although not the most exciting pick, Defoe is surely a safe option. Surprised I don't see him in more RMTs.

What's the groupthink opinion on Puncheon as a 4th mid in a 3-4-3?
5m, nailed on, with plenty of corners and free kicks too...

CPL have another 5mil mid who's on pens and direct FKs..

Otherwise Zaha is worth the extra over Puncheon IMO who just doesn't seem to do it fantasywise. He went something like 25 GWs last season without a return, it was ridiculous.

                    6 years, 8 months ago

                    I hear that.

On the first point though I'd counter that you get a lot more corners and indirect free kicks (Punch) than you do direct FKs and pens...
